2. GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy – some
sections require you to delete the information on the slide
and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through the
pre-production phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
6. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
7. VIDEO 1: J.I.D – OFF
DEEZ
- Black and white filter
- Small coloured patches to highlight key elements
- Use of hand drawn animations to create interesting effects
- Good angles and transitions
- Fast paced
- Lots of rap conventions displayed (Flashy clothes, cars and
jewellery)
- Plain scenery to make the rapper the main focal point
8. VIDEO 2: A$AP ROCKY –
A$AP FOREVER
- Really well made
- Great transitions using scenery and objects
- Aged/Faded style to match backing track
- Slightly nostalgic
- Seamless transitions
- Good camerawork
- Interesting scenery
- Well done angles
- Really fast paced
9. A$AP ROCKY –
BABUSHKA BOI
- Interesting use of practical effects
- Great lighting to highlight scenery and important elements
- Feels refreshing compared to most new music videos
- Reinvention of modern rap music video conventions
- No over the top transitions
- Almost no special effects which at times is good but there is
still room where they could work well
10. POTENTIAL SONGS
Joji – No Fun
Muramasa – Lovesick
A$AP Rocky – A$AP Forever
Trippie Redd – Love Scars
14. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
- Opportunity to get used to using lighting in videos and
chanche to play around using it.
- Chance to try out filming in a variety of locations and
at different times of day.
- Chance to mess around with different effects and styles
of editing.
- Good time to work on filming skills and camerawork in
a practicaal manner.
- Able to try out doing most aspects of a video based
project (filming, directing etc.)
15. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
- I can’t drive so I’m restricted to going different places
to film at times I can get a lift.
- Can only film on certain days due to differences in the
weather/lighting.
- When filming in different locations I will have to get
lots of footage in case some of it doesn’t look right or is
blurry.
- Will have to work filming times around the cast’s
different timetables.
- Have to plan out the week of filming before I book
equipment to make sure I can get enough done.
16. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Joji – No Fun
Joji (real name George Miller) is a Japanese/Australian
singer, song writer and producer who is often
recognizable due to his former career as a YouTube
personality that focused on satirical videos.
Similar artists/People he has worked with: Trippie Redd,
Rich Brian, Oliver Tree
Joji’s main genre is Lo-Fi but he has also been known to
take elements from trap, electronic and R&B.
17. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
No Fun by Joji is a very interesting song because of the
contrast between the style of the music and the lyrics, It
is an upbeat happy sounding song even though the lyrics
describe being left behind by friends. The music itself
follows a really upbeat yet slow paced style that is
reminiscent of a lot of slightly older pop music much like
other music in the Lo-Fi genre.
18. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
My vision for the music video for no friends is to have a
kind of montage of someone hanging out with their
friends, but as the video progresses the friends will
slowly disappear to match up with the meaning of the
song. As for conventions due to Joji not really
conforming to a singular genre for my video I’m going to
take elements from both rap and pop music videos, the
pop conventions will mainly be based around lighting
and types of shots.
20. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
21. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
I am going to make a montage type video based on Joji’s
song “No Fun”, the intended outcome is for the video to
show someone losing friends over time to coincide with
the theme of the song.
The song I chose has a moody but relatable feel to it
within the subject matter about losing good friends and
missing having fun times with them. I think that the
backing track really helps convey this slightly dark tone
while still remaining upbeat and almost happy sounding.
The list of equipment I may need is: Camera, Tripod, SD
card, Battery, Premier Pro.
22. LOCATIONS
For the location I will do the majority of the filming at
home and possibly some in York, the main problem with
this is the distance from where I live to York, I can
overcome this by going after college. Another problem I
have is the weather because I want to keep a sense of
continuity between shots, I can overcome this by having
some of my roommates do the acting so whenever the
weather is right we can go film.
23. EQUIPMENT
For equipment the main thing I need is a camera, I
assume the SD card and battery will be included with it. I
will hire the camera through college, to do this I will fill
out a form 2 days in advance on blackboard.
Another thing I need is a tripod which I assume can be
hired through the college, if I can’t get one from college I
can borrow one from a friend.
24. FACILITIES
I will edit my videos within college using Premier Pro,
This is the only facility my idea requires.
25. PERSONNEL
Crew: My crew will consist of: Cameron Hiley, Nathaniel
Green, Tom A, Noah Dixon and Lennon Bradley. One
weakness the whole cast shares is their inexperience
with acting, my solution to this is to avoid including
faces in shots as I think facial expressions/reactions are
the hardest thing to act out.
CAST: The cast will be made up of my friends that I live
with, they will be available for a few hours most nights
after college. I will not have to transport them due to the
majority of the filming taking place at home.
27. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
28. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

31. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
The first 20 seconds of the track is the intro which consists of the
backing track without the beat or singing, I can use this section to
establish the setting using panning shots etc.
Between 20-40 seconds the video picks up pace and goes into the
chorus, I will use this section to show close shots of the group
playing basketball.
The song slows down and loses the beat between 0:40-1:00, I plan
to use this part to show some of the group disappearing.
From 1:28 to 1:48 the song slows down A bit but not in the same
way it has done in the previous slow section, I will use this to show
some footage of the main character walking alone.
From around 2:00 onwards the song stays at the chorus for the rest
of the video, I may use this section to show the main character
starting to have fun alone.
In the last 10 seconds of the video the song starts to fade away to
signify the end, for this part I will start to zoom out and have the

Due to unforeseen circumstances I will have to change a few things about
my production, this includes the production group I’m filming with and
the locations.
37. OLD LOCATION
INFORMATION
Location 1: the first location I plan to use is the outdoor
basketball court where I live. The only issue with filming
here is the weather, the solution I have to this is to use
the indoor court.
Location 2: For my second location I need to use a street,
However since this isn’t a focal point I can just use a
random street. The problem with this is weather and
there is no easy solution so I can only film on certain
days.
38. NEW LOCATION
INFORMATION
Location 1: For my first location as part of my new plan I
am going to use a park in york, this is due to my cast not
being able to get to the original location 1.
Location 2: For my second location I need to use a street,
However since this isn’t a focal point I can just use a
random street. The problem with this is weather and
there is no easy solution so I can only film on certain
days.
39. LOCATIONS
Location 1: Rowntree park,
I plan to use this for the shots
of people having fun. I will
most likely use the streets
nearby for the other shots. I
won’t need any other locations
due to the park being so big
as this allows for a variety of
shots.
Location 2: Millenium Bridge
I’m going to use this for the
shots of the main character
alone and having fun with
other people.
