The document discusses how a dance and festival music magazine represents the social group of new affluent workers. New affluent workers are described as young, between 14-30 years old, coming from working class backgrounds but now having sustainable jobs and incomes. They are socially and culturally active with interests in activities like sports, music gigs, and social media. Various elements of the magazine's design are analyzed, showing how they target this group - such as youthful images on the cover that portray an affluent lifestyle, content about artists and festivals, and a relaxed style throughout.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
1. How does your
media product
represent
particular social
groups?By Emma Crystall
2. Social Group
NEW AFFLUENT WORKERS – this is social group in which I feel that my audience
fits into the best; this group fulfill the purpose of my dance and festival music
magazine most effectively.
New Affluent Workers are a young class group which are socially and culturally
active, with middling levels of economic capital.
According to the Great British Class Survey result, lots of people in this group:
• Are young – mainly between the ages of 14-30 years old (this is within my
target audience)
• Come from a working class background – have sustainable jobs and a good
income in order to meet the middle of all the class groups in terms of wealth
(will be able to afford the life style that my
magazine advertises e.g. holidays, clubbing,
festivals…)
• Have high scores for emerging culture,
such as watching sport, going to gigs and
using social media
3. Front Cover Analysis
The feature article
photograph offers a
view of two young
females, within the age
range of my
demographic (15-25),
giving the reader
someone to aspire to.
This also portrays an
affluent worker by their
youthful, powerful and
cultural image.
The title of my magazine,
which suggests an
overload of music,
culture and fun, links to
my social group as they
are socially and culturally
active.
“RED HOT IBIZA NEWS”
revels the true essence
of this social group.
Affluent workers don’t
usually participate in
highbrow culture events
and instead enjoy active,
outgoing events and the
party life style.
The pastel purple
background reflects
an affluent worker as
they are normally
quiet relaxed.
However the bright,
almost electric,
purple used for the
writing reflects their
wilder, party side.
4. Contents Analysis
I purposely designed my
layout this way due to new
affluent workers not being
a highbrow culture, I took
into account how they
study and read an article
and based the design of
my layout on that. From
my study I discovered that
they like to take their time
when reading an article
and they prefer simplicity
therefore I produced a
contents page which is
simple and easy to follow.
Throughout my contents
page I referred to many
different artists, DJ’s and
musicians to effectively
draw in this social group. I
choose artists that they
would be either familiar
with of interested in.
I purposely included an
image of a stage from a
festival as an affluent
worker would be interested
in this kind of activity. It also
reflects my genre of ‘dance
and festival music’.
5. Double Page Spread
Analysis
The house style of my double page spread reflects a magical, relaxed and chill theme,
conveying the relaxed attitude that an affluent worker may have and also conveying the
genre of my magazine. A typical new affluent worker would get drawn into this type of
style, due to their interest in emerging culture.
My article content is based on
an interview with my cover
stars. Affluent workers would
be interested in this article as
they are interested in new and
upcoming artists and keeping
up with new trends. I used
language and vocabulary
which I felt were easy to
understand and simple so that
affluent workers would be
able to understand and
connect with the article.
