2. Evaluation Overview
This evaluation form is designed to assist you in the evaluation of your projects.
When using this form it is good practice to:
• Use appropriate terminology.
• Stay concise and focus on key points.
• Evaluate and analyse your statements.
• Focus on judgements about work rather than telling a story of how it was made.
Please find the grading matrix here to help you assess you are working at the right level.

3. Project Overview
In this section you will outline the aim of the project/task and give an
overview of the activates you undertook to complete it.
4. What was the theme of your project and
what attracted you to it?
The theme of my documentary is the Mounted Police. I was attracted
to doing this subject as I have had horses since I was young and my
mum used to be in the Mounted Section. I've always wanted to learn
about the Mounted Section in more detail, and thought it was a great
opportunity to learn more about it.
5. What research did you undertake and how
did it help develop your project?
When researching I made sure I researched a wide variety of things, so
I had a better understanding as to what the Mounted Section was like. I
started my research by looking through the internet watching
documentaries with a similar theme to mine. Looking through the
existing products was helpful as it gave me lots of ideas as to what
different techniques I can use, it also gave me ideas as to what
questions I'd ask my interviewee.
6. How did you develop and improve your ideas
throughout the project?
One thing I did to develop my ideas throughout the project was get
feedback off my peers. When stuck on what to ask my interviewee I
asked a few people as to what questions they would find interesting. I
found that a lot of them said to not make it too informative and
foucous more on the expiernce of the interviewee from whe they were
in the mounted section, including stories of what happened whilst they
were working.
7. What was the outcome of the project/task?
The outcome of the project is a documentary covering the basics
of the mounted section including how to get in, what too expect
different events and also stories of what sort of things happened in the
mounted section from the interviewee. Im happy with the outcome of
my documentary as I feel like it potrayed the way I wanted it to, giving
the audience an insight as to what actually goes on and what the
mounted police is.
8. Personal Response
This section will explore your thoughts and feelings about the
experience. This will help gain a understand of how your personal
feelings may have impacted the final outcome.
9. How did you feel about the project before
you started?
Starting the project I felt unsure as to how I could structure my
documentary. The main focous of my documentary is the interview
with my mum talking about her experience in the mounted
section, however I worried that it would be boring her just talking so I
had to think of ideas how to make it more enjoyable to watch as I
didn’t want it to be overpowering with information.
10. What do you think about your project development and
how did it help you to refine your idea?
I think that the project development was really useful in the way that it
acted as a template showing what I had to do. Creating things like my
story board gave me a clear image as to how I wanted it visually and
made it a lot easier when filming and editing. Development definitely
helped refine my audince, making the process easier as it made it
clearer what genre and what sort of methods I could use to fit my
audience criteria.
11. How did you feel when the project was
completed and why?
I was happy when I finished the project as I felt I had achieved what I
planned to do. When watching my final product I felt like I had created
a documentary that someone with with no knowledge about mounted
police could watch and afterwards have a good understanding as too
what its all about.
Finishing the project also made me feel relieved as I panicked that I
wouldn’t complete it in time, as I struggled with some parts of the
project getting me behind delaying the rest of the process.
12. Evaluating the project
In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The
evaluation may include some similar information but it will also include critical comment.
An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it
is important to be honest. Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of
the success of the project
13. What were the good points about the project/task and what did you
learn from them?
• Parallax- I felt like I made some nice parallax which worked really
nicely for cut aways. At first I dint know how to create them but they
are a great technique to use when you have a still photo and you
don’t want to just insert as a still.
• Interview- From doing the interview it deffinatley taught me to be
more specific on questions and how important it is to nail the
interview as it determinds how good your documentary as it is
basically structured around it .
14. What challenges did you face and how did
you respond to them?
One of the main challenges I was having to cut down my interview. I
forgot to tell my interviewee that the documentary had to be under 5
minutes long and they went into great detail on every question that I
asked. Although this was good as I didn’t run out of footage, it did
mean that I had to cut out a lot of the interview which had some really
interesting information in about her time in the force.
Another challenge that I faced not knowing how to split the interview
up. I watched a few documentarys on YouTube to see how others had
done this and it gave me techniques as to how do so, such as cut
aways, voice overs...
15. What were the negative points about the
experience, and what could you have done to
improve them?
• I think by far the most negative thing about making the documentary
was the time management. At times I was really on top of my work
but the minute I got slightly behind it messed up the time table of
when I should have had things done by. Getting behind also affected
the quality of my work as I rushed parts to catch up meaning it wasn’t
done to the highest standard it could have been. Next project I do I
will work out what I have to have completed evryday so I don’t fall
behind.
16. How would you rate the final piece? [think along the lines of
poor, satisfactory, good or excellent...justify your rating]
I would say my final product was good. It matches the brief that I
created for it and I feel like I have achieved the target audience that I
wanted to. Its not overloading with information but deffinatly gives the
audience a good understanding of what the mounted section is all
about.
17. What is your opinion of your final piece? What
elements do you think are successful and why?
Personally I feel like I have done a good job on my documentary and
have created something that is an easy watch. With the amount of
footage I worried that I was not going to be able to cut it down to the
time limate and if I did I would miss a lot of good information from the
interview, but I feel that wasn’t the case.
I like how I have used pictures from when my mum was in the mounted
section and have linked them into the documentry when she talks
about that specific subject.
18. How did you design appeal to your target
audience?
As it was aimed at a younger audience, I didn’t want it to be too
overpowering with information as I feared it would make it boring. I
made sure to include different stories from when the interviewee was
in the force such as the fights at the football matches, rioting and other
stories as they entertaining to listen to but also give you an insight as to
how tough it could be as you don’t really hear people talking about the
more dangerous aspects of the job.
When I could I added clips, photos, parallax's to split up the interview
as it would have been very full on if not and could potentially have
been boring.
19. Analysis
In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make
sense of what happened in the project. You should demonstrate how
your decisions informed the project development and the success of the
outcome.
20. In what ways was the overall project a
success?
Overall I feel like my project was a success as I have created a
documentary on the mounted section that gives people with no
knowledge about it a clear image of what happens in the mounted
police, what its like, how to join, the history of it...
21. What elements did not go well and why?
Even though visually I think the documentary looked nice I do think the
editing was very basic. I feel I could have also used different camera
angles in the interview and flicked between the two cameras so it
wasn’t just a constant angle throught the whole video.
22. How did your skills develop during the portfolio? [remember,
skills aren't just technical, remember things like organisation,
time management, communication, etc as well]
• Since creating my product I feel that my organisational skills have
deffinatley improved in the way I listed everything I had to do in what
order so it would run smothly in the editing process. Such as making
all my parallax's before editing my video so I knew beforehand where
I could place them and what part of the interview I could link them to.
• Ive also come to an understanding of how important time
management is and how it can affect you the minute you get slightly
behind.
23. What meaning and messages did you want to
convey and were you successful?
I didn’t have a specific message that I wanted to convey to the audince
I just wanted them to get a good understanding of what the mounted
police is all about and the history of it. An unintentional message I feel
it potrays is that it’s a lot harder then people make it out to be.
24. What feedback did you get from your peers
and viewings?
When showing my peers nearly everyone said how they like the fact I
had used the pictures of my mum from when she was on mounted
section, as it linked in nicely with the interview and gave it more of a
personal feel to the documentary as it wasn’t just random pictures of
the internet.
Another positive comment from my peers was that they liked the clips
from around the mounted police stables as it sets the scene in a way.
They also like the way I used the clips to separate the interview up.
Many people said that I could have used more techniques in the editing
process which I agree with as I think visually it would have look better
and not so basic.
25. What would you do differently in the future
and why?
In the future I would deffinatley give myself more time which would
help improve my work immensley and plan my work in more detail so I
wasn’t just making my work up as I go along.
Another thing I will do nect time is go into more detail when
researching my target audience. Ive learnt this project how important it
is to really analyse my target audience as the product is for them and
they will be the ones critiquing it. Audience research also massively
helps, as all you have to do is ask questions to your audience on how
you should create that product and then have to make your final
product based around the answers they have given to you.
26. Action Plan
This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and
identify ways you could develop.
27. If you were making a similar project in the
future, what would you do differently?
One thing I would do differently is give myself more time when it
comes to planning and making my actual product. I feel like if I had
planned my interview better it would have improved the overall
documentary as I asked too many question and had far too much
footage, so I had to chop it all down meaning I missed a lot of the
interview that I wanted to put in. In terms of cutaways I wish I had
planned more specifically as to what I was going to film and how it links
into the interview. Even though some of the videos and parallaxs
related to what was been spoken about, others didn’t and I felt it
looked a bit random and unproffesional in parts.
28. How could you develop your skills for future projects? Please
identify the appropriate resources and courses. For example,
webpages, tutorials, books, short courses and qualifications.
One area I feel I need to develop in is video editing. Although I have the
basic skills to editing I want to learn how to edit to more specific types
of videos especially documentarys. Even though I feel like I have a good
understanding as to how to structure them, I want to be able to make
them look more proffesional and entertaining to watch. Resourses that
would help me improve is already exsisting documentarys so I could
pick up on techniques they have used.
29. What personal attributes could you develop to
ensure you are working at a professional level?
One personal attribute I would develop is my time management. I feel
like in certain points of making my project I left bits till last minute
rushing them and not completing to the best standard I could have.
Ensuring that I had left myself more time I could have spent more time
experimenting different ways to layout my documentary and see which
worked best.
