This document contains a student's self-evaluation and reflections on a music video production project. It discusses the student's research process, planning, time management, technical qualities of the final video, aesthetic qualities, audience appeal, and feedback received from peers. The student acknowledges areas for improvement, such as adding more variety in shots, locations, costumes, and actors to make the video more engaging and well-matched to the song. The student plans to apply the lessons learned to strengthen future video projects.
3. Research
• My research touched on many subjects such as camera operation, colour
correction, and editing tips. It was definitely very helpful to have these
guides all easily linked and accessible to me. Underneath each link I had
a few vague points on what the guide talked about. Whilst this definitely
helped to jog my memory on each, I think it would have been a lot more
handy to create a full write up for each guide labelling the essentials so
that if I ever want to reference them I don’t have to read through
the entire thing again.
• Later on I began to research the artist and genre conventions. Although
there weren't many points, I feel like I covered some essentials which let
me get to grips with the artists work and genre. When making notes
about the genre conventions I also included many small explanations on
the effect of each convention and why they are used in the industry. This
was helpful to write out as it let me collect the core essentials in one
place and it helped to create informed decisions towards the project. If I
were to repeat this process in the future I would also do this
4. Planning
• The pre visualisation was definitely one of the strong suits of the planning. It
allowed me to explain a clear image in my head and put it into words which I
would've assumed might make it easier to understand and bring to life when
filming. Especially the first couple as they were easily more detailed then the
rest containing very specific information on each individual shot, costume,
expressions, camera placement, what was happening in the scene, as well as
minor details on lighting and atmosphere. Every visual I wanted in the video
was explained thoroughly in these first few paragraphs however I started to
miss out / skim over details as in the later slides. This was an intentional
choice as I didn’t have as clear an image in my mind about some of the later
scenes so I figured leaving room with broader visualisation explanations
would allow me to experiment on the day to get the feel for the video just
right. Looking back now it would have been more sensible to take out more
time to complete the visualisation to the standard of the first couple of
slides. Leaving room for experimenting on the day of the shoot is in turn
leaving room for error. It would be much safer to have a fully detailed plan
knowing exactly what is going to happen at every moment of the video.
5. Time Management
• I think I managed my time relatively well, especially compared to my
other projects. I managed to complete everything I wanted done on time
and even finished editing the video early (bearing in mind the quality
was below average due to problems aquiring footage). Unfortunatley my
video plan did not come to fruition as there were many complications in
the days before shooting however if I'd had more time I would have liked
to put together a second shoot either using the same video plan or some
sort of last minute back up. With only a few days to edit there was not
enough time to re-schedual for a second shoot but it would have greatly
helped.
6. Technical Qualities
Cooler color
temperature
(correction)
All very similar
shots. Not much
variation.
Only one actress.
No variation in
content
The setting
doesn’t
match the
song /
theme.
In comparison to the official I'm a mess
music video: The official video had many
more people working towards it e.g.
dancers (which there were many of) not
only this but even though the shots were
very similar still, there were more of them
and at least enough variety to differentiate
the scenes and meaning. The camera is
also more varied in terms of distance,
angle and what they portray.
Camera position is
practically the same in
each shot. The only
difference being a single
moving shot later into
thesong
7. Aesthetic Qualities
Altogether, there wasn’t much variation in the video and there definitley wasn’t
any creative. It was ultimatley some overexagerated lip syncing in a forest which
just isnt all that good looking / entertaining. Although I liked the more sureal
lighting and atmosphere it didnt really fit with the videos concept of craziness.
Next time I would hope to get more time to execute the original plan. I feel hat the
time I had was adequate to shoot etc. However not everyoneturned up and we
started late which was to be expected. More contingency time to get the video
together may have resulted in a better final product. I would have definitely got
more people into the video to play certain roles that couldn't be done with one
person. I would have also liked to change the setting to a place that better suits the
song and to use multiple locations at that.
8. Audience Appeal
Overall I think the use of a female lead in the video to accompany the female vocals would
definitely make sense and appeal to the audience. Even though the colors used don’t fit
the theme and concept of the song in my eyes they may appeal to the audience in a
different way purely showing some sort of calmness in the color schemes which may be
appealing to watch. On the contrary, the same point may drive away the audience as the
videos look is contradicting to the song which could be irritating to watch. All in all the
music video presented was very basic and I don’t feel like there is successfully much to
hold an audiences attention.
10. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
• I liked that it was simple and there wasn’t to much to follow. It looked pretty
nice but there wasn’t much variety.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• I think you could add more to the video. More areas and people and props.
Just some more of everything really but not to the point where its overdone.
• You could think about costumes as well and what they show off about
people.
11. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
• The colour tone looked quite good. It fit the setting.
• I like the cuts. Most of them don’t feel unnecessary.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• You need more places to put in your video. It got boring staring at some lass
in a woods for 3 minutes.
• You could do more with the camera like bringing it closer or further. Moving
it more. Changing the angle.
12. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
• Some of the shots were pleasing to look at but it just didn't really fit the
video.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• I didn’t really like the colours or the location. It didn’t really fit the songs
message.
• The costume could have been better picked out to how something about the
character.
• It would have been better if you found a way to get more people into the
video because then you could have created something with a little more
depth
• You could also do this by adding a lot more shots.
13. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
• I need to vary my use of the camera position, distance and angles
• I need to use location that are more in line with the concept of the song
• I need more actors / actresses to fit more roles and create a more in depth
video
• The use of costumes could have definitely created a more in depth video wit
more character.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
• Honestly nothing. There s a lot that can be learned from this video and there
will need to be a lot of work put in in the future to perfect any future videos.
14. Action Plan for future development
• Looking at my peer feedback I understand that there are many issues
with the currently displayed video. Moving forward I would like to
carefully reflect on each of these areas and develop my future videos
based on this feedback as well as any feedback I should receive in the
future.
