The document provides an evaluation of the student's music video production process. It summarizes the strengths and weaknesses experienced during the research, planning, time management, technical, aesthetic, and audience appeal aspects of the project. Peer feedback noted things liked such as the VHS filter and autumn scenery, but also improvements such as reducing shakiness and framing issues in shots. The student agrees the VHS style worked well but disagrees their camerawork was good, and feels they should have taken more time during production.
3. RESEARCH
The main strength of my research was the fact that it
gave me lots of room to compare different videos and
get a feeling of what I wanted to achieve with my video.
My primary weakness was a lack of music videos that
were similar to the feel of the song that I could use as a
comparison, this is due to most videos by the artist
being high budget and heavy on VFX which is very
different to what I wanted with my video.
I feel that my main improvement point would be to take
a lot more time on my shots and make sure I get the
perfect clips during filming, this would help the video to
feel less jumpy because I would be able to use a range of
transitions.
4. PLANNING
By the time it came to planning I had already thought
about exactly what I was trying to create with the video
and what song I was going to use, this helped because it
would give me more time to plan out other details of the
video (Cast, Locations etc.).
The main problem that I had during the planning phase
was that I had done contingency planning for a range of
problems that I could’ve ran into but I didn’t plan for a
cast member to be completely unavailable which ended
up happening. The problem with a cast member being
completely unavailable was that this meant that some of
my previous planning had to be completely redone.
5. TIME MANAGEMENT
I think that I didn’t do great with managing time due to it
being hard for me to get to york for filming, this resulted
in my video feeling rushed just so I can meet the
deadline.
If I had more time to complete my work I would’ve tried
to get more shots and tried out some different editing
techniques to make the final product more interesting
and si it could look more refined.
6. TECHNICAL QUALITIES -
CAMERA
I liked the use of
backpacks because it
gives an organic
friends hanging out
feel.
Another thing I liked is the
use of a somewhat busy
street to make it feel natural
7. TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
EDITING/POST
For the visual style I was trying to achieve with the
edits I went for a style similar to the filter used in
the official video for another song by Joji (“Yeah
Right”). I created this style by combining Gaussian
blur and noise in premiere pro, I liked the way it
turned out as it reminds me of the way VHS tapes
8. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
I feel that the use of autumnal settings helps to really bring
out the chill aspects of the video and therefore create an
interesting sound and visual combination. The only issue I
have with this is the fact that it feels kind of inconsistent due
to the filming taking place over a 2 week period.
9. AUDIENCE APPEAL
I think that my video would sit well with the target
audience because of its portrayal of average teenagers
hanging out and having fun along with nostalgic
feeling. I think one part that helps with this is the use
of video games as a pass time with a friend which is
something that the majority of the current generation
can relate to.
11. FEEDBACK 1
What did you like about the product?
Dan worked well as an actor
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
Things could’ve been cropped out (fingers)
12. FEEDBACK 2
What did you like about the product?
I liked the colours and setting
The camerawork was clever (not having people in the way of shots)
Use of autumn backgrounds/scenery
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
Cut on beats to make it feel more fluid
Make narrative more clear
13. FEEDBACK 3-HARRY
What did you like about the product?
I like the VHS effect filter in the video. It looked really nice and
effective.
The song choice was good and worked with the video itself.
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
I noticed that the footage in the video is entirely reflected which looks
really weird and confusing.
14. PEER FEEDBACK
SUMMARY
What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I expected the feedback on my VHS filter as I feel like it worked really
well and am glad that I decided to go with that style.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
I didn’t agree with the comments on my camerawork being good due
to the fact that some shots felt really shakey and my finger was in
some of it.
15. PEER FEEDBACK
SUMMARY
I feel like the main problem with my video that was highlighted
a lot in the feedback was that I rushed quite a lot with the
video and it showed, so in summary if I could re-do it I
would’ve took my time and looked over footage as I was
shooting.
