The Atlantic slave trade originated between the 1500s and 1800s when millions of Africans were captured and sold as slaves in the Americas. Enslaved Africans endured horrific conditions during the Middle Passage voyage, where up to 20% died chained in cramped quarters. Many slaves ended up working brutal conditions on plantations throughout the Americas. Over 400 years, the slave trade devastated societies in West Africa by taking future leaders and dividing Africans, while also profoundly enriching economies in the colonies through forced labor.
