Cult Of The Amateur By Andrew Keen Analysis
In his book, Cult of The Amateur, Andrew Keen titles the phenomenon of democratization of the web ,
where almost anyone in this age now has the opportunity to put whatever they desire on the web, the
great seduction . For example, a survey done in the United Kingdom revealed that nearly one third of
teenagers aged fourteen and above, had some sort of content online. (White and Wyn 2008) As the
amount of content being produced and posted online far outsources the capability of any authority to
censor or monitor them, it can accurately be said that genuine cultural experiences, universal truth,
and professionalism are disappearing at record speed. POINT 1 Disappearance of Truth It was what
Keen called the great seduction where the new web promised to bring more truth and globalization but
instead, it brought a truth created by the general consensus of web users (16). Keen likens this to Big
Brother from the novel 1984, where Big Brother decided ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, with the democratization of the web, the process as whole is undergoing massive structural
changes as the steps of the ladder to merited excellence are vanishing from society. (Keen 2007)
Plagiarism is everywhere. Whether, credible or not ideas are nabbed from everyday from so many
websites around the globe and are presented as their own without giving credit of where they came
from. This is an epidemic of unjust violation and theft of intellectual property and should not be
tolerated. Majority of youths, or Digital Natives are in the process of developing their identities and
social media is one of the most attractive mediums available to them (White and Wyn 2008). As a
result, gross amounts of fraudulent user generated content are being uploaded and surface on the web
almost instantaneously. (Keen

New Zealand s Mandatory Mediation
The above jurisdictions may shed some light on New Zealand s mandatory mediation scheme in
Employment Law. In other nations, resolution rates are lower with mandatory mediation than
voluntary mediation. However, within New Zealand, employment issues are more likely to be
resolved by the parties themselves rather than with judicial intervention. This is partially reflected in
the statistics, where of the 9,278 mediation services applications disposed of in 2002 to 2003, only
1,155 disputes (12.4 per cent) were not settled by mediation. Thus, arguably there is something
specific to the New Zealand context that correlates with high settlement rates.
Spiller notes that high settlement rates may be due to the court referred mediation scheme ... Show

Part IV: Mandatory mediation s impact on the legal profession and the civil justice system
Legal professionalism
A broader concern questions why the Act refers disputants to mandated mediation. This is because
under rule 13.4 of the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act (Lawyers: Conduct and Client Care) Rules
2008, a lawyer must advise their client of alternatives to litigation which are readily available. With
Mediation Services offered by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, mediation
clearly falls within this rule. Thus, a corollary of making mediation mandatory is undercutting the role
and professionalism of lawyers, implying that they may not always have their client s best interests in
mind.
Furthermore, judges informally encourage disputants to explore other methods of dispute resolution
preceding litigation. This is additionally clear in Australia, where it is part of the barrister s duty to
inform the client of alternatives to litigation if reasonable. Thus, one argument is that it is unnecessary
to mandate mediation when advocating its use is already within the scope of the solicitor s duties.
Perhaps it may be more fitting to increase awareness of the availability and feasibility of mediation,
rather than legislating it as an enforced option. This is especially in other areas of law as well, where
mediation may be practical, but is under utilised.

Technological Experience in Electronics
I have experienced and learned many things about electronics since I was 12. My father taught me
many things about electronic devices. When I was young, before the age of 12, I enjoyed observing
my father as he worked on damaged electronic devices. As I got older, my curiosity became immense
and I started to ask many questions. At first, I got to unscrew the object with screwdrivers. In the
article How to Use a Screwdriver by an eHow contributor instructed that rotating the screwdriver
clockwise would insert the screw. If you rotate the screwdriver counter clockwise it would remove the
screw. I still remember how to insert and remove a screw with a screwdriver until this day. Then my
father would eventually explain the components of the devices and how to distinguish similar or
relatively alike components. Some simple examples are capacitors, which are shaped differently
according to their functionality. The Basic Electronics Tutorials explained the Capacitor, sometimes
referred to as a Condenser, is a simple passive device that is used to store electricity . There are many
types of capacitors on a circuit board which can be distinguished by sizes or its relative area that s on
the board. There are electrolytic, film, dielectric and ceramic capacitor. Most electronics use
electrolytic capacitors. Capacitors are usually wrapped with a plastic label. When a capacitor
malfunction and burn, the heat would also burns the plastic label and the label would become ruined

Compare The Stranger And Crime And Punishment
The research paper critiques the choice of crime presented in The Stranger by Albert Camus and
Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky. By focusing on the detachment and solitary meaning
creation of the protagonists of both the novels, the paper discovers similarities and differences in the
existential questions answered by the protagonists through their choice of crime. In an existentialist
viewpoint meaning is constructed by the conscious individual in an attempt to find a rational
explanation for his/her existence. The paper reveals different dimensions of the notions of detachment
and freedom based on the existential outlook of the protagonists. The protagonist s crimes and their
response to the ideas of punishment and repentance which the State and Christianity try to impose
upon them depict a conflict between the individual and the society. Analyzing this conflict the paper
finds that the deviation of the protagonists from serious consideration of prevailing social principles is
a result of their detachment and solitary life. The idea of meaninglessness of existence is analyzed by
examining the crimes of the protagonists and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dostoevsky in Crime and Punishment and Albert Camus in The Stranger introduce such individuals
who reflect a tendency to move away from the people around them. Raskolnikov, the protagonist of
Crime and Punishment is a person who is too conscious about his individuality to be part of it. His
preoccupation with his individuality is the cause of his detachment from the society. On the other hand
Meursault, the protagonist of The Stranger is extremely indifferent to the society. His indifference
leads him away from the society and its principles. Though they differ in their attitude towards the
society, the intensity of their detachment is more or less the

Revolt of 1857
The First War of Indian Independence or The Great Revolt of 1857: The Indian soldiers in the East
India Company s army rebelled against the British in 1857. The English historians have painted this
revolt as a mutiny of the sepoys. But the Indian historians describe it as the First war of Indian
Independence. It is also known as the Great Revolt of 1857. Lord Canning was the Governor General
of India at that time. The causes of the Great Revolt were many. They may be classified as political,
administrative, economic, social, religious, military and immediate causes. 1. Political Causes : The
annexation policy of British was one of the major causes. The terms of the Subsidiary treaties signed
by Wellesley with different rulers were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Measures like the suppression of Sati and female infanticide, remarriage of widows and the right of
inheritance to Christian converts offended the Indian orthodox sentiments. 5. Religious Causes : The
Christian missionaries were active in propagating Christianity. These activities created a sense of fear
in the minds of the Indians. They suspected that the British were out to destroy their religions and
convert India into a Christian land. This declaration created a great anger and disbelief against the
British rule. Religious sentiments were aroused when the British imposed taxes on the lands belonging
to temples and mosques. The priests and the maulvis showed their discontent against the British rule.
All these activities made the British unpopular. 6. Military Causes : The Indian soldiers were called
the Sepoys. They constituted the majority of the British army in India. In fact, the sword of the British
power rested on the loyalty and strength of these Indian Sepoys. But they were treated with contempt
and made to feel inferior by the British. They were paid less than their British counterparts. The Indian
sepoys had no chance of promotion in the army. They were prohibited from their traditional religious
practices like wearing a saffron mark on their forehead, growing beard and wearing turbans. Lord

Lexington And Concord Germany Battle Analysis
The Lexington and Concord Germany Battle is an armed conflict between the British Army and

Comparing Poems Mother To Son And Success Is Counted...
The poems Mother to Son and Success Is Counted Sweetest seem to be illustrating their view of the
meaning of life and success in one way or another, but from different perspectives. Langston Hughes
describes the hardships of life by using an old, worn down stairwell as a conceit.¨Life for me ain t
been no crystal stair. It s had tacks in it, And splinters And boards were torn up, And places with no
carpet on the floor Bare.¨Langston is talking about the poor in this message, specifically poor black
Americans who were facing injustice and civil rights issues in Langston Hughes lifetime of living in
the Harlem Renaissance. Langston was trying to explain some of the adversities they would have to
adhere to on the road to success.

Dickinson s poem comes from a different overview. Dickinson starts with a figure who has already
reached the pinnacle of success. In addition, this person has never had to endure the climb like the
community in Langston s poem ¨Mother to Son.¨ Dickinson explains that without the obstacles to
success and the failure that goes along with it, one cannot truly appreciate what they have. Dickinson s
characters come from wealth and royalty. Plus have been given success, but the purple host isn t the
star in this poem. The one Dickinson wants to have the vision on is not the king, but the dying man on
the battlefield. The dying man on the battlefield has failed, he s about to lose his life and he will never
be able to reach success, never be able to succeed. So Dickinson s point is the person who will never
succeed will always appreciate the true meaning of success over a person who success is just given to
them. It s sort of some kind of irony in a

Lotus Bassinet Research Paper
Lotus Bassinet Review If you have been searching the web for baby products that you can fall in love
with, chances are good you have seen the Lotus Travel Crib and other products. The reason for this is
simple. Lotus designs items that make it easy to travel with a little one. It does not matter whether you
are traveling to Grandma s house or across the country to stay in a motel on vacation. Unsure if you
should consider it? Check out our Lotus Bassinet review to find out more about this extremely
versatile brand of bassinets, play yards, and travel cribs. The Difference Between Lotus and Other
Cribs/Bassinets/Playards Most bassinets are too bulky to be easy to carry along on adventures outside
of the home. Most of them do not fold up or fit inside of a storage container the way that the Lotus
does. Travel cribs are still rather large cribs that are difficult to carry if you must travel via a plane.
Playards are the same way. Many of them are playpens that are designed in a way that allows them to
fold up flat, but not fold up small. Lotus products fold up small. They are designed for traveling, but
they are comfortable enough to allow you to use them without worry when at home. The Guava
family Lotus crib folds up small enough to be carried in a large shoebox if you are going to choose the
bassinet style crib. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How Does Power Control In Macbeth
It is the human instinct that the more power one wants the more degenerate activities one must do to
accomplish it. In Shakespeare s disaster of Macbeth, a warrior whose respectable desire for control
drives him to do shocking deeds that prompt his end. Shakespeare demonstrates that power taints by
utilizing Macbeth who undermines under the prospect of having control over others. Macbeth winds
up degenerate under the prospect of getting to be the best and picking up relatively entire control over
the general population that he runs the show. Macbeth needs the power seriously enough to do
loathsome deeds, for example, submit regicide.
Who is responsible for Duncan s death? Someone filled with anger, greed, or jealousy. Both, Macbeth

My Accomplishment Analysis
When most people think of an accomplishment that brought them into adulthood, many would think
of their first job, going to college, or even simply receiving good grades in school. For me, my
accomplishment has been a work in progress for the last six years. Sports have always been a big part
of my life and how I live it. I started running track in 6th grade and have had a strange bond with the
sport ever since. A normal person after running their heart out for 50 seconds around the track would
naturally want to rollover and puke, but it gives me a feeling inside that I can not put into words.
When I first started running track in 6th grade, my times for the 400 meter dash were just over a
minute long. Moving on to freshman year I decided ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Things had changed from a year ago and personally I thought I could beat the record by putting in the
time even when track wasn t in season. Even though my mind thought I could beat the record, it
stayed to myself so no one knew about my ridiculous dream. As junior year started, I could see myself
getting stronger and faster. Then spring came and track started up again, and that same number, 48.9
seconds, was posted in the locker room. By the last meet of the year, my personal best was 50
seconds. This may sound impressive to someone who knows where I started, but to me it was a
disappointment because I had missed my goal for the year by a second. Through this disappointment, I
saw how much I had achieved in the last three years and got the extraordinary chance to run in the
Nebraska State Track meet on our team s 4x400 relay. The accomplishments I have slowly achieved
over the last three years have showed me that if you work hard enough at a goal, you can achieve it
with time. I have one last season of running track and I will give my all to have my name posted on
the board so for years to come other kids trying to become something have a goal they can

Harry Potter Rite Of Passage
The film The Harry Potter and The Sorcerers uses religious contents to illustrate to the viewer that
good will always triumph evil. My argument has been supported by theories in Malory Nye s
Religion: the basics, Second Edition about ritual, belief and text. In addition the rite of passage model
by Arnold van Gennep to support the message of the film. It can also be understood through the
characters action and expressions that in life good will always overcome evil. This have been analyzed
by Roland Barthes idea that the use of texts work on different levels, meaning, text can not only be

Roland Barthes advises that in order to understand religion of a given society, one has to look beyond
the texts; other things like architecture, art and music must also be analyzed. In the film, there are
various instances where witchcraft powers are used and the prevailing belief is that of occult and
Satanism. However, even with the much magic in the film, the author separates the witchcraft magic
and there is a different kind of magic known to human beings. This is evident when Dumbledore says,

developed over time through study and practical experience. Some individuals may be born with a
greater propensity towards leadership, but even these individuals must take advantage of leadership
experiences in order to hone their skills. The Bible gives us examples of men and women who
appeared to be unlikely leaders, but were molded by God to guide God s people in times of need.
Moses the murderer led the Israelites to the Promised Land and David the adulterer became the
greatest king of Israel (Exodus 2 Samuel). What set these men apart was not their genius, speaking
ability or military prowess but rather their dependence on God. The kings that followed David failed
to ensure that Israel remained faithful to the Lord and this resulted in the division of the kingdom and
exile of the nation (1 2 Kings). Christian leaders of today can look to the example of Moses and David
to encourage perseverance and commitment to following God s leading. Indeed, God will always
provide the means for His people to succeed in the roles where He places them (2 Corinthians

Truffaut On Love Essay
children chase the lovers when the man chases the women. Gérard shows his brutal and child like
nature when he chases one of his tormentors, when he gets him he slaps him, a primal and a beast just
like children would curl. The spectacle of the lovers is always accompanied by either screams or
whispers and extremely agitated and exciting body languages. The children are constantly reactive to
the spectacle of the love that they are seeing. The second motif will be the connection between love
and death. In a perfect way the spectacle in Truffaut s film constantly connected to the looming to the
unavoidable death. We noticed through the first part of the film with the shining presence of the film
when she was clothed in light. Not a coincidence at all that Gérard wears all black which foreshadows
his fate. Truffaut very subtly continues the symbolic play with colors, Bernadette will only wear white
until the crucial foreshadow moment of Gérard when they kiss goodbye. For the first time their
relationship is connected to sadness. Just like a child Gérard proposes to Bernadette by singing in a
very childish way. This moment is important because the promise of a life together will be derailed by
an accident. The end of the film is sectioned again by the unavoidable reality of death that will destroy
love. Truffaut loves films about goddesses like women and love are consistently marked by death. The
women and the reality of Eros and passion and love that is deeply connected to the reality of death.

The flow of blood through the heart is controlled by four valves. If any are not working correctly,
blood cannot flow or be pumped effectively to the heart. The four valves are: the tricuspid, pulmonary

operation and in this paper, I will discuss the most common one which is a mitral valve prolapse. A

The use of beta blockers to slow the heart rate may benefit patients who have episodes of tachycardia,

patientwill probably not need treatment. If it has become severe, then the patient can benefit from

Crime And Violence In Latin America
Over the last two decades, many Latin American countries have seen crime and violence increase
considerably; in some nations, this upward trajectory has been steep. During the 1980s, homicide rates
per 100,000 population rose from 20.5 to 89.5 in Colombia; from 11.5 to 19.7 in
Brazil; from 2.1 to 12.6 in Trinidad and Tobago; and from 2.4 to 11.5 in Peru (Ayres 1998: 3). In the
1990s, this upsurge of crime continued. In Venezuela, for instance, rates of homicide per
100,00 population increased from 12.6 in 1990 to 33 in 2000; the increase since 1997, when this rate
stood at 19 per 100,000, has been particularly pronounced. In Brazil, rates of homicide increased from
18.6 per 100,000 in 1990 and a low point of 15.6 in 1992 to 25 in 1999. And

Shaving Accessories Are Not The Most Innovative
Shaving accessories are not the most innovative or intriguing products in today s technological world,
but somehow, a small startup that sells razor blades through the mail has managed to reach a valuation
of a billion dollars within 6 years. When Unilever acquired Dollar Shave Club in July, it was the
largest ever acquisition of a venture backed startup in Los Angeles.
The idea originated in a conversation at a holiday party in 2010. A year later, founder Mike Dubin
launched Dollar Shave Club, abbreviated DSC.
In 2012 the company gained attention through a series of funny, off beat Youtube ads that went viral.
The ads were so successful that they gained 12,000 subscribers in only two days, and by the end of
2012, DSC had made over $4 million. Their growth continued to be exponential. In 2013 they made
$19 million, then reached $64 million in 2014.
Were a few humorous ads enough to grow a company to a billion dollar value? The ads gained a lot of
attention, but the success of the company was also due to several other factors. Read on to gain some
insights about how dollar shave club achieved a billion dollar valuation in less than 6 years.
The company addressed an annoying problem

brands like Gillette charge little or nothing for razor handles, then overcharge for the blades, to the
point where stores keep them in locked cases.

Brooke Davis Case
Case Study of Character: The character I have chosen for the focus of my case study is Brooke Davis,
from the television show, One Tree Hill. Over the nine seasons of this show, we see Brooke go from a
wild teen not caring about her future regarding careers to an admirable, hardworking, and focus
individual. Throughout her high school teen years, Brooke lacked parental guidance in her household.
In her childhood years, she witnessed a lot of fighting and arguments of her parents. In her high school

absence. Without any rules or restrictions, Brooke resorted to a partying type life style for a while. She

The identity status she best fits in at this stage is identity diffusion. I feel like she fits better in this
stage because as a result of Brooke not having experiencing any sort of rules around her household
during her teenage years, her world revolved around shopping, partying, and boys. She never really
gave much thought to what she wanted to become in the future because she lacked that motivation
from her parents. Later on, Brooke develops a strong interest in designing her own clothes and begins
her own clothing line, Clothes Over Bros, while still being a senior in high school. After she graduates
from high school, four years pass and we see Brooke become a major and well known fashion
designer in New York and her clothing company had already made millions. This is where Brooke
Davis experienced the status of identity achievement. Her clothing line started as a small idea in high
school and through exploration of the fashion designer world, her dream became a reality. I would not
say that she ever experienced the status of identity moratorium because she never really was torn
between to career areas. Once she knew that she had that desire to design clothes, she went for it
without second guessing herself. The status that Brooke proved wrong is identity foreclosure. She
proved this wrong because just because fashion designing was her passion, she did not let the industry
change who she was. She managed to be highly successful while still remaining humble and not
changing her beliefs or morals to conform to everyone else. A lot of time, the money changes people
but because money was always a constant in her life she was able to remain that presidential worthy

Faith And Transformation After Christ s Resurrection
Faith and Transformation after Christ s Resurrection Jesus Christ death and resurrection is important
to teach and prepare the people. There were so many insecurities and fears the people had about death
and some even felt unworthy to die innocent. After Jesus came here to simply eliminate the lies that
the world has conceived regarding the body and where the soul would end. Scholars believed in
reincarnation like Josephus, who called it transmigration. Others like the Pharisee s , they believed in
the resurrection and thought the soul of the righteous lives on in a new body and the wicked souls
perish. Paul of Tarsus explains, in (1 Cor 15:40 44) that there are two bodies a heavenly body and an
earthly body. They laid Christ s dead body into the tomb with dishonor and he raised in glory his risen
body from the dead. In another way to explain a believer in the resurrection of a body without their
full understanding, according to Klawans Josephus write, a Maccabean martyr looked at his hands and
spoke , I hope to get these hands back again (pg.108 Josephus Theologies), meaning when he dies he
wanted to return in the same body in which he had his faith in. At that moment, the martyr could have
begun to believe in Christ s words, explained that the resurrected body is not like the first, Mark 14:58

Bronze Age Catastrophes
The Bronze Age started around 2300 BC in Europe and it consisted of the new found material of
bronze. It was an important development in many cities during the time. Bronze was used for a
multitude of items including weapons, chariot parts, tools, decorative objects, and ritual vessels. The
bronze age eventually came to an end because of four major catastrophes that came around 1200 BC
that help shape the first millennium. Climate change, migration, new technology, and administrative
innovations was the origin of this change. One of the first catastrophe that came and helped end the
bronze age was climate change. Around 1200 BC many regions in Afro Eurasia were used to having

Waiting For Godot, By Judy Hegarty Lovett
Waiting for Godot is known to be a classic example of Theater of the Absurd , drama using the neglect
of conventional dramatic form to portray the ineptness of human struggle in a meaningless world.
Director Judy Hegarty Lovett and actor Conor Lovett s Beckett work with Gare St Lazare Players
Ireland has gained them a reputation as two of the world s foremost Beckett interpreters. Judy Hegarty
Lovett and her husband, Conor Lovett, had a very successful year in 2014. I was very interested to see
if this director/actor power couple held up to all the hype, and I was delighted to see such a strong
performance by both. Conor, although working in a lot of solo plays the past year, was a pleasure to
watch, and well deserved his Stage award for Acting Excellence, in 2014, for Title and Deed. Judy
Hegarty did an outstanding job in the production of Waiting for Godot with the use of the simplicity of
the character s needs, and subtle comical nature.
Although reading this play was entertaining, it was a lot more eye opening in theaters. Throughout
director Judy Hegarty Lovett s enactment, I was able to uncover themes within the performance that I
was not aware of previously. With the help of absurdity and comedy, she effectively portrayed themes
of choice, time, and uncertainty.
Waiting for Godot consists of two men, Vladimir (Didi) played by Conor Lovett and Estragon (Gogo)
played by Gary Lydon. Together they partake in many insignificant actions while trying to kill time

Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islanders Civil Rights
Faith Bandler was one of the most prominent figures promoting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
civil rights in Australia, and played a significant role in the success of the 1967 referendum. Bandler s
background and early life significantly influenced her later activism, causing her to question injustices
against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Bandler spent most of her adult life promoting the cause
of ATSI civil rights and racial equality, and was involved in a number of key events, one of the most
significant being the 1967 referendum. Bandler s legacy is extremely important in Indigenous
Australia s and Australia s history, and her life will continue to impact millions.
Bandler s experiences with racial inequity in her early life prompted her to question injustices against
Indigenous Australians and become an activist. Bandler s father, Peter Mussing, was blackbirded from
Vanuatu when he was 13 years old and worked on a Queensland sugar cane plantation for 17 years,
eventually escaping and marrying Bandler s mother, a Scottish Indian woman living in New South
Wales. Together they had had eight children, including Ida Faith Bandler in 1920. Throughout her
childhood, Bandler heard about her father s experiences, and witnessed how other Indigenous children
at her school were racially abused. These encounters with racial inequality at a young age influenced
and motivated her later activism. During World War II, Bandler and her sister Kath served in the

Aum Shinrikyo Religion
Aum Shinrikyo was a New Religious Movement that was cast into the public spotlight after members
of the group took part in a religious terror attack in Tokyo in 1995; however, as violent this act may
have been, Aum Shinrikyo did not begin as a violent religion. Instead, it was shaped into one over
time as the religion slowly began on the path to introversion and eventual shunning of the greater
society as whole, generating a following that was skeptical of the dominant society, and held the
power of the guru above everything else. Aum Shinrikyo, as with any other new religion, offered a
different explanation to the outside world than the modern society. The modern society attempts to
promote science and traditional religion, even if they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The religion had its purpose shift from an inclusive religion that was attempting to save as many souls
as possible from the end times, to an exclusive religion that focused on surviving the impending
apocalyptic events that were to take place in the 21st century according to their new apocalyptic
prophecy. This shift could be attributed to any threat of nuclear, chemical or high tech warfare: the
Gulf War being a good example, or the power vacuum that was created by the fall of the Soviet Union
in 1991. Whatever the cause was, the resulting focus shift increased the distrust between the practicing
Aum Shinrikyo members and the dominant society as a whole, contributing to a mindset among the
members of the religion that those of the dominant society were no longer able to be saved and were,
in fact, the enemy. Even if this mindset were not wholeheartedly true for the members of the religion,
a belief in the religion, specifically in relation to the Tantra Vajrayana addition in the early 1990s, and
the power that it gave to the guru, Asahara, could be interpreted as allowing for the murder of those
not saved. A member who had attained gedatsu could murder someone with lesser spiritual power and
therefore increases the karma of the one that was murdered, making the murder a good deed (In the
Wake... 406). This thought process would have then justified the terror attack in Tokyo as a good
karmic deed. Additionally, the teachings of the Four Infinite Virtues, specifically detachment,
accompanied with Tantra Vajrayana ideal, created a disconnection from reality, that only viewed the
world as a series of past karmic actions, with no connection with the present , thereby eliminating any
personal accountability for one s actions, specifically if it was done in the spirit of the guru, whose
power was absolute, and therefore, beyond

Likewise, tourism encourages improvements in transport infrastructure resulting in upgraded roads,

Analysis of October Sky Essay
Living Above Ground The inspirational true story of Homer Hickam in October Sky reminds us all to
strive for our goals and never give up, even in the face of adversity. However, Homer was fighting for
a great deal in his pursuit of rocketry, he was even fighting for his life. Born in a coal mining town,
son of a foreman, Homer seemed destined to work the mine when he grew up. But in October Sky,
Homer has to overcome what the mine represents: isolation and death. The life of a coal miner is often
isolated from several things that most people would take for granted. Due to the demand of coal,
towns are set up wherever the mines are opened. In the case of the movie, the main setting was in the
remote town of Coalwood, West Virginia. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This provides an interesting dynamic and internal conflict in Homer. He is overcoming the isolation
from his father by mining, and John even considers him a man since he has done hard work in the
mine. However, he also becomes isolated from his friends that he has spent so much time with
recently. He is relegated to spending lunch breaks catching up with the other members of the rocket
boys. While being separated from the outside world and even family and friends may be one effect of
the mine, a larger impact may be the fact that the mine is a place of death in the mind of Homer.
Throughout the movie, Homer s fear of the mine is shown in cases like where the boys are shooting
Roy Lee s car and he mentions how O Dell s father died when the roof of the mine collapsed near him
and cut his head off. Allusions are made to the symbol of death throughout the movie. The elevator
could be seen as a coffin, an instrument of isolation. When Homer is going down into the mine for the
first time, the shot is of him being lowered into the mine shaft, much like that of being lowered into a
grave. Homer even begins to blame himself for the death of Ike Bykovsky later in the movie. Because
Bykovsky helped Homer build the first rocket, Homer s father sent him into the mine, where he was
later killed. Homer keeps Bykovsky s number tag as a reminder of what his future could

Tuberculosis
Forms of tuberculosis have been present in the human population since ancient times. Fragments of
spinal columns from Egyptian mummies dating back to 2400 BC show definite pathological signs of
tubercular decay. Around 460 BC Hippocrates wrote on the subject of a disease which we now know
as tuberculosis. In his article he warned his colleagues against visiting cases in the late stages of the
disease, because the patient s inevitable death might damage the reputations of the attending

from tuberculosis, was instructed by his physician to move to a healthier climate. Brehmer traveled to
the Himalayan mountains mainly to pursue his botanical studies. What he didn t know at the time was
that this journey would be attributed to curing his disease. When Brehmer returned home he began to

hypothesized that his recovery was directly related to the healthier environment found in the
Himalayan mountains. Brehmer built an institution in Gorbersdorf where his patients received a
nutritious diet and spent great amounts of time on their balconies where they were exposed to
continuous fresh air. This clinic was the first step towards the development of a sanatorium. Sanatoria,
could now be found throughout Europe and the United States. A sanatorium provided two functions.

Quilt Of A Country Theme
All stories have a theme. The theme will tell you what the Character or Characters learned at the end.
Sometimes a stories theme is really obvious and sometimes it is very hard to find. But the theme is
probably the most important thing in a story. And without the theme the story is probably really
boring. I have chosen three stories and will name and explain the themes of them. The first story is A
Quilt of a country and the theme of the story is that even though we may be diverse we still have one
thing in common and that is that we are all alike and are all human and should treat others the way we
would want to be treated. The second story is Once upon a time and the theme of it is that no matter

need to work past this conflict to keep as one nation that stands above all in the end. And that we

country. Once Upon a time says that when conflict is around you will want to protect yourself and
your family. But sometimes even in your own neighborhood you can be a victim of conflict. For
example the family makes all the precautions to keep them safe. But really no matter where you are
you may never be truly safe. And that not all stories that begin with: once upon a time, will have a

Gender Roles Peter Pan
Gender Roles in Peter Pan J. M. Barrie s Peter Pan tells the story of the boy who never grew up.
Barrie paints Peter as an extraordinary character living in a mystical world called Neverland, flying
through the air, and fighting villainous pirates. He is also the boy who takes a young girl named
Wendy from England back to Neverland with him. The interaction and interdependence of Barrie s
two characters, Peter and Wendy, symbolize and spread cultural gender stereotypes by mirroring the
stereotypes embodied by the adult characters in the story Mr. and Mrs. Darling and by reflecting the
ideas of gender roles of the time and foreshadowing the children s understanding of reality and
expectations, as well as their eventual maturation.
Wendy s father, Mr. Darling, sets the prime example for adult male stereotype. Barrie characterizes
him as the breadwinner of the Darling family and a proud businessman. Throughout Barrie s insight
into his character, the reader observes him insist upon respect and obedience from his children and
wife; and even the family dog. In one instance, Mr. Darling even boasts to Wendy that his wife, Mrs.
Darling, not only loves him, but more importantly, respects him. This attitude as displayed by the
character of Mr. Darling as the most prominent adult male influence can be argued to be associated
with the male stereotype in many ways. Mr. Darling s character in the text supports the culturally
stereotypical view of the male gender as the

David Beckham
David Beckham David Robert Joseph Beckham OBE (born May 2, 1975) is an English footballer born
in Leytonstone, London. He is a midfielder for Real Madrid and captain of the English national team.
He is noted for the quality of his crossing and ability to hit free kicks and corners, particularly at long
range free kicks and also for his marriage to a Spice Girl. He has played most of his career for
Manchester United. Although there are arguably many better current players in world football none
are as famous. Manchester United 1995 2003 Beckham first signed a YTS (youth training scheme)
contract (this is similar to an apprenticeship) with United in 1991, and made his League debut in 1995,
aged 19. The next year he helped the side to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His leadership, mainly by example due to his fitness and workrate helped England to qualify for the
2002 World Cup Finals and the 1 5 defeat of Germany in Munich during a qualifier (a pivotal event
for English football fans). The final step in Beckham s conversion from villain to hero happened in
England s 2 2 draw against Greece. Needing only one point from the match in order to qualify for the
World Cup, Beckham dragged an otherwise poor England side to qualification with sheer
determination and a perfectly executed, last minute free kick. Meanwhile, taking the role of captain
seems to have helped mature him, in both skill and temperament. Beckham played in all England s
matches at Euro 2004, but failed to shine. He had his penalty saved by former Manchester United
team mate Fabien Barthez in his side s 2 1 defeat to France in their opening group game. Then, when
England s Quarter Final against hosts Portugal went to a penalty shootout, he was the first England
player to attempt a shot. Beckham fired his shot far over the crossbar and England went on to lose the
shoot out 6 5 after Englishman Darius Vassell also missed. Beckham later blamed the miss on the poor
state of the pitch, the British press blamed referee

Willy Foil
Death of a Salesman Questions
One comes to know Willy over several key points in the play. One especially revealing point is in the
beginning of the play he comes home from work and contradicts himself to no end, when talking
about Biff he says Biff is a lazy bum! then later going on to contradict himself saying There s one
thing about Biff he s not lazy later in the same dialogue. This shows that Willy is unstable in his
thoughts and not in the right mind.
Uncle Charley is the foil to Willy in the way Charley always set realistic goals and was very truthful to
himself while Willy was always telling himself he was the best and he could do anything he wanted to
which was not realistic. To Biff Bernard is his foil due to the fact in high school Bernard focused on
his school work and becomes a successful and didn t rely on his popularity to gain success but his
education. Contrast to Bernard Biff was focused on being popular and a football big shot and did rely
on his popularity to gain success. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I search and search and I search, and I can t understand it, Willy. I made the last payment on the house
today. Today, dear. And there ll be nobody home. We re free and clear. Her saying we are free and
clear while talking about the mortgage this means they achieved The American Dream of financial
security which as some would argue was the key theme of the play. In Willy s life Linda is a mother to
him. She is there to keep him steady. She never looses her temper at him even when he is screaming at
her, she never calls him out even though she knows he s borrowing money from Charley, trying to kill
himself or, that he had mistresses in the fear she would upset him in to killing

Definition Essay On Respect
When I was a little kid, about 8 to 9 years of age, I usually believed on anything a person said.
Specifically the time when one of my classmates said I ll give back your pencil at the end of class.
That s where trust comes in: a substantial belief in one s loyalty, truth, or ability. In fact, he never gave
it back which saddens me because the pencil he kept was actually my favorite one. It s understandable
that a pencil is cheap and easily replaceable, but that doesn t give anyone the right to keep it without
the owner s consent.
From my perspective, trust is like a vase, a nice well decorated artifact, that is highly fragile and easy
to break. Once it is destroyed it can be fixed, maybe by using tape or super glue, but the vase will

Be courteous: that s what respect is. Respect is also what brings people together, like a relationship or
a friendship of some sort. If not used it can also tear people apart. There is another form of respect too,
and that is respect for one s property. Ever heard of the term vandalism ? That term means: action
involving destruction of or damage to private or public property. This includes anything from writing
on a desk at school to stealing from 7 Eleven. It is a form of disrespect and crime. Property, whether a
friend s, the school s, or even a stranger s, should always be respected. Even if you smash a bottle on
the side walk. Be thoughtful and respect others, and you ll get that respect back. So what does respect
truly mean to me? Respect for me is a form of loving and admiring something or someone. It means
so much that it makes me open up more about my ideas on improving somethings in life, without
getting rudely interrupted or persecuted. Again with the friendship thing, it is the reason why I have
the friends that I think highly of today. Because we hand out and obtain respect from one another, as a
result, formed the our

You Can Hear Him From The Corridor
You can hear him from the corridor. Neil Young is kicked back on a lounge chair in the focal point of
his suite at New York s Carlyle Hotel one late morning, cutting without end at the series of his
acoustic guitar. His wet hair is brushed back and he s wearing a T shirt that says Earth, with pants and
shoes. He puts his beat up 1940s Martin past proprietor: Hank Williams by him on the sofa. Take a
seat, make yourself at home, he says. Simply then, his Samsung telephone rings; the ringtone is his
own particular voice yelling Hi?! He grabs a wrong number. I ll simply turn it off, that ll comprehend
it. Youthful is amidst a fast New York trip, and, as is regular for him, his calendar is perpetually
moving. He simply chose to do a portrayal on The Tonight Show, constraining his group to cross out a
few meetings today. Before Young are verses to the drama bit, a melody called Two Neil Youngs
Sitting on a Tree Stump, sent to him by Jimmy Fallon. Youthful doesn t care for singing his own
particular name, so he s been tweaking the words with assistance from his administrator, Elliot
Roberts. You re going to get a credit on this one, Young says to Roberts with a grin. Roberts, 73, has
worked with Young since the late Sixties, and the two still talk a few times each day. I ve never seen
him more content, Roberts says. That is a late advancement, nonetheless. In the previous couple of
years, a few of Young s nearby buddies passed on, including

Public Relations -electronic Communications Essay
In order to confirm and find what electronic forms of communication will be needed in the Public
Relations field, heavy research was needed. I consulted not only books, but web sites as well. I wanted
to make sure that I had a complete assortment of sources that would be the most realistic and
comprehensive as possible. After sorting out my research, I came to these following conclusions:

3. Teamwork is everything.
4. What is needed to run a successful business? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Are you going to just sit there and let that account go to another company? Or are you going to try to
get in touch with that client as soon as possible and try to keep their business? Let s add a twist to the
already hectic situation: You are currently in California, and your client is in Florida. The best thing to
do in this situation would be to call your client as soon as possible and then see if you need to catch a
flight out to Florida.
These questions are easily answered with this what will be the most productive way for you to ensure
you keep your client s business. No matter if it is a crisis, or just checking to make sure that they are
happy with the services you are providing them with, it is very important to stay in touch. This is
crucial in order to keep the business that you have worked so hard to gain. These days, most people
have cell phones attached to their bodies, so it is easier than it used to be to catch people when they
are on the go. But what do you do when the cell phone and voice mail aren t doing the job? Email
would be the answer to this question. No matter where you go these days, there seems to be more and
more accessibility to computers and the Internet (www.hallmark.com). A click, write a few sentences,
and pressing the send key is all you need to make sure your words are clear to who ever you are

  • 2. Cult Of The Amateur By Andrew Keen Analysis In his book, Cult of The Amateur, Andrew Keen titles the phenomenon of democratization of the web , where almost anyone in this age now has the opportunity to put whatever they desire on the web, the great seduction . For example, a survey done in the United Kingdom revealed that nearly one third of teenagers aged fourteen and above, had some sort of content online. (White and Wyn 2008) As the amount of content being produced and posted online far outsources the capability of any authority to censor or monitor them, it can accurately be said that genuine cultural experiences, universal truth, and professionalism are disappearing at record speed. POINT 1 Disappearance of Truth It was what Keen called the great seduction where the new web promised to bring more truth and globalization but instead, it brought a truth created by the general consensus of web users (16). Keen likens this to Big Brother from the novel 1984, where Big Brother decided ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, with the democratization of the web, the process as whole is undergoing massive structural changes as the steps of the ladder to merited excellence are vanishing from society. (Keen 2007) Plagiarism is everywhere. This is an epidemic of unjust violation and theft of intellectual property and should not be tolerated. Majority of youths, or Digital Natives are in the process of developing their identities and social media is one of the most attractive mediums available to them (White and Wyn 2008). • 3. New Zealand s Mandatory Mediation The above jurisdictions may shed some light on New Zealand s mandatory mediation scheme in Employment Law. In other nations, resolution rates are lower with mandatory mediation than voluntary mediation. However, within New Zealand, employment issues are more likely to be resolved by the parties themselves rather than with judicial intervention. This is partially reflected in the statistics, where of the 9,278 mediation services applications disposed of in 2002 to 2003, only 1,155 disputes (12.4 per cent) were not settled by mediation. Thus, arguably there is something specific to the New Zealand context that correlates with high settlement rates. Spiller notes that high settlement rates may be due to the court referred mediation scheme ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Part IV: Mandatory mediation s impact on the legal profession and the civil justice system Legal professionalism A broader concern questions why the Act refers disputants to mandated mediation. This is because under rule 13.4 of the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act (Lawyers: Conduct and Client Care) Rules 2008, a lawyer must advise their client of alternatives to litigation which are readily available. With Mediation Services offered by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, mediation clearly falls within this rule. Thus, a corollary of making mediation mandatory is undercutting the role and professionalism of lawyers, implying that they may not always have their client s best interests in mind. Furthermore, judges informally encourage disputants to explore other methods of dispute resolution preceding litigation. This is additionally clear in Australia, where it is part of the barrister s duty to inform the client of alternatives to litigation if reasonable. Thus, one argument is that it is unnecessary to mandate mediation when advocating its use is already within the scope of the solicitor s duties. Perhaps it may be more fitting to increase awareness of the availability and feasibility of mediation, rather than legislating it as an enforced option. This is especially in other areas of law as well, where mediation may be practical, but is under utilised. Undermining the civil justice system Justice Winkelmann looks to how mediation is ... • 4. Technological Experience in Electronics I have experienced and learned many things about electronics since I was 12. My father taught me many things about electronic devices. When I was young, before the age of 12, I enjoyed observing my father as he worked on damaged electronic devices. As I got older, my curiosity became immense and I started to ask many questions. At first, I got to unscrew the object with screwdrivers. In the article How to Use a Screwdriver by an eHow contributor instructed that rotating the screwdriver clockwise would insert the screw. If you rotate the screwdriver counter clockwise it would remove the screw. I still remember how to insert and remove a screw with a screwdriver until this day. Then my father would eventually explain the components of the devices and how to distinguish similar or relatively alike components. Some simple examples are capacitors, which are shaped differently according to their functionality. The Basic Electronics Tutorials explained the Capacitor, sometimes referred to as a Condenser, is a simple passive device that is used to store electricity . There are many types of capacitors on a circuit board which can be distinguished by sizes or its relative area that s on the board. There are electrolytic, film, dielectric and ceramic capacitor. Most electronics use electrolytic capacitors. Capacitors are usually wrapped with a plastic label. When a capacitor malfunction and burn, the heat would also burns the plastic label and the label would become ruined ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Compare The Stranger And Crime And Punishment The research paper critiques the choice of crime presented in The Stranger by Albert Camus and Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky. By focusing on the detachment and solitary meaning creation of the protagonists of both the novels, the paper discovers similarities and differences in the existential questions answered by the protagonists through their choice of crime. In an existentialist viewpoint meaning is constructed by the conscious individual in an attempt to find a rational explanation for his/her existence. The paper reveals different dimensions of the notions of detachment and freedom based on the existential outlook of the protagonists. The protagonist s crimes and their response to the ideas of punishment and repentance which the State and Christianity try to impose upon them depict a conflict between the individual and the society. Analyzing this conflict the paper finds that the deviation of the protagonists from serious consideration of prevailing social principles is a result of their detachment and solitary life. The poems Mother to Son and Success Is Counted Sweetest seem to be illustrating their view of the meaning of life and success in one way or another, but from different perspectives. Dickinson s characters come from wealth and royalty. Plus have been given success, but the purple host isn t the star in this poem. The one Dickinson wants to have the vision on is not the king, but the dying man on the battlefield. The dying man on the battlefield has failed, he s about to lose his life and he will never be able to reach success, never be able to succeed. For me, my accomplishment has been a work in progress for the last six years. Sports have always been a big part of my life and how I live it. I started running track in 6th grade and have had a strange bond with the sport ever since. A normal person after running their heart out for 50 seconds around the track would naturally want to rollover and puke, but it gives me a feeling inside that I can not put into words. Some individuals may be born with a greater propensity towards leadership, but even these individuals must take advantage of leadership experiences in order to hone their skills. The Bible gives us examples of men and women who appeared to be unlikely leaders, but were molded by God to guide God s people in times of need. Moses the murderer led the Israelites to the Promised Land and David the adulterer became the greatest king of Israel (Exodus 2 Samuel). What set these men apart was not their genius, speaking ability or military prowess but rather their dependence on God. The kings that followed David failed to ensure that Israel remained faithful to the Lord and this resulted in the division of the kingdom and exile of the nation (1 2 Kings). Christian leaders of today can look to the example of Moses and David to encourage perseverance and commitment to following God s leading. Indeed, God will always provide the means for His people to succeed in the roles where He places them (2 Corinthians ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Gérard shows his brutal and child like nature when he chases one of his tormentors, when he gets him he slaps him, a primal and a beast just like children would curl. The spectacle of the lovers is always accompanied by either screams or whispers and extremely agitated and exciting body languages. The children are constantly reactive to the spectacle of the love that they are seeing. The second motif will be the connection between love and death. In a perfect way the spectacle in Truffaut s film constantly connected to the looming to the unavoidable death. For the first time their relationship is connected to sadness. Just like a child Gérard proposes to Bernadette by singing in a very childish way. This moment is important because the promise of a life together will be derailed by an accident. The end of the film is sectioned again by the unavoidable reality of death that will destroy love. Shaving Accessories Are Not The Most Innovative Shaving accessories are not the most innovative or intriguing products in today s technological world, but somehow, a small startup that sells razor blades through the mail has managed to reach a valuation of a billion dollars within 6 years. When Unilever acquired Dollar Shave Club in July, it was the largest ever acquisition of a venture backed startup in Los Angeles. The idea originated in a conversation at a holiday party in 2010. The ads were so successful that they gained 12,000 subscribers in only two days, and by the end of 2012, DSC had made over $4 million. Their growth continued to be exponential. In 2013 they made $19 million, then reached $64 million in 2014. Were a few humorous ads enough to grow a company to a billion dollar value? The ads gained a lot of attention, but the success of the company was also due to several other factors. Over the nine seasons of this show, we see Brooke go from a wild teen not caring about her future regarding careers to an admirable, hardworking, and focus individual. Throughout her high school teen years, Brooke lacked parental guidance in her household. In her childhood years, she witnessed a lot of fighting and arguments of her parents. The identity status she best fits in at this stage is identity diffusion. I feel like she fits better in this stage because as a result of Brooke not having experiencing any sort of rules around her household during her teenage years, her world revolved around shopping, partying, and boys. She never really gave much thought to what she wanted to become in the future because she lacked that motivation from her parents. Later on, Brooke develops a strong interest in designing her own clothes and begins her own clothing line, Clothes Over Bros, while still being a senior in high school. After she graduates from high school, four years pass and we see Brooke become a major and well known fashion designer in New York and her clothing company had already made millions. This is where Brooke Davis experienced the status of identity achievement. Her clothing line started as a small idea in high school and through exploration of the fashion designer world, her dream became a reality. I would not say that she ever experienced the status of identity moratorium because she never really was torn between to career areas. Once she knew that she had that desire to design clothes, she went for it without second guessing herself. The status that Brooke proved wrong is identity foreclosure. She proved this wrong because just because fashion designing was her passion, she did not let the industry change who she was. There were so many insecurities and fears the people had about death and some even felt unworthy to die innocent. After Jesus came here to simply eliminate the lies that the world has conceived regarding the body and where the soul would end. Scholars believed in reincarnation like Josephus, who called it transmigration. Others like the Pharisee s , they believed in the resurrection and thought the soul of the righteous lives on in a new body and the wicked souls perish. Paul of Tarsus explains, in (1 Cor 15:40 44) that there are two bodies a heavenly body and an earthly body. They laid Christ s dead body into the tomb with dishonor and he raised in glory his risen body from the dead. In another way to explain a believer in the resurrection of a body without their full understanding, according to Klawans Josephus write, a Maccabean martyr looked at his hands and spoke , I hope to get these hands back again (pg.108 Josephus Theologies), meaning when he dies he wanted to return in the same body in which he had his faith in. Waiting For Godot, By Judy Hegarty Lovett Waiting for Godot is known to be a classic example of Theater of the Absurd , drama using the neglect of conventional dramatic form to portray the ineptness of human struggle in a meaningless world. Director Judy Hegarty Lovett and actor Conor Lovett s Beckett work with Gare St Lazare Players Ireland has gained them a reputation as two of the world s foremost Beckett interpreters. Judy Hegarty Lovett and her husband, Conor Lovett, had a very successful year in 2014. I was very interested to see if this director/actor power couple held up to all the hype, and I was delighted to see such a strong performance by both. Conor, although working in a lot of solo plays the past year, was a pleasure to watch, and well deserved his Stage award for Acting Excellence, in 2014, for Title and Deed. Judy Hegarty did an outstanding job in the production of Waiting for Godot with the use of the simplicity of the character s needs, and subtle comical nature. Although reading this play was entertaining, it was a lot more eye opening in theaters. Throughout director Judy Hegarty Lovett s enactment, I was able to uncover themes within the performance that I was not aware of previously. Aum Shinrikyo Religion Aum Shinrikyo was a New Religious Movement that was cast into the public spotlight after members of the group took part in a religious terror attack in Tokyo in 1995; however, as violent this act may have been, Aum Shinrikyo did not begin as a violent religion. Instead, it was shaped into one over time as the religion slowly began on the path to introversion and eventual shunning of the greater society as whole, generating a following that was skeptical of the dominant society, and held the power of the guru above everything else. The religion had its purpose shift from an inclusive religion that was attempting to save as many souls as possible from the end times, to an exclusive religion that focused on surviving the impending apocalyptic events that were to take place in the 21st century according to their new apocalyptic prophecy. This shift could be attributed to any threat of nuclear, chemical or high tech warfare: the Gulf War being a good example, or the power vacuum that was created by the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Whatever the cause was, the resulting focus shift increased the distrust between the practicing Aum Shinrikyo members and the dominant society as a whole, contributing to a mindset among the members of the religion that those of the dominant society were no longer able to be saved and were, in fact, the enemy. Even if this mindset were not wholeheartedly true for the members of the religion, a belief in the religion, specifically in relation to the Tantra Vajrayana addition in the early 1990s, and the power that it gave to the guru, Asahara, could be interpreted as allowing for the murder of those not saved. A member who had attained gedatsu could murder someone with lesser spiritual power and therefore increases the karma of the one that was murdered, making the murder a good deed (In the Wake... 406). This thought process would have then justified the terror attack in Tokyo as a good karmic deed. Additionally, the teachings of the Four Infinite Virtues, specifically detachment, accompanied with Tantra Vajrayana ideal, created a disconnection from reality, that only viewed the world as a series of past karmic actions, with no connection with the present , thereby eliminating any personal accountability for one s actions, specifically if it was done in the spirit of the guru, whose power was absolute, and therefore, beyond ... • 40. Gender Roles Peter Pan Gender Roles in Peter Pan J. M. Barrie s Peter Pan tells the story of the boy who never grew up. Barrie paints Peter as an extraordinary character living in a mystical world called Neverland, flying through the air, and fighting villainous pirates. He is also the boy who takes a young girl named Wendy from England back to Neverland with him. The interaction and interdependence of Barrie s two characters, Peter and Wendy, symbolize and spread cultural gender stereotypes by mirroring the stereotypes embodied by the adult characters in the story Mr. and Mrs. Darling and by reflecting the ideas of gender roles of the time and foreshadowing the children s understanding of reality and expectations, as well as their eventual maturation. Wendy s father, Mr. Darling, sets the prime example for adult male stereotype. Barrie characterizes him as the breadwinner of the Darling family and a proud businessman. Throughout Barrie s insight into his character, the reader observes him insist upon respect and obedience from his children and wife; and even the family dog. In one instance, Mr. Darling even boasts to Wendy that his wife, Mrs. Darling, not only loves him, but more importantly, respects him. This attitude as displayed by the character of Mr. Darling as the most prominent adult male influence can be argued to be associated with the male stereotype in many ways. Mr. Darling s character in the text supports the culturally stereotypical view of the male gender as the Block 2 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The final step in Beckham s conversion from villain to hero happened in England s 2 2 draw against Greece. Needing only one point from the match in order to qualify for the World Cup, Beckham dragged an otherwise poor England side to qualification with sheer determination and a perfectly executed, last minute free kick. Meanwhile, taking the role of captain seems to have helped mature him, in both skill and temperament. Beckham played in all England s matches at Euro 2004, but failed to shine. He had his penalty saved by former Manchester United team mate Fabien Barthez in his side s 2 1 defeat to France in their opening group game. Then, when England s Quarter Final against hosts Portugal went to a penalty shootout, he was the first England player to attempt a shot.
