The document discusses the feedback received from an audience survey about horror movie preferences that was conducted to help determine what type of horror movie trailer to create. The survey found that paranormal horror was the most popular genre and torture the least, so a paranormal trailer was selected. Conducting the survey helped understand the target 15-30 age range audience and that males and females enjoy horror equally. While most respondents were female, responses from a broad age range were received. The feedback received after creating the trailer confirmed paranormal and jump scares were effective and identified areas like lighting and camera angles to improve.
2. For our movie trailer we decided to make a horror trailer as we felt that we could all
relate well to a horror trailer and we thought that we had the resources and the
knowledge to produce this to a high standard. Before actually choosing to do a horror
trailer instead of any other genre we needed to do some audience research to get a
general feel about people's views of different genres of trailers, we also needed to
know what they would like to see in a horror trailer and most importantly we wanted
to know which type of horror trailer would be the most conventional and popular with
our audience. The audience feedback which we undertook was on a website called
survey monkey. This allowed us to produce any type of survey we wanted with
whatever questions we wanted to help us to gather some knowledge before producing
the trailer. Once we had decided what type of trailer we would be choosing to make,
we came up with some of our own chosen facts to do with who would predominantly
be going to watch horror films at the cinema. We decided that horror films are pretty
much 50/50 ration between male and females but men probably watch them slightly
more because of the adrenaline factor which men are associated a lot with today in
society. We also looked at the type of age group we would be focusing towards and
this turned out to be a 15- 30 age group as this age group are associated with enjoying
the thrill of horror movies and any higher or lower is either to inappropriate or too
outdated for the chosen age group.
3. The first stage of finding information about which type of horror trailer to choose
was a question based on ranking your favourite horror genre in order out of
paranormal, action, psychological, puzzle/ game, zombie, slasher, gore or torture.
We found out that paranormal was the most popular with torture being the least
popular, this then gave us a good insight as to what genre we would be choosing
and funnily enough, we chose to do paranormal because it was the most
conventional to a horror film and wasn't aimed towards a niche audience.
Other questions on our horror questionnaire were things such as, how many
horror films have you watched in the last month? How do you feel about horror
films which make you jump? Would you prefer the hero to be male or female?
And there were many other questions we used to gather information. Doing a
questionnaire really helped us to understand more about what we would need to
use in our horror trailer, what we shouldn't put in, what age group we would be
aiming for and what genre as well. Once the questionnaire had been answered
and we had studied the feedback thoroughly we were ready to make the horror
trailer.
4. • While producing our questionnaire we needed to know answers from a very
broad range of ages and genders otherwise the questionnaire would be biased
and not have a general answer at the end of it. Unfortunately while getting our
feedback it turned out that 80% of people who answered our questionnaire were
female and only 20% were male, this didn't matter to much as we did have
answers from both genres but it would have been nice to have a solid 50/50
response. We gathered responses from all different ages and this was because of
when we decided to gather answers for our questionnaire, we sent it out in an
email stating that we want all different age groups to take part in it and a our
responses were just how we hoped they would be, we had age groups from 15 to
above 31. We had no 0-15 aged responses which was a good thing in a way as
our target audience wasn't this age group. We did have 15% 16-20’s, 15% 21-30
year olds answer and finally we had, 61% over 31’s answering plus a further 8%
who preferred not to give their age away. This meant that we had successfully
been able to gather a broad range of age groups and genres for our film.
5. During the process of finding out about what our audiences would like to see, we
learnt a lot about how to make a questionaire, how to gather the information and
how to find the appropriate questions to used and also the questions which would
most likely help us to make our horror trailer to the best of our ability. We learnt
that we didn't need answers from younger aged people as a horror film would not
be suitable to them so it would be pointless finding out what they would want to
see. Doing our feedback also helped us to find out who our protagonist should be,
male or female and doing this altered our final decision as to what gender we
would chose so this was probably the one thing we learnt from the most while
finding out feedback from our audiences.
Once we had made our horror trailer we gave it to a series of people to watch
including family members, staff at our school and the AS media students in the
year below to watch, the feedback was very helpful as the majority of people who
had watched our trailer found it conventional and found the jump scares which we
had used scary which was our main objective for the horror film. The trailer has
only been watched by a few people but the feedback has been helpful and
informative, we had a few bits we needed to tweak such as lighting and a couple
camera angles and we wouldn't have known to do this if it wasn't for the feedback
we were given from our horror trailer.
