3. Proposal
Does your production still reflect your proposed project?
Yes, my final product is still the project that I proposed, it turned out being
pretty close to what I started to plan like the final project turned out kind of
creepy like I wanted at the start. Although some things I said in the proposal
didn't work out though. Such as I didn’t use a different location for each stage
of greif, because of covid I was very limitade to places that I could film at so
the majority was filmed at the same location I just used different angles to
make it look like the location had changed. Even though there is a story line of
the 5 stages of greif in the video it ended up not being very obvious to the
audience.
4. Research
Effectiveness of the research
I feel like my research was very effective, it helped me to learn and get a better
understanding of common themes/conventions that are used in modern
alternative music videos such as they use an exsesive amount of flowers, a lot of
videos have black baths, or some variation of this concept and the main narrative
of the videos is linked to mental health. It helped me to get ideas for the costume
of the video and different effects that I liked and wanted to include. My survey
research also helped me to gage what my target audience is and the type of
videos they like to watch/ the things they look for in a good music video.
What could have been better?
I think I could have done some more reasearch into different music videos and
maybe even looked at some other music generas so I had a wider range of ideas
and insporation for my video. I also think I could have done a better job at
analysing my questionnaire, I should have expanded my answers a bit more.
5. Research
Methods used
I used spider diagrams to lay out all of the information I had collected about
music videos, each bubble was related to a different topic to do with video
production. I tried to put all the bubbles for the same topic in the same place
for each music video slide to make it look a bit clearer. I put pictures of the
answers for each survey question so there is a visual of what the results
accompanied by an analysis of each question on the survey
Missed opportunities
I didn’t put an interview into my research which I should have done so I could
have colected some qualitative data, the qualative data would have helped
me to have a much better understanding of my target audience and the
things they would want to see from my music video. This would have helped
me to reach a higher-grade boundary. I also could have watched a few more
music videos to analyse instead of just the minimum number of videos.
6. Planning: style sheet
What went well
I planned mulitpul collour schemes, so this meant I was able to pick which
scheme worked best when it came to filming and having to buy the props to
match the colour scheme. Having mulitpul choies for the font of the album
cover was really good because I was able to pick the font, I thought matched
the vibe of the video the best. The different layouts for the album cover
helped me to visualise what I wanted my final product to look like.
7. Planning: style sheet
What didn't go well
All three colour schemes all include a lot of similar coloures as each other so
this meant I didn't have a very wide colour range to choose from for the
video. I feel like I could have found a wider range of fonts because the last
two have very similar aesthetics. I could have thought of two album cover
concepts that were a lot more different from each other because the main
thing that changes is just the placement of the song name.
What impact did this have on your final peace
The colour scheme did get altered slightly when production started because I
couldn't get props to match the exact colours I chose. It was realy easy to
choose the font because there was only one that I felt matched the aesthetic
of the cover and video. I made album covers using both of the cover layout
designs but ultimately decided to use the first layout template.
8. Planning: recourses
What went well
I layed out very clearly in tables all the props/equipment/costumes I would
need for both the video and the album cover photoshoot so that it was easy
to read, and I could see at a glance what I needed. I have used pictures
of each item along with the list so I can show what the items are supposed to
look like/similar to. It's also good that I put the location in for each
prop/equipment/costume, so I know where I need each of them.
9. Planning: recourses
What didn't go well
I feel like I could have writen more for the discriptions about what I will need
each prop/equipment/costume peace for. A couple of the props and
equipment I planned to use didn't end up getting used or changed during
production. I didn't end up needing the extra lighting for the bath scene, I
didn't end up using the fake blood on the bears, the shoes had to be changed
because they didn't fit the actress and the back of one of the shoes
disintegrated.
What impact did this have on your final peace
This made it a lot easier to stay organised during the filming of the music
video and photoshoot.
10. Planning: contingences/schedule
What went well
For the contingences I wrote down solutions this was good because it meant I
knew how to solve the problem or work around it if I did run into some issues.
I wrote down the best ways to avoid the most likely hazards this was good
because it meant I knew the safety precautions I needed to take so nothing
bad would happen. Writing out a production schedule was good because it
helped me to keep on time so that I got all the work I needed to do finished in
time. having each task listed in the schedule really helped me to keep on
track and know what I am supposed to be doing at different times.
11. Planning: contingences/schedule
What didn't go well
I feel like I could have come up with a few more contingences and solutions
such as forgetting props (which I did) and how to work around it. For the
hazard section I could have added in a column saying what to do if one of the
hazards did occur in case, we weren't able to avoid it. I feel like I could have
made some parts of the schedule more detailed with better explanations of
what I was going to do.
What impact did this have on your final peace
The biggest potential issues and hazards were clearly listed in the tables, so
it made it a lot easier to know what to look out for/how to prevent or avoid
them during filming and other production stages. I followed the schedule, so
It meant I finished all the production work on time.
12. Time Management
• My time management wasn't great during the filming due to the weather,
we had to rush some of the filming and had to wait a couple of hours for
the snow to stop so we could finish filming the parts that we didn't get
earlier.
• During the rest of the production time, I did really well with my time
management, I stuck to the schedule and I actualy finished the production
a bit earlier than I had planned, which was good because that meant I had
extra time to work on improvements of any other pre-production work.
13. Technical Qualities
I added a leaf texture
to the font because it
added a bit of extra
detail that made the
whole product look
mor proffesional and
added som deffinition
to the text.
I used a glitch effect so
the face would look
distorted giving it a
creepy vibe.
I made the flowers look
half cut and half not to
go with the contrast in
the video, I also
changed the layer type
of the not cut flowers
so they wouldn’t be as
bold and look kind of
ghostly with the third
hand.
I had to cut around the edge because I didn't like
the look of the boarder then I blurred the edges so
it blended in better instead of being so prominent.
I made a second layer of
the flowers and turned
off the red chanel so it
looked similar to the VHS
effect from the video.
We shot the cover In the
studio on a white
background so the
focused was on the
model and flowers.
I edited the white background to be
slightly darker so it wasn't as bright
fitting with the dark colour scheme
better.
14. Technical qualities
Bears are a common feature that
appear in alternative music videos, so I
wanted to incorporate them into my
video
Having beds or
matereses on
their own is
another
common prop
used in alternat
videos, so I got
a blow-up bed
then coverd it
with a blanket,
so it matched
the colour
schem and the
vibe of the rest
of the video a
lot better
Putting the play
on top of the
filter is what
really gives it
the effect that it
was filmed on
an old camera
I made a VHS
effect so that it
looks like these
parts were
filmed in the
past.
I used a pice of fabric I had to use as
a picnic blanket, so the bears weren't
just sitting on the grass it also made
the shot look a lot tideyer.
15. Technical qualities
I kept the VHS
effect on during
the transition,
so it changed
from what is
meant to be the
past to the
future more
smoothly
I zoomed
through the
same bears
eye as the one
that is being
cut because I
thought it
would look
really cool
going from
the past bear
to what is like
now.
I chose to use big metal scisors because they
look kind of like doctor scisors so I thought that
was fitting as she is chopping of the bears head
I used an eye
zoom transition
to break up the
video a bit and
to add some
variation to the
transitions
between clips
16. Technical qualities
I re-coloured
the video to
look a lot
darker and less
saturated to
help set the sad
mood of the
song and
storyline of the
video.
I used flowers that had the dark redish colours in
from the colour scheme, so they didn't look out of
place, flowers (alo of the tim dead/diying) are also
very common props to see in this style of music
video
I chose to flash
between the VHS
filter and normal
footage for this
scene because
she is wearing
the bear as a
mask, so I
thought it would
be a good way to
link this scene to
the 'past', it also
kept the video
more consistant.
17. Technical qualities
I used the
scissors again so
this scen could
link to the one
where she chops
the bears head
because she is
now wearing the
bera head as a
mask.
The VHS effect
stays on for this
part of the video
because the
bears are in the
background, and
this is the last
tim we see
them.
I layered a video
of the bears and
changed the
layer type to
screen so you
can see the
bears, but the
focus is still on
the actress,
This is the last time the bears are shown befor
the song repeats the words "drugs keep stealing
all my friends" I did this because the bears
resemble her friends, and they are now 'stollen'.
18. Technical Qualities
I decided to have
her fully clothed
for this
scene because I
felt like that fit
best with all the
other odd things
that have
happened
throughout the
video.
I chose to end
the video with
the VHS effect
because I
thought it made
the video come
full circle as the
video started the
same way.
Having random items floating in the bath is
also a common feature of videos so I
decided to use peatals so it can relate to
the scene where the flowers are being cut.
Another feature
used a lot in
alternative
music videos is
a black bath,
the bath really
fits with the
video, and it
matches the
colour scheme
much better
than a normal
clear bath
would have.
19. Audience Appeal
• My target audience audience was people ages 16-21 that are a part
of the alternative community, the video was also more aimed
towards females than males as I used more conventions that atract
women. Such as there was a narrative in my video and from the
information, I collected from my survay a narrative is something a
female is more likely to look for. I also tried to use as many
features that are common in alternative videos as possible, like the
bears, flowers, dark lighting/settings, the black bath and
filters/effects that flash a lot. Another thing I learnt from the survey
is that females like it when the settings change quite frequently
which I have tried to do. I think I have appealed to my target
audienc very well because I focused on atracting one group and
gender of people instead of trying to make it something everyone
will like.
20. Aesthetic Qualities
Using the same
flowers as in the
video.
The sticker
makes the cover
look edgy.
The flowers look like
they have the VHS
effect from the video
on them.
The pointy font
adds to the creepy
effect.
The same bear
mask as the video
links them together.
Minimilistic white
background keeping the
focus on the model/so
she stands out.
The same outfit as
the music video.
Same colour
scheme as the
video.
The mask looks like its
glitching this increases the
creepy effect of the mask.
21. Aesthetic qualities
The play made the
VHS effect look
more effective and
real
The picnic rug makes this scene look a lot
neater and like the bears have more of a
purpose they're not just thrown there
The bears add a
creepy effect to
the video
because they
look lifeless
resembling the
actresses dead
friends
Having the bed
so close to the
bears shows how
the actress
wishes she could
be close to
her friends again
The VHS effect
makes the video
look a lot
spookier as you
can tell this was
all filmed in the
past.
22. Aesthetic qualities
She is wearing a black outfit this
resembles she is still mourning
the death of her friend.
The background
isn't as bright as
it would look in
real life this
helps convey the
sad emotions of
the video/song.
The force she is using to rip
off the bears head shows the
strength of the anger she is
feeling.
23. Aesthetic qualities
The flowers add a
pop of colour to
the video and the
action of cutting
them up
contradicts that
the flowers are a
symbol of life and
beauty.
Wearing the
bears head as a
mask gives off
a very creepy
and slightly
scary
and unsetteling
vibe.
Big heavy-duty scissors make this scene look
a lot more dramatic and them being so big
makes this scene kind of unsetteling .
24. Aesthetic qualities
Having a bath
fully clothed
adds to the
peculiaritie of
the video it
also shows
that she just
doesn’t care
anymore.
Black bath
adds to the
spooky
unsettling
theme of the
whole video
The flower petals link this scene to the one where
the flowers are being chopped up, petals floting
make this scene have a slight calming effect.
The lighting in
the bathroom is
a lot darker
than natural
lighting this
makes the
scene look quite
eerie.
26. Feedback 1: Phill
• What did you like about the product?
– Really love the album cover. It works really well
with the video
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– Personaly I'm not sure if the font works with the
mood of the song.
27. Feedback 2: Aaron
• What did you like about the product?
– Was a good video and I liked the VHS filter.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– Only thing I'd say to Improve was the bear parts, I
didn't realy understand why you were cheffing up
the bear.
28. Feedback 3: Hollie
• What did you like about the product?
– It was really good! I really liked the part where you
were walking through the forest. It was really
edgy! I liked the VHS filter too.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– Maybe make the lip-syncing part shorter
29. Feedback 4: Piper
• What did you like about the product?
– The editing on the album cover is really effective and
the cover links nicely to the video, the retro filter on
the video ties everything together nicely and helps fit
the aesthetic of the song.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– The only improvement would be that I think the first
shot of her lying down was quite long, so I'd maybe
add some shot variations to break it up a bit.
30. Feedback 5: Cody
• What did you like about the product?
– I love the whole concept of the product. I think it
was very thought out and planned and it was very
pleasing.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– I think there could've been a wider variation of
shots in the beginning of the music video.
31. Feedback 6: Emilie
• What did you like about the product?
– I liked the bear head part, I thought it matched the
songs vibe and I thought the big scissors cutting the
flowers was such a cool contrast and matched the
song lyrics.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– I think the beginning where there was quite a lot of
me just lip syncing into the camera could have had
something else going on so that it was a llittle bit
more interesting.
32. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
– I agree that I needed a bigger variation of shots at
the beginning of the video.
– I also agree that the retro VHS filter helps to tie
the whole video together helping all the different
parts link nicely.
– I agree with Piper when she said that
the album cover links with the video realy well.
33. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
– I don't agree with Aaron when he said the bear
parts didn’t make any sens. I think the metaphor
of the bear being her dead friend and her doing
anything to get them back worked really well.
– I also don’t agree with Phil saying the font dosen't
work with the mood of the song. I feel like
it captures the creepy aesthetic I was going
for and suits the video and song.
34. Peer Feedback Summary
• The main thing that people said for what I could have improved was how
long the lip-syncing part at the beginning was by adding in a wider range of
shots so she wasn't just lying there for so long.
• Half of the people I got feedback from said for what they liked about
my product was the retro VHS effect that I used throughout the video
because it looked really cool and helped to tie the video together.
• A few of the people said they like the overall vibe of the video and how all
the different parts fit/work well together.
