The document discusses magazine genres and subgenres. It defines genres as categories with similar forms or subjects that appeal to specific audiences. Subgenres allow for more precise targeting. The author analyzes existing regional magazines in genres like fashion, sports, and music. She determines a culture and lifestyle magazine would best suit her target student audience in the North East of England. It would incorporate a range of topics through subgenres like arts, music, fashion, and more. In conclusion, the author believes a culture magazine gives the best platform to engage students of both genders.
While some of us know what a journalist does, it is fair to say that we have a role to play in the society we live in. There are nine principles that govern our job. Once we are aware of these principles, how do we get to writing a news story?

In this presentation, I have looked at different genre's of magazines in the North East, to help me decide which genre I want to do for my own products.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. GENRE- “CONVENTIONAL DEFINITIONS OF GENRE ARE BASED ON THE IDEA THAT
THEY SHARE PARTICULAR CONVENTIONS OF CONTENT THAT APPEAL TO A SPECIFIC
AUDIENCE”- DANIEL CHANDLER
A genre is a stylistic category of artistic composition, as in music or
literature, characterized by similarities in form or subject matter.
For instance, in terms of a magazine, the genre is the topic that the entire
magazine features on and focuses around through its content and style.
Regional magazines, much like national magazines, have a wide range of
genres for music to culture to sport however focus solely around one area of
country.
In order for me to create a magazine that will both appeal to m target
audience and compete in the magazine industry I will have to choose a genre
that will allow me to attract an audience and be unique yet still conform to
conventions
3. SUB-GENRE
A sub-genre is a category that is a subdivision of a larger genre and allows a
product to have a more specific topic/ audience by its significantly more
precise generalisation of styles.
This deeper focus on a topic allows magazines to be unique and makes
magazines more plentiful as each genre could have numerous sub-genres.
For example, the genre of music can be divided into subdivisions such as:
pop, indie, punk, rock, county or rap therefore allowing magazines to focus
on one area and attract an audience with a specific interest.
An option for a magazine is to have more than one sub genre and therefore
create a less limited and more interesting magazine for an audience. In turn
this would allow a regional magazine in particular to gain a larger following
as it can focus of different aspects unique to the region, which would
prevent the alienation of a specific group of the region.
4. REGION
For my regional magazine I have decided to base it with the North East of
England as this is the area that live in and therefore have the mst knowledge
about. In addition to this, it allows me to have a greater opportunity in
identifying current and successful magazines in my region and find an genre
or subgenre which there is a demand for in my region. I have decided to
base the magazine on the North East rather than a specific city such as
Newcastle, Sunderland or Durham because it will allow me to access a larger
audience and therefore improve the changes of the magazine being more
successful.
As I live in the North East, I am already aware that there is a limited number
of regional magazines specifically aimed at citizens of the North East
available, especially for teenagers and young adults. Considering the fact
that the North East has over 5 major universities and plentiful colleges/sixth
forms and prides itself in having a great student culture/ presence, one can
infer that a magazine focused on these types of individuals would be the
most successful as there is a clear gap in the market and a possible demand.
5. FASHION MAGAZINE- BELLE BRIDAL
Fashion, despite being a genre of its own, can also be included as a sub-genre
within a culture/lifestyle magazine. This genre stereotypically has a target
audience of women of all ages however there are fashion magazines targeted at
men as well.
Belle Bridal is a regional fashion magazine that is based in the North East and
Yorkshire. It is primarily targeted at women from the ages of 21-40 who are
getting married, however can be considered to be targeting women of all ages.
This magazine portrays and targets the female audience due o the multitude of
female models used both in their magazine and on their website. In addition to
this Belle Bridal includes content surrounding: beauty, fashion and wedding
events which are stereotypically things aimed to attract women. Furthermore,
their website has an entirely pink and white colour scheme which connotes the
female genre.
As the audience that I am planning to target is students of both genders, I think
that this genre of fashion, and wedding fashion in particular, would be very
difficult to appeal to despite this genre proving to be popular in my region. Due
to this I think that fashion would be a good sub-genre to use with in my
magazine but not the main, sole feature.
6. SPORTS MAGAZINE- NORTHERN GOLFER
Sports magazines are stereotypically marketed for a target audience of males between the
ages of 16-31. This genre of magazine has the ability to attract all ages with out manipulating
the content too much as fans of the sports with in the product will be looking for the same
information. Within a sports magazine there can be many sub-genres which can help increase
the magazines popularity as it can attract a wider audience. This genre can also be used with
in a culture/lifestyle magazine as a sub genre.
Northern Golfer is a regional sports magazine that offers the latest information on golf
tournaments courses and tips. This sports magazine focuses of the very specific sub-
genre of golfing and therefore is predominately aimed at males interested in golf. This is
shown by the excessive use of male models however they do attempt to feature females.
When reading the magazine it is made evident that it focuses on more national stories
rather than regional. The magazine could include features such as regional stars or
courses however I think there is a lack of this due to the restricted target audience and
subject matter and the fact that in the North East, golfing isn’t the most favoured or
prominent sport. For this reason I wouldn’t choose to do a magazine based around this
sport and instead the better option would be to do one based on football however as I
don’t have a huge amount of knowledge of sport I don’t think that I could adapt an already
existing magazine to successfully attract the target audience in my region. Instead, I would
prefer to create a magazine that include subjects I would be interested in reading as I am
included in my target audience however, this may be a good option to have as a sub-genre
in a lifestyle magazine to attract the male aspect of my target audience.
7. MUSIC MAGAZINE- NE:MM
Music magazine can be targeted at any age and gender meaning they can become
very popular. The genre of music has many various sub-genres such as pop, rock
and jazz which allows magazines to specialise in one and provide a multitude of
information about the specifics of that sub-genre. Music can be a sub-genre of a
culture/lifestyle magazine as well.
NE:MM (North East Music Magazine) is one the main regional music
magazines in the North East that provides information about local
concerts, bands, artists, gigs and reviews. This particular magazine
focuses its content around the sub-genres of: classical, roots, groove
and RPM which in my opinion are rather obscure and unique
considering magazines usually focus on genres such as: pop, rock or
R&B.
Due to the ever growing music scene in the North East I think that a
magazine that incorporates music would be very successful with a
student target audience. The reasoning that NE:MM only focuses on
this genre may be that when initially publish there wasn’t much of a
music culture in the North East.
8. CULTURE AND LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE- THE CRACK
A culture and lifestyle magazine can be targeted at any age and any gender due
to its ability to incorporate many different sub-genres. I have decided to create a
culture and lifestyle magazine opposed to any of the aforementioned ones due to
the fact all the sub-genres can be manipulated to fit my region and its culture.
The Crack magazine is aimed at an audience aged between
18 and 30 year olds and offers a wide range of sub-genres
within its pages such as: music, art and film. This enables
the magazine to attract the majority of the region as no
one is alienated or left out based on their interests.
Personally, I like the idea of a multitude of subject topics
in one magazine and for this reason believe that this
would be the best genre of magazine to target at my
chosen student audience. In addition to this the crack and
other lifestyle/culture magazines in the North East are
aimed at an older target audience meaning that the is a
gap for a modern styled magazine aimed at the and
broadcasting youth culture.
9. CONCLUSION- CULTURE MAGAZINE
After looking at different genres of magazines that are already available in
the North East, I have decided that the best choice for me to create is a
culture magazine as I can manipulate a range of topics/sub-genres to fit the
North East. In addition to this I believe that this genre would provide me with
the best platform for engaging with a student target audience of both
genders.
This genre of magazine is also the one that I have the most interest and
knowledge in meaning that I can be more creative with the magazine and its
content. The sub-genres that I am considering are: the arts, music, fashion,
sport, film, food and drink however I will be doing further research into
culture magazine specific sub-genres to ensure I pick the most suitable and
popular ones for my audience.
