1. Evaluation question 5 part 1: What research and planning did you do in
order to create a successful production in appealing to your target
audience? How did it affect your ideas?
I found through my research and planning it helped me most looking through other
magazines within the same genre as mine to help me create a magazine that’s
suitable for my target audience.
Going through my genre research I also found that the R&B Hip/Hop Rap genre is all
generally having a very mature and professional look to it. I found that the
magazines rarely include fun and happy smiles on the front cover. I also found that
they use simple primary colours to help make it stand out and also help make it take
on the more professional look of things rather than fun and cheery like it would in a
pop magazine.
Within my textual analysis, it shows me the importance of the editing and
photography for the magazine as the images are what lays out the magazine, and is
what is initially noticed first. Finding out that the images are one of the most
important parts of my magazine I focused on my skills and also made sure that I had
a variety of photos to choose from. Another thing I learnt from my textual analysis’ is
that sometimes less is more but to also add enough information on my pages to
keep the audience interested. From my second textual analysis I found that playing
around with typography can make a huge difference as to how the overall layout
looks as for example, a bold title on the double page spread can help balance out
the whole page and also add a pop of creativity and/or colour.
Furthermore I also researched into costume and props which I found was also an
important aspect of my magazine’s overall look. I found that through researching
costume and props it gave me a clearer and rough idea of how I wanted my models
to dress and what props to use. It influenced me and allowed me to tell my models
exactly what I envision and what my ideas were and it helped them prepare for the
shoot itself.
Additionally i also did research on different fonts on DaFont.com. Doing this allowed
me to choose between a variety of different fonts and also help me have a few
different choices of font for me to choose from. I played around with the font ensuring
that i found the perfect one for my magazine.
