Ancient Chinese Contributions
Ancient Chinese Contributions
Kenneth Smith
Professor Maxine Brown
HUM 111 World Cultures I
November 29, 2012
The Ancient Chinese culture has contributed in many ways to the way of life today as we know it.
Upon completion of this paper, I will have identified eight to ten useful inventions or contributions
that are used in the world today. Some of these inventions include the compass, gunpowder, row
planting, deep drilling, and toilet paper and so on. Within those eight to ten inventions, I will choose
four that I believe are the most innovative.
Row Planting (Feudal period 6th Cent BC)
The Chinese started planting crops in rows sometime in the 6th century BC. This allows the crops to
grow stronger and faster. It facilitates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It s assumed the discovery of occurred sometime earlier, since Zeng describes three different
gunpowder mixtures and the Chinese used it for signal flares before appropriating it for military use in
rudimentary grenades. Over time, we realized that metals added to the mixtures created brilliant colors
in gunpowder explosions and modern day fireworks were born! It also makes a handy explosive for
projectiles like bullets. (Josh Clark)
Paper
Once language begins to develop, though, humans wrote on anything that would stand still long
enough. Clay tablets, bamboo, papyrus and stone were only a few of the early writing surfaces. Things
changed once the Chinese, specifically a man named Cai Lun, invented the prototype for modern
paper. Before Cai s breakthrough, the Chinese wrote on thin strips of bamboo and lengths of silk, but
in AD 105, he created a mixture of wood fibers and water and pressed it onto a woven cloth. The
weave in the cloth allowed the moisture in the pulpy mixture to seep out, resulting in rough paper.
(Josh Clark)
Toilet Paper (Sui Dynasty: 581 618 AD) As noted above, paper was an early invention of China. One
of the first recorded accounts of using hygienic paper was

Constitutional Law
Constitutional law
The Mauritian Parliament has inherited much from the Westminster Model.
The Westminster Model is characterised by: * Parliamentary Sovereignty * Separation of Powers
between the organs of the State.
A. Parliamentary Sovereignty
In any state you will find one ultimate source of legal authority. In countries with a written
constitution, it will be the constitution which has ultimate authority as in Mauritius. In the United
Kingdom, with its uncodified constitution, ultimate law making power lies with Parliament, the House
of Commons, House of Lords and the Crown. As A.V. Dicey expressed it, parliamentary sovereignty
or supremacy, is the cornerstone of the constitution.
A.V. Dicey s analysis of sovereignty

In essence, Montesquieu states that the three organs of government the executive, legislature and
judiciary should each have a discrete and defined area of power and that there should be a clear
demarcation of functions between them: this is true separation of powers .
Under a written constitution, like Mauritius, the powers allocated to various institutions are clearly
defined. It should be noted that even under a written constitution a complete separation of powers is
not possible, and that without some degree of interaction between the institutions there would be
constitutional deadlock.
In Mauritius there is no strict separation of power between the executive and the legislative organs of
the State. Ministers are at the same time members of the executive and members of the legislature.
Structure of Parliament
In England, it is characterized by its bicameralism ie two houses of Parliament.
In Mauritius, there is a single chamber.
The Mauritian Parliament comprises of 70 Members
Section 31. Parliament of Mauritius
(2) The Assembly shall consist of persons elected in accordance with the First
Schedule, which makes provision for the election of 70 members
Functions of Parliament
The main functions of Parliament include the passing of legislation and the scrutiny of the
administration through debate,

Christine Jessop Case
The wrongful conviction of Guy Paul Morin in Canada for the murder of Christine Jessop in 1984 is
on record for legal history as evidence that prosecutions can mistake in any justice system. The
conviction of Guy Paul was based off of secondary evidence, contaminated evidence, unreliable
testimony and poor police work and it took advances in forensic science and DNA fingerprinting to
finally clear his name in 1995 (H2G2, 2013).The murderer of Christine Jessop has not yet been found
till this day, but there is still hope that further advances in forensic science will solve the mystery
eventually, so that justice will be served (H2G2, 2013). Initially this case all begun when Christine

Janet panicked and looked around the neighbourhood looking for any sign of her daughter, but found
nothing. It was only at about 8.00pm that same day that Janet called the York Regional Police (H2G2,

the neighbourhood for clues to Christine s disappearance and gathered evidence (H2G2, 2013). On
December 31st, 1984, the missing person case of Christine Jessop ended with the identification of her
body on Ravenshoe Road approximately 56km from her home (H2G2, 2013). The case was now a
murder investigation (H2G2, 2013). A coroner determined that her body had been lying in a ditch
beside the road for between three and four months (H2G2, 2013). Moreover, as per police
investigation Guy Paul Morin was the 23 year old next door neighbour of the Jessop family, who lived
with his parents (H2G2, 2013). His mother was interviewed by a police officer on the day of Christine
s disappearance. The police officer later stated that Guy Paul sat silently and looked straight ahead
during that time, which was considered to be suspicious behaviour (H2G2,

Christian Calling History
The history of Christianity, in the early years, reflected on the calling or the vocation. The term calling
was usually dedicated to a person called lead the people, i.e., a pastor or member or the clergy. This is
the time to be convinced that a professional call to ministry is a biblical concept. Paul supports this in
Eph. 4:11 12, And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some
pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.
In keeping with church history, our calling comes from the knowledge that we have of God and the
theology that we ascertain from Him. Church reformer, Martin Luther, was against the theology of
glory but was for the theology of the cross. GonzÄlez from, The Story of Christianity, of Luther, says,

In our calling, we should not get caught up with the idea of what the calling of God is for our lives.
For example, accepting the calling so that I can get certain perks that come with the calling, i.e., being
recognized as the minister, sitting up front during meetings, having an armor bearer, etc. Rather our
calling should always keep us focused on the cross of Christ and the revelation that it brings as we
seek after Him daily.
Ephesians 1:18 (New King James Version) shows us, the eyes of your understanding being
enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His
inheritance in the saints. Our calling should continually rest on understanding the mind of God and
where He is leading us in this walk with Him.
Throughout bible and church history, there were many that were called to do a specific task for God.
As I opened with Smith referring to Abraham, Moses, Isaiah, and Paul, I would like to take a moment
and reflect on the some of the bible heroes who were called to lead a people to the divine nature of

The Overpopulation Of The Ohio Valley
In the United States, about 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters every year. The
overpopulation of these animals and the fact that they have no homes leads to about 40% of them
being euthanized (ASPCA). This is a global issue, but the root of it can be found within the local
community at The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley.
The director of this animal shelter, Kelly Goedel, says that the cause of animal homelessness is
primarily the lack of spaying and neutering along with the lack of commitment that pet owners have to
their companion (Goedel). Spaying and neutering is sometimes avoided by pet owners because it is an
extra expense or they may feel as if it is unnecessary. This challenge leads to an excess in animal
populations without there necessarily being and increase in homes for these animals. The challenge of
overcoming pet overpopulation becomes even more difficult because of a lack of funding. According
to the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley, only about 20 percent of their funding comes from local
government (Goedel). Therefore, they are very reliant on donors and community funds to help finance
their organization. The funding issue circles back to complicate the process of getting homeless pets
spayed and neutered to attempt to solve the root cause of animal overpopulation.
The basis of our project was to raise funds and awareness for the HSOV. We wanted to reach out to as
many people as we could so we can spread the issue of the shelters.

Essay on Fear Eating Away at Gilbert Grape
Fear influences the way humans react and the actions that transpire. Some embrace the feeling of fear;
others try to overcome obstacles that fear creates. Sometimes, fear stimulates a strong response of self
isolation to shield one s mind from accepting emotion. The response, however, can manifest into an
extreme nature, creating the personality that Gilbert Grape exhibits. Peter Hedges clearly
communicates the fact that Gilbert underwent a transformation and his personality reflects the change.
The transformation not only causes Gilbert to become conflicted with expressing feelings, but he fears
the guilt of doing so as well. Gilbert struggles with the family controlling the opinions, emotions and
actions he makes. Peter Hedges ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gilbert cuts off the idea of protest immediately when the fear of judgment arises. He would rather
suffer in silence, than run the risk of rejection from his family. As What s Eating Gilbert Grape
progresses, readers see the drastic turn of Gilbert s fear into an extreme nature. With added frustration
and suppressed emotions prompted by his family, fear cripples Gilbert to an extreme point. As
previously mentioned, Gilbert is troubled with questioning his family and himself. However, the fear
has escalated into a dangerous state, where even the smallest questions trigger his fear of judgment.
Hedges writes, He doesn t want to answer your question, Amy. Oh, I do. Very Much I do, but... I fall
silent (Hedges, 121). Gilbert becomes so afraid of judgment that he cannot even answer a simple
question about his sister s ideas. Evidence proves that Gilbert progressed into that state due to the
crippling nature of fears. Again, Peter Gray writes, But in tasks that require creativity, new insights, or
learning, we do better when we are not being evaluated, so are not afraid of failure (Gray, 81). Gray
explains that people are able to inquire on ideas without being judged and when failure is eliminated.
Gilbert emulates Gray s analysis as he will only speak to himself, alone. Therefore, the family prompts
the fear and Gilbert reacts to it with an

An Analysis Of Jo March In Little Women By Louisa May Alcott
Gillian Jacobs, an American actress, once said I think there s a sort of satisfaction in defying people s
expectations (Jacobs 9). Jo March is a perfect example of how one can find vindication in not doing
what is expected of he or she. Jo March is a defiant character in the novel Little Women written by
Louisa May Alcott. This novel tells the story of four young sisters and their mother, from Concord,
Massachusetts, growing and maturing into ladies. The tight knit family struggles with living through
the years without their father because of the Civil War. During this time, women were expected to
follow certain rules. In fact, they were expected to feel ashamed if they did not follow these
guidelines. Throughout the novel, one can see how Jo March defies the traditional domestic role of a
women in her time period, the 19th century, by having a masculine personality and bringing in an
income for her family. The first example of how Josephine March goes against the traditional role of a
young women in this time period is her masculine personality. This attitude would stand out in this
time period because ladies were expected to wear big long dresses with their hair nicely done, and go
to events, such as balls, every weekend. Jo, however, is the exact opposite of that stereotype.
Josephine first shows signs of having a masculine personality when explaining that she would prefer if
everyone started calling her Jo, a nickname which is definitely more manly than Josephine

throughout the ad. First of all, the colors in advertisement evoke emotion and ideation in the customer

Also the color blue has an affect on the mind and body such as it invokes rest and makes people
typically feel calm. When a spill happens people tend to get to anger or upset over it, with the blue in
the advertisement it shows how the paper towel can reduce spills subconsciously. The green color

Weather In Life Of Pi
In literature, weather is a mechanism used to enhance and create mood. In the novel Life of Pi, it is
used successfully in this way. However, Yann Martel s use of weather in the story also portrays the
overwhelming commotion in Pi s subconscious as he undergoes 227 days at sea. The parallels between
the weather and Pi s journey of transcending his safety net, his normalcy, and his childhood are
evident throughout the novel. Weather is a representation of the wholehearted connection Pi has with

Allen Ginsberg Influences
Allen Ginsberg was one of the 20th century s most influential poets. He was viewed as one of the
founding fathers of the Beat Movement. He is also known for his works like Howl. Allen Ginsberg,
born Irwin Allen Ginsberg, was born on June 3, 1926 in Newark, New Jersey. His mother and father
was Naomi and Louis Ginsberg. His parents were members of the Jewish New York literary
counterculture of the 1920s. During this time, Ginsberg was raised in the midst of a number of
progressive political perspectives that would later influence how he viewed life as a whole and also
influence his work. Ginsberg s mother was a supporter of the Communist party. With that, she was a
nudist. Her mental health was a major issue all throughout Ginsberg s childhood. Because of this,
Ginsberg witnessed his mother s insanity first hand while growing up causing it to have a major
impact on his own views. Ginsberg also developed a certain sense of connection with people dealing
with such issues and was able to tolerate it at such a level. In his adolescent years, Ginsberg greatly
favored Walt Whitman. Because Ginsberg wanted to live out a childhood dream of getting in

Darwin s Theory Of Evolution
Michaelangelo Lipford

Theory of evolution
The theory of evolution by natural selection, first formulated in Darwin s book On the Origin of
Species in 1859. It is when an animal changes over time it changes its heritable physical or behavioral
traits. This happens so a species is better suited to live in an environment and to have more offspring.
Evolution by natural selection is one of the best substantiated theories in the history of science due to
is evidence from paleontology, geology, genetics, to developmental biology.
The theory has two main points, said Brian Richmond, curator of human origins at the American
Museum of Natural History in New York City. All life on Earth is connected and related ... Show more

It can happen many ways like a population to change color or size over the course of several
generations. This is called microevolution. But over time it can become bigger it can create new
species, known as macroevolution. Darwin did know anting about anything about genetics or how
much it effects it how things works. That came later, with the discovery of how genes encode different
biological or behavioral traits, and how genes are passed down from parents to offspring. The
incorporation of genetics and Darwin s theory is known as modern evolutionary synthesis. The way
physical and behavioral changes that make natural selection possible goes to DNA and genes. When it
changes its known as mutations. Mutations are basically the raw material on which evolution acts,
Pobiner said. Mutations can be caused by random errors in DNA replication or repair, or by chemical
or radiation damage. Most times, mutations are either harmful or neutral, but in rare instances, a
mutation might prove beneficial to the organism. If so, it will become more prevalent in the next
generation and spread throughout the population. So think of like spider man he was bit by a
radioactive spider and instead of getting cancer he changed for the better. (I am not condoning for you

For example, someone who is thinking of teen suicide most likely will not ask for help. People around
that person should realize the signs of a suicidal person and should get them help. That person most
likely does not want to die, they more or less just want to stop hurting, whether it be physical pain, or
mental pain. If other people take the signs of suicide seriously, that could lead to prevention of suicide.
If people openly talk to the person thinking about suicide, that action could save that person. Suicidal
people are normally in so much pain that they believe that killing themselves is the only way to escape
that pain, and go to a better place where they can be happy and not in pain. Each year, more than 1
million people die of suicide. Some things people should not do around a suicidal person however, are

Correlation Between Money Supply And Price Level For...
Darrat (1986) used the procedure recommended by Sargent (1976) to test the direction of causality
between money supply and price level for Morocco, Tunisia and Libya for the period from 1960Q1 to
1980Q2. This study found the unidirectional causality running from narrow money supply to price
level, which supported Monetarists view that money mattered price level. However, Parikh and
Starmer (1988) have explored the relationship between money supply and price level in Bangladesh
using the monthly data during the period 1973 1986 and found the unidirectional feedback running
from price to money. In this study, the strict exogeneity of money supply is rejected. The results of this
study has denied the Monetarists view but supports Structuralists view.
Similarly, the study of Ramchandran and Kamaiah (1992) has also noticed the uni directional causality
running from money supply to price level for the economy of India as in case of Darrat (1986). On the
other hand, the study of Aghevli and Khan (1978) for Brazil, Columbia, the Dominican Republic, and
Thailand, has found bidirectional causality between money and prices. Likewise, Maish and Maish

The Failed Prosecution Of O.j. Simpson
The Failed Prosecution of O.J. Simpson
In every case a prosecution should do what it takes to show that the defendant is guilty and bring
justice to their clients. This should always ring true but in the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson, and
Ron Goldman I continue to notice multiple flaws in the case. In the research conducted, I develop a
negative view of the individuals that put this case together. I believe there are six mistakes that occur
on the part of the prosecution, that lead to a Not Guilty verdict deciding the fate of one Orenthal James
Simpson.
To understand the evidence you must first understand what occurred in these murders. The O. J.
Simpson murder case (officially the People of the State of California v. Orenthal James Simpson) was
a criminal trial held at the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. The trial spanned from
the jury s swearing in on November 2, 1994, to opening statements on January 24, 1995, to a verdict
on October 3, 1995. The former professional football star and actor O. J. Simpson was tried on two
counts of murder after the deaths of his ex wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and waiter Ronald Lyle
Goldman, in June 1994 (Simpson). The case has been described as the most publicized criminal trial
in American history (USA Today) Simpson was acquitted after a trial that lasted more than eight

The Marketing Pl Paola Amador
III. THE MARKETING PLAN
1. SWOT ANALYSIS
In this section we will cover the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to the men s
swimwear line, which also sheds light on the reasons to why this option is chosen.
1.1. Strengths
Paola Amador is the first indigenous Mexican brand that will have the product line in men s
swimwear. Though there are other famous brands like Speedo and Nike that make men s swimwear,
their main focus is on sports outfits and clothing in general rather than trendy swimwear.
Since women in Guadalajara and other large cities in Mexico are already familiar with this brand, it
will be relatively easy for the company to enter the men s swimwear category. Women who know the
brand will recommend it to men in their family and friends circle. This will lead to word of mouth
marketing in the beginning and hence help create a positive customer perception immediately at the
introduction stage.
The company can use its existing production facilities for manufacturing women s swimwear in the
production of men s swimwear. The existing swimwear line for women are hand sewn in order to
ensure the highest level of comfort. The brand has a strong social media presence (which it uses as a
medium for selling), giving it a platform to better create awareness of the new product line.
1.2. Weaknesses
The brand symbolizes women s swimwear and hence, the designer may or may not be able to translate
her existing skills to the requirements of the men s fashion

experiences provides a clearer picture of their views, beliefs, feelings, and opinions. History is a story
told from a political and educational style. Learning how the past shaped a country and the leaders that
had a part in it helps us understand that country s ways and interactions with other countries.
The study of history influences our understanding of others and their culture. Like the quote If we don
t know from where we came, we don t know where we are going . Envisage a world where no one
knew anything about history; no documentation of any event, place or person. How would anyone be
able to 1) avoid repeating past mistakes. 2) know anything of those who came before and all of their
struggles, successes, and failures. By learning about history s participants and events, we can find a
source of inspiration from their courage, diligence and leadership styles.
One of the main reasons to study world history is to learn from and guard against past mistakes. Today
s military leaders should study not only their current enemy s war tactics and maneuvers but also those
of any others that took place in the area to provide context that helps equip an agile mind to make
informed decisions. Using the past actions, military leaders could anticipate their moves and

The Atomic Bombing Of Hiroshima
An Unnecessary Action The atomic bombing of Japan was an unjustified decision that many
considered was inhumane. Through the use of atomic bombs, many innocents were harmed in one
way or another. Berger described the atomic bombing of Hiroshima as a terrorist act and that it was
evil . While Berger s argument was extreme, the U.S. still remains unjustified because they did not
know exactly how much damage the bomb would actually cause. Bombing Japan, the U.S. harmed
thousands of civilians and displayed the effectiveness of the atomic bomb despite having other options
to end the war. By bombing Japan, many civilians were killed as a result of the U.S. s desire to use a
new weapon. Laurence describes the bomb as, a thing of beauty to behold and Never before had so
much brain power been focused on a single problem (11). This demonstrated how the U.S. saw Japan
as a problem that needed to be dealt with quickly and that the new and supposedly destructive weapon
was the best choice. While the targets, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, were both production areas ,they
were inhabited by a number of civilians. By choosing to drop the bomb, thousands were annihilated
and any survivors began to suffer from radiation sickness shortly after. Because of its destruction, the
U.S. believed the atomic bomb was a quick solution to the war. Although the atomic bomb was a new
and quick solution to the war, the U.S. could have chosen other options to finish it. As a result of
bombings

Dante s Inferno Research Paper
Dante s Inferno: One Man s Life and Hell Questioning the existence and form of an afterlife comes as
naturally to the human mind as thinking itself. Many religions attempt to answer the questions about
afterlife, but one could argue that no one answer is entirely correct. Dante Alighieri s Inferno is the
depiction of one man s Hell, which means that the form it takes is greatly affected by Dante s
personality and life. Dante Alighieri lived in 14th century Florence, Italy, and was a political writer
embroiled in a war between two families, the Guelphs and the Ghibellines. The Catholic Church was
riddled with corruption, and Dante was eventually exiled from Florence for the remainder of his life as
a result of the ongoing conflict. Despite ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Among the three classifications of sins which Dante identifies before his descent, the sins of Fraud are
found within the last two circles of Hell. Within the eighth circle, or the Malebolge, one finds
flatterers, seducers, fortune tellers, corrupt politicians, and others who falsify. These sinners receive no
pity from Dante, and are subjected to a plethora of miserable torments: suffering from diseases of the
senses, walking in circles donning leaden robes, being torn apart by snakes, and wallowing in
excrement, to name a few. Furthermore, the ninth circle contains the traitors, who broke the trust of
those they had special connections with. Among these are traitors to country, traitors to kin, and
traitors to masters. These sinners are sentenced to be frozen in ice at varying heights, with their bodies
disfigured and limbs mangled. These relentless and excruciating punishments show that Dante sees
the convolution of truth as unforgivable and worthy of eternal agony. Dante s politically charged life
also influences his Hell. Facing corruption in the Catholic Church and warring families, many
important political and religious figures appear in the lower circles of Inferno. Though this
background of deceit and betrayal carries great significance to Dante s life, one could argue that Dante
abhorred those who only served themselves the most of all

Argumentative Essay On Euthanasia
The issue of euthanasia occupies an essential place among many legal, medical, religious and other
problems. The phenomenon itself is a subject for reflection of public consciousness since human life
today is the primary value for the world society. The issue has acquired another way of demand
because, about all legal and moral realities, the right to life brings it to the level of universal and
global challenges of our time. Advances in modern medicine have changed the attitude towards death
as a one stage phenomenon, doctors today can support the life of patients even in the gravest
condition, not allowing him or her to die. For this reason, the previously used criteria for determining
a person s death came into conflict with its new scientific understanding, and the role of euthanasia
discusses the considerable controversy. At the same time, euthanasia is gaining momentum, as every
year several thousand people go to another world with the voluntary consent and assistance of doctors
and a real euthanasia applied to children and people with questionable testimonies for the termination
of life. Therefore, the question of euthanasia today is acuter than ever, complicated not only for
reasons of rationale and humanity but also from a religious point of view.
The right to die is known since ancient times. The word Euthanasia came from the Greeks which
means good death. In the 5th Century B.C before Christianity, suicide, infant homicide, and active
euthanasia were all

Romeo And Juliet Rhetorical Analysis
In Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare uses oxymora to help describe complicated human emotions. People
can have two opposing emotions such as love and hate. This is accuratly protrayed throughout the play
but mostly with the character of Juliet. For example Juliet uses the oxymoron fiend angelical in her
speech. This oxymoron means devil angle. Representing the fact that Juliet is struggling with her
interpation of Romeo character after he killed Tybalt. She thinks he may have the same traits as the
devil such as cruelness and wickedness. But her love for him makes her find it hard to belive that that
can be possible. She thinks of an angle in their love. Pure and happy is what she sees him as and
subconciously wishes he was.

Essay on Late Adulthood
The Bucket List
Movie Review
Rhea F. Dahilig
PSYCH 320
4/15/2010
FOREWORD
The journey through late adulthood can be experienced in different ways. One particular movie
entitled The Bucket List exhibits an astounding portrayal of late adulthood. In fact, there are many
accounts that the movie entails about late adulthood. This includes the illustration of Erickson s late
adulthood stage Ego Integrity vs. Despair, wisdom, marriage, friendship, parent child relationship, and
death and dying in late adulthood.
Having given less than a year to live because of cancer, the two characters Edward Cole and Carter
Chambers seem to deal with despair rather than integrity, a stage Erickson depicts for late adulthood
based on his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe both characters are wise in their own way. Edward is wise in the business world, where he
states that Presidents have asked for his advice and have dined with royalties all due to his well
renowened wisdom in that category being that he s been around that business since the age of 16.
Carter, especially, is wise in life lessons. He mentioned numerous words of wisdom throughout the
movie and amongst them, my favorite was, I believe that you measure yourself by the people who
measure themselves by you. For me though, one does not have to be in the late adulthood stage to be
wise. I believe that, we, as humans, already have an innate ability of wisdom and is only strengthened
through time and experiences that we acquire along the way. Another highlight obtained in the movie
is the depiction of married couples in late adulthood. It seems to me that I have to agree with the
statement that married couples in their late adulthoods are more satisfied than middle aged couples
because, with time they are bounded with commitment and respect; overcoming the hurdles in life
together longer, growing stronger from it each time. For Carter, he appears to be happily married with
his wife, Virginia, because of the effort, support, concern and commitment that Virginia shows to care
for Carter in his times of need and I am sure Carter would do the same if Virginia was in his place.
Hence, Carter s view of marriage with respect, loyalty and faithfulness, in which he practiced

Sqlite Essay
SQLite is an Open Source database. SQLite supports standard relational database features like SQL
syntax, transactions and prepared statements. The database requires limited memory at runtime
(approx. 250 KByte) which makes it a good candidate from being embedded into other runtimes.
SQLite supports the data types TEXT (similar to String in Java), INTEGER (similar to long in Java)
and REAL (similar to double in Java). All other types must be converted into one of these fields
before getting saved in the database. SQLite itself does not validate if the types written to the columns
are actually of the defined type, e.g. you can write an integer into a string column and vice versa.

Other more familiar database engines run great once you get them going. But doing the initial
installation and configuration can be intimidatingly complex.
Server less
Most SQL database engines are implemented as a separate server process. Programs that want to
access the database communicate with the server using some kind of interprocess communication
(typically TCP/IP) to send requests to the server and to receive back results. SQLite does not work this
way. With SQLite, the process that wants to access the database reads and writes directly from the
database files on disk. There is no intermediary server process. There are advantages and
disadvantages to being server less. The main advantage is that there is no separate server process to
install, setup, configure, initialize, manage, and troubleshoot. This is one reason why SQLite is a zero
configuration database engine. Programs that use SQLite require no administrative support for setting
up the database engine before they are run. Any program that is able to access the disk is able to use
an SQLite database.
On the other hand, a database engine that uses a server can provide better protection from bugs in the
client application stray pointers in a client cannot corrupt memory on the server. And because a server
is a single persistent process, it is able control database access with more precision, allowing for finer
grain locking and better concurrency.

The Controversy Of Cloning And Genetic Engineering Essay
Introduction
God and Nature first made us what we are, and then out of our own created genius we make ourselves
what we want to be... Let the sky and God be our limit and Eternity our measurement Marcus Garvey
(1887 1940).
Cloning and genetically modifying humans is now more attainable than ever due to strides made by
science. With a relatively short history, cloning and genetic engineering have been a new concept for
many people in society with the first proof of cloning being dolly the sheep, the first successful clone
born by the somatic cell nuclear transfer procedure [1]. Cloning over the years has evolved and now
could be used to someday help people requiring organ transplants, recover from traumatic injuries and
aid infertile couples with its reproductive possibilities [4].
On the other hand, genetic engineering can also be a great benefit as through gene therapy, genetic
diseases can be prevented and quite possibly being wiped from existence. Another benefit of genetic
engineering is that it can also allow infertile couples to have a baby but to do this would require the
genetic information of a surrogate alongside the couple s genetic information [12]. This could result in
many complications which is why there is a great controversy on this matter. Although cloning is
known by a plethora of people, whereas the minority of the population knows of genetic engineering
which brings up the question, what is genetic engineering?
Simply put, genetic engineering is the

At a young age, Desmond Tutu got tuberculosis, a serious, life threatening sickness. Treatment would
be painful, but luckily doctors detected it early so he had a plan for recovery. All throughout this near

Huddleston, the priest who inspired him initially. After a grueling time in the hospital, Desmond Tutu
was released from the hospital at 16 (Crompton 14 16). While many may call this an unlucky mishap,
Desmond Tutu came out of the experience grateful, and appreciating life much more than had he not
gone through pain. Desmond Tutu s experience with pain is hopeful and inspiring in the fact that it
actually changed himself for the better. It resonated with me personally because I always thought that
pain was a bad thing and that it should be avoided at all costs. But after reading about Desmond

The Rocking Horse Winner by D.H. Lawrence Essay
With a household comes the responsibilities of maintaining a happy and stable family. The duty of
having a secure family involves financial security, which ensures a household has enough to eat, stays
properly nursed, and clothed. The level of happiness relies on the dynamics of the family itself, such
as how supportive and attentive a family is to one another, but often times happiness is blindsided by
money. Financial security and happiness can be confused and overshadowed by the aspiration of
money and consumerism. Families provide their household s financial needs, but neglect the
emotional aspects. The overpowering need for money takes a toll on families. D.H Lawrence s short

The psychological effect, obsession, literally drives Paul insane. Money consumes his young mind and
overtakes him, leaving his newly rich family with the devastation of a dead child. Although money
can bring material items, it does not bring happiness, instead is brings the family anxiety. Anxiety is
described as, distress or uneasiness of mind caused by fear of danger or misfortune (dictonary.com).
The mother, Hester, is described as anxious throughout the story, [Paul s] mother had sudden strange
seizures of uneasiness... sometimes for half an hour, she would feel a sudden anxiety (Lawrence 47).
The mother s desire for money is the cause of her mental anxiety, and anxiety attacks. Even after
receiving Paul s anonymous winning she remains unsatisfied, making it evident that there is no end to
the desire of money. Hester s want for money brings her to state of depression. Depression is defined

The American Legal System Of The United States
The American Legal System
Desiree Brown
Kaplan University
The American Legal System
In the American legal system there are two different areas of government, federal and state; it is called
federalism. Together they work to enforce the laws of the United States. Each court system, however,
is divided into many different layers. The federal courts have limited jurisdiction as opposed to the
state courts that are of general jurisdiction. Federal and state governments are both divided into three
different branches, the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. The written constitutions of the
two courts form a system of separate power and checks and balances between the branches.
The federal courts work completely different from the state courts. The federal system is divided into
three main levels, the district courts, the circuit courts, and the supreme court of The United States.
The main difference for civil cases versus criminal cases is the type of cases that are actually able to
be heard within this court system. These courts can only handle cases that have been authorized by the
United States Constitution or federal statutes, giving them limited jurisdiction. The federal court is the
beginning for any case that rises under federal statutes, treaties, or The Constitution. (Introduction to
the Federal Court System, n.d.) The district courts are basically the trial courts. They consist of one

The Effect Of Nitrous Oxide On The Environment Of New...
1. Introduction
1.1 Background and rationale for this study
Nitrous oxide is an important green house gas. The global warming potential for nitrous oxide is 298
times higher than that of carbon dioxide over a 100 year time horizon (Ravishankara, Daniel and
Portmann, 2009). Nitrous oxide is also contributing the third largest radiative forcing globally
(Oenema et al., 1997). With the recent emphasis on control of global warming, ways to reduce nitrous
oxide are highly sought.
Natural sources account for 62% of total nitrous oxide emission globally. Apart from natural sources,
nitrous oxide can also be emitted from anthropogenic activities include: agriculture, industrial, fuel
and biomass combustion, and sewage treatment (Sutton et al., 2014; Scheehle and Kruger, 2006; Tsai
and Chyan, 2006). Among all sources, agriculture contributes the largest proportion (60%) around the
world in recent years (IPCC Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 2008).
Agriculture is largely influencing economy and society of New Zealand and agricultural based
products accounts for 53% of the whole merchandise exports (MacLeod and Moller, 2006). In 2007,
agricultural land use represented 54.8% of total land area across New Zealand (Statistics New
Zealand, 2008). Seeking for ways to reduce nitrous oxide emission for New Zealand is extremely
important.
The use of carbon based sorbent, which is relatively cheap and with large surface area, to reduce
nitrous oxide emission has been studied for

How did the Reformation affect German society in the 16th and 17th centuries?
Part A: Identification and Evaluation of Sources
This report will explore how did the Reformation affect German society in the 16th and 17th
centuries. The Reformation took place mainly during the 16th century and many things resulted from
that. It was a big turning point for society when everything was changing with the politics, education
received, and religion people had. This started when the power of the church was beginning to break
and the Church had an enormous amount of power over people before the Reformation. The research

reformation had on German society. Dr. Jack L. Arnold s writes The Cause and Results of the

The most horrible example was when someone who was different was banished from there

Norms.
Intolerance, surprisingly enough, was also practiced in the fringes. The people who lived in the fringes
were intolerant towards the people of Waknuk. They felt anyone without a type of mutation or
difference was inferior to them. An example of this is when Rosalind is fleeing the town with all the
ESP children. Rosalind still had a cross on her dress from Waknuk, which was a sign that she was a

the people of the Fringes part.
The people from Sealand or New Zealand were also guilty of intolerance. All the people who lived
there had ESP; they could read each others mind to a certain degree. Because of this they have a sense

different ways. One, as beautiful creatures able to draw in anyone without saying a word, who will do
no harm to humans; some go as far as saying they will help humans. The other, as evil conniving
creatures, eager to lead men to their deaths. If we use the tools Carl Sagan has given us in his Baloney
Detection Toolkit, we can easily debunk the idea of mermaids. Right away applying the idea of
inconsistency is easy to do. Inconsistency is when

  • 2. Ancient Chinese Contributions Ancient Chinese Contributions Kenneth Smith Professor Maxine Brown HUM 111 World Cultures I November 29, 2012 The Ancient Chinese culture has contributed in many ways to the way of life today as we know it. Upon completion of this paper, I will have identified eight to ten useful inventions or contributions that are used in the world today. Some of these inventions include the compass, gunpowder, row planting, deep drilling, and toilet paper and so on. Within those eight to ten inventions, I will choose four that I believe are the most innovative. Row Planting (Feudal period 6th Cent BC) The Chinese started planting crops in rows sometime in the 6th century BC. This allows the crops to grow stronger and faster. It facilitates ... It s assumed the discovery of occurred sometime earlier, since Zeng describes three different gunpowder mixtures and the Chinese used it for signal flares before appropriating it for military use in rudimentary grenades. Over time, we realized that metals added to the mixtures created brilliant colors in gunpowder explosions and modern day fireworks were born! It also makes a handy explosive for projectiles like bullets. (Josh Clark) Paper Once language begins to develop, though, humans wrote on anything that would stand still long enough. Clay tablets, bamboo, papyrus and stone were only a few of the early writing surfaces. Things changed once the Chinese, specifically a man named Cai Lun, invented the prototype for modern paper. Before Cai s breakthrough, the Chinese wrote on thin strips of bamboo and lengths of silk, but in AD 105, he created a mixture of wood fibers and water and pressed it onto a woven cloth. The weave in the cloth allowed the moisture in the pulpy mixture to seep out, resulting in rough paper. (Josh Clark) Toilet Paper (Sui Dynasty: 581 618 AD) As noted above, paper was an early invention of China. One of the first recorded accounts of using hygienic paper was ... The Westminster Model is characterised by: * Parliamentary Sovereignty * Separation of Powers between the organs of the State. A. Parliamentary Sovereignty In any state you will find one ultimate source of legal authority. In countries with a written constitution, it will be the constitution which has ultimate authority as in Mauritius. In the United Kingdom, with its uncodified constitution, ultimate law making power lies with Parliament, the House of Commons, House of Lords and the Crown. As A.V. In essence, Montesquieu states that the three organs of government the executive, legislature and judiciary should each have a discrete and defined area of power and that there should be a clear demarcation of functions between them: this is true separation of powers . Under a written constitution, like Mauritius, the powers allocated to various institutions are clearly defined. It should be noted that even under a written constitution a complete separation of powers is not possible, and that without some degree of interaction between the institutions there would be constitutional deadlock. In Mauritius there is no strict separation of power between the executive and the legislative organs of the State. Ministers are at the same time members of the executive and members of the legislature. Structure of Parliament In England, it is characterized by its bicameralism ie two houses of Parliament. In Mauritius, there is a single chamber. The Mauritian Parliament comprises of 70 Members Section 31. • 4. Christine Jessop Case The wrongful conviction of Guy Paul Morin in Canada for the murder of Christine Jessop in 1984 is on record for legal history as evidence that prosecutions can mistake in any justice system. The conviction of Guy Paul was based off of secondary evidence, contaminated evidence, unreliable testimony and poor police work and it took advances in forensic science and DNA fingerprinting to finally clear his name in 1995 (H2G2, 2013).The murderer of Christine Jessop has not yet been found till this day, but there is still hope that further advances in forensic science will solve the mystery eventually, so that justice will be served (H2G2, 2013). Janet panicked and looked around the neighbourhood looking for any sign of her daughter, but found nothing. It was only at about 8.00pm that same day that Janet called the York Regional Police (H2G2, 2013). Minutes later, a police investigation team was sent to the Jessop residence. The police searched the neighbourhood for clues to Christine s disappearance and gathered evidence (H2G2, 2013). On December 31st, 1984, the missing person case of Christine Jessop ended with the identification of her body on Ravenshoe Road approximately 56km from her home (H2G2, 2013). • 5. Christian Calling History The history of Christianity, in the early years, reflected on the calling or the vocation. The term calling was usually dedicated to a person called lead the people, i.e., a pastor or member or the clergy. This is the time to be convinced that a professional call to ministry is a biblical concept. Paul supports this in Eph. 4:11 12, And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ. In keeping with church history, our calling comes from the knowledge that we have of God and the theology that we ascertain from Him. Church reformer, Martin Luther, was against the theology of glory but was for the theology of the cross. GonzĂ„lez from, The Story of Christianity, of Luther, says, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In our calling, we should not get caught up with the idea of what the calling of God is for our lives. For example, accepting the calling so that I can get certain perks that come with the calling, i.e., being recognized as the minister, sitting up front during meetings, having an armor bearer, etc. Rather our calling should always keep us focused on the cross of Christ and the revelation that it brings as we seek after Him daily. Ephesians 1:18 (New King James Version) shows us, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints. Our calling should continually rest on understanding the mind of God and where He is leading us in this walk with Him. Throughout bible and church history, there were many that were called to do a specific task for God. As I opened with Smith referring to Abraham, Moses, Isaiah, and Paul, I would like to take a moment and reflect on the some of the bible heroes who were called to lead a people to the divine nature of ... • 8. The Overpopulation Of The Ohio Valley In the United States, about 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters every year. The overpopulation of these animals and the fact that they have no homes leads to about 40% of them being euthanized (ASPCA). This is a global issue, but the root of it can be found within the local community at The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley. The director of this animal shelter, Kelly Goedel, says that the cause of animal homelessness is primarily the lack of spaying and neutering along with the lack of commitment that pet owners have to their companion (Goedel). Spaying and neutering is sometimes avoided by pet owners because it is an extra expense or they may feel as if it is unnecessary. This challenge leads to an excess in animal populations without there necessarily being and increase in homes for these animals. The challenge of overcoming pet overpopulation becomes even more difficult because of a lack of funding. According to the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley, only about 20 percent of their funding comes from local government (Goedel). Therefore, they are very reliant on donors and community funds to help finance their organization. The funding issue circles back to complicate the process of getting homeless pets spayed and neutered to attempt to solve the root cause of animal overpopulation. The basis of our project was to raise funds and awareness for the HSOV. We wanted to reach out to as many people as we could so we can spread the issue of the shelters. ... • 10. Essay on Fear Eating Away at Gilbert Grape Fear influences the way humans react and the actions that transpire. Some embrace the feeling of fear; others try to overcome obstacles that fear creates. Sometimes, fear stimulates a strong response of self isolation to shield one s mind from accepting emotion. The response, however, can manifest into an extreme nature, creating the personality that Gilbert Grape exhibits. Peter Hedges clearly communicates the fact that Gilbert underwent a transformation and his personality reflects the change. The transformation not only causes Gilbert to become conflicted with expressing feelings, but he fears the guilt of doing so as well. Gilbert struggles with the family controlling the opinions, emotions and actions he makes. Peter Hedges ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gilbert cuts off the idea of protest immediately when the fear of judgment arises. He would rather suffer in silence, than run the risk of rejection from his family. As What s Eating Gilbert Grape progresses, readers see the drastic turn of Gilbert s fear into an extreme nature. With added frustration and suppressed emotions prompted by his family, fear cripples Gilbert to an extreme point. As previously mentioned, Gilbert is troubled with questioning his family and himself. However, the fear has escalated into a dangerous state, where even the smallest questions trigger his fear of judgment. Hedges writes, He doesn t want to answer your question, Amy. Oh, I do. Very Much I do, but... I fall silent (Hedges, 121). Gilbert becomes so afraid of judgment that he cannot even answer a simple question about his sister s ideas. Evidence proves that Gilbert progressed into that state due to the crippling nature of fears. Again, Peter Gray writes, But in tasks that require creativity, new insights, or learning, we do better when we are not being evaluated, so are not afraid of failure (Gray, 81). Gray explains that people are able to inquire on ideas without being judged and when failure is eliminated. Gilbert emulates Gray s analysis as he will only speak to himself, alone. Therefore, the family prompts the fear and Gilbert reacts to it with an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. An Analysis Of Jo March In Little Women By Louisa May Alcott Gillian Jacobs, an American actress, once said I think there s a sort of satisfaction in defying people s expectations (Jacobs 9). Jo March is a perfect example of how one can find vindication in not doing what is expected of he or she. Jo March is a defiant character in the novel Little Women written by Louisa May Alcott. This novel tells the story of four young sisters and their mother, from Concord, Massachusetts, growing and maturing into ladies. The tight knit family struggles with living through the years without their father because of the Civil War. During this time, women were expected to follow certain rules. In fact, they were expected to feel ashamed if they did not follow these guidelines. Throughout the novel, one can see how Jo March defies the traditional domestic role of a women in her time period, the 19th century, by having a masculine personality and bringing in an income for her family. The first example of how Josephine March goes against the traditional role of a young women in this time period is her masculine personality. This attitude would stand out in this time period because ladies were expected to wear big long dresses with their hair nicely done, and go to events, such as balls, every weekend. Jo, however, is the exact opposite of that stereotype. Josephine first shows signs of having a masculine personality when explaining that she would prefer if everyone started calling her Jo, a nickname which is definitely more manly than Josephine ... It is when an animal changes over time it changes its heritable physical or behavioral traits. This happens so a species is better suited to live in an environment and to have more offspring. Evolution by natural selection is one of the best substantiated theories in the history of science due to is evidence from paleontology, geology, genetics, to developmental biology. The theory has two main points, said Brian Richmond, curator of human origins at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. All life on Earth is connected and related ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It can happen many ways like a population to change color or size over the course of several generations. This is called microevolution. But over time it can become bigger it can create new species, known as macroevolution. Darwin did know anting about anything about genetics or how much it effects it how things works. That came later, with the discovery of how genes encode different biological or behavioral traits, and how genes are passed down from parents to offspring. The incorporation of genetics and Darwin s theory is known as modern evolutionary synthesis. The way physical and behavioral changes that make natural selection possible goes to DNA and genes. When it changes its known as mutations. Mutations are basically the raw material on which evolution acts, Pobiner said. Mutations can be caused by random errors in DNA replication or repair, or by chemical or radiation damage. Most times, mutations are either harmful or neutral, but in rare instances, a mutation might prove beneficial to the organism. If so, it will become more prevalent in the next generation and spread throughout the population. This should always ring true but in the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ron Goldman I continue to notice multiple flaws in the case. In the research conducted, I develop a negative view of the individuals that put this case together. I believe there are six mistakes that occur on the part of the prosecution, that lead to a Not Guilty verdict deciding the fate of one Orenthal James Simpson. To understand the evidence you must first understand what occurred in these murders. The O. J. Simpson murder case (officially the People of the State of California v. Strengths Paola Amador is the first indigenous Mexican brand that will have the product line in men s swimwear. Though there are other famous brands like Speedo and Nike that make men s swimwear, their main focus is on sports outfits and clothing in general rather than trendy swimwear. Since women in Guadalajara and other large cities in Mexico are already familiar with this brand, it will be relatively easy for the company to enter the men s swimwear category. Women who know the brand will recommend it to men in their family and friends circle. This will lead to word of mouth marketing in the beginning and hence help create a positive customer perception immediately at the introduction stage. The company can use its existing production facilities for manufacturing women s swimwear in the production of men s swimwear. The existing swimwear line for women are hand sewn in order to ensure the highest level of comfort. The brand has a strong social media presence (which it uses as a medium for selling), giving it a platform to better create awareness of the new product line. 1.2. Vietnam s History and the Twentieth Century It is both necessary and helpful to study the context of prior history because it reveals who we are in relation to other people, cultures, and countries. Exploring the history of different peoples and cultures experiences provides a clearer picture of their views, beliefs, feelings, and opinions. History is a story told from a political and educational style. Learning how the past shaped a country and the leaders that had a part in it helps us understand that country s ways and interactions with other countries. The study of history influences our understanding of others and their culture. Like the quote If we don t know from where we came, we don t know where we are going . How would anyone be able to 1) avoid repeating past mistakes. 2) know anything of those who came before and all of their struggles, successes, and failures. By learning about history s participants and events, we can find a source of inspiration from their courage, diligence and leadership styles. One of the main reasons to study world history is to learn from and guard against past mistakes. Through the use of atomic bombs, many innocents were harmed in one way or another. Berger described the atomic bombing of Hiroshima as a terrorist act and that it was evil . While Berger s argument was extreme, the U.S. still remains unjustified because they did not know exactly how much damage the bomb would actually cause. Bombing Japan, the U.S. harmed thousands of civilians and displayed the effectiveness of the atomic bomb despite having other options to end the war. By bombing Japan, many civilians were killed as a result of the U.S. s desire to use a new weapon. Laurence describes the bomb as, a thing of beauty to behold and Never before had so much brain power been focused on a single problem (11). This demonstrated how the U.S. saw Japan as a problem that needed to be dealt with quickly and that the new and supposedly destructive weapon was the best choice. While the targets, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, were both production areas ,they were inhabited by a number of civilians. By choosing to drop the bomb, thousands were annihilated and any survivors began to suffer from radiation sickness shortly after. These sinners are sentenced to be frozen in ice at varying heights, with their bodies disfigured and limbs mangled. These relentless and excruciating punishments show that Dante sees the convolution of truth as unforgivable and worthy of eternal agony. Dante s politically charged life also influences his Hell. The phenomenon itself is a subject for reflection of public consciousness since human life today is the primary value for the world society. The issue has acquired another way of demand because, about all legal and moral realities, the right to life brings it to the level of universal and global challenges of our time. Advances in modern medicine have changed the attitude towards death as a one stage phenomenon, doctors today can support the life of patients even in the gravest condition, not allowing him or her to die. For this reason, the previously used criteria for determining a person s death came into conflict with its new scientific understanding, and the role of euthanasia discusses the considerable controversy. At the same time, euthanasia is gaining momentum, as every year several thousand people go to another world with the voluntary consent and assistance of doctors and a real euthanasia applied to children and people with questionable testimonies for the termination of life. Therefore, the question of euthanasia today is acuter than ever, complicated not only for reasons of rationale and humanity but also from a religious point of view. One particular movie entitled The Bucket List exhibits an astounding portrayal of late adulthood. In fact, there are many accounts that the movie entails about late adulthood. This includes the illustration of Erickson s late adulthood stage Ego Integrity vs. Despair, wisdom, marriage, friendship, parent child relationship, and death and dying in late adulthood. Edward is wise in the business world, where he states that Presidents have asked for his advice and have dined with royalties all due to his well renowened wisdom in that category being that he s been around that business since the age of 16. Carter, especially, is wise in life lessons. He mentioned numerous words of wisdom throughout the movie and amongst them, my favorite was, I believe that you measure yourself by the people who measure themselves by you. For me though, one does not have to be in the late adulthood stage to be wise. I believe that, we, as humans, already have an innate ability of wisdom and is only strengthened through time and experiences that we acquire along the way. Another highlight obtained in the movie is the depiction of married couples in late adulthood. It seems to me that I have to agree with the statement that married couples in their late adulthoods are more satisfied than middle aged couples because, with time they are bounded with commitment and respect; overcoming the hurdles in life together longer, growing stronger from it each time. For Carter, he appears to be happily married with his wife, Virginia, because of the effort, support, concern and commitment that Virginia shows to care for Carter in his times of need and I am sure Carter would do the same if Virginia was in his place. Hence, Carter s view of marriage with respect, loyalty and faithfulness, in which he practiced ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Let the sky and God be our limit and Eternity our measurement Marcus Garvey (1887 1940). Cloning and genetically modifying humans is now more attainable than ever due to strides made by science. With a relatively short history, cloning and genetic engineering have been a new concept for many people in society with the first proof of cloning being dolly the sheep, the first successful clone born by the somatic cell nuclear transfer procedure [1]. Cloning over the years has evolved and now could be used to someday help people requiring organ transplants, recover from traumatic injuries and aid infertile couples with its reproductive possibilities [4]. On the other hand, genetic engineering can also be a great benefit as through gene therapy, genetic diseases can be prevented and quite possibly being wiped from existence. Another benefit of genetic engineering is that it can also allow infertile couples to have a baby but to do this would require the genetic information of a surrogate alongside the couple s genetic information [12]. This could result in many complications which is why there is a great controversy on this matter. Financial security and happiness can be confused and overshadowed by the aspiration of money and consumerism. Families provide their household s financial needs, but neglect the emotional aspects. The overpowering need for money takes a toll on families. D.H Lawrence s short story explores the dynamics of money and its psychological ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 37. The American Legal System Of The United States The American Legal System Desiree Brown Kaplan University The American Legal System In the American legal system there are two different areas of government, federal and state; it is called federalism. Together they work to enforce the laws of the United States. Each court system, however, is divided into many different layers. The federal courts have limited jurisdiction as opposed to the state courts that are of general jurisdiction. Federal and state governments are both divided into three different branches, the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. The written constitutions of the two courts form a system of separate power and checks and balances between the branches. The federal courts work completely different from the state courts. The federal system is divided into three main levels, the district courts, the circuit courts, and the supreme court of The United States. The main difference for civil cases versus criminal cases is the type of cases that are actually able to be heard within this court system. These courts can only handle cases that have been authorized by the United States Constitution or federal statutes, giving them limited jurisdiction. The federal court is the beginning for any case that rises under federal statutes, treaties, or The Constitution. (Introduction to the Federal Court System, n.d.) The district courts are basically the trial courts. They consist of one United States district judge who is appointed by the president and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Effect Of Nitrous Oxide On The Environment Of New... 1. Introduction 1.1 Background and rationale for this study Nitrous oxide is an important green house gas. The global warming potential for nitrous oxide is 298 times higher than that of carbon dioxide over a 100 year time horizon (Ravishankara, Daniel and Portmann, 2009). Nitrous oxide is also contributing the third largest radiative forcing globally (Oenema et al., 1997). With the recent emphasis on control of global warming, ways to reduce nitrous oxide are highly sought. Natural sources account for 62% of total nitrous oxide emission globally. Apart from natural sources, nitrous oxide can also be emitted from anthropogenic activities include: agriculture, industrial, fuel and biomass combustion, and sewage treatment (Sutton et al., 2014; Scheehle and Kruger, 2006; Tsai and Chyan, 2006). Among all sources, agriculture contributes the largest proportion (60%) around the world in recent years (IPCC Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 2008). Agriculture is largely influencing economy and society of New Zealand and agricultural based products accounts for 53% of the whole merchandise exports (MacLeod and Moller, 2006). In 2007, agricultural land use represented 54.8% of total land area across New Zealand (Statistics New Zealand, 2008). Seeking for ways to reduce nitrous oxide emission for New Zealand is extremely important. The use of carbon based sorbent, which is relatively cheap and with large surface area, to reduce nitrous oxide emission has been studied for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 40. Reformation Affect German Society In The 16th And 17th... How did the Reformation affect German society in the 16th and 17th centuries? Part A: Identification and Evaluation of Sources This report will explore how did the Reformation affect German society in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Reformation took place mainly during the 16th century and many things resulted from that. It was a big turning point for society when everything was changing with the politics, education received, and religion people had. This started when the power of the church was beginning to break and the Church had an enormous amount of power over people before the Reformation. The research done for this essay was based off primary and secondary sources that discuss the effects the reformation had on German society. Dr. Jack L. Arnold s writes The Cause and Results of the Reformation , which described several general effects the Reformation had on society. Karen E. • 41. Intolerance in the Chrysalids by John Wyndham Essay Intolerance in the Chrysalids by John Wyndham The Chrysalids was by John Wyndham. It Involves Children that have ESP (Extra Sensory Perception) living in a community that does not tolerate differences. They are eventually found out and escape to Sealand (New Zealand). All societies in this novel practice intolerance in one way or another, even though Wyndham doesn t approve of it. We see it with the Norms, the Fringes, the Sealanders and even people of today. I feel this was a great way of depicting intolerance. Intolerance is most visible in this novel with the Waknuk civilization. You could also say that the Strorm family is one of the most intolerable families there. David didn t have a lot of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most horrible example was when someone who was different was banished from there community to the fringes. You would think they would have toned it down a little bit after David s aunt committed suicide; she committed suicide because she gave birth to mutant baby, and did not want to be found out. This is horrible example of the intolerant nature of the Norms. Intolerance, surprisingly enough, was also practiced in the fringes. The people who lived in the fringes were intolerant towards the people of Waknuk. They felt anyone without a type of mutation or difference was inferior to them. An example of this is when Rosalind is fleeing the town with all the ESP children. Rosalind still had a cross on her dress from Waknuk, which was a sign that she was a true human , and was only worn by the norms. Because she had ESP she wasn t considered a true human . W hen they were running away Sophie told Rosalind that if anyone from the Fringes saw that cross they would reject her; this is because they reject the norms. This is an example of intolerance on the people of the Fringes part. The people from Sealand or New Zealand were also guilty of intolerance. All the people who lived there had ESP; they could read each others mind to a certain degree. Because of this they have a sense of arrogance about there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Inconsistency In Mermaids Mermaids, half human half fish, have been the subject of sailors fishtails for hundreds of years. Obviously the idea of mermaids is nothing but mythology, nevertheless, you still find people trying to prove the existence of these mythical beings. Popular culture has depicted mermaids in two drastically different ways. One, as beautiful creatures able to draw in anyone without saying a word, who will do no harm to humans; some go as far as saying they will help humans. The other, as evil conniving creatures, eager to lead men to their deaths. If we use the tools Carl Sagan has given us in his Baloney Detection Toolkit, we can easily debunk the idea of mermaids. Right away applying the idea of inconsistency is easy to do. Inconsistency is when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
