3. Research
• Strengths of my research
-I think one of the strengths of my research was that I talked about every subject in a lot of detail giving my personal
thoughts on how it would improve my work, effect my audience and why I have chosen to look at this product/talk to this
person and how researching this will effect the overall outcome of my final product while both looking at the positives and
negatives throughout. A good example of this is when I’m doing my research analysis where I have tried to cover every key
point across 3 different pages (use the link to the right to view the page that I am talking about or look at the images below)
https://www.slideshare.net/samuelnixon1/3-research2-149303224
-I think another strength of my research is that when I was doing my primary audience research I made sure to interview a
range of different people in my target audience to get an idea of what my audience likes to see in the travel magazines that
they read, for example I have looked at both males and females in my target audience and a wide range of different ages to
make sure that magazine appeals to the range of different ages, which will hopefully increase the amount of magazines that
will be sold.
- I Think another strength of my research is that my secondary research allowed me to get a better idea of what my
audience likes and helps me to get an idea of what age group reads my type of products as well as the types of social classes
that read my types of products. I also think that this helped to make sure that my product specifically targeted a certain
audience even though at some parts I talked about a slightly different audience.
• Weaknesses of my research
-I think one of the weaknesses of my research was that when I was doing my existing product research I covered mainly the
magazine The National Geographic and one other magazine double page spread. I think that this is a disadvantage because
this means that I only saw ideas from two types of magazines giving me a very rough idea of other types of magazines on
the market since I covered so few. This could result in my product being at a disadvantage on the market because it I may
have used Ideas which are very rarely used and are unappealing but I wouldn’t know because I only covered two types of
magazines instead of looking at a wide range of magazines and collecting a large amount of different ideas from similar
products to see what is widely used so I can make sure that my magazine is unique and stands out to consumers.
5. Research
• Weaknesses of my research
-I think another weakness of my research was that in parts of my practical research I used images off the internet instead of
collecting my own images and using them which would of not only been able to be used to help my editing skills but will
have also allowed me to figure out what types of photographs I want to use for the background of my cover and other
pages in my magazine possibly increasing the quality of them when it actually comes to collecting the images that I need for
my final product because I will already know what works best and what looks unappealing. If I did this it might have also
allow me to collect images that I could use in my final product ahead of time allowing me to have more time editing my
magazine and collecting information.
• How my research helped my product
-My researched helped the production of my product and the overall outcome because it gave me the chance to see what
existing products look like giving me ideas to help base my product off to make sure that it appealed to my target audience.
For example looked at these products allowed me to get a rough idea of how much information I should put on each page,
what types of colour schemes work best for text on certain images and to see the types of techniques that they used in the
creation of their product e.g. if they have changed the perspective of an image to make something on their cover 3D and
stand out more to people who might pass by the product and see it.
-The secondary research also helped the overall outcome of my product because it allowed me to find out what my target
audience specifically likes in their travel magazines and what they find most appealing. For example doing this research
allowed me to find out what style my audience finds appealing, how much information they expect to find in their
magazine, what colour schemes are most likely to get their attention while also being visually appealing at the same time
increasing the chances of them buying my product.
• What I could of improved on
-I think I could of improve my research by talking about a wider range of topics and existing products for example I think I
could of improved if I talked about another magazine such as the well known travel magazine called Conde Nast Traveller
which is used mainly by my target audience. This would mean that if I researched this product I would have been able to see
a range of ideas and techniques that I know would appeal to my target audience because both my magazine and the
existing one target the same audience.
6. Research
• What I could of improved on
-I think I could of also improved my research if I talked about the types of shots I wanted to use in more detail when doing
my practical research because this would of possibly helped to make my time management because I would have a better
understanding of where I need to get my shots from and when I need to go get them to get the right type of shot that I
want which in return would make my overall final product much better quality because I would have more time to improve
my product instead of traveling to get the images that I needed for it. It would also help to make sure that I stick to getting
certain shots instead of getting shots that wont work for my magazine. For example I wanted to try stick to using entry shots
in my magazine to help draw the reader in and to help make certain parts of information stand out, for example this picture
below that I used in my practical research is a good example because when you look at the image your eyes are immediately
drawn up the river so I could of put my title at the top in the centre so that the readers first look is drawn to the river but
the river will lead them into looking at my masthead instead.
7. • Strengths of my planning
- I think one of the strengths of my planning is that I have talked about a range of different ideas in case that one doesn’t
work. this will be useful in the production of my product because it means that if my first idea doesn’t work I am able
to quickly move onto the next idea straight away without having to start completely from scratch and spend my
production time trying to think of another idea of what to do. This also helped to make my product more unique and
more interesting in the end as well because I finished my product faster then I thought so I added an extra double page
spread and advertisement that I planned for a different idea, this added more variety to my work making it more
interesting to my audience because it isn’t just the same thing over and over on every page. This also became useful
when making my cover because my first idea for my cover didn’t work because it looked out of place compared to the
rest of my magazine, looked unappealing and didn’t get across the theme and style that I wanted to use for my
magazine because I wanted to go for a type of modern and luxurious magazine whereas my first idea looked more
cheap and unreliable but because I had made more then just one idea I was able to move onto my next idea straight
away which was much more successful, you can see the difference on slide 10 below.
- I think another strength of my planning is that even though I have planned a wide range of different ideas they all have
a similar theme and style meaning that when I combined two ideas they worked well together instead of looking out of
place and causing my magazine to look unappealing to my target audience. You can see which page is which idea on
slide 8 below. This was useful when my first idea worked well throughout most of my magazine and when I needed to
change my cover and when I needed to add more pages to my work.
• Weaknesses of my planning
-I think one of the weaknesses of my planning is that I didn’t use a mixture of both my images and images off the
internet. I think this Is a weakness because maybe If I had gone out and got the shots in my spare time while doing
planning I would have been able to realise that my first idea for my cover wasn’t going to work ahead of time and
would have been able to make a better one instead of spending time making a cover that in the end didn’t work and
wasted time that I could of used making my product much more detailed by adding more pages, having more time to
get better detail to write about as well as being able to get a much larger amount of shots to choose from in the
production to add more variety to my magazine to make it more interesting.
Planning
8. • Weaknesses of my planning
- I think another weakness of my magazine is that on my initial plans it is hard to tell what I actually want to my product
to be and goes back and forth from being a travel magazine or a type of honest personal blog. Luckily this didn't’t
effect the final outcome of my product because by the time I got to my other planning I had settled on making a travel
magazine however if I hadn’t it could of caused my product to be very confusing because trying to write a type of
honest personal blog and travel magazine would be very conflicting and would cause the information in my magazine
to be very different from one another and possibly conflict one another throughout the magazine because on some
pages I would be only saying the positive things about the locations but on another page I would be being honest and
talking about the disadvantages as well which would possibly put my audience off from going to these locations
making my magazine very confusing if it’s a blog or if its trying to sell a holiday experience.
• What effect did my planning have on my product
– My planning allowed me to make my product more detailed because I finished sooner then I thought. But because I
had a range of other ideas that I had not used I was able to add more pages to my magazine, use ideas that I had not
done on any other pages giving my audience something different to look at and keep them interested, talk about new
topics which I hadn’t before to add a larger verity of information to my magazine to make sure that my magazine
appeals to everyone in my target audience.
Planning
11. • I managed my time well with some aspects of my product but with others I could of managed my time
much better. For example I didn’t complete my research on time because I ran out of time while doing
my production research but I completed my production ahead of time however if I was given more time
I would have spent additional time I would have fully completed my research on time and would have
spent even more time adding more pages to my magazine such as more advertisement pages to make
my overall product more detailed and appealing to my target audience.
• If I had more time I would of also wrote this evaluation in more detail and would be able to cover more
points about my product. Doing this could cause me to see more ways of how I could of improved my
product more so that next time I make a product similar to this one it can be of much better quality but
because I didn’t have enough time to cover all my points in detail the overall outcome of my
reflection/evaluation won’t be the quality it can be and result in me missing key things that I could use
to improve my skills and final product.
Time Management
12. Technical Quality's
-Both my product and the existing product have both made the
masthead the largest text on the page to make sure that it is the first
thing that the audience sees when they first look at the cover of the
magazine. Both covers have also used certain colors for the text to help
make the text stand out on the background while also looking
appealing and matching the color scheme so that the colors don’t make
the text look out of place.
-Both my product and the
existing product have
used certain parts of the
background picture to
make important parts of
there magazine stand
out. For example for my
product I have put some
text on the side of the
buildings on an angle to
make the text stand out
because of the different
perspective it gives off.
Where as on the existing
product they have put
the masthead on the top
half of the picture on a
completely green
background to make their
masthead stand out even
more.
-On my product I have made three sections at
the bottom of the page with a small amount of
information so that the audience knows roughly
what is talked about in my magazine and so that
the audience is more enticed to read my
magazine. Whereas on the existing magazine
cover they have used a
range of different
colored small cover lines
to draw the audience in
and give them just
enough information that
they want to read more.
-The existing product has used a white boarder round their cover making their magazine stand
out more on the shelf when in the middle of all the other products as well as giving them
space to put information such as the number of the magazine without ruining the background.
Whereas on my product the boarder is the same shade blue as the river to make the magazine
stand out and to also draw the audiences attention to the center of the page however the
border on mine is a lot smaller and is less likely to be seen unless you’re holding the magazine.
13. Aesthetic Qualities• What I think of my product
I personally think that my work does look good because I have used a selection of different creative ideas throughout my
product and my product is of the same high quality all the way through helping to keep consistency which makes my
product more appealing and visually attractive because of little key things such as making sure that the text on the double
page spread is in line and all the color schemes match the image in the background so that nothing looks out of place. You
can also see this on my A3 pages such as my “Time to fly” article, I where all the text is in line, I have used a faint gradient
behind the text to make it clearer to read but that doesn't ruin the background image. Personally one of the main aspects
that I like in my product is that every page is similar but has their own unique feature that makes them more interesting and
stand out. On my cover this is the text that looks like its on the side of the buildings next to the river, on my Ibiza article this
is the plane and small text underneath of the title making the masthead stand out more, on my advert this is the building in
the background that have been used to instantly tell the reader that this advert will be related to a city.
• Strengths if my product
-I think one of the strengths of my product is that it has an equal text to picture ratio to make sure that my product appeals
to the people in my target audience that wants a magazine with a average amount of text so that they can get all the
information that they need on the locations that they are looking at to know if its for them or not but there isn’t so much
text that they get overwhelmed and the magazine becomes unappealing to them. Because there isn’t an overwhelming
amount of text on the page this means that the audience can enjoy the picture that has been used as the background giving
them a visual representation of what the location looks like instead of having to rely on only information. For example on
the “Jump Into Nature” article the majority of the page is the picture however there is still all the important information as
well as website names incase the audience needs more helping to show to the audience that my product is reliable (an
image of this product is on the next slide).
Cover Ibiza article Advert
- I think another strength of my product is that all the color
schemes that I have used match the background image and help
to make the text bolder and more appealing to read because it
looks as though its meant to be on that image because of the way
the colors match with the background. This can help to draw the
readers eye and can help to make the amount of text less
overwhelming to the reader if they do feel like there is a large
amount of text.
14. Aesthetic Qualities• Weaknesses of my product
-I think one of the weaknesses of my product was that I didn't use any shots of the attractions that I talked about in my product such
as Clifford’s Tower and The Minster. I think this is a weakness because it means the audience can’t see the main attraction of these
locations which is one of the main reasons why they want to go. I think this is also a weakness because adding these pictures would
make my product more divers and different to other competitors on the market because these attractions are one of a kind and can
only be found in the UK, my target audience also specifically likes new experiences and seeing places which are one of a kind
therefore if I could improve my product I would add images of these locations so that my audience can see what these wonders look
like, enticing them to come see them in person. To do this improvement I would spend more time collecting shots during my
production/spare time of the locations and monuments that I want to include in my product so that I have a much larger selection to
choose from and to add a wider selection of images for my audience to look at.
-I think another weakness of my product is that when I got feedback on my product my audience couldn't tell that my advert was
actually an advert, this can be a weakness because it could mean that less people will use what I’ve advertised and my audience
might think that this product has been made by me however it is also good because adverts can make products seem more
unappealing to my audience and sometimes my audience may not like it purely because its an advert although if they couldn’t tell it
was an advert then they might be more likely to use the product/service that I have advertised.
-I think another weakness of my product was that the text throughout my product was very similar to each other in every article. I
think this is a weakness because it could possibly make my magazine seem quite bland and unappealing to my target audience who
like seeing creative and new things which stand out to them. For example if you look at the articles for a while you can tell that the
text is different but at first glace it all look very similar on each product resulting in my product not catching the attention of my
target audience when they walk by.
15. Audience Appeal
-I have appealed to my target audience by making
sure to keep to a modern style and theme
throughout my magazine on especially on my cover.
I have done this by using modern looking text and
made sure to used techniques that are a mix
between my ideas and ideas from existing luxurious
travel magazines, for example I have done this with
the text at the bottom of my cover talking about
Ibiza, England and Travel. I have also made my
magazine more appealing to my target audience by
including no advertisements on my cover so that my
target audience feels like my product is trying to
relate to them and help them to get the best
holiday that they can get instead of trying to
promote advertisements to them constantly which
will put them off from buying my magazine. This
appeals to my target audience because they prefer
professional and luxurious products.
-I have appealed to my target audience by using bright and
vibrant colors on my cover to make my magazine stand out and
give the audience a positive and happy feeling when they look at
the cover. For example I have increased the vibrancy and
brightness of the background to help make the background have
a larger effect on the background. This also helps to increase the
chances of my magazine standing out to my target audience and
increases the chances of them seeing it when its on the self with
other competitors.
-I have appealed to my target audience by using a color scheme that
matches my background to keep the feeling of consistency throughout my
product so that my magazine seems more professional and in order rather
then it being completely different on each page causing the audience to be
confused. I have also made my product tidy by using a colored background
with the gradient tool to make sure my text is clear and easy to read
without covering the image and making the page look unappealing.
I have appealed to my audience by using unique techniques to make my product
different to other competitors. For example I have wrote parts of my text on the
side of the buildings so that when the audiences attention is drawn down the
diver because of the entry shot technique I have used the first thing they see will
be that peace of writing that will make them want to read more.
16. -I have appealed to my target audience by making
sure all my text is in line to help make it look more
professional. I have also put all this text on the left
side of the double page spread to cover the side of
the picture that doesn’t have anything interesting for
the audience to look at and instead make it so that
the audience focuses on the right side of the picture
that leads up to the title of the article because of the
entry way shot that I have used when taking this
picture.
-I have appealed to my target audience by also
using different features in my articles to add a
more creative and unique tone. For example I
have added two pictures in the bottom left,
the waves above the website and phone
number information and the flag in the
bottom right to make my article look less
bland and stand out to other competitors on
my Time to relax article.
-I have appealed to my target audience by talking
about a range of different topics so that my audience
can get a range of different information and so that if
they don’t like one topic there will be a different
topic that they will like. This will help to make my
product more appealing to my target audience
because they will know that my product is relabel
and there will always be something that they can find
that they like.
-I have appealed to my target audience by
making sure to use a vibrant color scheme.
This appeals to my audience because of the
positive tone that the colors give to my
audience making the locations that I talk
about more desirable to go to because the
vibrant colors help to make the location look
more welcoming
18. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– I really like the layout of the text, it all fits in with the page and the image that it’s supporting.
– The photography is really interesting, taken from more elaborate angles and are all well lit, and
clearly expresses the magazines genre.
– The fonts are well chosen for each page and will appeal to the target audience.
– The house style is clear and represented really well throughout each of the pages.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• the text on the front cover, the images behind it makes the contrast a little strange, especially on the
buildings.
• I think that the final page could have had a different image added to it, because although it’s a really well
taken photograph, I think that there are York landmarks that could be featured to represent something
advertising an interesting day in the city, as well as giving the whole magazine more to focus on, as there is
already an image of the Ouse on the cover.
• The landmarks mentioned in the history comes alive could have been featured as either their own page or
as images
19. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
• Through the magazine all the photographs taken are all very high quality, it looks like you have taken a lot of time
to get the perfect shot and this makes the magazine look very professional. Also, the different undertones of the
colours in all the photos are different and compliment each other well.
• I like the font you used through the magazine, I like the fact that you chose the same font and the same colour
text for all the pages because this gave the magazine consistency and made it look put together and thought
through.
• I like the information you included to describe the city, I thought it was all very relevant and would be very useful
for someone travelling to York.
• I think the section on the back that sponsors the magazines Facebook page makes the magazine look professional.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• Although the shots very and are all different which makes them interesting, it could of been effective to include
different types of shots, for example through the magazine there are no close up shots.
• I like the simple style that you used for the magazine, however if I imagined the pages in a magazine format half of
the pages didn’t include any text and were just photos which can be a bit boring for the reader.
• You could’ve included an advert
20. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– The front cover looks authentic and the different colours of text add to this. The picture of the river is well
placed also.
– The first page is good with the text being on the side which isn't in focus
– I like the different styling of each photo, on the third page the dark picture of the woods is edited really well.
– The sign post page is done really well with the different landmarks in york. Also the history comes alive bit is
good.
– I like how its sort of a guide as well.
– The descriptions on each page are really detailed and are a big part of a magazine.
– The time to fly page is a really cool picture that spreads the diversity of the pictures taken even more
– Last page with the bee is a cool photo as well
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• Maybe an advert could've been included to make the authenticity of the product seem more real,
like maybe for a camera or something in York.
• I think the title text could've of been a different font or maybe a thicker one so it doesn't’t look like
its all the same text.
• On the signpost page the colouring for the text background could've been something brighter, but
now seeing it for each picture the is a different colour scheme of text which is a good idea.
21. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
-I agree that I should of used a different image for my polaroid on my final A3 page because an image of a York
landmark would appeal to my audience much more then the picture that I used and the image would better suit the
topic that I was talking about on that page.
-I also agree that I should of used a wider range of shots to make my magazine more interesting. Doing this might also
allow me to do more interesting layouts on my pages as well as doing more creative ideas such as changing the
perspective of the text so it looks like it is part of the environment in the picture.
-I also agree that I should of used a brighter image for the background of my History Comes Alive page to make my
page more appealing and to make my page more likely to grab the audiences attention. However I like the image that I
used for this page because I like the sign post in the middle of the page and I think that adds a more interesting theme
to my magazine. Because of this I could edit the image so that I still have the sign in the centre but edit my background
using the brightness or vibrant tool to make it more likely to get the audiences attention.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
-I disagree with the comments saying that I should of included an advertisement in my magazine because my A3 page
with the polaroid image was a advertisement. This is good and bad that my audience couldn’t tell that this feature was
an advert. This is a bad thing because the company that has paid to have their advertisement in my magazine to
advertise their product and brand meaning they might not be happy if the audience thinks that the advertisement is
made by my brand. However advertisements can sometimes make magazines more unappealing to my target
audience so if they can’t tell that it’s a advert then this will not affect the overall appearance of my magazine.
-I disagree with the feedback saying that I should of used a bolder text because bolder text wouldn’t of matched my
modern theme and style that I wanted to use for my magazine and would have been extremely different to the other
styles that I used throughout my product.
22. Peer Feedback Summary
What would I change?
-If I could make any changes to my product I would of used more shots of urban environments and would of
used a larger variety of shots to make my magazine more appealing, stand out more to my target audience
and more unique so that it stands out more when on the self with other competitors.
-I would also add more pages to my magazine so that I could have at least one more advertisement and one
more double page spread so that my audience can have a wider range of information to read and so that my
magazine can cover more topics to make it even more interesting.
-I would of also focused on taking images of more landmarks so that my magazine covers the main
attractions that my audience wants to see in much greater detail and so that they can get a visual
representation of the location rather then just relaying on information.
-If I could make any other changes I would also try to make sure to not use images that are similar to one
another so that my magazine doesn’t seem repetitive.
