3. WHY I CONDUCTED A FINAL SURVEY
• One of the reason why I have decided to create a final survey is because it enables
me to get more information from my potential target audience. This would
therefore help me finalise my ideas for my final piece and find out whether I should
change parts of my idea to enable me to make a conventionally thriller trailer that
would appeal to my chosen target audience.
• I also wanted to conduct a final survey to be able to further develop some of the
points that I found in both my focus group and pilot survey, as well as ask the
questions to the a larger audience to make the results more valid.
4. QUESTION 1
• The first question that I asked in my final survey was what
was the age of the participants taking the survey. This
question was important to ask because it help me work out
whether or not the people taking part in my survey are my
target audience, which therefore would show whether the
results were useful to my product or not.
• The results of the question showed that the majority of my
target audience were within my target range of 16 to 20
with only 4 people survey putting different age ranges with
them being equally split between the categories of under
10 and over 30. This therefore shows that my results of the
survey are useful when looking at my target audience.
5. QUESTION 2
• The second question that I put in my final survey was what
is the gender of the participants of the survey. The main
reason why I put this question in my final survey is to be
able to see whether or not the proportion of the different
genders in the survey is the same as my proportion of my
target audience.
• The results show that the proportion of men and women
was equal which are my highest categories which
therefore show that the people who were surveyed had a
similar levels of the different genders that my target
audience.
• Although there was a large number of people who put the
other option which was ‘if other please specify’ but this
isn’t relevant to seeing what gender is the majority is
within my survey, because it is not the majority category.
6. QUESTION 3
• The third question that I asked in my final survey is “How
often do you watch thriller films ? (pick the one that applies
the most to you)”. The reason why I asked this question is to
see whether the people I had surveyed watch films, because if
they didn’t it wasn’t as useful information because it made
them not my target market for my thriller trailer.
• The result of this question showed that the people surveyed
all watched a different amounts of films. Although the two
categories that are most popular are Never and every 6
months ,this had both positive and negative implication for
my survey because it showed that a large number of may
audience which I thought were my target market don’t watch
film therefore making some of my results less useful.
Although as a positive more people overall watched films one
a year or more.
7. QUESTION 4
• The main reason why I put the question of whether or
not my target audience enjoyed watching thriller films
is to see whether may target age range actually
enjoyed thriller film. Which is the genre that I have
decided that I want to use for my trailer.
• The results of the survey showed that the majority of
the people surveyed enjoyed watching thriller films.
This therefore will mean that they have some
knowledge of the genre therefore making the
responses that I receive more useful for my research.
As well as showing that I have picked the right target
age range for my final piece.
8. QUESTION 5
• The reason why I repeated this question even though I had all ready asked it in my
pilot survey was because that I had three option on the original and had a majority
of two categories that were nearly equal. So for this survey I decided that I was only
going to give the options of psychological and crime thriller to see which one my
target audience preferred.
• The results showed that my surveyed target audience equally liked both crime and
psychological thrillers therefore making either sub genre good for my trailer and
ancillary tasks.
9. QUESTION 6
• In also asked this question in my final survey even
though I had already asked it in the pilot survey was
because I only had a male or female category on the
original survey and someone's feedback was that I
should add an either category for the people within
my target audience who didn’t mind about the
gender of the main characters.
• This also benefitted my research because it shows
that the majority of my target audience dot mind
whether the main characters is male or female, which
is unconventional because the main characters is
stereotypically male in thriller trailers.
10. QUESTION 7
• For question 7 I decide that I wanted to use a comment box on my survey for this
question instead of multiple choice answers. The reason for this is because I wanted
more in depth data on what my audience wanted within a thriller trailer, that I could
develop on within my focus group.
• The results of question provide a range of useful answers, mainly of convention that I
could use in my final trailer for example violence, quick cuts and exciting footage
from the film.
• As well as the also stated things that they wanted the overall trailer to create for the
audience, such as suspense and thrills.
12. • Unlike my pilot survey within my final survey I included question on my ancillary
tasks. The reason why I have done this is to be able add to my research for my
ancillary tasks that I have done up to this point to be able to see whether or not I
should create a conventional magazine cover and poster or add in elements that
aren’t conventional to film posters and magazines.
13. QUESTION 8
• For my first question on my ancillary tasks I asked what colours did my audience
think were best for a magazine cover on and poster on a thriller film?
• I got a range of responses but the colours that came up most frequently were black,
grey, red and dark blue.
• What this showed me was that my target audience mainly wanted a stereotypical
colour scheme for both the poster and the magazine cover. Which may therefore
also show that my target audience may want me to mainly stick to convention when
I’m creating my two ancillary tasks.
14. QUESTION 9
• For question I asked whether they would like to see one image on a film magazine
front cover or would they like multiple images?
• The main reason why I asked this question was to determine whether or not my
target audience wanted a front cover that was conventional. Or whether they
wanted me to differ form convention to be able to create something that doesn’t
look as stereotypical.
• The results of this showed that the people surveyed would prefer for the magazine
front cover to be conventional and only contain one main image. This also further
reinforces the idea that my target audience would prefer a conventional magazine
which stuck mainly to conventions.
15. QUESTION 10
• The final question that I asked as part of my final survey was whether any of the
people taking part in the survey could think of any film magazines that I could take
inspiration from.
• The reason that I asked this question was to enable me to make sure that I had used
lots of different types of magazine front covers, to be able to get as much idea
about how to structure my magazine cover a possible.
• Although on my final survey their was no magazine front cover suggested so I have
decided that I will ask this question again within my focus group.
