This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. PURPOSE AND OBJECTIONS
• The purpose of my pop genre magazine is to entertain the younger audience within
the pop genre. I will do this through interviews which will give an insight into a pop
artists life, quizzes, q&a's, competitions which will allow the audience to interact
with the magazine and have a chance to win and information about events in North
London. I believe that there is a lack of pop magazines aimed at my target audience.
I aim to widen the younger demographic for pop. But overall the main purpose of
my pop magazine is to entertain, inform, educate, promote and advertise.
3. MOOD BOARD
• The mood board shown below is here to give a visual of my ides for my magazine
and some colours and fonts.
4. FORM AND GENRE
• My magazine is going to take the form of a physical print, and also an online magazine.
People who read the magazine online will pay a subscription fee by going to the website, the
online version of the magazine can be viewed from the website. The print version, could
either find the new issue in shops, or they can order the magazine straight from the website
to get it delivered. My magazine will cost £3.50 as isn’t not expensive compared to other
magazines because young people don't have disposable income. My unique selling point is
15% of the price will go to local pop music venues within north London. The USP will work
due to young people going to these venues so will make their experience better due to the
venue having money to improve the facilities. The genre of the magazine is pop and pop is
popular with teenagers as it repeats patterns, rhythms, and lyrics as well because most of the
songs revolve around the same themes and topics. It is also popular with teenagers because
they follow the artists on social media and get influenced through them. For example Drake,
Adele, Justin Bieber.
5. TITLE OF MAGAZINE
WITH FONT
The reason I have pick POP NOW is because gives a sense of urgency when the word 'now' is
used and allow the audience to understand that the magazine is about pop within that month
and creates FOMO. Pop gives people walking past the magazine realise what genre the
magazine is. Above are three idea fonts I might use. The second one is formal and has a bold
look to it. The third one is san-serif and is a stereotypical font for magazines associated with
the target audience however I need to be different and stand out so that is why I will use the
top one which is Pop art as its serif and gives an informality with the 3D lettering and has a
comic like look which will appeal to younger audiences.
6. CONTENT
• In the magazine, I will include exclusive interviews with artists about new songs so
the readers get the exclusive information so they feel like they were the first to know
about the artists' actions. I will also include reviews about recent concerts and will
ask readers to give their reviews on them so I can engage with the readers. The
reason I picked pop is because it's so well known in society however doesn't have
magazines aimed at the teenage age group within north London. My magazine will
include cross-promotion with artists which will mean we promote them and their
music and they promote our magazine meaning we get a bigger audience. The
magazine will also have links to social media where there will be competitions and
a's lives. To help fund the magazine I will advertise Makeup, JD sports, Boohoo and
more as the target audience enjoy these brands.
8. TARGET AUDIENCE
• I will target 12 to 18-year-olds, white, B, C1, girls for my magazine as they are the
main target for the pop genre. The primary target is 12-15-year-old girls as they are
the main target audience for pop music as songs could use topics that interest them.
The primary audience's interests are fashion, sport, global issues(climate
change). The secondary target audience is 15-18 years old, All ethnicities, B, girl as
they enjoy the pop genre. The secondary audience's interests are music, fashion,
latest news stories. The tertiary audience is any other person who enjoys the pop
genre.
10. RESOURCES AND PERSONNEL
The resources I will need are:
• A camera- To do the photoshoot
• Camera equipment- Including tripods, different lenses to get different shots to get the correct look
• Photoshoot equipment- This includes lights, backdrops if needed, props
• Photoshop software-This is to edit the pictures
• A computer- To edit pictures
The personnel I need:
• Writer- To write the information within the magazine
• Photographer- To take pictures for the magazine
• Editor- To edit content
• Models- For the photography
11. FONT STYLES
The possible cover line fonts are above. The first one is
formal and neat. The second font is bold however is
harder to read and the third one which I am going to
chose, Kids note, has an informal look however isn't too
bold.
On the right hand side there are possible fonts for my double-page spread.
The first one is rounded and has soft edges. The second one is too bold for
the double page spread. The third one, din condensed, is the one I will use
on my double page spread as it formal but not too formal for all the writing.
12. DISTRIBUTION AND MARKETING
Social media is used by my target audience so to market my magazine I shall use their
platforms. For example, Instagram will be used to post news about pop artists and also post
about the new additions of the magazine as well as Live's to allow the readers to communicate
in the comment when speaking to artists to give them a chance to listen to respond to
questions. When going through social media, pop-ups and adverts pop up which makes the
target audience investigate what it is so will encourage them to read into my magazine.
The brief implicitly says to display the 'vibrant' music scene in north London so having a
presence on social media will mean I can keep up with all the newest trends. This marketing
technique will also be used with the secondary target audience. Billboards won't be an effective
way to advertise due to the target audience not being able to drive however it would be a way to
connect with my audience due to them taking public transport so putting adverts in train
stations and at bus stops will give me another media platform to advertise on. I will distribute
the magazine through physical copies in shops, Tesco and Sainsbury's where will go with
parents and also in corner shop because its where the target audience go to get items quickly as
well as have an online version and will give deals for people who subscribe to the online or
physical copy so the reader feel they are part of the magazine.
13. COLOUR SCHEME
• Above are conventional colours associated with pop however I have picked some
darker shades to be different compared to other pop magazines so that my magazine
can stand out on the shop shelf. The primary colours I intend to use will be bright
pink and light blue. I will also use other colours minimally such as purple and blue
to contrast and provide depth.
14. ARTICLE IDEAS
• My article ideas are to have q and a so the readers can submit questions that could
get asked to an artist for example asking about the history of pop. I will also have
exclusive interviews with music producers about how they produce pop music and
how it feels working with pop artists I will also include reviews about recent concerts
in north London venues and will ask readers to give their reviews on them so I can
engage with the readers.
15. EXISTING EXAMPLES OF
MAGAZINES IN COMPETITION
Above are examples of a magazines which might be regarded as a competitor as classic pop is aimed at the same
genre audience who are of the older demographic however my proposed magazine specifically targets the younger
audience of pop. Also, my USP will make me stand out as it is targeted at the north London music scene and that
15% of the cost goes towards north London music venues. All three magazines are targeted at the same target
audience and have similar colour schemes.
