Evaluation question 7
1. Looking back at your preliminary task,
what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to the full product?
Evaluation Question 7
2. Progression
I feel I have developed a significant amount from September 2015 when I produced
my Preliminary Magazine, until now where I have finished a fully designed Front cover,
contents page and double page spread. Both the Preliminary and real magazines
were produced on Adobe Photoshop, however as explained in Question , on the real
task I was able to fully take advantage and use the different editing and refining tools
that Photoshop offered, to fully enhance my magazines outlook.
A huge difference between the Preliminary task and the real task is the overall
professionalism of the production, in terms of style, colour, language and content. All
of this thanks to Photoshop itself and learning new aspects about real magazines in
lesson time. Constructing Novation House has allowed me to fulfil my attempts to
attract my target audience, whereas looking back at my Preliminary, it failed to attract
and reach to my goal audience (sporty people in college).
So overall I feel I have progressed massively since producing my Preliminary
magazine, and in the next slides I will show you the different aspects that prove that
fact.
4. Layout, Font and Style
Overall, looking at the layout of my Preliminary magazine you can see I constructed a natural,
simple but quite messy magazine. The choice of font did not stand out on the magazine and despite
being difficult to read, there was a lack of content. Looking at the image on the right hand side of my
new magazine. The text is more outstanding and clear, the content is professional and suited to the
target audience and most importantly, unlike ‘3-5-2’ the headline is positioned central of the
magazine, allowing the brand name to stand out, in size, position and colour.
Another aspect of progression I made was already half developed when constructing my
Preliminary, and that was the colour scheme conforming to the genre. The red and blue colour
scheme suited perfectly with the sporting, footballing genre as it represented club colours. In my
House magazine I wanted to conform to the conventions the same but by using colours relating to
being in a ‘club’ scene. I used the skills I had learned and further progressed to create a suitable,
matching and in places contrasting blue and purple background to highlight the clubbing
atmosphere.
There was a progression in the way I explored the text also. Notice the Top 10 feature on my front
cover. The 10 is large to emphasize the importance of the actual 10 artists, and the hard work and
outstanding music they make to be in that position. On my Preliminary magazine, there is no textual
emphasis to represent a specific feature of the magazine.
In terms of my front cover I also added small aspects such as a footer with a blue gradient, not only
matching to the colour scheme but also allowing my to place my barcode in a visible and tidy place
and add aspects such as price, date and sponsorship logos, improving the brand identity and
making the magazine stronger on a whole.
I was also able to bring the mise-en-scene skills across from my Preliminary production in terms of
costume. In both again I needed to attract to an audience and specific social group. In ‘3-5-2’ the
football shirt and prop of the football matched perfectly with the theme off a football magazine,
similarly the futuristic coloured buffer coat representing modern House music.
These are small skills learned and worked on to fulfil the magazines goal and make the magazine
aesthetically pleasing. I feel that looking at both magazines it is clear that the real task is a stronger
performer in terms of attracting a target audience.
6. Features and Text
Looking at my contents page, the most clear area of progression and exceled
skill use would be in terms of the text and the background. The Preliminary
magazine offered a dull grey background paying no relevance to the colour
scheme of the magazine, which was sitting behind an Arial black font broken up
by thick shaped borders. You can see the skills used were very basic with shape
and font effects from the tool bar. However there is a huge different in the real
piece. The colour scheme first of all is not only a gradient effect matching with
the gradient on the front cover, but it very neatly sits behind the purple and lighter
blue text, allowing it to stand out. In this process I learnt how to add a stroke
effect around the lettering to also aid in standing out.
Another progression made is the features on the contents page. For example, my
features were very basic and laid out in a amateur fashion. I was of course
limited to speaking about college hence why the content was so basic, and it is
poorly accompanied by the red blocks separating each section. Moving onto my
real task I learnt how to make my writing look professional and make the features
themselves attract to my target audience. The questionnaires helped do this in
the planning and research however I needed to change and lay this out. My
features are broken up into sections with the colour scheme featured throughout.
I learned that it needs to look good on the naked eye, as the contents page says
it all about how the double page spreads will be laid out. I learned also that I
need to fill the space provided. I added an effective little feature of the editors
message above my main image in the right third. Small features such as this are
examples of progression and are aspects you would expect to see in a real life
magazine.
7. The Mise-en-scene
As explained before hand, in producing my magazine I wanted to attract both the old
and modern sides of House music. Therefore I changed the clothing for the contents
page on the new magazine. I placed my model in a retro early era Harrington jacket.
This choice of clothing is not directly linked to House music however this was not an
issue.
With my Preliminary production, I was 100% consistent with my choice of clothing. I
look back now and feel it would of bene effective to change this up a little, even
something as subtle as having my model in the college football team kit rather than
the same England shirt. It shows the audience that the magazine expects you to know
a wide range of detail about the genre whatever it may b, and the magazine is not to
concentrated on one specific side of a genre. For huge mainstream genres such as
pop, you will see featured artists wearing many different clothing styles. This process
has taught me a lot about Mise-en-scene and representation relating to the target
audience. England shirt
8. Progression of Media Product
Colour scheme established
at this point and linking well
to specific genre and target
audience. 1 strapline
included regarding the main
story of the magazine
At this point I had planned
my strapline and they were
included. I used the effects
to create a stroke to allow
them to stand out against
the background. Footer
given a gradient and colour
and effects on picture
finalised.
Final product. Including
small aspects such as
more visible footer details,
a sponsorship logo,
finalised headline and
straplines and a sharper
purple effect added in the
background to contrast
nicely with the sharp
golden effect Added earlier.
There were further steps included to
creating my media product. However
hear you can see the development of text
and layout in the final 3 stages. The
preliminary task was finished in 2 lessons
all in one step. The results are clear.
