knownAl-Qaidafacilitator,AbuNasimal-Tunisiin residencesthatareassociatedwith
anotherAl-Qaidafacilitator,Abu SulaymanAl-Jazairi.Bothof hisyoungerbrothers,Abdul
MatimandMohammedYusef,arealsoknownto beassociatedwith AbuNasim.Detainee's
closeproximityto somanyprominentAl-Qaidaassociateswouldatminimumhaveallowed
himto assimilateknowledgeof theclandestineactivitiesandwhereaboutsof Al-Qaida
facilitators,al-Tunisiandal-Jazairi,alongwith histwo youngerbrothers.To date,detainee

Detaineewasbornin 1973in NuristanProvince,AF. Detainee'sfamilyleftAfghanistan
whenhewasyoungandmovedto theRaghaganRefugeeCampnearBajavor,PK. Hehas
livedin Pakistanfor morethantwentyyears.His is maniedandthefatherof five. Heis a
SunniMuslim. Hestateshehasworkedasajackhammeror rockdrill contractorand
clothingsalesmanin thepast.
b. (S) Training and Activities: Hemostrecentlyworkedasataxidriver,drivingacar
hisbrother-in-law,AbdulNasimAl-Tunisi,akaIsmail,purchasedfor him. Hesplithis
profitswithhimaspayment.Healsolivedin ahomepurchasedby Al-Tunisi.Al-Tunisi
allegedlygotdetainee'ssisterpregnantoutof wedlockcausingahastymarriageto be
arrangedto avoidshame.Detaineewasforcedto givehissisterawayattheweddingbased
onthispressure.HestatedAl-Tunisiconstantlychangedresidencesandhadtheresidencein
hiswife'sname.Heclaimedinnocenceandstatedhewasunaware,in theslightestsense,of
Al-Tunisi'sactions,orthoseof Al-Tunisi'sbrothers,becauseheworkedlongdaysanddid
notseeor interactwiththem.Hiswifeandchildrenlivedathiswife'ssister'sresidencenot
with him atthehome,whichwasraided.Heclaimedheis partof theBanjourTribal
Agency.
c. (S) Capture Information: Detaineewascapturedonsuspicionof workingfor Al-
Qaida. On2l September2002,detaineewasarrestedby Pakistaniauthoritiesfollowinga
raidonasuspectedAl-Qaidasafehousewheredetainee'sbrother-in-law,Al-Qaidafacilitator
AbuNasimAl-Tunisialsolived. Detaineehadfourcounterfeit$100dollarbillsin his

(Analyst note: Al-Jazain andal-Tunisi areknown associatesthat haveworked
togetherfor sometime. The fact that the sameindividual owned all threelocations
andthat al-Tunisi was stayingat the location linked with Al-Jazairi; strongly
indicatethatall threelocationshousedAl-Qaidaassociates.It is reasonableto
assumethat all residentshousedin the locationswere awareof Al-JazairiandAl-
Tunisi's clandestineactivities. This conclusionis supportedby the factthatAl-
QaidamemberAbdul Basir washousedin a residenceright acrossthe streetfrom
theresidenceal-Tunisianddetaineelived in.)
o (S//NF) SeniorAl-Qaida Lieutenant,Abu Zubaydah,statedAl-Jazafuiwas a trainer at
Khalden Campandthenjoined Al-Qaida. He was an expertin explosives. Abu Zubayda
also statedthat Abu Nasim Al-Tunisi trained at CampDeRuntaandtrained in explosives
andpoisons. Abu Zubaydawrote a letter of introduction for Al-Tunisi sohe could work
with the ItalianMuslims. Al-Tunisi becamewell known for bringing in falsepassports
for Al-Qaidafrom Italy.
o (S/A{F) Detainee,al-Tunisi andAbu SulaymanAl-Jazairihad strongassociationsto
the HIG. Detaineewasprobably acting asa bodyguardfor Abdul Ghafour,Hezb-I-
Gulbuddin(HIG) commanderfor theNuristanProvince. Analystnote:HIG is a Tier I
groupwith stronglinks to Al-Qaida.)
o (S) Al-Jazairihasbeenalignedwith Hekmatyarsincetheearly 1990's. He
provided lodging andfinancial supportto families in the refugeeareain Pakistan
wheredetaineelived duringthe 1990'sandearly2000'svia Al QaidaandtheHIG.
o (S) Al-Tunisi wasin a battalionthat fought alongsideGulbuddin Hekmatyar
(probablyagainstthe Russians).
o (S) Detaineewasbom andraisedin Nuristan Province,AF andreportedthat
during recentyearshe would returnto Nuristan for monthsat time wherehe sold
jewelry.
o (S/ {F) Haji Abdul Ghafour,who controlsthe HIG operationsin the Nuristan
Province,hasfour bodyguards,oneis listedasJumadin.(Analystnote: With
detainee'slinks to Al-Jazairi,andAl-Tunisi andin turn their links to Hekmatyarand
the HIG anddetainee'sadmittedconstanttravel to Nuristan for work, it is very
probablethat detaineeactedasthe bodyguardfor Haji Abdul Ghafour.
. (S) Detaineewascapturedwith four USD $100counterfeitbills.
o (S) "Islamic extremistsgroupshavehistoricallypreferredto useItaly for safe
haven,weaponsacquisition/smuggling,financeandcounterfeitdocumentation".
(Analyst note: Thoughthis is purely circumstantialdocumentationin regardto
detainee,it shouldnot be ignoredthat al-Tunisi hasalwaysbeenassociatedwith
facilitating falsedocumentationfrom Italy. It would be logical to assumethat he
would alsofacilitate the smugglingof counterfeitcurrencyfrom Italy. This might

Yusef(variantYusif), 16yearsold, bothof who aresuspectedto be associatesof Al-
Qaidafacilitator Abu Nasim al-Tunisi. Both were alsoliving in the sameresidenceas
Abu Hasimal-Tunisi. Detaineehasprovidedphysicaldescriptionsof both Matim and
Yusef.
c. (S//NF) Detainee's Conduct: Detainee'sbehaviorhasbeengenerallycompliant
towardsdetentionpersonnel.
