Evaluation question 2
1. Evaluation Question 2
How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
(Age/Gender/interests/socio-economic
backgrounds)
2. Age
• In terms of age group my product will most likely appeal to more that one
set of age ranges. Originally I had aimed for my product to be produced for
people around my own age, so students in in later stages of their
education. This I have done through the content and the house style that I
have composed the magazine with. However with some of the
advertisements and promotions that would be available in the magazine
such as tickets for concerts and other merchandise that students may not
be able to afford due to lower incomes.
• So, because of this my magazine may also appeal to younger adults
possibly in the age ranges of 20-30. As they will be able to afford and
therefor take advantage of these promotions. If this were a real media
product this would mean that the magazines synergy with real world
events would be strongly linked.
3. Gender
• My product in terms of its content can appeal to both genders, however I
terms of the style and genre of music the magazine covers I would say that
it caters more to the male persuasion.
• This is because the colours and image I have used are very masculine and
would therefore be more attractive to male readers at first sight. The
music that the magazine covers is rock and many of its sub-genres such as
metal. These genres are quite heavy and as a generalisation these are not
very popular with women whereas something more along the lines of pop
or RnB would be more suitable when trying to engage with a largely
female audience.
• Despite this I would say that the few women that would read this
magazine would enjoy its content especially and of the cross platform links
such as with social media as women are generally more in to linked social
media.
4. Interests
• In regards to peoples interest, it is very clear from the style of the
magazine and its content that it is very much for people who are heavily
invested in the world of rock music and associated sub-genres.
• The content all be rock music based and there would be no crossovers into
other major genres so this means that the people who buy this would
have to be dedicated, this does narrow down potential buyers of the
magazine. But rock is a very popular genre, and existing products such as
kerrang! have shown that magazine in this position can be highly
successful.
• They would also have to be interested in going to concerts and possibly
even playing instruments themselves to make the most of the promotions
that I would offer throughout the magazine. This further emphasises the
dedication that fans of this magazine would have.
5. Socio-economic background
• Socio-economic background was a difficult one to consider when
producing my product.
• In terms of social background I had to consider what particular
backgrounds or upbringings would foster an interest in this type of music.
The only example I could think of would be my own as my own interest in
the music industry complies with what content I had envisioned for my
magazine. This meant that in terms of social background I would expect
that the people who would buy my magazine would be white/working
class males.
• For the economic side of this topic I would say that to keep up with and
subscription fees or any promotional offers they people who would buy
this would definitely be in the average range in terms of a fiscal stand
point.
