3. Research
• One strength of my research is that it helped me get a strong
understanding of all the terms that come with making magazine e.g
Masthead subheading strapline etc.
• Another strength is that I got to look at existing products which gave me
an idea of what the layout of my product should look like.
Another strength of my research is that I chose existing products al with the
same and similar conventions which made it easier to decide how my final
product should look like.
One weakness of my research is that I did not conduct any questionnaires or
interviews with the target audience. If we did this could have helped us find
out what the target audience wants out of a skating magazine.
Another weakness of my research is that I could of looked at more of the
latest existing products to get an idea of what skating magazines of today look
like.
4. Planning
• One strength of my planning is that I had a clear way to start jotting down
all of my notes and plans on a mind map.
• Another strength of my planning is when I was doing a style sheet It helps
me decide on clear colour schemes and font choices to help me create my
final product.
• Another strength of my planning is that when doing contingency planning
it helps out as you know what problems can arise but you also know how
to solve the problem.
• One weakness of my planning was that I couldn't’t create a schedule
where I kept to the deadlines I set. Next time I will create a schedule with
a larger time scale to give myself the correct amount of time to reach
deadlines
5. Time Management
• Personally I think I could've managed my time better because
I did not meet the deadline. I could of managed my time
better by using a schedule that was designed better to keep
me on track for my work. I could also manage my time better
by having the correct software to do the work at home or in
my spare time.
• If I had more time to produce the work I think my final
product would be more professional as id have all the extra
time to produce the work
6. Technical Qualities
My magazine follows common
convention within magazines for
example my magazine contains a
barcode like all other magazines. In
my magazine I used shapes to make
the subheadings and masthead stand
out to the viewer. Like all other
skateboarding magazines the
skateboarder is the main focus of the
cover so that it is eye catching to the
audience.
One difference between the
magazine covers is that my magazine
advertise the company website and
social media pages on the cover
whereas the professional cover
doesn't. Another difference is that
my masthead is not behind any other
images whereas the Thrasher
magazine cover has the masthead
behind the skateboarder.
7. Aesthetic Qualities
My magazine uses the same font
throughout the magazine cover, the font is
also a graffiti styled font which can be
related to the action shot that has a large
variety of street art in the photo. One
strength of my magazine is that it follows
common conventions of a magazine. One
weakness of my magazine is that I
personally feel like my colour scheme isn’t
bright enough to be eye catching for the
viewer. Personally I would like to improve
my magazine by trying to create more
detailed Masthead and colour scheme to
make the magazine seem more appealing to
the target audience
8. Audience Appeal
My target audience that I appealed to were teenagers
aged 12 and above. I appealed to my audience by using
skateboarders under the age of 25 to appeal to the
young demographic. I would have liked to appeal to all
genders but skateboarding comes across as a mainly
male dominated sport. I have also tried to appeal to the
psychographic “needs driven” I tried to appeal to them
because this group act upon impulse and instinct. To
appeal to them we can send them messages where
they’ve missed out on offers and products in the hope
they will buy a subscription for the magazine or impulse
buy other related products. I also tried to appeal to a
social statuses (A,B,C1,C2) by making the pricing of my
magazine to be £5.99 for a monthly issue so its
affordable for a lot of social statuses
10. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product? Its
Bright and eye catching for the viewer and the
action shot of the skateboarder is high quality
and clear
What improvements could have been made to
the product? The subheadings font colour could
be different to ensure it is clear and eye catching
11. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product? I liked
how the content on the double page spread
was detailed and on the topic of action sport
filming
– What improvements could have been made to the
product? The background colour for the double
page spread makes the text look really dark
12. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product? The
graffiti font appeals to the audience of
skateboarders as street art is commonly seen
in the action sport. Also the colour scheme is
consistent throughout the cover
What improvements could have been made to
the product? I feel there was to much content
on the double page spread there should be
more pictures than text.
13. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback? I agree with improvement of
changing the double page spread background
colour as it does make the text look darker.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback? I disagree that there is to much text
on the double page spread as it’s a magazine
article that already is filled with enough
images in comparison to text
14. Peer Feedback Summary
• The main changes I would make to my product
based on feedback would be change the
colour scheme to be brighter and more eye-
catching for the viewer. Another change I
would make to my product would be to have a
more simplistic cover by using less text and
images so I can draw the viewer in on the
main image (action shot of skateboarder)
