How Did We
Attrach/Address Our
Audience
EVALUATION Q5
What is our target audiences?
As shown in our work before our final piece and our evaluation question 4 are target audience is
consists mainly of 16-25-year-old with main the gender being mixed but slightly more
commonly male. As well as our target audience will come from a range of social classes and
backgrounds.
The demographic of our target audience fits into is either grade C, D or E. With a psychographic
of both reformer because this psychographic supported the growth of new products.
The other psychographic is the explorer this is because the people in this category are well
educated therefore may be more into technology which is in our psychographics and likes to try
new things.
Results of our focus group and how this
shaped our piece
Some of the main point from our focus group that helped shaped our final product was the fact
that are focus group like to many conventional elements in crime thrillers. This impacted are
piece because after this information we decided to use some element which were
unconventional to the genre for example having both a female antagonist and protagonist.
Another part of the focus group that impacted the way we approached are final product was
when are target audience said that they liked the way crime thriller used sound to be able to
build tension within the piece. Because of this we decided that we should create are own music
for our product to ensure that it built tension in the places we wanted it to.
Audience Pleasures
One way that we tried to attract are audience was by using certain audience pleasures. An
example of this was the fact that we had both are main characters being female. This is an
audience pleasure because it is not stereotypical therefore is different and something that the
audience may not see in other crime thriller films.
Another audience pleasure that we used as a way to attract are audience was by the starting our
film opening with the victim doing something in their everyday routine. This is an audience
pleasure because it shows victim in their natural environment therefore making the audience
feel more like they know the victim therefore raising the tension and suspense of what might
happen to them. This therefore appeals to our audience that we already know mainly watch
thriller films because they enjoy the tension within them. This also are open look more realistic
to everyday life which we wanted in our piece because we believed that a sense of realism
worked well in the genre of a crime thriller film as well as raising the fear in the audience
because it could happen to them.
Uses and gratifications
The casting of the victim was also another way we tried to include uses and gratification within
our piece was by using a victim, which was of similar age to are target audience. This was a uses
and gratification because are target audience saw part of their own identity within the character.
Which therefore showed us using identity as a uses and gratification. This as also useful in our
piece because it also makes them feel more associated with the characters ,which therefore
would make the audience have a greater reaction from the victims death.
How the sound attracted our audience
After speaking with are target market before creating our piece as part of our focus group we
knew that using sound appropriately would be a key part of drawing in the audience to the
production. The reason for this was because while we were conducting our focus group it was
said by multiple people that tension was one of the main parts of a thriller film are audience
enjoyed and that sound was a good way to help create some of the tension.
One way in which we did this was by assigning Rachel as the person designated to create a
sound track using logic pro as well as free sound to be able to create exactly what are group
wanted for the sound as well as being able to get it to fit our piece exactly therefore helping
create tension throughout but at a steady pace.
When we showed are production someone also said that the use of certain sounds including the
mobile phone also help attract are audience because it was put at the most climatic moment
therefore making sound that the audience weren’t expecting therefore creating a kind of jump
scare affect for the audience.
How the casting of our main characters
attracted are audience
We used the characters in our piece as one of the main ways that we could help attract our
audience. One way in which we did this was by creating a binary opposite between the two
characters we showed in the opening, such as different classes between the characters with the
protagonist being more middle class compared to the antagonist being more from a working
class background. This was also shown within the costume that the characters were wearing
with the protagonist wearing more business like clothing compared to the hoodie which is worn
by the antagonist.
Another way in which we attracted are main characters is that we made are main characters
similar ages to are target which is teens and people in their early 20s. The reason why we did
this was because we believe that this made are characters more relatable to our audience
therefore engaging the viewer more because they see similarities from their own life in the
characters.
How are use of camera helped in
attracting our audience
Camera angles:
One of the camera angles we used to be able to intrigue our audience was the use of high angle
shot to be used as CCTV shots to be able to show the audience the action though a different
perspective for the audience. This also would be used to create more tension because it also
show the antagonist getting closer to the protagonist from each CCTV shots.
Another camera angle that we used to be able bring in our audience is the use of shot reverse
shot to be able tot show the action from both characters perspective, this was also done by the
use of point of view shots to be able to put the audience in the shoes of the different characters.
This is also able to increase the tension for the audience because feel as if they are the
characters and in a dangerous situation.
How the use of colour helped attract are
audience
Our use of colour is also another way in which we tried to attract our audience. This was mainly
by the filter that we put on are piece to be able to create the CCTV shots. The reason why we
used this was to make the shots stand out from everything else as well as make them look
realistically more like stereotypical CCTV footage.
We also put a filler on the rest of our footage to help darken the colour of the shots to be able to
symbolise early morning as well as the dark nature of the pieces plot.
What are audience thought
After we had finished creating our film opening we asked some members of our media class
who fitted are target market to watch are piece to see what they liked and disliked about our
final piece. We also asked are teachers to see if their was any part of the technical side of the
product that they thought we could improve.
While we were doing this we found that what attract our audience in the most was a
combination of a few main elements of our piece, including the use of sound, the main
characters as well as a couple of main camera shots and our use of colour.
Audience feedback
The main ways in which we improved our piece was by the shortening of some of our shots
because when some of the audience watched our piece they found that in certain areas the
opening didn’t flow very well.
Another main improvement we made was by adding a shot of the protagonist on the floor after
she had been injured. The reason why we added this was because are audience said that they
believe that they didn’t know enough about what had happened by just the cut to black on its
own. This also helped are piece find a natural place to stop without it looking like the end part
had been left on a cliff-hanger which isn't conventional to film ending.
