Life in the 1950's was a lot more simple, without all the complications brought about by today's fast
pace. I could imagine myself being a "Soda Jerk" while I worked my way through college to be an
accountant, a mechanical engineer, or an architect; all of which are very respectable career choices,

I first considered exploring the effect of irregular plot pacing and the placement of the murder at the
beginning of the novel when I picked "The Effect of Irregular Plot Pacing" as a literary discussion
topic. Now in order to determine the effect of these factors, I had to understand what irregular plot
pacing was. Irregular plot pacing is the rhythm of the novel, of the chapters and scenes and

Peer review After a zealous and critical conference session, I received some suggestions, feedback

Why Were the Pace Codes Introduced?
The year, 1984 saw the introduction of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act, also known as the
PACE codes. The PACE codes were an act of parliment, the introduction of these codes was to
standardise and proffessionalise police work. It basically provides a core framework of police
powers and safeguards around stop and search, arrest, detention, investigation, identification and

The Metropolitan Police began Operation Swamp in 1981 at the beginning of April, aimed at
reducing street crime, mainly through the over use of the sus law which resulted in a number of
black youths being arrested. It was these actions that fuellled the beginning of the riots with bricks
and bottles being hurled at police and vechiles and buildings being set ablaze due to police trying to
make arrests. The "SUS" law caused so much discontent amongst certain areas of the population
following riots in the areas of St Pauls, Bristol in 1980, Brixton, London and Toxteth, Liverpool in
1981 because its alleged abuse was believed to be a contributory factor to these events.
Consequently there was a public inquiry into the riot headed by Lord Scarman, which resulted in the
Scarman Report published on November 25th 1981 and the abolishion of the "SUS" law.
With the "SUS" law no longer in place there was a void where codes of conduct and safeguards

In this case a prostitute in custody had informed the police that she was a heroin addict and she had
obtained medication to alleviate her withdrawal symptoms. She made an incriminating statement
which she later did not want to be admitted before the court. She said that she had taken some
heroin and was therefore under the influence of the drugs while making her statement. There was
evidence given by a medical expert that she also suffered from a psychiatric disorder which would
was made worse by drug use and therefore affected the reliability of her confession. The Court of
Appeal held that s76 (2) (b) applied because the defendant's mental state had to be taken into
account and could render her confession unreliable. It would be useful to have Martin assessed to
determine whether he was under the influence of drugs and what effect that could have on the
reliability of his confession.
When the suspect go agitated and distressed DC Bright offered to let him go providing he would
confess to the crime. He agreed and signed the confession. A confession is a formal
acknowledgement of a crime. S 82 (1) of PACE 1984 defines it as "any statement wholly or partly
adverse to the person who made it, whether made to someone in authority or not, whether made in
words or otherwise." The general rule of admissibility of confession is that it is admissible against
