Interactive Powerpoint_How to Master effective communication
Evaluation q2
1. Q2 How does your media products represent
particular social groups?
S.f
2. Areas of society that are represented in my magazine
In my magazine, the areas of society that are represented are
white, middle class females that can afford this magazine with
their pocket money, most likely. As my target audience is young
females, I have only appealed to that audience to make it clear
who I was addressing, as trying to represent too many
different areas of society would cause confusion in my
magazine. As all of my models are British, this reflects
the target audience that would be likely to buy this
magazine, but does not limit other ethnicities as the
contents inside would appeal to all ethnicities.
Although I have used one Asian female to show some diversity
in my magazine and how other ethnicities can still purchase
the magazine and relate to a model on the cover (shown by the
green arrow).
3. Sub-cultures that my magazine represents
I think my magazine represents and appeals to the ‘teeny boppers’, and the
definition of a teeny bopper is ‘a young teenage girl who follows adolescent
trends in music, fashion and culture’. This represents my target audience well
as it is described as a young teenage girl, which is my target audience, and
also that they follow trends in music. Pop music is one of the most popular
genres of music currently in the music charts and so there are a lot of people
who could consider themselves a ‘teenybopper’. To appeal to this audience I
have used a teenage girl on the cover and also on the contents
page. I have also included instruments such as a guitar and a
microphone as these are also standard instruments that can be
related to the pop genre.
The ‘typical white fangirl’ would also be associated with this genre, due
to the huge following of pop boybands such as one direction
and solo successful pop boys such as Justin Bieber.
4. Representing Race, ethnicity, class, gender, disability
• I think that I have represented race as white British but I have also included an
Asian female to create a variety and not confine the audience to that specific race,
although that is the majority of my target audience and what I am targeting. I have
challenged the stereotype of having all white females, and have done this
deliberately to have a range of different models.
• I am also appealing to females and this genre is usually associated with that genre,
therefore I have included lots of females on my magazine as the young target
audience, stereotypically tend to look up to those celebrity females as role models.
• I have represented class as working/middle class, I have done this by making the
magazine relatively cheap, compared to other magazines which have a higher
price point. I have included free gifts and competitions to win concert tickets, this
would appeal, most likely, to the working and middle class rather than the higher
class.
• All my models are seen as able, normal ability people, and as Vladamir Propp
suggested, women are seen as more dependent gender but are the first to ask for
help, where as in my magazine, the women are seen as independent and strong.
