3. Research
What were the strengths of your research? How did your research help your product? What were the
weaknesses of your research? What could you have done better/improve? What effect would this have
had on your product?
When researching and looking into different music videos I watched quite a few and chose ones that each
had different effects in them, which I could use inspiration from for my own music video. For example, in
the music video ‘Whatever It Takes’ by Imagine Dragons, they used different effects such as including
different scenarios in the same location (e.g. earthquakes, flooding, fire, etc.) This helped me think of the
different locations/ scenarios I could include in my video.
In my final project, I included about 3 different locations, each having a different scenario. For example, in
the location of the church there are different areas and scenarios that are filmed in the church, and I
filmed at a few different locations in the same village so I would have a range of different footage for the
video.
I also looked and analyzed the music video for ‘Let It All Go’ by Rhodes ft. Frances. This music video was a
good example about the different visual effects used in music videos. In this music video there is a pink
colored background for effects, creating quite a chill and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. For my music
video, I did change the visual effects slightly, by adjusting the contrast, exposure, temperature, using an
adjustment layer to make this process a lot more easier.
When looking back at my research, I do feel that there are a few sections of it that I could have improved.
For example, I feel like my research could have looked better if I improved I could have done more. The
reason this didn’t happen would be due to time. If I had a chance to view and analyze more videos then I
could have developed more ideas/techniques I could use for my music video.
Also, when looking back through my research, I noticed that I hadn’t looked that much into doing
experiments. I did do some experiments with the camera at a location that wasn’t part of my music video
and I put this into my research powerpoint, but I didn’t get a chance to edit this in Premiere Pro due to
timing
4. Planning
What were the strengths of your planning? How did your planning help your product? What were the
weaknesses of your planning? What could you have done better/improve? What effect would this have
had on your product?
In my planning I included a few mind maps that I had created using the website ‘bubble.us’.
This website was very useful when it came to creating quick mind maps as the design of the
mind map was already set out for you, so this is website helped me save time for my planning.
I would say that the slides where I have included mind maps that talk about the different
songs that I liked were the strengths of my planning. Creating the mind maps did help with my
music video because I was able to gather lots of different techniques and ideas from existing
music videos and songs together, that I knew I could be able to put it in my video. I managed
to gather lots of ideas from listening to all the different songs and genres that helped me
come up with different visual effects for my video. At this point I had already decided on a
song so I knew what genre I should look more into.
If I were to improve anything about my planning I would try to make sure that I write down
more information down, especially when it came to discussing my final idea. I think at this
point of the power point I felt like I was repeating things I had already said so I was struggling
for ideas to write. To improve this I could have done some more research into music videos or
that specific music genre so I would have more knowledge and information to write down.
The fact that I may not have had an in depth slide about my final product means that I didn’t
have a lot to look back on when it came to my production, however I did have a lot of
information and ideas in my planning, especially in the mind maps.
5. Time Management
Did you manage your time well? Did you complete your project on time or would your products have
improved with additional time? What would you have done if you had more time to produce your
work?
I think, during the time of making the power points before production, I feel like I struggled for time. I only
had a week to complete each power point and I feel like in the first week I was struggling for ideas and a
song choice, however when I was doing my research I didn’t have a chance to complete my editing for my
research experiments due to timing, and I had to move on to completing my next part of production. If I
had more time to complete this part of my project I could have had a chance to experiment with different
tools on premiere pro that I could have used in my music video.
I started to film my actual music video footage on the third week, at the weekend. I filmed all the footage
in one day so I feel like time was managed well at this point. I then felt confident enough to start editing
the following week.
On the following Tuesday I uploaded all my footage onto the mac and I started to edit the same day. I
believe on this week (the 4th week into production) I had managed my timing quite well as I had all the
footage I needed to edit the music video. The editing process did take the full week which was fine for me
as on the 5th week I could then move onto my production reflection and my evaluation.
However I do feel that if I had more time to complete this project I could have recorded some footage at a
different location so I would have more footage.
6. Technical Qualities - camera
My music video:
In my music video, one of the main
angles I used was having the camera
stay in a certain place and it views
the back of the performer as they are
walking. The camera is straight and is
a long shot angle. I also used the
same angle however this time the
performer would be walking towards
the camera from a fair distance. A
similar shot from an existing music
video could be the video for ‘Sorry’
by Nothing But Thieves. You see clips
in this music video of the performer
walking forward, following the
camera.
In the location of the Church I used
different shots to film different
sections of the church. For example,
shots from the front of the church,
from the back, shots of the stained
glass and pews, etc.
These angles shot in this music video are similar
to the shots that I took for my video. In the first
photo the angle is longshot ad the performer is
walking, in the other photo the angle is more of a
close up. I used both of my angles in my music
video so I had a range of different footage I could
use so it wasn’t all the same.
The differences in the ‘Sorry’ video and my music
video is that in the music video ‘Sorry’ it shows
scenarios of disaster striking and the world
‘ending’ whereas in my video it is more peaceful
in an environment where no one is around and
the performer is surrounded by nature.
The location of this music video (‘Numb’ by
Linkin Park) is set in a church, which is one of
the locations I used in my music video. They
angled the camera so it was showing the isle
the the pews at the side of the church which
is effective, which is also an angle that I used
in my music video. The differences in this
existing video and my music video is that in
‘Numb’, the performers that are in the
church are in a band performing and singing
to the song with the church as a background
location. On the other hand, in my music
video I had one performer looking around
the church, but she isn’t singing or
performing anything.
8. Aesthetic Qualities
Does your work look good? Was it creative? What aspects of your video's visuals do you like? What
would you improve? How would you improve it? Discuss the strengths and weaknesses Put your final
piece(s) in the centre of a page and analyse them Use text boxes and arrows
For me, the aesthetic qualities part of my music video did turn out how I expected it to so this is
something that I am quite impressed with. In my music video there are clips of the performer in an
outdoor location, walking down a path that is arched by trees. The scenery in this location is aesthetically
pleasing and is very beautiful. When this is put into premiere Pro, I could adjust the contrast and exposure
which helped make the quality of this part of the music video better.
When editing the music video, I was able to adjust the exposure, temperature and contrast which helped
make my clips have better quality and all have the same lighting when the original clips were darker than
others. I feel like, when I was filming indoors, the quality may have been better if I had lighting equipment
with me while filming. However, like I said, the tools in Premiere Pro helped improve the lighting and
visual qualities of the music video.
9. Audience Appeal
How have you appealed to your target audience? What specific bits of content would appeal to your
target audience. Refer to your findings from your questionnaire. Put your final piece(s) in the centre of
a page and analyse them. Use text boxes and arrows
Firstly, I feel like I have appealed to my target audience because in my music video I didn’t use anything that
would be viewed as gory or explicit. This means that my music video would not have to be age restricted.
My aim at the beginning of the project was to make sure that anyone of any age could listen it, and I feel
like this is has been followed through.
When I was doing my research for the genre of music I chose, I noticed that in a lot of the videos there is
the singer/band performing the song on stage or in a certain location. For my music video, I didn’t have
anyone singing along to the music video as this wasn’t an initial idea. If the audience were into these types
of music videos then they may not be into my video that much. However, the song would suit a storyline
better other than the artist performing on stage.
The music video would likely be mainly viewed by people up to the age of around 25 as people of the
younger generation are more likely to be spending their time watching music videos online, on the tv, etc.
Also, my music video has references to people who may turn to God or praying in difficult situation as one
of the locations is set in a church. Therefor people who have religious beliefs in God may enjoy watching
and relating to this music video.
11. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
• The variety of shots used and differing compositions made each ‘scene’ flow
well together and keep each section fresh.
• The locations were well scouted and aesthetically diverse and beautiful.
• The cuts were to the beat of the song, adding flare to each new shot.
• The reverse shots were interesting and changed up areas of the video that
would have been repetitive. The sped up sections are the same.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• Certain shots could have been improved by correcting the focus.
• Some shots were shaky.
• Shots with the subject in could use more headroom.
12. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
• I liked the different shots, and the way that they match with all scenes.
• I think the video was well produced.
• I also liked the effects that you added between some scenes which make the
video more interesting.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• I think at the beginning and at the end you could add a effect to make fade
to start to close the video.
