European thinkers developed new ideas about government and society during the Enlightenment. Philosophers applied reason to challenge existing views and concluded that reason could solve all human problems. Enlightenment ideas spread throughout Europe with some monarchs enacting limited reforms, but faced opposition from nobility and the church. The spirit of optimism and new philosophies emboldened calls for further reforms and revolutions.
