Evaluation question 2
1. Evaluation Question 2
How does your media product
represent particular social group?
(age, gender, ethnicity, clothing)
2. AGE- my magazine is targeted at age group 16-22. Band members on my
front cover and double page spread belong in this group so that readers can
relate to them. On my contents page I list social media that magazine can be
found on which is appropriate for my target audience as young people nowadays
are very active online and regular use social media and it’s a form of promotion
and also makes readers feel like the magazine is up to date and accessible for
them. Throughout the article I use informal language and incorporate few slang
word to ensure that my target audience can understand it and relate to it as it’s
likely the type of language they use on daily basis which also reflects the age
group. I also list the bands featured in the magazine based on bands that people
from the particular age group choose and pointed in my questionnaire therefore
the bands choice reflects the age because these are the artists my age group
mainly listens to.
3. GENDER-Music genre of my magazine-indie rock is mainly associated with
male artists and target audience however there are many females listening to it and
the number of female musicians in the genre is also getting larger. My magazine is
targeting both males and females and it’s represented e.g. by having both genders on
the main image on front cover, content page and double page spread. The band and
duo I feature in the magazine have both male and female members which means that
more readers can relate to them and see them as an idol. On contents page I included
articles that are appealing to both genders e.g. fashion section can be targeted more
towards females and other content will get more males attention. The colour scheme
isn’t specifically associated with any gender therefore no one will assume it’s for one
gender or the other when they see it on the shelf. I think that that way magazine has
more chance of getting known and successful as it doubles the audience that is likely
to buy it which is important for a new magazine. I also wanted target both genders as
music isn’t something that people often separate due to gender as everyone has a
different taste and almost all genres have both genders in their audience even though
they’re in different ratio.
4. Ethnicity- Most of subjects in my magazine are white British
ethnicity and bands that are featured are also mainly representing that
background. However on my content page one of the duo members is an
Asian female which incorporates other ethnicities and makes the magazine
seem relevant to more readers.
Social group- My magazine is mainly targeted towards middle and
working class. It’s represented by e.g. the way members of band featured on
front cover and double page spread are dressed. They’re wearing clothes
associated with music genre –indie like leather jacket, hoodies, skinny jeans,
oversize jackets therefore they don’t look fancy or like they belong in upper
class. Target audience cab relate to them because they see that they belong to
their social class and understand their way of living., It’ s also reinforced in the
interview as the way they speak is informal and they mention music festivals
and places that are mainly associated with middle class and sometimes working
class. Some of the article titles on contents page also represent social class e.g.
“DIY-reinvent your wardrobe without a single trip to a store” suggests that
readers can change and create their clothes themselves which saves them
money and also makes them look unique and individual which what indie rock
fans what to be portrayed as.
