1. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL
GROUPS?
Evaluation Question 2
2. SUB GENRES
A sub genre is
defined as a
subdivision of a
genre of literature,
music, film, etc.
3. SUB GENRES
• My magazine is found in the unique genre of
soundtracks and film music which is a niche
market.
• However many theme songs and the artists who
preform them are also found on Billboard and
the UK music charts so the magazine would
touch many different subgenres including: pop,
rock, alternative.
4. AREAS OF SOCIETY TARGETED
• My magazine is targeted at people aged 16 and over, the majority of people
who see films are young adults, this is a group who are also huge consumers of
music. It is targeted at people who spend lots of time listening to music, who
like discovering new popular artists and who like going to concerts and
festivals.
• My magazine targets people who enjoy soundtracks and film music, this is a
broad audience. I think the aim of my magazine is to remain open to people
from all subcultures.
• A subculture is a cultural group within a larger culture, often having beliefs or
interests at variance with those of the larger culture. Examples of subcultures
include: metal heads, goths, hipsters, chavs.
• The magazine keeps somewhat of a monochrome colour scheme but still has
an underlying dark theme to it with the cityscape backgrounds which may
appeal and represent a goth subculture. However the design is very unique
and there is a sense of cool to it within it’s lack of bright colours so it could
also represent and attract a hipster subculture.
5. SUBCULTURES
• Hipsters
• Hipsters refers to a person who follows the latest trends and
fashions, especially those regarded as being outside the
cultural mainstream.
• Hipsters would fit into my target audience as there interests
in the latest new artists and life style choices match my
magazine.
6. GENDER
• The magazine front cover has
a main image of a woman
who is a singer, songwriter.
This clearly represents young
women in music, her image in
front of a whole cityscape
provides a sense of power
and importance, this
represents what could be
seen as positive portrayal of
women in media so feminists
will feel represented.
• This is good as my main
audience of the magazine
from research carried out
through questionnaires and
focus groups is women.
7. GENDER
• However the colour scheme is monochromatic throughout
and is accessible for both genders, the male audience is
represented within cover lines for articles some of which
specifically appealing to men as well as the contents page of
the magazine includes a lot of page references to articles
that are very informative about the film music industry which
is very male dominated so therefore they are represented
there.
8. DISABILITY
• My magazine does not represent disability however disability
does effect a minority of the population.
• Furthermore I think that the magazine text and layout is
very accessible for people of all ability so there could be
potential in the future for representation of that group in
society.
9. RACE AND ETHNICITY
• The front cover of the magazine features a female, Asian
(Bengali) cover star. She is also featured on the contents and
double paged spread. I think this represents minority ethnic
groups in society.
• Furthermore minority ethnic groups are generally
underrepresented in all forms of media, so this magazine
would fill a gap in the market.
10. SOCIAL CLASS
• Social class is a
division of a
society based on
social and
economic status.
• My magazine will
be targeted at
working class and
middle middle
class with a low
price of £2.50 as
the majority of
my target
audience
includes young
people who are
likely to be
students.
11. SOCIAL CLASS
• The magazine is not focused around social class as it aims to
be inclusive however in it’s design and genre it is very unique
and sophisticated so in this way represents middle class and
above.
• However the cover star featured is a self made success story
and the language used in the article is not class specific or
formal. It is priced quite low at £2.50 so people of all classes
including working class would feel represented as well as it
appealing to them due to relatability and affordability.
