Initial Reaction
 When contemplating various ideas that I could work with, an AI (artificial intelligince) app called ‘Lensa Ai’ had been released onto
the app store. The app soon spread and became the latest trend, something which hadn’t hit the popular status since ‘Remini’.
Shortly after another app bounced off the success of this concept, called ‘Replica’. This further advanced the ability of photo
manipulation.
 Going on social media daily I found many posts of people’s various avatars and different themes of a picture which they uploaded
onto the site. Using my own editing apps, I also found that certain apps have updated their software to include the function of AI
such as ‘Picsart’.
 As a graphic designer myself I started to weigh up the fears and anxieties behind the power of such apps. How a lot of the
material that a lot of people spend time making can be used to create someone else’s material without recognition or copyright
claim. I want to research into positives but mainly the negative sides of AI so that I am able to back up my case that this is having
an adverse affect on the creative industry.

How AI work is made?
AI is made from computer processing, taking large amounts of data with fast
intelligent patterns and placing them in an algorithm.
A lot of data and coding is needed in order to process the material, allowing the
machines to mimic a level of human intelligence. This is called cognitive
computing. The computers can run thousands of tasks extremely quickly in a
short amount of time.
Whilst there are many components that go into data processing, the main ones I
researched were
 GPU (Graphical Processing Units) which are able to make hundreds of
calculations that are beyond the human brain in a short amount of time.
 Intelligent Data Processing which allows you to see the figures of what it’s
producing at a fast rate.
Poll
Observation:
I put a survey on my Instagram highlight asking for peoples thoughts on AI apps and their
effect on the graphic design industry (see right). The survey didn’t cover an ideal
demographic as my audience aren’t all in the creative field, however comments made on
the post showed some heartfelt feeling and reaction (see next slide)
What this says about AI:
Whilst I do think some benefits apply to AI such as making art, for those who don’t know
how to operate softwares such as Photoshop, a lot more accessible, I can however
counteract this with the fact that the steady decline hasn’t appeared yet, due to the
newness of these apps. There are still a lot of people that don’t know about these apps
and to commission a piece of work is to fund someone’s work and potentially their
livelihood.
Instagram Art
 As seen from the Instagram post in my previous slide, AI has a strong affect on online artists, and an artist
showing disgust in the app for it’s lack of appreciation of the high level work artists undertake, spending lengthy
periods of time and skill making, something requiring a high level of creativity. When I have created
commissioned designs I have drawn on 3 years at College, and sometimes days spent creating a piece, sending
it backwards and forwards to the Client for their approval.
 On a separate point the artist claims that the app has stolen already designed art for the function of their usage
without copyright or notifying the artists, showcasing a further amount of hostility between the two platforms.
The greatest fear that a lot of artists have is that the big AI companies will be able to monopolise art that’s
going straight to them and it will no longer need workers/artists to produce the work.
 Taking a quote from Anna Riddler (artist) “AI can’t handle concepts: collapsing moments in time, memory,
thoughts, emotions – all of that is a real human skill, that makes a piece of art rather than something that
visually looks pretty” which is why artists are having another issue with AI. It is the equivalent of watching a
pirate film for example where the quality is not comparable to the cinematic experience. The art form has
lowered as the quality has lowered. Fingers, and other body parts often “glitch” and don’t register on a AI
generated image.
Fact file
 Lens AI charging people that have installed the app for photo packs of non consensual art taken from other artists.
 Greg Rutkowski, a fantasy artist who is well known for his magical drawings, appeared in hundred of search results on various AI websites,
highlighting that they have stolen his work and converted it into something similar. He stated “Right now, when you type in my name, you see
more work from the AI than work that I have done myself”
 Data laundering – converting stolen data without any permission in order to gain profit
 Associated words - Forgery. Fraud. Identity theft.
 Rules going against the point to counter act them:
1. Art that’s placed online is there for everyone to see so it’s opening up to the work being stolen.
2. AI only uses itself as a template in a similar way other artists do to gain inspiration.
3. AI art will only grow and these companies won’t be shut down due to their huge success.
Synopsis
Logline: Looking into the ever-growing world of graphic design and the deep affect graphic design has on art.
Art, evolves throughout life. I understand that.
From cave paintings to Banksy, and in a more recent evolution, graphic design and 3D design.
The computer based age that we live in has provided careers for many talented and creative artists
that have commissioned many great pieces of work.
However due to further advancement in technology AI technology has taken over the globe, making
it as easy as downloading a free app on your phone.
Does this make the creative industry redundant? I have talked about graphic design and art, but
reflecting on my mood board, other industries such as make up and costume (see right: AI versus
“Glow Up” a BBC programme for make up artisits
Will this make creativity a dying medium? And for me, is graphic design now becoming a dying art?
Influences and style
In terms of the influences I picked up making this documentary my overwhelming thought is that the topic is something that I take very seriously as a profession of
my own. It’s my livelihood which I make money from and If something has a detrimental effect on it then it, affects me financially.
Through further research via other sources and materials, I found numerus documentaries which backed the various points I want to make. “iHuman” (2019) a
Netflix documentary is something which explores similar points; not with art but the advancement of powerful technology and a changing society behind it.
Something which really made me think was that “computer algorithms can reveal our political views and sexual orientation. Privacy is gone.”
This thought can be likened to AI art as well. You can adapt a picture to look like anyone. In any scenario.
The documentary style of iHuman was played off almost as if it’s a horror. Horror for what the future represents. This is a style that I would like to reflect in mine.
‘We need to talk about A.I’ (2020) was another documentary I watched. Whilst this one remained a little more factual, the over arching point was there. James
Cameron stated that “maybe we are just here to give birth to the child of the machine civilization” showing the severity of the issue.
Whilst I couldn’t find any documentaries specifically pinpointing AI, I had found several videos online addressing the issue. ‘Sam Does Arts’ released a video
confronting the issue and perpetrators behind these issues. Looking at LAION as a site “which contains over 5 billion pieces of image and text data, including
copyrighted and private data, and looking into their ethics, the website’s policy rules claimed that any non consensual artwork is taken for research, but then the
website markets and commercialises their images.
