2. Idea Generation
• Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
• Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles, techniques
and conventions that we have looked at in previous sessions. Explore
how you could interpret the song differently using different methods
• You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images, mind maps,
etc
• For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate these
8. Summary
• 5 strengths of your ideas you could use
• The first strength of my ideas I can use I think is the first idea I thought of which is incorporating
footage from a video game and real life footage. I think I can use this because it's an unconventional
idea which shows creativity.
• The second strength I can use of my ideas I think is that instead of using footage of the video game I
can possibly do the actions of the lyrics like I have described doing in my third idea
• The third strength of my ideas I can use I think is possibly using stock footage of my second and third
idea as the footage would be important to the video and it would be a useful way of gathering the
footage that I wouldn't be able to film.
• The fourth strength of my ideas that I could use is my idea for transition shots from my first idea, I
need to be able to incorporate real and fake footage therefore I am thinking of possibly recording
the sky at day and night to express the mood for the video.
• The fifth strength of my ideas I could use would be the costumes as they would be really easy to get
a hold of and could impact the authenticity of my video
• 5 weaknesses of you ideas
• The first weakness I can see from my ideas is that I decided pretty quickly that I wanted to do my
first idea therefore my other ideas aren't as developed and I can see that quite clearly.
• The secon weakness I can see in my ideas is that in two of my ideas I would need actors for the
parts, this can be a weakness because people are busy and if they let me down that could cause
problems for my video.
• The third weakness I can see is in my ideas is that in my second idea I only came up with an idea for
one song whereas doing it for two as I did in my first mind map
• The fourth weakness I can see in my ideas is that it might be hard to get a hold of some stock
footage that is copyright free that would fit in with my video.
• The fifth weakness I can see in my ideas is that merging footage from a video game and real life
might not work out as well as I think it will, the transitions might not be very good or might be really
easy to tell the difference in footage.
9. Final idea – artist/title/info
• Name of track / name of artist
• Track: Unshaken, Artist: D'Angelo
• Brief biographical background
• Michael Eugene Archer, born 11th of February 1954, better known by his
stage name D'Angelo, is an American singer, songwriter, multi-
instrumentalist and record producer. Along with artists like Erykah Badu,
Lauryn Hill, Maxwell, and collaborator Angie Stone, D'Angelo is associated
with the Neo soul movement.
• Links to other artists
• There are none, he has only worked alone since 1991
• Genre info
• Contemporary R&B - (also known as simply R&B) is a music genre that
combines elements of rhythm and blues, pop, soul, funk, hip hop and
electronic music. The genre features a distinctive record production style,
drum machine-backed rhythms, pitch corrected vocals, and a smooth, lush
style of vocal arrangement.
10. Final idea – track summary
• Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content, duration, pace and
style of the song]
• Unshaken is an R&B/Soul track made by D'Angelo, the track is a normal
length of 3 minutes and 55 seconds. The track opens slowly like a hidden
passage, the verse sets the scene. Our main character is searching, asking
questions of himself and the world around. It seems he is trying to figure out
how he got here, in order to decide where he is going. And as the mantra
continues, it gives way to the next verse, and another opportunity to get
close to this deeply searching and sensual voice: The chorus was inspired by
the words of Sri Paramahansa Yogananda, “You must stand unshaken amidst
the crash of breaking worlds.” It makes perfect sense that a guru known to
have written “the book that changed the lives of millions” is responsible for
such aspirations.
• “Unshaken” radiates more resonance through the soul rousing voice of none
other than renowned R&B smooth talkin, Soulquarian, D’Angelo
11. Final idea – your idea
• Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your interpretation, use of
imagery or narrative, genre conventions, etc]
• The track I have chosen was made for the video game Red Dead Redemption 2,
the song was developed for the main character as he takes his last ride, as he
fully redeems every action he has done in his life.
• Therefore my creative concept for my video is to make a highlights reel of the
characters life going through all of the highlights, from all of the bad deeds he did
all the way up to he realises he's dying and then trying to correct every single
wrong that's done.
• So to start off the video I think I would start off the video with the main character
talking about a bank robbery they are about to, then show the viewer all the
killing thaty happens doing the robbery, a highlight of killing, the the music
would stop and it would transition to the scene where he finds out he's dying
and the music would kick back in and the rest of the video would be showing the
character trying to correct everything wrong he's done
12. Final idea – techniques and styles
• Video techniques/style/conventions to be used [include how you
intend to implement these]
• I intend on using lots of fades for the transitions between real life and
fake footage, I intend on doing this because I think it makes the
footage look a lot smoother when going between shots. I also intend
on using fades in the volume to bring the music out slightly to impact
the viewer with what's happening in the video and then bring the
music back in so they know that the lyrics are relating directly to
what's happening in the video.
13. Potential research targets
• For the idea I would like to do I think my potential research targets
are fans of the game Red Dead Redmption 2, People who are fans of
D'Angelo and fans of his type of music which is R&B and Soul. I think
these are all research targets because my music video will be aimed
at all these groups of people therefore I have to know how to aim at
them, how to make it appealing to them and hit all those boxes
