Secondary Research
• When I was researching my for my trailer and poster designs the films that stood out to me the most for their
trailers were Suspiria (2018) and Us and I think that the main strength of my research into these two film trailers
was that I chose them because they were great examples of two different types of trailers, Suspiria being tension
building, surreal and atmospheric, and Us being inventive and action packed. I explained in a lot of detail what
made these great trailers that are compelling to watch and how the trailers play on and explore tropes in horror
to create something familiar yet fresh. I also explained how Junji Ito’s work had an impact on my trailer concept
when I was researching and although Uzumaki is a completely different type of media to my trailer I still took
inspiration from the way Junji Ito incorporates surreal themes into the horror of his manga through both body
horror and experimental horror, I mainly put my inspiration from this into the second half of my trailer as I tried
to make a gory nightmarish sequence.
• I think the main problem with the research I did into my research of existing products is that I looked too much
into what the products did right rather than what things they did that were wrong such as the trailers being a bit
spoiler heavy or how it would be difficult to translate the same fear from a Junji Ito manga into a trailer as he
normally focuses on otherworldly creatures so if I were to improve my existing product research I would write
more about how I could learn from the weaker points of these existing products as I know this would've helped
me to develop my final product. I think that I also could’ve improved the research I did into poster designs and
front covers if I had looked at different products as I only looked at the poster/cover designs for the existing
products I looked at for my trailer, I think that I would have more to talk about if I looked at a better variety of
posters so I could talk about more. Another issue I have with my research into existing products is that I hardly
spoke about the technical achievements in the products which meant that I had less of a fully developed idea
about this area when working on my own technical qualities in both my trailer and poster design
• Overall I think I put a lot of detail into analyzing the aesthetic choices made in the existing products which gave
me a better understanding of how I wanted my own trailer to look as well as influencing aesthetic choices I made
in both my trailer and poster although if I put some more research into the technical qualities of these products
then it would’ve given me more to look for when making my own descisions on tech
Primary Research Survey
• Strengths
• The main strength of my survey was that I tried to cover all the
questions I needed from a larger audience such as what they wanted in
a horror film and what they didn’t want. I think that by asking straight
forward questions like this was great for my research because it let me
have a better understanding of what would and wouldn’t work in my
trailer.
• After learning that my audience didn’t want to see bad acting in my
trailer I immediately began thinking of ways to make my trailer look
exciting/intriguing without needing lots of acting as I knew that the
actor I chose wasn’t very experienced, due to the survey I decided to
give this character only a small amount of dialogue that wouldn't need
to be lip-synced so that Nathan didn’t have to go through several re
shoots and I could edit the trailer easier. Because of this decision I think
I saved myself a lot of time filming and probably increased the quality
of my trailer.
• I didn't need to ask the age of the people taking my survey as I only
sent the survey to people in the age of my target audience which
meant I was getting answers that the audience I aimed for were giving
so the replies were definitely what appeals to my audience.
• Weaknesses
• The main weakness of my survey was that I didn't ask enough
questions to be able to have a clear understanding of what the
audience wanted from my film. I only got to know the certain themes
that they like where I could’ve learnt the gender of the protagonist
they would like to see and what settings appeal to them. I think that if I
also asked more people I’d also have a much better understanding on
how a wider audience would think.
• I asked some questions such as when they liked to watch horror films
and who with which in retrospect were pretty useless, if I asked when
they wanted the films to be set or what type of killer they wanted then
I would definitely have a clearer view of what my audience wanted
from my trailer.
Primary Research Interviews
• Strengths
• In my interviews I only interviewed people from my target audience (16-22 years old) as I wanted to
know what has influenced their taste in horror films and how they felt about ideas and themes that I
wanted to show in my trailer.
• All of the interviewees preferred realism to the surreal/supernatural so I made the main focus of my
trailer the serial killer so that the target audience would be satisfied that the villain of the film is
grounded in reality and because I still really wanted surreal elements in my trailer I decided to put these
elements into aesthetic choices such as the co loured lighting and the film grain which makes the trailer
look distorted and give it a style that stands out and I think that this was the right decision to make as it
would leave the viewer happy and intrigued while letting me make the creative decisions I wanted to.
• After learning that my target audience likes poster designs that are simple and recognizable I tried
making my front cover more simple by including the symbol I used in the trailers, this thought that
stemmed from my interview meant that the two products were visually linked while the simple design of
the symbol fit the description for what the audience would look for in a poster design
• I used daytime shots in my trailer after asking my audience if they would be fine seeing that in a horror
film and their response help me decide to have gore in my trailer as the response was that daytime
horror is good as long as it contrasts with the setting so that’s exactly what I planned to do by having
shots of blood in the daytime.
• Weaknesses
• I think I could’ve asked more questions about what my audience would like to see in a horror film rather
than making guesses off of what they have already seen as it would give me a better understanding of
what I could’ve included to appeal to them.
• I think that if I had interviewed a few more people rather than just three then I could’ve gotten more
varied responses or learnt that all the responses were fairly similar so that I would have a much better
grasp on the current expectations of a horror film in the target audience I chose
•
Subject Research
• For my subject research I looked into the infamous serial killer Ted Bundy, a website on how the police investigate missing persons cases, and an
article on mass paranoia throughout history. I put research into these three subjects as I wanted to have a better understanding of the themes in
my product (paranoia, missing people, and killers).
• Strengths:
• I think my research into Ted Bundy was the most interesting as it confirmed the research I had done that what makes a killer scary to my target
audience is how a killer can blend into society which is exactly what Ted Bundy did, I think that the fear of serial killers must’ve been highly
influenced by Ted Bundy’s actions so when I researched him I made sure to point out the similarities in his crimes and the points my target
audience made in the interviews about what made killer scary.
• I put a lot of detail into what makes paranoia such a terrifying concept and focused mainly on cases of paranoia that caused deaths, murders and
public hysteria. I explained that I took an interest in paranoia as it was an area of physiological horror I hadn’t seen explored often so learning
how there are still cases of mass paranoia that have happened in the last few years is actually pretty frightening once you learn that a simple
prank video with people dressed up as clowns can be popularized and twisted by social media to a point where real murders were commit by
people dressing as clowns and this is all because of the social fear that can be created by a community turning on itself so I wanted to give a
sense in my trailer that this was the direction that my film would be heading.
• Weaknesses
• I think the main weakness in my research into paranoia was that I hadn’t spoken about how I could actually use the paranoia in my trailer. The
only shots in my trailer where paranoia was prevalent were the shots of the missing poster, the description slide and the shot of Nathan looking
across the water and I think this is a shame as there were so many way that I could’ve explored the theme of paranoia but because I hadn’t
listed some thoughts about how I could convey a visual sense of paranoia the theme ended up being pushed into the background.
• I think that my research into how police handle missing persons cases could’ve be replaced by research into a better subject as I never ended up
using any of the information I had learnt and if I had put research into something that was more practical such as a video or article on how
trailers are made and what makes a trailer the most exciting.
Research Experiments
Stregths
I think my production experiments worked well because I really wanted to
practice these techniques in preperation for my trailer, I knew that if I didn’t
then it would damage the overall appeal of my trailer.
Testing the differences in movement from the shoulder rig to the steadicam
really help me choose to film with the shoulder rig for the first person shots as
it was smoother and more efficient to set up and this decision would only
have been made if I had compared them the way I did by analysing the
quality of both clips taken and then assesing how quick it was to get both
ready.
I think that learning how to grade my trailer properly in the experiments saved
me a lot of issues later in production and helped me to quickly and effectively
grade my footage without making any of the colour stand out too much like in
my music video so learning this helped me grade my trailer to a subtle level I
did’nt think I could.
Learning how to propely implement film grain into my footage meant that I
could give my footage the retro look that I wanted so that my trailer could look
similar in quality to a 70’s giallo horror film. Although I struggled at first to
ovelay the grain I soon learnt that if I gave the grain a colour grade then it not
only apllied the grade to the footage but it made the grain appear more
visable while making the footage look older. These techniques were crucial
for my work in my trailer as they were some of the key aesthetic choices I
used and really brought the daytime shots to life.
Weaknesses
I think that I could’ve graided the same piece of footage in several ways so
that I could learn more about graiding techniques, this would’ve helped give
my trailer a look more reminiscent of typical horror films
I think that I couldv’e shown experiments in lighting design in preperation for
the coloured lighting we used in the trailer as we hadn’t practiced setting up
lighting it took us a long time to get ready for the shots where we used this
lighting.
Planning- Pre Production
 I think that in my planning I worked well when I was making decisions on how I could incorporate my
influences into the aesthetic of my production through aspects such as red and green colour schemes and
how I planned to use vivid colours in the lighting of some shots, I also gave detail on what influenced my
decisions in my poster design which helped me get a better understanding of what exactly I was trying to
create aesthetic wise in my poster. I feel like in the sections of my planning where I talked about the
creative process in aesthetic, costume design and prop choice were where I succeeded mainly due to
how I explained why I made each decision but I think the area of planning that helped me the most
during my production was my thoughts on how I would make my music in Garage Band as it genuinely
helped me as a guide for the synth instruments I would use and what influenced me to use these in my
final piece of music, the reason it helped so much was because I had no prior knowledge of how to use
Garage Band if I didn’t plan for this then I think that I would’ve failed at making my own music and I
would’ve used pre existing music which would've greatly weakened the effect I wanted the music in my
trailer to have, the music I made had the purpose of making the viewer feel an increase in tension and to
give a sense of paranoia and that wouldn't exist in my trailer if I used different music.
• I think that the weakest section of my pre production was my schedule as I made it fairly quickly without
thinking of other factors in my life such as when I have work and what the weather would be like for
filming so because I had work on the weekend I had to film I had to complete my schedule in reverse
where I was meant to be making my trailer I was making my poster and music in the first week and then I
worked on the trailer for the next two weeks and made improvements in the last week. The mistakes I
made while making the production schedule impacted the whole of my production as it threw off my time
management. I think that another aspect of my pre production that I could’ve improved was how I talked
about my influences from existing products as I still only focused on what aspects of existing work I
thought was good rather than talking about what I thought were weaknesses in the products and how I
could learn from this and improve the faults in existing products for my own work.
Time Management
• I think that my weakest area of my production was my how I managed my time, the main
mistake I made that caused me to have worse time management than I wanted was that I
didn't think of outside factors while planning my production schedule during pre production,
this meant that I had to film a week later than I wanted to because I had to work on the
weekend I was meant to film so I left myself less time to edit my trailer so certain aspects of
my trailer such as the dialogue sound quieter than it should because I was too busy focusing
on the visuals of the trailer that the dialogue became an after thought because of all the
work I was trying to get done. This mistake with my schedule meant I was constantly having
to improvise my time management when I could’ve had a smooth work schedule.
• I think that because I did manage to finish in time to a point where I was happy with what I’d
made it showed that I made the right choices when I was trying to make my trailer in time,
although it would’ve helped me a lot to film my trailer in the first week I think it actual helped
me a lot to have the first week to design my poster and make the music for my trailer as it
allowed me to edit my trailer around the music so editing the trailer was made slightly easier
for me. I found the time limit pretty stressful however I think that I managed my time fairly
well after the mistakes I made with my schedule as I quickly decided to spend the first week
making preparations to my trailer so I would be fully ready to edit and I think this decision
was the only reason I managed to finish on time because instead of doing nothing in the first
week I spent my time wisely by developing the music and poster designs.
Technical Qualities
I tried basing my music off of the soundtrack to Hereditary as I remembered that the music in that film made me feel
an extreme sense of tension so after listening to the sound track I began working on my music in GarageBand trying to
use a similar base sound that increased in the background to try and give a then same intensity to the music and it
surprisingly worked fairly well. I tried to give the music a creepy retro vibe by using lots of synth sounds in subtle ways
and although this worked it also felt fairly messy at some points where I would’ve liked it to sound clean, this didn’t
take away from the horror of the music but for me it could’ve improved by taking away some of the instruments to
make it feel less full. I think that one of the reasons the Hereditary soundtrack worked so well was because the sound
track knew that less was more so the subtle use of instruments was what added to the tension that was being built by
the bass.
I wanted to make the slides introducing things such as the symbol, the director, the title and the release date to
feel significant in my trailer so they didn’t just fill time but I wanted them to stand out. I think that I successfully
made these slides stand out by animating them so that the words appeared one by one, this helped me time the
slides to the music. I thought that the only way that I could improve my slides was if I put the text on top of a
moving background however I think that this could’ve been too much information to take in at once. I think that
the slide defiantly look retro especially due to the grain that I gave to it.
When I was thinking about the compositions I wanted in my trailer I thought mainly about how shapes would play a
role in my trailer and how I could use the natural rectangular shapes in the compositions of alleys, tree lines and
walkways, I knew that by framing these rectangular shapes I could have a clear relation in shot type throughout
most shots in the trailer. I tried to keep everything in center frame apart from when the killer was present as I liked
these shots to be hand held as it felt like the shots were being taken in first person so it would add to the emersion
and feel more like the character was in danger as the camera got closer to them. I think I could’ve improved the
compositions of my trailer if I used more triangular shapes as they often represent danger. Another element I
couldv’e improved is the shot where Nathan is with other people as I think I could’ve directed us into a better
composition where the attention was aimed at Nathan by having him in center frame.
Technical Qualities
I chose to add in a lot of zoom shots into my trailer as a audience tends to
feel more engaged when there is movement in a shot so in shots where
there was no movement from actors or objects I moved the camera so the
viewer would’nt loose interest. I used a similar technique in shots where
Nathan was being chased as the hand held camera gave more movement to
the shots so it felt more intense when he was being chased. If I were to
improve these hand held shots I would’ve used the shoulder mount more
often so that the camera was more steady when we were running as the
chase sequence in the forest was more shakey than I would’ve liked.
For certain sound effects in the trailer I recorded myself sharpening a knife which proved
to be an effective way to cut together the shots to the slicing of the knife. I also went
through several attempt at animating the slides to a beat I made in Garage Band and
although this worked eventually I was unhappy with the beat I made for the symbols
animation as the beat sounded too high pitch and out of place so if I were remaking the
beat for this section I would lower the pitch and add some reverb so it doesn’t sound as
jarring.
As I was editing my trailer I decided to add in stylistic shots of the main
character disapearing so I cropped layers together so that the background
stayed the same as Nathan was cut out of the shot. This did work well however
if I were to remake my trailer I would remove these shots as it would probably
just confuse the viewer into thinking that Nathans character had gone missing
which was not what I intended. I would replace these shot with Nathan
investigating and trying to find clues about the missing people.
Technical QualitiesI began by creating layers of
film grain which I would
change the colour gradient of
in order to make a red and
green colour scheme similar to
my trailer. This worked well as
the background reflected the
aesthetic choices I made for
my trailer so the two felt
linked. If I were to improve the
design I would choose a better
image for the grain as it looks
a little unclear as to what it’s
meant to be.
I used a photo taken of Nathan in the red
light for the focus of the poster. I had to cut
out the image and overlay it ontop of the
background so the red on his face
contrasted with the darker green in the
background. I worked hard on the technical
qualities of making sure the photo had no
remaining bits of the photos original
backround once I edited it.
I think my final design works well from a technical stand point as all the technical qualities
tie into the aesthetic choices I made. I wanted the composition of the poster to look close
as It shows more detail in Nathans expression while giving me more room to add in the
symbol over Nathans face. I think the strong part of my technical aspects was having
Nathan in a close up as I think it shows that I’ve considered what will grab peoples
attention from far away. I had decided to use photos mixed with the graphic design of the
symbol for the poster as it created a surreal effect which linked in with the second half of
the trailer that was made so be less grounded in reality than the first. Improvements I
could make to the technical qualities of my poster would be to make Nathans face more
visable by deceasing the opacity, I could’ve also made the text for the hook line to be
more bold so it would be easier to see from far away.
For a practice design I
worked on learning how I
would overlay an image
ontop of the backgroud to
create a surreal effect and I
thought it looked fairly similar
to the poster for Suspiria so I
decided to use this technique
in my final poster design.
Aesthetic Qualities
My biggest mistake in the aesthetic of my trailer was in the opening shot as
the colour scheme of the posters on the wall was ruined by the one black
and white poster which stood out and disrupted all the effort I put into
colouring the posters, I did’nt realise how badly the poster would effect the
shot until after I had edited it. The misuse of colour in this shot leaves the
viewer unemersed in the fisrt shot as the poster stops them from feeling
intregued by the colour pallet. I could’ve improved the aesthetics of this shot
if I had just used coloured posters or ones in black and white but using both
was a terrible idea. The only reason this one poster was in black and white
was because this was the only usable photo I had of this friend so I couldv’e
asked them to send me a better one in colour and my problem would’ve
been easily solved. I don’t think I achieved the aesthetics I wanted in this
shot however I know where I failed and how I could’ve improved.
One key aesthetic choice I made when editing
my trailer was to use a film grain over the footage
to show that the film was based off 70’s horror
films as the grain gives the trailer a retro quality.
This works well as I gave the grain a warm colour
grading which worked in the trailer as the warmth
of the grade contrasts the distirbing imagery. The
grain worked well in a horror themed trailer as it
gives the sense that the footage is older than it is
while distorting the footage slightly playing on the
idea of paranoia.
I think I could’ve improved the aesthetic of my
grain if I made it more apparent in some shots by
using different types of grains and cutting to
different shots when more obvious grains are
shown however the grain I used worked fine for
introducing the retro style to my trailer.
Aesthetic Qualities
I chose to frame the shot of the draw
opening similarly to the shot of the hook
in suspiria as I belive this is where both
traiilers reveal their most interesting
imagery however I shot mine in hand
held as it added to the sense that the
shot was in first person. Where Suspiria
chose a dull colour scheme I chose to
light this shot with a red light to show
that the wepon would be used for
violence and was clearly dangerous.
My biggest influence was definatly the
original Suspiria which is fairly obvious in
my shots with coloured lighting, I chose
to do this coloured lighting as it showed
that I was aiming for a retro aesthetic
inspired by Dario Argentos work while
also giving the viewer some interesting
visuals to admire. One improvement I
would make to this aesthetic choice
would be to use brighter LED lights in
future as the ones we used while filming
were a bit too dim so the colours did’nt
appear as bright as I would’ve liked.
When I was designing the symbol that would be reoccuring throughout my
trailer and poster I wanted to create something that looked aestheticaly
simple, memorable and intrguing so I began by having three desending
lines and then I put a line through the middle. Rather than give a meaning
to the symbol I thought that it would be more interesting if the symbol was
representative of the mystery in my trailer as the lack of explanation
makes the viewer want to know what this symbol means and why it’s so
prevalant in the marketing. I gave the symbol a grainy look in it’s
animation slide as I felt that it made the sybol look ancient and the way it
looked decayed gave it a creepy aesthetic.
Aesthetic Qualities
I got the idea for the static at the end of the
trailer from the anime Serial Experiments
Lain as the static in that show represents the
main character being a part of the internet I
wanted the static in my trailer to further
develop the retro aesthetic of my trailer as
the static can be asociated with tv static
which is hardly something asociated with
modern television. I put a video underneath
the static and put a red filter on the video so
that the viewer could hardly see what was
underneath the static. I did this to create a
sense of paranoia as the viewer can only
barely see what is happening therefore their
imagination fills in what they cannot see in
the shot.
I based the flickering of the red and green symbol
off of the clips I’d seen from Enter The Void as the
flickering shots gave me a sense that it was meant
to be panic inducing and unnearving so I took this
idea and used it in my trailer as I wanted to get a
physical reaction out of the viewer in this shot as
the flashes make the shot difficult to adjust your
eyes to. The use of red and green also ties into the
colour palette I was using in my trailer. I think I
could’ve improved this shot if I sped up the
flickering and if I had only used the one page of
my note book in the shot . The shot served as a
transition from the realistic to the sureal as the
appearance of the symbol brings in the coloured
I chose a red and green colour palette for the film as I thought that this contrast
worked well as the red stood out from the green so that the viewer could immedietly
tell what they were meant to be focusing on as it would be red. The one issue I had
was when some shots did’nt have enough of either colour such as the shot where
Nathan is talking to his friends, the room has no red in it so the whole shot stands
out as it is to visually distant from the rest of the trailer. The colour scheme does
work in most shots though and the red and green aesthetic makes shots in the
forest especially easy to follow as the trees contrast both the blood and Nathans
red shirt
Aesthetic Qualities
I think that the strengths of the asthetic qualities in
my poster come from my colour scheme, like the
Suspiria poster I chose an apparent colour scheme
in my poster as the reds and greens linked to my
colour scheme in my trailer. The red light against
Nathans face is mysterious as the viewer doesn’t
know the source which could create intregue
however the main purpose of the light was to link the
poster to the trailer through the use of coloured
lighting. The grain in the backround is also a way to
tie together the trailer and the poster however it also
gives off a retro aesthetic because of this. The
symbol overlayed onto Nathans face creates a sense
of horror as it warps the colours making his eyes
bright red which creates a cool aesthetic effect due
to the vivid colour it brings out in his face, the symbol
also connects the poster to the trailer so it’s clear to
see that in my thought process I wanted there to be
clear links between the two products. The highlight of
Nathans eyes connects it to the Suspiria posters use
of eyes in relation to mistrust and paranoia that I
researched in existing products that influenced me.
Although the font choice is bold and eye-catching it
doesn’t have any correlation to the theme of horror
so if I were to improve the poster I would use a font
that shows these themes more clearly and relates to
fonts used in horror poster in the 70’s time period.
I missed out the release date on the poster which
lowers its believabilty as I would need to show when
the film is being released to actually draw in an
audience to watch the film, I also could’ve made the
Final Poster Design
What I liked
Every aspect of the design had
consideration of how it would fit into
the overall aesthetic of my project
such as the grain, the symbol design,
the lighting and the colour pallet.
The symbol creates a red glow in
Nathans eyes which makes the
viewer question the prostagonist and
what impact the symbol could have in
the story.
The overlay of Nathans faceonto the
background gives the poster a 70’s
vibe as he almost looks painted on. I
like this as it’s a style thats not seen
often in cover/poster designs
recently.
The vibrant colours reflect the trailers
second half which makes the poster
look surreal and nightmarish.
I did a good job removing the bright
light from Nathans hair which makes
the poster look much cleaner.
What could be improved
I think the title font could benefit from
looking more suited to the horror theme,
still bieng bold and large but having sharp
edges to reflect the slasher genre rather
that looking like it has a grain so it looks
more retro. I think that I couldv’e chose
more fonts in my pre production stage so I
had more font’s to test out while making
my poster however I did’nt want to waste
time searching again so I just used a font
that I alsready had. I think that if I had the
right font it could elevate my poster to the
next level stylisticly.
I could’ve made the font for the hook line
larger so people can see it from far away,
this would be important as the whole goal
of a poster is to attract attention.
I could’ve improved the poster by
including a release date as the purpose of
a poster is to make people watch your film
when it comes out but I doubt many
people would do this if theres no release
date on the poster.
Final Trailer What I liked
I think the retro aesthetic of both the music and the visuals
worked well with the fairly simple yet surreal concept I had for
the product and the influences from 70’s giallo horror films is
definitely visable through the use of lighting and film grain.
The gore turned out pretty well and lent itself to the red and
green colour scheme that I was aiming for.
I was happy with the colour graiding I did, it was just subtle
enough to be visable but it wasn’t distracting, although it is
made from cold colours and therefore not resembling a typical
horror film my intention was to create a colour grade that
looked fairly proffesional compared to my previous work where
the colour grade was off putting and poorly executed.
I really loved the music that I made for my trailer, I think it really
suits the atmospheric surreal tone I wanted in my trailer and the
bass in the background successfully created the tension I
envisioned.
I think while filming we did a good job of setting up the lighting
because the colours turned out great and I think these shots
really made my trailer more visually interesting.
I also liked the animation slides I made for the release date and
title as it was timed well to the music and the grain on top of it
further displayed the retro style of the trailer.
What I did’nt like and could be improved
I thought there were too many shot of Nathan walking around
everywhere and I could’ve filmed shot of him investigating the
disapearances to replace these.
I had two shots of nathan being chased in the trailer which feels
very repetitive.
I could’ve made the blood more red so it was more obviously blood
this could’ve been done with a red filter or adding red paint to the
fake blood.
There was one black and white missing poster in the first shot
which kind of ruined the composition.
There could’ve been more shots of Nathan with other people so it
was more obvious that he wasn’t the only person in danger.
I needed to increase the sound of the voice over so that the
viewers could hear it better.
I think there were too many shots of blood that the gore lost it’s
impact so I also could’ve filmed more shots of nathan investigating
so that there was more variation in the second half.
Audience Appeal
My target audience for my products was for a age range of 16-22 years old as during my research I found that people in this
age group were the most likely to go and watch horror films in the surveys and data that I had looked at. I think that the
most likely audience the film would get would be for people from lower middle class/skilled working class backgrounds (c1
and c2 in terms of NRS social grades). I aimed my product at the emulator type in pyschographics as the emulator seeks
approval from their peers watching the latest film would appeal to them as it would be something to talk about with others so
that they stay knowledgable of other peoples opinions about the film. In geodemographics my product would appeal to the
social intergrater who would want to watch the film so that they can share theirs views on it with other people for
conversation, the film would also appeal to those seeking to be entertained as horror films often work as a catharsis for
issues we have in daily life so engaging in this would be appealing for this group.
I do think I appealed to my target audience with my trailer as the gore showed that the film would’nt be suitible for those
aged bellow my target audience and I think the tension and retro visuals in my trailer are intreguing enough to be engaing
for a modern audience in this age range as the vivid lighting and grainy look could feel new and interesting to them.
I tried to appeal to both a male and female audience however I think that the fact that I only had male actor in the trailer
could be off putting to a female audience espescially seen as though most protagonists in horror films are female, with this
in mind I think that I could’ve included a female character into the trailer so that it showed there would be more diversity.
I think that the only audience I really thought about while creating my trailer were for the age group I had in mind and fans of
horror these were the two groups that were most likely to watch my trailer however I think that In retrospect there were
things that I could do to widen my aundience such as adding in a female character would’ve broadend my audience.
Overall I think I did appeal to my target audience as the influences in my work a clear and show that I was aiming for a
specific style. I think that by setting up various mysterys in the trailer such as who the killer is, where the victims are and
what the symbol means are enough to intregue an audience outside of the age range that I targeted and the blood show
that there will be some excitement in the film which would appeal to people with short attention spans as they know that
they’ll be action in the film at some point. The trailer looks visually impressive and definatly shows the retro horror style I
wanted so I believe that it would appeal to fans of horror as well as my initial target audience. If I were to add to my trailer I
would make it more inclusive overall as I think horror films should be for everyone in the age demographic I set.

Feedback
Feedback 1
What did you like about the product? (Trailer)
• Really good custom soundtrack – The latter half of the trailer including the distorted sound that resembled someone saying
“Go!” added to the overall theme of paranoia that the trailer is going for
• Incredible visuals that were well shot with good composition, everything was well in focus and looked excellent, transitions
were mostly seamless and none were at all jarring
• Graphics transition being in time with the music was very creative and well produced
• Meaning constructed for the audience translates well, the use of red to represent blood & danger in different aspects was
good and the use of a harsh green to contrast it that represents the sickening feeling of nausea is also well conveyed
(Poster)
• Excellent use of lighting, casting the actor in shadow adds to the horror genre aspect
• The 3 inverted rectangles cast over the eyes better ties the poster to the film itself
• The grain cast over the image adds to the theming of “missing persons” prevalent in the film, it’s inclusion works well and
looks great on the poster as well.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
• Beginning audio in the trailer is a little quiet
• Experiment with some filters on other scenes – try create a more consistent
colour theme to further stylise the trailer/film
• The font choice for the poster could be changed to something a little more
creative/unique
Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– I think this product is really amazing and stunning with great visuals and
sound effects that make this product stand out from the crowed.
– There is a lot of the cinematography used in this video trailer and I think
its utterly impressive compared to my own work.
– I think think the poster is also visually impressive with a lot of great effects
being implemented giving this product a retro 80s vibe.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• The only thing I can think about is the sound quality, the music and
sound effects are perfect, but the monologue audio could be
improved with a better microphone.
Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– Visuals are really impressive, the music is incredible and your sound
effects really contribute to the direction your story is taking
– Your poster looks really good, very professional and I really like some
of the effects you’ve done, I’m getting a retro video game sort of vibe
from it.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
– I feel sometimes I was struggling to make out what the voiceover was
trying to portray and there's moments where there's an audible intake
of breath before the talking begins.
– I noticed that bottom left poster is black and white and the rest are in
colour, Id definitely consider making them all coloured or putting a
black and white effect over all of them
Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
• I do definitely need to sort some issues with the sound quality of my video as the monologue in particular
is pretty quiet so I need to boost the sound on that track so it’s distinguishable from the music.
• One of the problems with a shot in the trailer was that one of the posters was in black and white which
was something that I included to show that the poster was older than the the others but in retrospect the
poster did ruin the colour scheme of that shot as it stands out too much from the other posters.
• I felt really happy when looking back over the feedback because I realised that all the effort I’d gone
through with the stylisation of the surreal, retro aesthetic had paid off as it was one of the main focuses
mentioned in what the audience liked however I also agree that there is more I can do to put emphasis on
this theme in my trailer.
• I agree that a problem with my poster was the title font as it doesn’t really suit the tone I was trying to set
with the rest of the design
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
• I don’t think that I should add any more filters or surreal effects as although this would make the colour
scheme more consistent it would also take a lot of time especially as I hadn’t practiced this in planning so
although this would be really effective it would also put me at at really high risk of not finishing my project.
• I do think that some of my transitions were jarring but these are changes I can make fairly quickly in
editing.
Peer Feedback Summary
• I need to improve my trailer by adjusting the volume of my opening monologue
voice over, making it louder and more clear to the viewer as at the moment it
sounds muffled by the music. I can do this by increasing the sound in this track in
premiere or using adobe audition to make the track louder. I just want the viewers
to be able to listen to the trailer without having to strain to make out what’s being
said so making the voiceover louder would help me achieve this easily.
• I think that I could do with changing the title font for my poster design especially
after the feedback I got as I think the font looks a bit too cartoon like at the
moment and although the slice marks make it fit the horror theme, I don’t think it
looks good compared to the rest of the poster. I’d just need to use a font that’s just
as bold as the previous fonts I’ve tested but I need one that’s more suited to the
grainy retro style of my poster.
• In the feedback someone thought that the transitions weren’t jarring however I
thought that this is an aspect of my work that needs improving as some shots
weren’t cut to the beat so this will be something that I will spend a short amount
of time doing just so I can make trailer a bit more smooth overall.

5. evaluation(1)(3)

  • 3. Secondary Research • When I was researching my for my trailer and poster designs the films that stood out to me the most for their trailers were Suspiria (2018) and Us and I think that the main strength of my research into these two film trailers was that I chose them because they were great examples of two different types of trailers, Suspiria being tension building, surreal and atmospheric, and Us being inventive and action packed. I explained in a lot of detail what made these great trailers that are compelling to watch and how the trailers play on and explore tropes in horror to create something familiar yet fresh. I also explained how Junji Ito’s work had an impact on my trailer concept when I was researching and although Uzumaki is a completely different type of media to my trailer I still took inspiration from the way Junji Ito incorporates surreal themes into the horror of his manga through both body horror and experimental horror, I mainly put my inspiration from this into the second half of my trailer as I tried to make a gory nightmarish sequence. • I think the main problem with the research I did into my research of existing products is that I looked too much into what the products did right rather than what things they did that were wrong such as the trailers being a bit spoiler heavy or how it would be difficult to translate the same fear from a Junji Ito manga into a trailer as he normally focuses on otherworldly creatures so if I were to improve my existing product research I would write more about how I could learn from the weaker points of these existing products as I know this would've helped me to develop my final product. I think that I also could’ve improved the research I did into poster designs and front covers if I had looked at different products as I only looked at the poster/cover designs for the existing products I looked at for my trailer, I think that I would have more to talk about if I looked at a better variety of posters so I could talk about more. Another issue I have with my research into existing products is that I hardly spoke about the technical achievements in the products which meant that I had less of a fully developed idea about this area when working on my own technical qualities in both my trailer and poster design • Overall I think I put a lot of detail into analyzing the aesthetic choices made in the existing products which gave me a better understanding of how I wanted my own trailer to look as well as influencing aesthetic choices I made in both my trailer and poster although if I put some more research into the technical qualities of these products then it would’ve given me more to look for when making my own descisions on tech
  • 4. Primary Research Survey • Strengths • The main strength of my survey was that I tried to cover all the questions I needed from a larger audience such as what they wanted in a horror film and what they didn’t want. I think that by asking straight forward questions like this was great for my research because it let me have a better understanding of what would and wouldn’t work in my trailer. • After learning that my audience didn’t want to see bad acting in my trailer I immediately began thinking of ways to make my trailer look exciting/intriguing without needing lots of acting as I knew that the actor I chose wasn’t very experienced, due to the survey I decided to give this character only a small amount of dialogue that wouldn't need to be lip-synced so that Nathan didn’t have to go through several re shoots and I could edit the trailer easier. Because of this decision I think I saved myself a lot of time filming and probably increased the quality of my trailer. • I didn't need to ask the age of the people taking my survey as I only sent the survey to people in the age of my target audience which meant I was getting answers that the audience I aimed for were giving so the replies were definitely what appeals to my audience. • Weaknesses • The main weakness of my survey was that I didn't ask enough questions to be able to have a clear understanding of what the audience wanted from my film. I only got to know the certain themes that they like where I could’ve learnt the gender of the protagonist they would like to see and what settings appeal to them. I think that if I also asked more people I’d also have a much better understanding on how a wider audience would think. • I asked some questions such as when they liked to watch horror films and who with which in retrospect were pretty useless, if I asked when they wanted the films to be set or what type of killer they wanted then I would definitely have a clearer view of what my audience wanted from my trailer.
  • 5. Primary Research Interviews • Strengths • In my interviews I only interviewed people from my target audience (16-22 years old) as I wanted to know what has influenced their taste in horror films and how they felt about ideas and themes that I wanted to show in my trailer. • All of the interviewees preferred realism to the surreal/supernatural so I made the main focus of my trailer the serial killer so that the target audience would be satisfied that the villain of the film is grounded in reality and because I still really wanted surreal elements in my trailer I decided to put these elements into aesthetic choices such as the co loured lighting and the film grain which makes the trailer look distorted and give it a style that stands out and I think that this was the right decision to make as it would leave the viewer happy and intrigued while letting me make the creative decisions I wanted to. • After learning that my target audience likes poster designs that are simple and recognizable I tried making my front cover more simple by including the symbol I used in the trailers, this thought that stemmed from my interview meant that the two products were visually linked while the simple design of the symbol fit the description for what the audience would look for in a poster design • I used daytime shots in my trailer after asking my audience if they would be fine seeing that in a horror film and their response help me decide to have gore in my trailer as the response was that daytime horror is good as long as it contrasts with the setting so that’s exactly what I planned to do by having shots of blood in the daytime. • Weaknesses • I think I could’ve asked more questions about what my audience would like to see in a horror film rather than making guesses off of what they have already seen as it would give me a better understanding of what I could’ve included to appeal to them. • I think that if I had interviewed a few more people rather than just three then I could’ve gotten more varied responses or learnt that all the responses were fairly similar so that I would have a much better grasp on the current expectations of a horror film in the target audience I chose •
  • 6. Subject Research • For my subject research I looked into the infamous serial killer Ted Bundy, a website on how the police investigate missing persons cases, and an article on mass paranoia throughout history. I put research into these three subjects as I wanted to have a better understanding of the themes in my product (paranoia, missing people, and killers). • Strengths: • I think my research into Ted Bundy was the most interesting as it confirmed the research I had done that what makes a killer scary to my target audience is how a killer can blend into society which is exactly what Ted Bundy did, I think that the fear of serial killers must’ve been highly influenced by Ted Bundy’s actions so when I researched him I made sure to point out the similarities in his crimes and the points my target audience made in the interviews about what made killer scary. • I put a lot of detail into what makes paranoia such a terrifying concept and focused mainly on cases of paranoia that caused deaths, murders and public hysteria. I explained that I took an interest in paranoia as it was an area of physiological horror I hadn’t seen explored often so learning how there are still cases of mass paranoia that have happened in the last few years is actually pretty frightening once you learn that a simple prank video with people dressed up as clowns can be popularized and twisted by social media to a point where real murders were commit by people dressing as clowns and this is all because of the social fear that can be created by a community turning on itself so I wanted to give a sense in my trailer that this was the direction that my film would be heading. • Weaknesses • I think the main weakness in my research into paranoia was that I hadn’t spoken about how I could actually use the paranoia in my trailer. The only shots in my trailer where paranoia was prevalent were the shots of the missing poster, the description slide and the shot of Nathan looking across the water and I think this is a shame as there were so many way that I could’ve explored the theme of paranoia but because I hadn’t listed some thoughts about how I could convey a visual sense of paranoia the theme ended up being pushed into the background. • I think that my research into how police handle missing persons cases could’ve be replaced by research into a better subject as I never ended up using any of the information I had learnt and if I had put research into something that was more practical such as a video or article on how trailers are made and what makes a trailer the most exciting.
  • 7. Research Experiments Stregths I think my production experiments worked well because I really wanted to practice these techniques in preperation for my trailer, I knew that if I didn’t then it would damage the overall appeal of my trailer. Testing the differences in movement from the shoulder rig to the steadicam really help me choose to film with the shoulder rig for the first person shots as it was smoother and more efficient to set up and this decision would only have been made if I had compared them the way I did by analysing the quality of both clips taken and then assesing how quick it was to get both ready. I think that learning how to grade my trailer properly in the experiments saved me a lot of issues later in production and helped me to quickly and effectively grade my footage without making any of the colour stand out too much like in my music video so learning this helped me grade my trailer to a subtle level I did’nt think I could. Learning how to propely implement film grain into my footage meant that I could give my footage the retro look that I wanted so that my trailer could look similar in quality to a 70’s giallo horror film. Although I struggled at first to ovelay the grain I soon learnt that if I gave the grain a colour grade then it not only apllied the grade to the footage but it made the grain appear more visable while making the footage look older. These techniques were crucial for my work in my trailer as they were some of the key aesthetic choices I used and really brought the daytime shots to life. Weaknesses I think that I could’ve graided the same piece of footage in several ways so that I could learn more about graiding techniques, this would’ve helped give my trailer a look more reminiscent of typical horror films I think that I couldv’e shown experiments in lighting design in preperation for the coloured lighting we used in the trailer as we hadn’t practiced setting up lighting it took us a long time to get ready for the shots where we used this lighting.
  • 8. Planning- Pre Production  I think that in my planning I worked well when I was making decisions on how I could incorporate my influences into the aesthetic of my production through aspects such as red and green colour schemes and how I planned to use vivid colours in the lighting of some shots, I also gave detail on what influenced my decisions in my poster design which helped me get a better understanding of what exactly I was trying to create aesthetic wise in my poster. I feel like in the sections of my planning where I talked about the creative process in aesthetic, costume design and prop choice were where I succeeded mainly due to how I explained why I made each decision but I think the area of planning that helped me the most during my production was my thoughts on how I would make my music in Garage Band as it genuinely helped me as a guide for the synth instruments I would use and what influenced me to use these in my final piece of music, the reason it helped so much was because I had no prior knowledge of how to use Garage Band if I didn’t plan for this then I think that I would’ve failed at making my own music and I would’ve used pre existing music which would've greatly weakened the effect I wanted the music in my trailer to have, the music I made had the purpose of making the viewer feel an increase in tension and to give a sense of paranoia and that wouldn't exist in my trailer if I used different music. • I think that the weakest section of my pre production was my schedule as I made it fairly quickly without thinking of other factors in my life such as when I have work and what the weather would be like for filming so because I had work on the weekend I had to film I had to complete my schedule in reverse where I was meant to be making my trailer I was making my poster and music in the first week and then I worked on the trailer for the next two weeks and made improvements in the last week. The mistakes I made while making the production schedule impacted the whole of my production as it threw off my time management. I think that another aspect of my pre production that I could’ve improved was how I talked about my influences from existing products as I still only focused on what aspects of existing work I thought was good rather than talking about what I thought were weaknesses in the products and how I could learn from this and improve the faults in existing products for my own work.
  • 9. Time Management • I think that my weakest area of my production was my how I managed my time, the main mistake I made that caused me to have worse time management than I wanted was that I didn't think of outside factors while planning my production schedule during pre production, this meant that I had to film a week later than I wanted to because I had to work on the weekend I was meant to film so I left myself less time to edit my trailer so certain aspects of my trailer such as the dialogue sound quieter than it should because I was too busy focusing on the visuals of the trailer that the dialogue became an after thought because of all the work I was trying to get done. This mistake with my schedule meant I was constantly having to improvise my time management when I could’ve had a smooth work schedule. • I think that because I did manage to finish in time to a point where I was happy with what I’d made it showed that I made the right choices when I was trying to make my trailer in time, although it would’ve helped me a lot to film my trailer in the first week I think it actual helped me a lot to have the first week to design my poster and make the music for my trailer as it allowed me to edit my trailer around the music so editing the trailer was made slightly easier for me. I found the time limit pretty stressful however I think that I managed my time fairly well after the mistakes I made with my schedule as I quickly decided to spend the first week making preparations to my trailer so I would be fully ready to edit and I think this decision was the only reason I managed to finish on time because instead of doing nothing in the first week I spent my time wisely by developing the music and poster designs.
  • 10. Technical Qualities I tried basing my music off of the soundtrack to Hereditary as I remembered that the music in that film made me feel an extreme sense of tension so after listening to the sound track I began working on my music in GarageBand trying to use a similar base sound that increased in the background to try and give a then same intensity to the music and it surprisingly worked fairly well. I tried to give the music a creepy retro vibe by using lots of synth sounds in subtle ways and although this worked it also felt fairly messy at some points where I would’ve liked it to sound clean, this didn’t take away from the horror of the music but for me it could’ve improved by taking away some of the instruments to make it feel less full. I think that one of the reasons the Hereditary soundtrack worked so well was because the sound track knew that less was more so the subtle use of instruments was what added to the tension that was being built by the bass. I wanted to make the slides introducing things such as the symbol, the director, the title and the release date to feel significant in my trailer so they didn’t just fill time but I wanted them to stand out. I think that I successfully made these slides stand out by animating them so that the words appeared one by one, this helped me time the slides to the music. I thought that the only way that I could improve my slides was if I put the text on top of a moving background however I think that this could’ve been too much information to take in at once. I think that the slide defiantly look retro especially due to the grain that I gave to it. When I was thinking about the compositions I wanted in my trailer I thought mainly about how shapes would play a role in my trailer and how I could use the natural rectangular shapes in the compositions of alleys, tree lines and walkways, I knew that by framing these rectangular shapes I could have a clear relation in shot type throughout most shots in the trailer. I tried to keep everything in center frame apart from when the killer was present as I liked these shots to be hand held as it felt like the shots were being taken in first person so it would add to the emersion and feel more like the character was in danger as the camera got closer to them. I think I could’ve improved the compositions of my trailer if I used more triangular shapes as they often represent danger. Another element I couldv’e improved is the shot where Nathan is with other people as I think I could’ve directed us into a better composition where the attention was aimed at Nathan by having him in center frame.
  • 11. Technical Qualities I chose to add in a lot of zoom shots into my trailer as a audience tends to feel more engaged when there is movement in a shot so in shots where there was no movement from actors or objects I moved the camera so the viewer would’nt loose interest. I used a similar technique in shots where Nathan was being chased as the hand held camera gave more movement to the shots so it felt more intense when he was being chased. If I were to improve these hand held shots I would’ve used the shoulder mount more often so that the camera was more steady when we were running as the chase sequence in the forest was more shakey than I would’ve liked. For certain sound effects in the trailer I recorded myself sharpening a knife which proved to be an effective way to cut together the shots to the slicing of the knife. I also went through several attempt at animating the slides to a beat I made in Garage Band and although this worked eventually I was unhappy with the beat I made for the symbols animation as the beat sounded too high pitch and out of place so if I were remaking the beat for this section I would lower the pitch and add some reverb so it doesn’t sound as jarring. As I was editing my trailer I decided to add in stylistic shots of the main character disapearing so I cropped layers together so that the background stayed the same as Nathan was cut out of the shot. This did work well however if I were to remake my trailer I would remove these shots as it would probably just confuse the viewer into thinking that Nathans character had gone missing which was not what I intended. I would replace these shot with Nathan investigating and trying to find clues about the missing people.
  • 12. Technical QualitiesI began by creating layers of film grain which I would change the colour gradient of in order to make a red and green colour scheme similar to my trailer. This worked well as the background reflected the aesthetic choices I made for my trailer so the two felt linked. If I were to improve the design I would choose a better image for the grain as it looks a little unclear as to what it’s meant to be. I used a photo taken of Nathan in the red light for the focus of the poster. I had to cut out the image and overlay it ontop of the background so the red on his face contrasted with the darker green in the background. I worked hard on the technical qualities of making sure the photo had no remaining bits of the photos original backround once I edited it. I think my final design works well from a technical stand point as all the technical qualities tie into the aesthetic choices I made. I wanted the composition of the poster to look close as It shows more detail in Nathans expression while giving me more room to add in the symbol over Nathans face. I think the strong part of my technical aspects was having Nathan in a close up as I think it shows that I’ve considered what will grab peoples attention from far away. I had decided to use photos mixed with the graphic design of the symbol for the poster as it created a surreal effect which linked in with the second half of the trailer that was made so be less grounded in reality than the first. Improvements I could make to the technical qualities of my poster would be to make Nathans face more visable by deceasing the opacity, I could’ve also made the text for the hook line to be more bold so it would be easier to see from far away. For a practice design I worked on learning how I would overlay an image ontop of the backgroud to create a surreal effect and I thought it looked fairly similar to the poster for Suspiria so I decided to use this technique in my final poster design.
  • 13. Aesthetic Qualities My biggest mistake in the aesthetic of my trailer was in the opening shot as the colour scheme of the posters on the wall was ruined by the one black and white poster which stood out and disrupted all the effort I put into colouring the posters, I did’nt realise how badly the poster would effect the shot until after I had edited it. The misuse of colour in this shot leaves the viewer unemersed in the fisrt shot as the poster stops them from feeling intregued by the colour pallet. I could’ve improved the aesthetics of this shot if I had just used coloured posters or ones in black and white but using both was a terrible idea. The only reason this one poster was in black and white was because this was the only usable photo I had of this friend so I couldv’e asked them to send me a better one in colour and my problem would’ve been easily solved. I don’t think I achieved the aesthetics I wanted in this shot however I know where I failed and how I could’ve improved. One key aesthetic choice I made when editing my trailer was to use a film grain over the footage to show that the film was based off 70’s horror films as the grain gives the trailer a retro quality. This works well as I gave the grain a warm colour grading which worked in the trailer as the warmth of the grade contrasts the distirbing imagery. The grain worked well in a horror themed trailer as it gives the sense that the footage is older than it is while distorting the footage slightly playing on the idea of paranoia. I think I could’ve improved the aesthetic of my grain if I made it more apparent in some shots by using different types of grains and cutting to different shots when more obvious grains are shown however the grain I used worked fine for introducing the retro style to my trailer.
  • 14. Aesthetic Qualities I chose to frame the shot of the draw opening similarly to the shot of the hook in suspiria as I belive this is where both traiilers reveal their most interesting imagery however I shot mine in hand held as it added to the sense that the shot was in first person. Where Suspiria chose a dull colour scheme I chose to light this shot with a red light to show that the wepon would be used for violence and was clearly dangerous. My biggest influence was definatly the original Suspiria which is fairly obvious in my shots with coloured lighting, I chose to do this coloured lighting as it showed that I was aiming for a retro aesthetic inspired by Dario Argentos work while also giving the viewer some interesting visuals to admire. One improvement I would make to this aesthetic choice would be to use brighter LED lights in future as the ones we used while filming were a bit too dim so the colours did’nt appear as bright as I would’ve liked. When I was designing the symbol that would be reoccuring throughout my trailer and poster I wanted to create something that looked aestheticaly simple, memorable and intrguing so I began by having three desending lines and then I put a line through the middle. Rather than give a meaning to the symbol I thought that it would be more interesting if the symbol was representative of the mystery in my trailer as the lack of explanation makes the viewer want to know what this symbol means and why it’s so prevalant in the marketing. I gave the symbol a grainy look in it’s animation slide as I felt that it made the sybol look ancient and the way it looked decayed gave it a creepy aesthetic.
  • 15. Aesthetic Qualities I got the idea for the static at the end of the trailer from the anime Serial Experiments Lain as the static in that show represents the main character being a part of the internet I wanted the static in my trailer to further develop the retro aesthetic of my trailer as the static can be asociated with tv static which is hardly something asociated with modern television. I put a video underneath the static and put a red filter on the video so that the viewer could hardly see what was underneath the static. I did this to create a sense of paranoia as the viewer can only barely see what is happening therefore their imagination fills in what they cannot see in the shot. I based the flickering of the red and green symbol off of the clips I’d seen from Enter The Void as the flickering shots gave me a sense that it was meant to be panic inducing and unnearving so I took this idea and used it in my trailer as I wanted to get a physical reaction out of the viewer in this shot as the flashes make the shot difficult to adjust your eyes to. The use of red and green also ties into the colour palette I was using in my trailer. I think I could’ve improved this shot if I sped up the flickering and if I had only used the one page of my note book in the shot . The shot served as a transition from the realistic to the sureal as the appearance of the symbol brings in the coloured I chose a red and green colour palette for the film as I thought that this contrast worked well as the red stood out from the green so that the viewer could immedietly tell what they were meant to be focusing on as it would be red. The one issue I had was when some shots did’nt have enough of either colour such as the shot where Nathan is talking to his friends, the room has no red in it so the whole shot stands out as it is to visually distant from the rest of the trailer. The colour scheme does work in most shots though and the red and green aesthetic makes shots in the forest especially easy to follow as the trees contrast both the blood and Nathans red shirt
  • 16. Aesthetic Qualities I think that the strengths of the asthetic qualities in my poster come from my colour scheme, like the Suspiria poster I chose an apparent colour scheme in my poster as the reds and greens linked to my colour scheme in my trailer. The red light against Nathans face is mysterious as the viewer doesn’t know the source which could create intregue however the main purpose of the light was to link the poster to the trailer through the use of coloured lighting. The grain in the backround is also a way to tie together the trailer and the poster however it also gives off a retro aesthetic because of this. The symbol overlayed onto Nathans face creates a sense of horror as it warps the colours making his eyes bright red which creates a cool aesthetic effect due to the vivid colour it brings out in his face, the symbol also connects the poster to the trailer so it’s clear to see that in my thought process I wanted there to be clear links between the two products. The highlight of Nathans eyes connects it to the Suspiria posters use of eyes in relation to mistrust and paranoia that I researched in existing products that influenced me. Although the font choice is bold and eye-catching it doesn’t have any correlation to the theme of horror so if I were to improve the poster I would use a font that shows these themes more clearly and relates to fonts used in horror poster in the 70’s time period. I missed out the release date on the poster which lowers its believabilty as I would need to show when the film is being released to actually draw in an audience to watch the film, I also could’ve made the
  • 17. Final Poster Design What I liked Every aspect of the design had consideration of how it would fit into the overall aesthetic of my project such as the grain, the symbol design, the lighting and the colour pallet. The symbol creates a red glow in Nathans eyes which makes the viewer question the prostagonist and what impact the symbol could have in the story. The overlay of Nathans faceonto the background gives the poster a 70’s vibe as he almost looks painted on. I like this as it’s a style thats not seen often in cover/poster designs recently. The vibrant colours reflect the trailers second half which makes the poster look surreal and nightmarish. I did a good job removing the bright light from Nathans hair which makes the poster look much cleaner. What could be improved I think the title font could benefit from looking more suited to the horror theme, still bieng bold and large but having sharp edges to reflect the slasher genre rather that looking like it has a grain so it looks more retro. I think that I couldv’e chose more fonts in my pre production stage so I had more font’s to test out while making my poster however I did’nt want to waste time searching again so I just used a font that I alsready had. I think that if I had the right font it could elevate my poster to the next level stylisticly. I could’ve made the font for the hook line larger so people can see it from far away, this would be important as the whole goal of a poster is to attract attention. I could’ve improved the poster by including a release date as the purpose of a poster is to make people watch your film when it comes out but I doubt many people would do this if theres no release date on the poster.
  • 18. Final Trailer What I liked I think the retro aesthetic of both the music and the visuals worked well with the fairly simple yet surreal concept I had for the product and the influences from 70’s giallo horror films is definitely visable through the use of lighting and film grain. The gore turned out pretty well and lent itself to the red and green colour scheme that I was aiming for. I was happy with the colour graiding I did, it was just subtle enough to be visable but it wasn’t distracting, although it is made from cold colours and therefore not resembling a typical horror film my intention was to create a colour grade that looked fairly proffesional compared to my previous work where the colour grade was off putting and poorly executed. I really loved the music that I made for my trailer, I think it really suits the atmospheric surreal tone I wanted in my trailer and the bass in the background successfully created the tension I envisioned. I think while filming we did a good job of setting up the lighting because the colours turned out great and I think these shots really made my trailer more visually interesting. I also liked the animation slides I made for the release date and title as it was timed well to the music and the grain on top of it further displayed the retro style of the trailer. What I did’nt like and could be improved I thought there were too many shot of Nathan walking around everywhere and I could’ve filmed shot of him investigating the disapearances to replace these. I had two shots of nathan being chased in the trailer which feels very repetitive. I could’ve made the blood more red so it was more obviously blood this could’ve been done with a red filter or adding red paint to the fake blood. There was one black and white missing poster in the first shot which kind of ruined the composition. There could’ve been more shots of Nathan with other people so it was more obvious that he wasn’t the only person in danger. I needed to increase the sound of the voice over so that the viewers could hear it better. I think there were too many shots of blood that the gore lost it’s impact so I also could’ve filmed more shots of nathan investigating so that there was more variation in the second half.
  • 19. Audience Appeal My target audience for my products was for a age range of 16-22 years old as during my research I found that people in this age group were the most likely to go and watch horror films in the surveys and data that I had looked at. I think that the most likely audience the film would get would be for people from lower middle class/skilled working class backgrounds (c1 and c2 in terms of NRS social grades). I aimed my product at the emulator type in pyschographics as the emulator seeks approval from their peers watching the latest film would appeal to them as it would be something to talk about with others so that they stay knowledgable of other peoples opinions about the film. In geodemographics my product would appeal to the social intergrater who would want to watch the film so that they can share theirs views on it with other people for conversation, the film would also appeal to those seeking to be entertained as horror films often work as a catharsis for issues we have in daily life so engaging in this would be appealing for this group. I do think I appealed to my target audience with my trailer as the gore showed that the film would’nt be suitible for those aged bellow my target audience and I think the tension and retro visuals in my trailer are intreguing enough to be engaing for a modern audience in this age range as the vivid lighting and grainy look could feel new and interesting to them. I tried to appeal to both a male and female audience however I think that the fact that I only had male actor in the trailer could be off putting to a female audience espescially seen as though most protagonists in horror films are female, with this in mind I think that I could’ve included a female character into the trailer so that it showed there would be more diversity. I think that the only audience I really thought about while creating my trailer were for the age group I had in mind and fans of horror these were the two groups that were most likely to watch my trailer however I think that In retrospect there were things that I could do to widen my aundience such as adding in a female character would’ve broadend my audience. Overall I think I did appeal to my target audience as the influences in my work a clear and show that I was aiming for a specific style. I think that by setting up various mysterys in the trailer such as who the killer is, where the victims are and what the symbol means are enough to intregue an audience outside of the age range that I targeted and the blood show that there will be some excitement in the film which would appeal to people with short attention spans as they know that they’ll be action in the film at some point. The trailer looks visually impressive and definatly shows the retro horror style I wanted so I believe that it would appeal to fans of horror as well as my initial target audience. If I were to add to my trailer I would make it more inclusive overall as I think horror films should be for everyone in the age demographic I set.
  • 21. Feedback 1 What did you like about the product? (Trailer) • Really good custom soundtrack – The latter half of the trailer including the distorted sound that resembled someone saying “Go!” added to the overall theme of paranoia that the trailer is going for • Incredible visuals that were well shot with good composition, everything was well in focus and looked excellent, transitions were mostly seamless and none were at all jarring • Graphics transition being in time with the music was very creative and well produced • Meaning constructed for the audience translates well, the use of red to represent blood & danger in different aspects was good and the use of a harsh green to contrast it that represents the sickening feeling of nausea is also well conveyed (Poster) • Excellent use of lighting, casting the actor in shadow adds to the horror genre aspect • The 3 inverted rectangles cast over the eyes better ties the poster to the film itself • The grain cast over the image adds to the theming of “missing persons” prevalent in the film, it’s inclusion works well and looks great on the poster as well. What improvements could have been made to the product? • Beginning audio in the trailer is a little quiet • Experiment with some filters on other scenes – try create a more consistent colour theme to further stylise the trailer/film • The font choice for the poster could be changed to something a little more creative/unique
  • 22. Feedback 2 • What did you like about the product? – I think this product is really amazing and stunning with great visuals and sound effects that make this product stand out from the crowed. – There is a lot of the cinematography used in this video trailer and I think its utterly impressive compared to my own work. – I think think the poster is also visually impressive with a lot of great effects being implemented giving this product a retro 80s vibe. • What improvements could have been made to the product? • The only thing I can think about is the sound quality, the music and sound effects are perfect, but the monologue audio could be improved with a better microphone.
  • 23. Feedback 3 • What did you like about the product? – Visuals are really impressive, the music is incredible and your sound effects really contribute to the direction your story is taking – Your poster looks really good, very professional and I really like some of the effects you’ve done, I’m getting a retro video game sort of vibe from it. • What improvements could have been made to the product? – I feel sometimes I was struggling to make out what the voiceover was trying to portray and there's moments where there's an audible intake of breath before the talking begins. – I noticed that bottom left poster is black and white and the rest are in colour, Id definitely consider making them all coloured or putting a black and white effect over all of them
  • 24. Peer Feedback Summary • What do you agree with from your peer feedback? • I do definitely need to sort some issues with the sound quality of my video as the monologue in particular is pretty quiet so I need to boost the sound on that track so it’s distinguishable from the music. • One of the problems with a shot in the trailer was that one of the posters was in black and white which was something that I included to show that the poster was older than the the others but in retrospect the poster did ruin the colour scheme of that shot as it stands out too much from the other posters. • I felt really happy when looking back over the feedback because I realised that all the effort I’d gone through with the stylisation of the surreal, retro aesthetic had paid off as it was one of the main focuses mentioned in what the audience liked however I also agree that there is more I can do to put emphasis on this theme in my trailer. • I agree that a problem with my poster was the title font as it doesn’t really suit the tone I was trying to set with the rest of the design • What do you disagree with from your peer feedback? • I don’t think that I should add any more filters or surreal effects as although this would make the colour scheme more consistent it would also take a lot of time especially as I hadn’t practiced this in planning so although this would be really effective it would also put me at at really high risk of not finishing my project. • I do think that some of my transitions were jarring but these are changes I can make fairly quickly in editing.
  • 25. Peer Feedback Summary • I need to improve my trailer by adjusting the volume of my opening monologue voice over, making it louder and more clear to the viewer as at the moment it sounds muffled by the music. I can do this by increasing the sound in this track in premiere or using adobe audition to make the track louder. I just want the viewers to be able to listen to the trailer without having to strain to make out what’s being said so making the voiceover louder would help me achieve this easily. • I think that I could do with changing the title font for my poster design especially after the feedback I got as I think the font looks a bit too cartoon like at the moment and although the slice marks make it fit the horror theme, I don’t think it looks good compared to the rest of the poster. I’d just need to use a font that’s just as bold as the previous fonts I’ve tested but I need one that’s more suited to the grainy retro style of my poster. • In the feedback someone thought that the transitions weren’t jarring however I thought that this is an aspect of my work that needs improving as some shots weren’t cut to the beat so this will be something that I will spend a short amount of time doing just so I can make trailer a bit more smooth overall.
