2. Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
– The primary audience for the Shawshank Redemption
was mainly fans of the book and fans of Stephen King’s
work, as the film was one of his short stories before
adapted into a film. The film was aimed towards fans
of King’s work as they knew that’s how they would
make the most amount of money as the short story
was a best seller.
• Secondary Audience
– But the film did also try to target people between the
ages of 15-30, mainly aiming the film at males, as the
cast is 90% men, considering it is in prison. The
marketing team decided to aim the movie at male
movie goers because of the male dependent cast,
thinking this would make the movie more appealing to
males instead of women.
3. Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
– The primary audience of silence of the lambs are thriller
and horror fans, film goers who love to not be told the full
story, so watching the film is their discovery into the gory
mind of Hannibal Lecter.
• Secondary Audience
– The secondary audience of silence of the lambs are fans
of the books, the fans of the books were the secondary
audience because of at the time the film was released the
book trilogy were not well known, only having a small fan
base.
4. Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
– The primary audience for The Green Mile are males
aged between 30-40, this is because the cast is again
male dominated with only two female cast members.
Targeting men between this age works because that’s
around the same age of the characters in the film so
the men watching can relate to the problems the
characters face.
• Secondary Audience
– The secondary audience for The Green Mile are fans of
King’s work as this is another book of his to be adapted,
this film is also targeted at those film goers who love a
twist, who aren’t given the full story and have to
discover it for themselves as this film is full of twists
and jaw dropping moments.
5. Hypodermic Needle
• Definition
– The definition of the hypodermic needle when used in media terms is when an audience
immediately believes what they are told or what they read by the media.
• Example
– One example of this is fake news, people post and share fake news articles all over
Facebook for example, people don’t take the time to see if the article is real and
immediately share it to all of their friends who then continue to share it. This can then
lead to a lot of people believing in this article.
6. Uses and Gratifications Information
• I use YouTube and the BBC news website for information. For example I use the
BBC news website to find out what is going on in the world and to keep myself
updated, I also use it to check the weather, so I know what the day is going to be
like so I can plan ahead. I use YouTube for information on videogames, for example
when gaming events take place such as E3 and I can’t go to the event I go on
YouTube to see what games have been announced and what new equipment has
been announced.
7. Uses and Gratifications Personal
Identity
• People may find themselves reflected and represented in YouTube videos and
learn certain behaviours from certain YouTubers if people watch that YouTuber a
lot, well known people on the internet have a lot of influence on youth today.
Music groups can also have influence on peoples behaviour, how they dress, act,
their influences, from the YouTuber you watch and the music you listen to, it can
have a lot of influence on the choices you make, information, pleasure and
reinforce you as a person.
8. Uses and Gratifications Integration and
Social Interaction
• I use Facebook messenger, Instagram and Snapchat to interact with my friends, I
use all three for different reasons. For example I use messenger to have general
conversations with friends and make plans. I use Instagram for sending memes and
funny posts to my friends and they send them back. I use Snapchat as a back up if I
need to get in contact with someone and they aren’t on messenger so I can send
them a message on Snapchat, I also use it to quickly let a friend know that I’m
about to go on my PS4 to see if they’re coming on too.
9. Uses and Gratifications Entertainment
• For entertainment I Like to play video games online with my friends, this mainly
takes up all of my free time as I like to ply video games with my friends as much as
possible, it’s a good way for me to have a laugh with them when we haven’t
arranged to meet up so we decide to play video games instead. I also watch a lot
of films for entertainment, I have always been interested and fascinated by films so
I go to the cinema as often as possible and then write a review about the film I
have watched. I also listen to a lot of music, mixing into lots of different genres,
whether it be metal, rap or pop. I like to listen to music as often as I can as it calms
me especially if I’m having a bad day, it’s a good way to escape sometimes.
10. Consumer Generated Content
• Example
– One example of this is when a video game is about to come out and the developers
release what is called a beta to the public, this is the almost finished build of the game
and the developers release it to see how the fans can influence the game and make it
better so the developers can then make the game better for when it is released.
• What are the advantages to media producers?
– Following on from my example the developers would benefit greatly from this as
millions of players could play their beta that means hundreds of hours will be played by
the players who can then give feedback to the developers via an online survey, so then
the developers can take the publics feedback and know what they need to improve and
focus on.
• Why would the audience generate content?
– Media producers make products for their audience, sometimes they need help from
their audience, which I think is a great chance for the audience to have a lot of say on
how something is made, what needs improving and removing, therefore the producers
and the audience can make something together.
