2. Production techniques research
• Research potential production techniques you might want to use or
feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to camera,
editing, story, sound, etc
• You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your research.
• You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might
help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also ask
potential target audience what they think.
• You may need to add extra slides!
• With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or
how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it
completely
• Always think about your investigations links to your intentions and
production!
3. Product 1
When looking at this first picture here you may realise that it's from a video game, because it is,
my first idea is make a music video highlighting the characters life from this video game using a
track that was made for him. In this picture the camera is cinematic, I wanted to research close
cinematic angles like this because I would like to use some in my video and this gave me a good
idea on how to do so.
4. Product 2
Another idea I have for my video is that I would like to use footage of the sun breaking through
trees as a transition shot between scenes in the video to express the mood in the video.
Therefore I watched this video as it showed me the different angles and environments that I can
use for this type of shot.
5. Product 3
Now in relation to this picture my idea waa to use imagery of the night sky like this here and use
it for the music video for example, I was thinking of how I could use this to express the lyrics
used in the track.
6. Genre and artist breakdown
• Think about the conventions of music video and which of these you
feel are the most appropriate for you video and why
• Think about the genre characteristics for your chosen artist – how do
you plan to employ these?
• Which techniques and styles do you think fans of your chosen genre
prefer? What should you expect to see in that type of music video?
• Use the following slides to show your ideas and explain these using
good illustrative examples – this is where your research and
explorations should start. Remember to consider the aspects we
looked at in class [and the academic things from Goodwin, etc].
7. Conventions
• The concept and narrative of my video is to show that even though in
the start of the game the main character Artthur is seen as a bad man
and when he finds out he's dying he suddenly changes to try to be
better. But I am showing my viewer that if you look deeper you'll
realise that Arthur has always tried to be a good man. It's only with
the change in situation that he now realises that he has to do
something before he dies.
8. Genre Chacteristics
• So the track I am wanting to use is an R&B and soul track, therefore
the genre characteristic is always deep and meaningful, these songs
always want to make you think about the lyrics, to really listen to
them and interpret them and create your own meaning. Therefore
that is why I have decided to use this track because I want to make a
video that has a deeper meaning and makes my audience think about
what they are seeing and listening.
9. Chosen approach/justification
• I have decided that for my music video I am going to stick with my
genre conventions as I want to make an impactful music video for my
audience as that is the purpose of the track and the game I want to
use for the most part of the video. I thinking making a deep impactful
music video is better than just making a normal simple video to go
with the lyrics.
10. Experiments
Camera/Editing/Audio Experiments
This is for you to evidence the filming and editing tests we did.
Be prepared to add extra slides.
You can add more experiments as you do them as the project progresses.
11. Experiment 1 - Process
In this experiment I was playing around with different
cinematic angles I can recored from in game to go along
with the track and show that audience the beauty of the
situation and the track
12. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
• In my final product I will include my use of cinematic camera angles from the
game because I think it gives the footage a more dramatic edge that will keep
the audience interested
13. Experiment 2 - Process
Now with this experiment I was trying to capture
what I thought would be a good transition shot
between scenes. But I didn't want to use just
anything for a transition shot so I thought to
myself what would match the mood of the video.
14. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product? What about this process has been notable [positive and
negative]?
• In my final product I will include my real life footage of the sun
breaking through the trees as I think that it relates to the mood of
the video. This whole process has been noteable for me because it
has allowed me to think about the mood of the track and how I will
express this to the audience. Which has been a fun process.
