might distribute your media
product and why?

Self Publishing
Self publishing may possibly be the best option
for my music magazine. This is because the
artists featured in my magazine are
independent, different and somewhat quirkier
than mainstream artists. This is reflective of my
target audience and therefore, it would make
sense for my distribution and publication to be
reflective of this as well.
Pros and Cons
• Pros:
• You control price and cover
• Publication is almost instant
• Easy to implement changes
• Every decision is yours
• Anyone can do it
• Cons:
• No free professional editing, formatting, or cover art
• Fewer sales
• Less than 10% of current magazine market
Major publishing
A major distributer may also be the best option
for my magazine. This is because while my
audience is in search of something different,
there are many people who would apply to this
description. Therefore, my magazine would be
appealing to a wide readership which would
require a larger distributer with a larger amount
of prestige.
Pros and Cons
• Pros:
• Wide distribution and more exposure
• Most offer an advance, sometimes a large one
• They do the editing and formatting
• Marketing power
• Cons:
• Hard to break in to
• Difficult to implement changes
A magazine similar to mine:
• Q magazine Q magazine is similar to mine as it features indie and rock
artists. Some who are well known and others who are new
upcoming, and a little different. It entices a wide yet specific
audience; those who are lovers of music but want to
something different, new and interesting. This is similar to my
target audience.
My chosen Distributer
• My chosen institution is Bauer media group. This
is the same company who publishes Q magazine
as well as Kerrang.
• Bauer is a European company that deals with 600
magazines.
• I feel it is the best option for me as profits would
be maximised due to large publication and the
amount of prestige that the company and it’s
magazines hold would put my magazine at the
same standard as theirs.
