The document discusses the results of two questionnaires given to audiences about action movies. The first questionnaire found that males generally find the action genre more exciting than females. It also showed that interest was highest among males aged 11-25 and females aged 15-20. The second questionnaire asked about conventions audiences expect and want to see in action movie openings versus overall plots. The document concludes that based on the research, the target audience for an action movie would be ages 12-18, though the audience could extend beyond this age range.
4. WHAT DOES OUR AUDIENCE THINK OF
ACTION?
In order to gain a general understanding of people’s opinions on the
action genre chosen, we simply asked them to tick a box to say
whether they found the genre “exciting, average or boring.” The first
graph shows that males were a lot more responsive to the “exciting”
category and there wasn’t one male response who found it “boring”
females however tend to have found the genre more average than
“exciting” or “boring”. The final two graphs show that interest lay in
the male population between the ages of 11-25 and females aged
15-20.
5. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO HAPPEN (TYPICAL
CONVENTIONS) IN AN ACTION MOVIE.
The next questions of our questionnaire helped us to see what
types of conventions audiences expected and would like to
see in an action movie while simultaneously allowing us to
start drafting ideas for potential synopsis ideas.
This questionnaire wholly told us only about action however.
We decided when looking back on this feedback however that
we needed more, extensive information. We therefore created
a second questionnaire in order to receive this information.
6. QUESTIONNAIRE 2
Our second questionnaire allowed us to see in coherence with
the other graph what our new audience interviewees wanted
to see in the opening sequence of an action film as opposed
to an action film storyline/as a whole. We did this to identify
what to and what not to give away in the first 2 minutes which
would then lead on to the remainder of the movie which would
include more of the factors stated above eg.
fighting, explosions.
7. HOW AGE RATING CLASSIFICATIONS
AFFECTED OUR AUDIENCE CHOICE.
This questionnaire let us know what types of conventions to include
in our film in order to appeal to our audience, whoever that may
specifically be. Our BBFC classification suggested that our movie
should be given a 12 age rating certificate. The guidelines state that
“psychological threat is permitted at 12 or 12A as long as sequences
are not too frequent/sustained” which is relevant to our sequence
due to the thriller scene. We decided to rate our film a 12 as although
within the sequence we do not use any sexual content or dialogue
whatsoever – eliminating the possibility of explicit language – within
our actual film perhaps we would include explicit language and brief
moments and portrayals of sexual content seeing as it is a teen film
and these aspects would be common within a “teen movie”. After all
this research we concluded that our target audience would be aged
12-18. This is not to say however that our audience cannot extend
outside of this bracket.
8. TYPICAL AUDIENCE MEMBERS
Here are screenshots of examples of our typical
target audience. You can see we have both males
and females of teenage ages.
9. OTHER AUDIENCES
Although we did classify our typical target
audience, we also understood that our audiences
would extend outside this bracket. As you can see
we have audience members aged 20+.
