3. Research
• For my research I had researched into similar existing horror movie posters, to get inspiration from them for my
final piece and analyse their colours, fonts and layouts. As well as analysing what worked with what, for
instance light colours would not work for a horror movie. I also researched into DVD analysis, examining all the
DVD conventions, that I would need for mine, and analysing what images worked with the colour.
• Researching different posters helped me figure out what I wanted for my idea. The you’re next film poster that I
analysed helped me think more about blurring effects I could use on Photoshop, and the Halloween poster
helped me think more about lighting and opacity, along with the uses of colour in lettering, having Easter eggs in
your poster.
• I also undertook a Survey Monkey questionnaire asking ten questions about my idea for my film. Questions
related to whether people found the combination of horror and comedy appealing, which characters appealed to
them in various films, etc.
• I asked different types of questions giving them the choice of answering through multiple choice answers (this
appealing to those with less time), and more open ended questions which allowed people to elaborate more and
hence giving me more information.
• The most useful question I asked on Survey Monkey was “what type of horror movie poster do you like best?”,
this was a multiple choice question, and 50% of the audience said that they they like horror movies to be simple
and minimalistic. 40% of the people said that they like dark and grungy, so I tried to a bit of the both, but keep it
as simple as possible, as 10% of the audience thinks that style is more effective.
• Following this I conducted one to one interviews with family members, friends and peer groups to gather more
information and being able to ask more in depth questions whilst also monitoring things like body language as I
described ideas. This allowed me to not only assess their answers but also evaluate tone of voice, body
movements, and emotions visually.
• This interview process was invaluable as, because I interviewed different demographics of people ie ages,
gender, lifestyle, I could understand their reactions to my ideas. Age, sex, social class all related to how they
perceived the concepts I described. As an example I found younger people weren’t as scared of horror movies;
they are used to more effects being used compared to my parents age who weren’t used to the make up and
special effects that are used in production now.
4. Research - Strengths
• Strengths
• One of the strengths of doing my research was my surveys for my audience research, as it really
helped me see statistically overall understand what a group of people thought about my work. It
was really interesting to understand how different demographics reacted to scenarios. My
survey results really helped me conclude what I was going to do next by seeing what the public
would want.
• An example of one of my strengths of doing my research was when I got to research similar
existing movie posters. This helped me gather thoughts on: initial reaction to the image, the
colour (whether black and white or primary colours symbolised the darkness of the movie), the
title and fonts and how people subliminally perceive the genre of the movie from these, the
characters in the posters and their hidden story which incites stereotyping but makes the
audience want to know to know more about them.
• Another strength of doing my research was when I analysed posters as it inspired me figure
upon what It was I was going to have for my lighting, camera angles, body positions and other
things that helped me along the way. It also helped me get the general idea of what horror
movie posters keep so similar, and what worked or what what didn't.
• Another strength of analysing my posters was working out why something was done in such a
way, and was the meaning behind the camera angle or the lighting.
5. Research - Weaknesses
• Weaknesses
• One weakness I found when doing my research was when I did my DVD analysis as most of things
that were on there I already knew and anything I didn't’t know would have a been too technical to
remember, so I would have to look back at it.
• Another weakness I found when doing my research was even though I did find it fun some of
posters I did like a film poster from the 80’s that was called fade to black was just too different to
what I was aiming for, and it was also time consuming so that wasn't very good.
• One of the weaknesses of doing my online research was the interviews as even though it did help
me gather up a lot more information from the public, the public are never the best to respond,
especially when sent out via email. Unless someone has time or a passion to feedback, often these
types of survey can be considered as junk mail or time consuming.
• Personally I would steer clear of family and friends as I feel their opinions can be biased towards
me.
• I feel I need to research a wider genre of audience. It is easy to ask those who are in to the genre of
film and get their feedback.. But to expand the audience I need to understand how I could get their
interest. For example, the Scary Movie series combined the genres of adrenalin jumpiness versus
comedic expectation and appealed to a wider audience because of this.
6. Planning
• For my planning I started of by doing a style sheet. So basically picking out Horror movie posters with a similar style
and color to what I was hoping for for my final piece. I then went on to reflecting as to how this posters have
influenced my final piece and why have they.
• I then when onto another style sheet but this time focusing on the fonts and titles of other films. I then after researching
a few made my own logo. So with the logo that I though were okay but not what I wanted, were what I had to talk
about. So this means going over the messages hidden within the logo and if it work with it being in my poster, and then
go over the logo that I had picked and why I think it will work better with poster idea I've got.
• Along with this I also made a slide on hardware and software, discussing the different tools that were need for when I
did my work in the room, and If I was to book equipment the advantages and disadvantages of doing that.
• The next thing I did for my planning was my layout plans, In which I would do a rough design of what I want my
poster to look like. This helped me gather together what I wanted as a much ore rough version. We also used a arrows
to show what were the most useful features we had used to create our posters.
• We then did our storyboards, afterwards where we planned out how each shot was going to appear and what areas we
were filming worked best where in the shots we were presenting in the trailer. Along with this I also did a slide
afterwards, titled shot list. This would focus on what position the we had to be in when the shots in the trailer were
being filmed.
• The next slide I did in my planning was focusing on props and locations that would be need for my trailer. Then the
slide after this I focused on what were the strengths and weaknesses for these location and how we had to behave in a
location.
• Then the next slide I focused on my contingency planning so what could be a potential issue and what I could do to
solve it. Then we had to do another slide where we focused on health and safety and what could we do to prevent this
accident from happening.
• On the next slide I focused on music planning, here I put the links of the websites on where I found this music clips. I
also did short paragraphs a on where they would be in the trailer and how this worked with the shots that I was going to
film. Along with how did I download the music and how is it going to be on the software that I'm going to edit.
• Then for the last thing that I did for my planning was my schedule, so what would I be dong on this specific day and
what resources would be required for me to achieve this goal on this day.
7. Planning - Strengths
• One strength of doing my planning was when we did our layout plans for our
designs, as it helped fully flesh out what my final design was for my poster and
got me thinking about elements that I could add into my poster. Such as the
conventions and the title being at the top and the positioning of the main image
depended on my photography.
• Also another strength of doing my planning was when I did my storyboards for
our trailer as it helped me fully flesh out what shots I was going to film for my
trailer and what angle would work best. Along with what shot was effective when
being being placed after a scene that was at a different pace.
• Another strength of doing my planning was when I did my style sheet as the
posters inspired me to think about what I was going to have for my initial design
for my poster. Looking at similar colors and fonts helped me think about how I
was going to have the lighting when I book the photography room or how I that
image would have worked if changed the brightness of it on Photoshop.
8. Planning - Weaknesses
• A weakness of doing my planning was when we did our style sheets
on pre production as I had already had my font and colours for my
poster sorted out already. This was totally ingrained as an idea so
although I understood the reasoning behind it, in conclusion it wasn’t
beneficial.
• Also another weakness of doing my planning was when we did our
schedules. Its always good to make a programme of your works.
However there is always the unforeseen eventualities, whether this is
personal timing, problems with equipment, weather etc, and it is
always good to build in a contingency.
• Another weakness of doing my planning was when I had to do the
strengths and weakness of the locations that I had decided this was
very time consuming and I felt like I had not gained anything from it
apart from a loss of time.
9. Time Management
• In conclusion, for this project, keeping on top of deadlines was a major concern for me, especially with me having two weeks off towards
the end of the project due to unfortunate circumstances.
• If I had more time I would have spent more hours making the handprint on my main poster better making it clearer and more sharp. I
would also make several changes to my logo as I wasn’t happy about my final design; looking back over all I have learned and developed
in my knowledge using Photoshop I feel I could now produce something more professional. Experience helps and it is easy to look back
on my journey of doing this project and seeing how I would change things and do them differently and use the skills that I have gained.
• When it came to planning for my time management, events that happened didn't’go in order of what I had planned in my schedule. In my
schedule I was planning to start by filming my trailer, but that got delayed as I wasn't going until the next month because we were going to
Staffordshire, (where we were going to film) to meet family. So I started off by doing my character posters first, by booking out the studio
to take the photographs and then finished them and moved onto my main poster. When I was halfway through finishing my main poster, I
finally got the chance to go down to Staffordshire and film my trailer. Once my main poster was done I moved onto my DVD cover next
as I thought that would be easier, and then when I did that’s when I started to edit my trailer. So the part of my production that I was
originally going to do first ended up being the last part of production that got finished. Overall if I was to do this again I would budget for
my own transport so that I'm independent to my schedule and my time would be more flexible.
• The story I chose for my film was an urban legend in Staffordshire. With more time, I could have been able to travel more to the location
for filming however I was dependent on transport and other peoples commitments.
• Due to the circumstances of my late submission I felt the pressure of being able to get my project handed in on time, and had to learn (due
to the size of my media files) how to use file transfer websites such as “WeTransfer” as my project was too large to send to my tutor via
email.
• I also need to make sure that I document how I do my work, for example screen shots, in order to show how I have done things as I am so
enthusiastic about getting the end result, I forget that I need to show how to do it!”
10. Technical Qualities –
Main poster
Similarities
Halloween
and Kill
• Similar angles, the
baddie is cast in the
darkness.
• Uses of different
colors in the
lettering, with their
being meaning
behind them.
• Slogan – but my
slogan is much more
longer, but theirs is
short and deep,
making more scary.
• Title – They have
just used a basic
white font but mine
is a lot more colorful
• Uses of dark
shadow, with the
light reflecting on
the non antagonists
face.
Differences
Halloween
• Less spoilers: only one cast
member at the top.
• Close up shot, uses of lighting
presented better here.
• Official release date
Kill
• Blood hand print as an overlay
image, which connects to the
blood stains going across the
sides of my poster.
• No official release date – should
have been released for my main
poster but I kept the “Coming
this October” as it’s nice
connection with the other
character posters I had made.
• Long shots and not close ups
unlike Halloween., which if the
poster was done again they
would be close up, because with
them being mediums shots you
can’t see much of the emotion
tats being expressed on the
characters face.
11. Technical Qualities –
character poster
Similarities
Kill and Jigsaw
• Uses of shadow- when
projecting on the face
because of the darkness
surrounding he characters
• Both anomalously
give release date, but don’t
specify when.
• Uses of different colors
for the lettering.
• Title – simple white font
used for he title but mine
is a lot more colorful.
• Slogan – simple slogans,
though mine is more of a
character title, connects
the audience with the
character, letting them
know a little bit about the
character and letting the
audience relate to them by
knowing their job role.
Differences
Kill
• Letter for a number of
different character
posters- which I was
inspired by first saw
film posters that had
been release, which
did a similar thing.
• Billing block - too
big, if I was to
another poster. I
would do a more
condensed version.
• Different positions:
more of a close up on
Jigsaw
Jigsaw
• No cast or crew on
the poster to not take
attention away from
the main character.
• Iconic use of make up
to portray what the
series character is
known for.
• Different Camera
angles
12. Technical Qualities – DVD cover
Similarities between The
Amityville horror and Kill
• Description of the DVD
included just above the
special features.
• Reviews on the cover -
though on my cover there
is more evidence that the
film is good by having
more than one film.
• Billing block and
technical details at the
bottom.
• Similar uses of color and
shade. Uses of dark
orange being used in the
poster.
• Special features are
presented at the back of
both covers.
• Barcode placed on the
back of the cover in order
to purchase the DVD
Differences
The Amityville horror
• Slogan on the DVD cover of the
Amityville Horror - the reason I hadn't
done this is because in my planning I
hadn't planned to put a slogan on my
DVD cover, seeing a lot of them
without slogan.
• No age rating – don’t know how old
you have to be to watch the film.
• A lot more technical details added to
the bottom.
• Special features been elaborated more
further on the Amityville horror cover
the kill one.
Kill
• No photos on the back cover just
reviews, this was because I didn't’t
have any photos planned and didn't’t
want to use any random images that
didn't’t look very good.
• No special edition included – this is
something I didn't’t plan to put in but I
should of, even if I put standard edition
I t would have worked.
• Uses of color are basic, for example
I've just got a red background for my
cover, and Amityville horror has got
back shadow light and different shades
of green
13. Technical Qualities - Trailer
• IT Chapter two trailer
• https://www.youtube.com/watc
h?v=zqUopiAYdRg
• Kill teaser trailer
Similarities between IT
chapter two trailer and Kill
• Both teaser trailer – show
for trailer their both slow
and suspenseful.
• Both horror films, that
don’t show off the main
antagonist that much in
the trailer.
• Similar style of title cards.
• The pace of scenes in the
trailers are both similar.
• Location footage
presented in a similar
manner.
Differences
IT chapter two
• All the title cards are
featured are different
times of the trailer.
Whether mine all are all
featured at the end.
• Long clip at the
beginning of the trailer,
which a lot of trailers
don’t do.
• A lot more various
scenes of the film,
showing how fast paced
the trailer is.
Kill
• All scenes from my trailer are
based around he same location the
entire time.
• Mine teases much more with it
not giving out much context of
the film.
14. Aesthetic Qualities – Main poster
Strengths
• Simple but effective is the best
approach to a horror trailer, which
is what I’ve done here.
• Good use of lighting with the
shadow casting over my face
which was originally the lighting.
• Uses of color in lettering used
really well, as it connotes to the
black and white nuns.
• Blood splatter for the design of the
poster, that links in with the
handprint.
• Lighting used well for the nuns
eyes as it almost looks like their
glowing in the dark.
• The color of the font is orange
which is a connotation to October.
Weaknesses
• Hand print not clear enough,
looks like my face is
bleeding.
• Needs an actual air date, as
its not a a teaser poster.
• Billing block to large, if I
was to do it again I would
condense it.
• Needs more over layers, as
the color of the poster looks
a bit bland and was not what
I originally hoped for.
• Lettering on the slogan on
the second line needs to be
indented more to the right to
look even.
• Doesn’t look funny enough
to be classed as a comedy
film.
15. Aesthetic Qualities – Character
posters
Strengths
• Good overlay image,
made the poster look very
natural when been seen.
• Title spells out on all of
the posters when they are
put together, so one letter
per poster.
• Character titles, which
work really well because
it teases the characters
identity slightly, which
encourage the viewer to
watch the film.
• Blood patterns looks neat,
keeping in sync with each
character poster.
• Billing block along with
the logos make it look
official.
Weaknesses
• The slogan for the character
“the scary nun”, isn't bright
enough.
• Better design for my logo,
as I feel like the logo that I
have come up with is to
colorful.
• Looks too much like a
horror poster, which is not
the case because it’s a horror
spoof film.
• Letter needs to be angled
more to make it look better.
• Experiment more with
different overlays as it looks
a bit bland.
16. Aesthetic Qualities – DVD cover
Strengths
Weaknesses
• The bottom of the back cover doesn't’t look
real despite it having all the features on there.
• The back cover looks a bit bland and needs
more color.
• Back of the cover has no images which are
usually on DVD covers.
• The image of the cover looks a bit messy with
the overlay I’ve used.
• Missing a slogan, which will increase the
chances of someone buying the DVD, if it
sounds good..
• Includes most of the conventions that should be
included on DVD.
• Ratings of the film been presented on the DVD
cover.
• Brilliant uses of color when presenting the cast
on the top of the front cover.
• Precise detail. Even the website for York college
and the movie are included under the billing
block.
17. Aesthetic Qualities - Trailer
Strengths
- Good pace of scenes, considering its
only a teaser trailer.
- Brilliant shots, in terms of how scary
nature can be.
- Brilliant locational use, travelling to
area that’s historic for a horror film.
- A teaser trailer that’s teasing that
there's going to be another horror
character in the film.
Weaknesses
- Too many shots of trees, eventually
looks very dull in comparison to other
horror film trailers.
- Looks like a mask, if I was to do the
project again I would apply makeup
for Valek as opposed to using a mask.
- The mask doesn’t look like its on
right when the nun turns around.
- Title card for the title hasn’t been
pulled out far enough on the width .
18. Audience Appeal – Main
poster
I have appealed to my target audience by keeping all my posters including
this one simple and minimalistic. With 50% of the audience on
SurveyMonkey wanting that. Also Jigsaw (the character from the SAW
franchise) and Valek (the Nun from the conjuring series) both got 50/50
on which was the scariest character meaning that they are both equally
scarier opponents making this film more effective by having those
characters in there. I have also appealed to my target audience by range of
colour that included through in the posters. With the colours in the
lettering having connections to the film or the period that it is being
released. I have also appealed to my target audience by this poster
working well with its uses of shadow and lighting. I think that nun’s eyes
have worked well with them slightly glowing in the dark and that's
something that my target audience would deem as quite clever. Another
benefit of the uses of shadowing in the poster was the lighting involved
with the photography of my original photos. The lighting casted on my
photo has worked well with the overlays on the photo.
19. Audience Appeal –
Character poster
I have appealed to my target audience for my character posters
because I have kept all my posters simple and minimalistic
which 50% of the audience said they wanted on
SurveyMonkey. Another way I have appealed to my target
audience is by balancing the serious horror of the movie and a
comedic element or connotation that points out what genre it
really is. I have also tried to make the character posters as
interesting as possible without including too much into it, such
as images or lettering. Another thing that would have appealed
my target audience is the connection of the character posters
and that each letter on the poster spells out the title. I have also
appealed to my audience by giving each character poster title
names which adds the comedy element as their names like that
Jigsaw guy.
20. Audience Appeal – DVD
cover
I have appealed to my target
audience because I made the
main image of the DVD
cover looks as good as
possible, with its uses of
overlays and lighting for the
poster. I have also appealed to
my target audience by
including the logos colours in
the names of the cast and
have also included a summary
of the film at the back cover,
which like every DVD
summary tries to sell itself as
much as possible.
21. Audience Appeal - trailer
I have appealed to my target
audience because I have kept my
trailer as a teaser trailer and have
only put in a few fast paced scenes
for excitement. However I have
kept this trailer simple. I have also
lightly broken the fourth wall, with
the scene when the nun turns around
and is facing the camera. With 80%
of the audience thinking that
breaking the fourth wall was
effective in a horror film. I have
also appeared to my target audience
by teasing one of the antagonists
who will be in the film at the end of
the trailer. This is really effective
and works even better with horror
movie trailers.
23. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
• “The main thing I like about your FMP is the posters, as they all keep
the same theme and focus well on good lighting. I think that the
character posters were really well presented with each letter being
presented on the character poster and shows a good connection of the
title when all being presented as a compilation.”
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• “I think the main improvement you could make in your FMP is your
choice of genre as horror/spoof films don’t end up getting good reviews
and have a bad response from the audience usually. I also think that
your logo needs improvement, while I like the idea of each letter being
presented on each character poster. I do however think the logo doesn't’t
fit well with the posters style.”
24. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
• “What I like about what you have made on your FMP was your trailer
as it presents its horror style really well, it shows how how exciting and
fast paced trailers can be. I also like the main poster as it had a nice blue
overlay that the other posters don’t have.”
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
• “I think the main improvement you could have made to your FMP is the
lighting in some of your posters, where its difficult to read a slogan or be
able to tell who the character is in the poster. Also each poster isn't
represented well in terms of body positions and facial expressions as
they all need to be similar and I think they look different.”
25. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
• “What I like about what you have made for your FMP is your DVD
cover as it shows great attention to detail and shows how well you’ve put
all the features onto it. I also like your posters as well as it shows how
brilliantly you’ve with the lighting and shows in a similar way to your
DVD cover its attention for detail. I like how you’ve even changed the
colour of some of the words, so they match up well with the word’s
theme.”
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• “The main improvement that you could have made in your FMP is your
choice of colours presented in the posters. In most of them the writing is
too dark so its difficult to see what its actually telling you. I also didn't’t
like the trailer either as it didn't’t present itself well enough to be
considered a spoof.
26. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
• I agree with lots of things from my peer feedback with a lot of the things
that are positive and negative. The main thing I agree that I had only
thought about when it came up on the peer feedback was the fact that
horror/spoof films don’t often end up getting a good reputation or good
reviews. I also agree that the connection of the character posters
involving the letters was a good idea and that the logo doesn't fit in well
with the the posters as its not the right style.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
• The main things that I disagree with on my peer feedback is the lighting
problem in the posters. As I agree its difficult to read the text in some
posters. I do however think that the lighting in my posters were good as I
used a professional camera, with professional lights, and spend a while
when taking the pictures, what the best angle lights should be when there
beaming on me. I also disagree with the body positions in the posters not
being similar as it would be boring if the posters were all pulling the
same facial expression, and body positions and wouldn't interest the
viewer at all.
27. Peer Feedback Summary
The main change I would make to my posters would be to redo my
the design of my logo. As this was such an early idea and never
got developed into something that I liked. I just don’t like the style
of it and think that if I had more time I would change it. I also
would scrap the comedy element as it was really just presented as
a horror, and from my peer feedback it made me think more that
spoof films don’t have a good reputation. I also think that I would
slightly change the text of the posters so that they are a lot brighter
and easier to see. I would also change the blood handprint on my
main poster as its not clear enough and just look like I'm bleeding.
