3. Research
• I think the strengths of doing research for this product was that it gave me
ideas of the competition of the market of skate ‘mags’ and also let me
have an insight on designs and how to style it. However a weakness of
doing the research was that most magazines were very similar and I didn’t
think I needed it as I already had an idea. I think that I could’ve done a
wider range of research in order to get more variety of products. The
research has a good effect on my product as I can compare my own to
existing to see if it would be good.
5. Planning
When I was planning my product with mind maps I was able to show my ideas across a
page which allowed me to branch out to different concepts. Through this my designing
stage was made easier as I knew what I wanted to create from the product. The
planning also helped my product as it gave me time to experiment with different stuff
which I was to include. The weaknesses of planning was that I already had a rough
idea of what I wanted to create so I think that I could’ve started the product before
the planning. In in order to make my planning better and more successful I would’ve
included article content as when it came to writing in my magazine I did not have any
ideas. The effect that this had on the product was that I wasn’t sure what the finished
product was going to be like.
6. Time Management
• Did you manage your time well?
I think that my time management could’ve been better as I was very late at
doing the evaluation because the next project had to be started before I had
finished it, I think that my products could’ve been more detailed if they I had
more time on them however I think that my designs are still good.
• If I had more time I would’ve made the inside of the magazine look more
professional and detailed and informative to the reader.
7. Technical Qualities
The products shown are similar as they both have the same layout with the masthead
at the top of the page using a bold font and name. Then they both use an eye catching
image to draw you into the product placed in the centre so it is the main focus. They
both also show the bar code in the bottom left and some of the content included is
located in the middle and listed in bold colours. I chose to use a black and white image
as I thought it looked very good with the orange however the ’thrasher mag’ uses a
bright picture from the day time.
8. Aesthetic Qualities
I think my product has a very professional look to it because I use
a high quality image and I chose a font that suits the style of
genre. I think that the black, white and orange was a good colour
scheme as it made the main image stand out and the text. I also
think that there was just the right amount of text on the front to
get you enticed into the product. However the text at the bottom
of my magazine cover was not as visible as I would’ve liked but I
didn’t want to draw away from my theme. The inside content was
also not as good as I would’ve hoped as I did not plan what I was
going to write.
9. Audience Appeal
My product appeals to my audience as it uses a popular trick at the
moment in skateboarding as the cover photo which will make more
people want to buy the product as it is current and will interest my
target audience of 16-19 year olds. It advertises interviews with well
known skaters on the cover so that it is clear to the customer what is
inside. I also think that It will appeal my audience as it stands out
from a lot of skate mags that are about today, with its name of
‘refreshed’ gives you a feel of what its all about (giving a refreshed
magazine to the skating industry).
11. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
• The image is a powerful action shot of street skating. As a skater I can’t work out
how the image was achieved and this both grabs my attention and then holds it as
I try and work out what has been done.
• I like the colour scheme – the fact that the street shot is in Black and White creates
an atmosphere and makes it timeless.
What improvements could have been made to
the product?
I like the use of the colour Orange for the text however there are a couple of words
like ’mag’ and the name of the skater being interviewed that are not as easily read as
they could be.
12. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– I think that it has a professional look to it and I like the colour scheme
that is used.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product? I think that there could’ve been more images or text
on the front which would catch the readers attention more.
13. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– I like the centre image as it draws you in, I also like the colour co-coordination
of the black, white and orange.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product? I think that the text at the bottom could’ve been
more clear to read.
14. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback? I agree with all my feedback as I also thought that the
text at the bottom was not as clear as I would’ve hoped.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback? I did not disagree with the feedback
as I thought that the changes they suggested
would improve my product.
15. Peer Feedback Summary
Through the feedback which I was given I would’ve been sure to make the
article names and content more visible to the reader through either
changing the colour or putting a back ground colour behind the text as they
were not in good contrast with the picture on some parts. However most
feedback was positive and I agreed with the points which were made.
