a. (S) Prior History: Detaineelived in a village of 5 or 6 houseshis entirelife. There
wereapproximately6,000membersin his tribe thatcamefrom six families/fathers,all of
whom live in thevillage of Zanikhel,AF. Detaineehasno formal education.Detainee
claimedhe traveledoutsideAfghanistanonetime, when he traveledto a refugeecampin
Miram Shah,Pakistan(PK) to escapethe SovietUnion invasion. Detaineereturnedto
Afghanistanafter approximately 10yearsto resumefarming.
b. (S) Recruitment and Travel: Detaineeresidedin Afghanistanandclaimedno
recruitmentinto, or participation in extremistactivity.
c. (S) Training and Activities: Detaineereceivedno military training. Detainee
reiteratedthat he is a farmer from the small village of ShumbaWat, AF andhe hasno idea
why he continuesto be detainedby the US. Detaineestatedthat he hasno information
concerningTaliban,Al-Qaida,ACM, Tablighi Jamat,or opium relatedactivities.

(believedto be approx20 January2002),when helicopterslandedtroopsnearKhowst, AF.
Detainee,MohammadGul, US9AF-00457DP(ISN 457) andGul ZarnanUS9AF-00459DP
(ISN 459)werecapturedtogether.US Forcescapturedthemat ISN 457's homein the
village of Zanikhel nearKhowst, AF. Detaineewas soonaftertransfenedto Bagram
DetentionCenter.

o (S/A.trF)Detaineemaintainedminimal associationwith PachaKhan Zadra and
JaluddinHaqqani,two tribal memberswho participatedin ACM activities. (Analyst
Note: TheseACM operationsarebasedon tribal determinationto maintain control over
historically tribal lands. The fluid natureof Afghani govemmentfactionsnecessitated
that thesetwo tribal leadersresortto an ever-changinglist of alliancesandadversaries
evenamongstthemselves.They will engageandattemptto disrupt any organization
interfering with their goal of autonomouscontrol over tribal territories.)
o (S/A{F) Detaineeadmittedhe knows PachaKhan Zadran,aGorzai tribal elder
andleader,andregardshim asa "good man." Zadran'sfocus is on maintainingtribal
lands. He perpetratedoperationsagainstUS interestsanddetaineepossiblysupported
Zadranby providinglow-level logisticalsupport. Additionally, detaineestatedthat
his tribewasbehindZadranandhe hadvisiteddetainee'shouseon oneoccasion.
(AnalystNote: Zadran'srole astribal elderaffordshim unquestionedloyalty and
respectfrom fellow Gorzaitribemembers.)

interestsin Afghanistan.

During interrogation,an interrogatorindicatedthat ISN 458 was trying to deflect
importanceaway from ISN 459, thus ISN 459's statementthat detaineewas Taliban
could be a further attemptto deflect attentionfrom himself.
o (S/A{F)ThemodifiedICOM VHF transceiverdiscoveredin thehousereportedly
wasfoundin thepossessionof ISN 459,thusproviding furtherevidencethat
detainee'snephewpossiblyhadTalibanconnections.
o (S/A{F) Two lettersfrom Haqqaniwere found that requestedthat the Khowst
governortakecareof ISN 459.)
o (S//I.{F)Detaineeis sociallyandpolitically tied to the Gorzaitribe. Detaineepossibly
providedhis houseto localtribal ACM personnelbasedon premisethattribal members
areaffordedcertainloyalties,which generallydominategovernmentlaws and/or statutes.
o (S/AIF)DetaineeandISN 458 bothidentifythemselvesasfarmersandvehemently
denybeingTalibanor Al-Qaida. During interrogationsanddetaineerecreationtime, both
detaineeandISN 458 statedthat they did nothing wrong andcannotunderstandwhy they
arestill beingdetained.
c. (FOUO) Detainee's Gonduct: Detaineeis assessedasa LOW threatfrom a detention
perspective.Detainee'soverallbehaviorhasbeencompliantandnon-hostileto the guard
force andstaff. Detaineecurrently hasthreereportsof disciplinary infractions.
