3. When doing research for my production I gained valuable information through
primary and secondary research, this greatly benefitted me and my production as
it inspired me to which idea I wanted to produce as a short film, doing this
research also allowed me to gain lots of inspiration and knowledge on my
audience and previous productions. The research I have gained has also shown
me what genre of short films are saturated and allowed me to make mine stand
out, by gaining this research especially the primary research like the survey it has
allowed me to know what preferences my audience has when it comes to films.
This allows me to preference my film to my audiences likings to appeal to them
more, although there were benefits to the research I gained there were also
downsides to it too for example most of the secondary research I found was hard
to relate to my idea for my production like when I was looking at big budget
Hollywood films it was hard to find films which had the same content as my
production and had to look at films that focus on time travel and not the passage
of time itself.
4. When doing my planning It helped me very much as it allowed me to thoroughly
plan out my production and be prepared for when I film. Creating things like a
structural break down and shot list was very useful in helping me plan my
production as it gave me clear instructions of what and when the shots will take
place. This planning is very structural to the production of my short film and without
it I think my production would fall flat. However there were some problems when
filling out the pre production planning PowerPoint for example making a mood
board or concept board, I struggled to find pictures that would fit into the narrative
or idea of my production and found no inspiration when doing either of these. My
production followed my story board and shot list very accurately and visually turned
out very similar to my planning, this is because I looked back at my story board
and shot list multiple times so I had a clear understanding of what to shoot so I
wouldn't get stuck and halt production. My improvements for this would be to have
planned my shot list a little bit more in depth however the structural breakdown
table helped me with having detail for my shots.
5. Time management is crucial in a films production as it provides an incentive and
a reason to get work completed by a certain date, in my production this is key to
the production of my short film as I need to get my work completed by the 22nd
of December, by having this deadline it encouraged me to complete my work by
this time as I didn't want my work to go to waste.
6. When filming my production the camera played a huge roll in making my
shots look good, I had to change the settings on the camera to make the
lighting, aperture and focus correct for every shot. I also used a tripod to
allow me to create a fluid stop motion animation and to make all my shots
steady in my production, I shot at 720p in 25 fps for a clear smooth image.
I enjoyed this task and I also think that the stop motion and time lapse
came out very well when reviewing it in post production, however I do think
that I could’ve improved the lighting when filming my production and
maybe had some more complex shot types in my production.
7. The audio in my production played a vital part in creating an atmosphere and
making my production seem more authentic, I used royalty free sounds effects
that I got from online to go over the stop motion animation so the production
seems more fluid and is more authentic. I also used royalty free music which I
got from online too which helped create an atmosphere and tone to the
production when the audience watches it, when putting all the audio clips
together with the animation and film clips I used audio transition so the audio
sounded more fluid and when coming in and out of each scene. When doing this
task the things that worked well was the page flicking noises that I added over
the stop motion animation as I managed to get the noises to play in time with the
flicking of each page, however something that I would improve would be the
audio levels to make the audio a lot quieter so it doesn’t sound so out of place.
8. The editing and the work that I did in post played a big role in the production of
my film, this is where I was able to construct all my footage and audio together. I
edited my production by getting all the clips and images that I had taken when
shooting my production and imported them into adobe premiere, I edited all the
images I had taken into a stop motion animation and I sped up the length that
the image was displayed on screen to make the animation seem more fluid and
run smoother. I also sped up the footage I had of my watch to create a time
lapse which I put between the stop motion animation so the animation didn’t get
boring and drag out for too long. When editing I also added video transitions on
most of the video clips, I used a lot of fade to white and zoom in and out
transitions because they seemed appropriate with the narrative and made it look
more authentic. I also added a lot of audio transitions over the audio clips as this
helped make the audio come into the scene smoothly rather than abruptly.
9. The aesthetic quality of my production was very minimal as I didn’t use any props,
costumes or makeup as it didn’t fit into the narrative of my production, however I
do think that the production itself looks good in the end, all shots are in focus and
the shots were recorded at 720p and 25 fps which allowed me to get high quality
shots.
10. I tried to make my production seem appealing to most audiences and didn’t
add any explicit or graphic material so it could be enjoyed by all audiences.
This proved very easy for me due to the narrative I had created which was
also very audience friendly and would allow most audiences to understand
what was going on.
12. What did you like about the product?
What improvements could have been made to the product?
“I think you could improve the final shot as the older character was in
the same location which made it very confusing to understand what
just happened”.
“I liked the music used, it was very atmospheric.”.
13. What did you like about the product?
“I liked the stop motion animation and the sound effects that went with
them”.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
“You could have improved the lighting and camera angles used”.
14. What did you like about the product?
“I liked the cuts between the animation and time lapses”
What improvements could have been made to the product?
“could’ve used more creative shots and editing techniques”.
15. What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I agree with most of my feed back as I think its true, I especially think
that I should’ve changed the location of the final shot as it did make
the production confusing and made the narrative hard to understand.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
I didn’t disagree with any of the improvements from my peers.
16. Overall the majority of my peers enjoyed my production and thought it was
very positive with a unique narrative, however they all thought I should’ve
changed the location of my last shot as it made it very confusing to
understand the narrative properly straight away.
