America s National Pastime Of Baseball Essay
ssociation was born
Introduction
Since its grand entry in the 19th century, baseball has evolved to be one of the most popular sport
nationally and to be known as America s national pastime. This multibillion dollar industry attracts
millions of fans worldwide throughout different regions. The origin of baseball is believed to have
evolved from a ball and bat game called Seker Hemant played by ancient Egyptians dating as far back
as 2,500 BCE. Fast forwarding time, modern day baseball began with the formation of the Cincinnati
Red Socks in 1869 following with the establishment of the National League in 1876 and later the
American Association in 1901. (Auerbach, 2016) It wasn t until 1903 the Major League Baseball
(MLB) was born. Baseball was seen as a recreational activity that differentiated between cities due to
different versions and rules of the game, baseball did not strike its popularity until the Civil war,
documentation shows high interest in this particular sport during this time period.
The Major League today consists of 30 teams that represent cities throughout the United States and
Canada. In the early years of the MLB was most known for its baseball wars, legal disputes, bidding
of players, threats between leagues and broken contracts. Throughout the years baseball has been
associated with union avoidance and hostility over pay establishments, benefits and work rules.
(Auerbach, 2016) Players have been subject to a restrictive system through which a player

The Process Of Decision Making
The process of decision making can be easily understood as selecting one course of action over other
courses actions available. There are also steps that are involved in making decisions. These steps
include: (1) pinpointing the problem; (2) identifying the cause; (3) setting objectives; (4) formulating
alternative courses of action; (5) evaluating alternatives against organizational objectives; (6) choosing
the best course of action; and (7) implementing and evaluating the decision (Holzer and Schwester
2011). Now while these mentioned steps of making decisions seem extensive they are generally how
decisions are made. Also in decision making there are numerous amounts of models that emerge and
try to explain how all decisions in administrations are made. With decision making comes actors who
implement and enforce the results of these decisions. With regards to the topic intended for this essay,
the actor is the American administration and their implementation of policies regarding the recent
outbreak of Ebola and how these administrators are enforcing policies with respect to the public. This
paper specifically will revolve around Graham Allison s three decision making models in his book
Essence of Decision Making: Explaining Cuban Missile Crisis and the way his models analyze the
decision making process. Allison s three different models will give us different lenses to look at and
analyze how the American administration is handling the Ebola situation here in the United

Raymond Starkey s Popular Mechanics
Among all the short story in Starkey s text, the one that really caught my attention is the Popular
Mechanics by Raymond Carver. The main element I focused on while reading is his style of writing.
The application of a very intense tone is nicely play out through the story and even within the first
sentence, his chose of word already uses the setting to foreshadow the problematic future. In most of
the cases, whenever we think about snow, it will be more about its momentary beauty of falling pure
white than its consequence of melting into dirty water. However, after more reading, I actually realize
how this intention also creates more anxieties. The entire story runs on a fast pace structure and the
lack of quotation marks sharpens the

The Implications Of Genetically Modified Foods
Our technological powers increase, but the side effects and potential hazards also escalate. Alvin
Toffler. In the 1980s, a new science field was developed called Genetic Modification (GM) or Genetic
Engineering for uncountable purposes. One of the applications was to create food crops that are
altered in a way to be beneficial to the producer or the consumer. Genetically modified foods could be
defined as foods derived from organisms which their genetic material has been altered in a way that
does not naturally occur, through the insertion of a gene form a different organism. Genetic
modification techniques permits the introduction of new traits and provides better control over the
desired traits than the previously used methods like selective breeding. The first commercial sale
product of GM food was in 1994, while the biggest marks for GM crops are soybeans, maize and
oilseed rape. Nowadays, the determined value of the foods managed in the United States which holds
at least one genetically modified ingredient is 70%. The release of genetically modified foods in
markets has triggered a debate around the world, where proponents believe that it holds many
promising benefits, while opponents are worried about its negative impacts on the environment and
the health of human beings.
One of the main arguments made by the supporters is the prominent advantages in the crops of
genetically modified food. Crops are modified to increase the level of protection against plant

East Timor Crisis Analysis
Post independence and UN assistance, East Timor remains drastically behind other nations
developmentally. Infrastructure concerns are a major domestic and government services are in some
locations are non existent. Strengthening its local economy has been key and is an area of East
Timorese success. East Timor boasted a GDP growth rate of 11.7% in 2014 when at independence the
nation experienced little economic activity. In 2000, the government took in a revenue of 1.6 million
total, mostly as duties on goods purchased by UN officials in East Timor. To reach this point, East
Timorese officials have capitalized on oil reserves worth roughly $40 billion just off its coast. Prime
Minister Gusmao made oil production a critical component of the ... Show more content on

For decades all of the high skill positions were restricted to the Indonesian occupying body of East
Timor, adding a barrier to anyone in East Timor hoping to advance. Combined with the purge in
response to East Timor s independence referendum, outside aid has been essential to guiding its
development.
Political leadership in East Timor however has been an obstacle in the process of achieving actual
sustainable growth. Many leaders date to the period of Indonesian occupation and their leadership
styles reflect this. One example is the leadership style of its former Prime Minister Gusmao. Gusmao
was chiefly accused of leading neo patrimonially as a product of the resistance era mentality. Part of
these accusations come from his tendency to award contracts and consistently make purchasing
decisions without consulting the actual members of his cabinet. When advisors were consulted, they
were frequently other members of resistance groups dating back to Indonesian occupation. East Timor
s own laws are written to prevent such events, but the mentality of guerilla leadership has lead to the
idea officials can act unilaterally without a dialogue. Gusmao was replaced in 2015, but this makes up
the majority of the young nation s lifespan. Gusmao continues to hold office as the minister of
Finance, and several other major government positions are occupied by other resistance leaders.
Corruption is not an uncommon occurrence in developing nations, but

Effects Of Alcohol On Social Behavior
The presence of alcoholic beverages seems ubiquitous today, and it has been that way for thousands of
years. Nowadays, it can be found at sporting events, social gatherings, with meals, and in many other
environments. Alcohol is a psychoactive drug (it alters mood and potentially consciousness) and is
specifically classified as a depressant. Depressant drugs slow down the nervous system and
physiological functioning while promoting a relaxing, drowsy feeling. In the case of alcohol, these
aforementioned effects typically arise when heavy doses of the drug are consumed. In low to moderate
doses, however, the opposite happens. The alcohol has a mood elevating effect, along with many other
physical and social symptoms that are associated with it. This essay will discuss some of the effects
that alcohol has on social behavior. First, the mechanism of action alcohol has on the brain will be
explained, followed by paragraphs that discuss how moderate amounts of alcohol influence social
behavior, sexual behavior, and driving ability. The fundamental basis for how alcohol effects the body
starts at the neuronal level. A neuron is another name for nerve cell. The human brain contains trillions
of these nerve cells, which transmit information to and from each other, and subsequently to the rest of
the body. Neurons have dendrites, which contain receptors that receive chemical messages from other
nerve cells. These receptors are influenced by chemicals called neurotransmitters, which

Essay on The Great Plague Of Europe
The Great Plague killed nearly half of the European population during the fourteenth century. A
plague is a widespread illness. The Illness was also known as the Black Death . Most of the European
people believed the plague was the beginning of the end of the world. They were scarcely equipped
and unready for what was to be entailed. It was by far one of the worst epidemics yet to be seen in
those times.
The Great Plague of Europe made its way all throughout the continent and its population. The plague
started on the western side of Europe; off the coast of Italy. It arrived by sea between the fall of 1347
and through early spring 1348. Italy was affected so hard that only one out of seven victims would
recover in those parts. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While others, were only effected by direct contact. It was thought to have been sustainable by even
touching clothing or other such items of the infected. Conditions of the fourteenth century were also a
contributing factor. Famine had been an arising issue due to the number of overpopulation. Because of
this, their immune systems began to weaken. Europeans were susceptible to disease because many
people lived in crowded surroundings in an era when personal hygiene was not considered important
(Dowling). The cities were unsanitary and littered with germs, making it easier to sustain such
diseases. Unhealthy habits were conducted and medical advances had not yet been made. Doctors
themselves had not known what to advise. No prescriptions had worked. There was no cure to what
was happening. Most were not even aware of what was impending upon them. Anything that could
would be tried, in hopes of living. People were becoming desperate.
The great plague came in three different forms. The types of illness differed in symptoms, spread and
sufferings. The bubonic plague was the diseases most common form. It was named this due to
swelling called buboes of the victim s lymph nodes. These tumors could range in size from that of an
egg to that of an apple (The Black Death). The longest expectancy with this form of illness didn t
often exceed one week. The second variation of plague was known as the pneumatic

Animals Should Not Be Treated
Animals forced to live in farm factories being used to produce food are mistreated on the daily basis.
Forced to eat foods that are harmful for them, they are also forced to live in tight housing conductions
where they are sometimes unable to stand or move around forced to be in one spot which cause them
to have sours under there bodies from not moving. These animals keeps under this conditions live
under a lot of street from seeing there young being taken away from them or maybe how some
chicken farmers don t allow there animals to see sunlight which put stress on the animals. Humans do
these things to animals because they only think of the benefit for them but most people don t see the
harm that is done to these animals and also the harm that is done to the environment. Do these things
to these animals is not right and we as humans don t have the right to treat another living thing this
way all living things should be treated with respect regardless of what it maybe, I know that all living
things can be treated like humans but we should at least insure that all living things pain and stress
should be kept to a minimum and should be eased when it can whenever possible. The waste that is
produced in farm factories by the animals is harmful to the environment. In the United States alone
farm animals generate more than 1 million tons of manure per day, three times the amount generated
by the country human population. All the waste that is produced by these factory farms

A Room of One s Own Perception
In his novel The Hours, author Michael Cunningham describes his characters in a very unique way.
Cunningham portrays his characters through the descriptions of rooms in which each person spends
most of their day. The rooms become a window to each character s personality and personal situation.
Through reflection of her own room, Clarissa Vaughn comes to realize that she is completely unhappy
with the way her life has turned out. Similarly, Cunningham uses Laura Brown s time in her kitchen
and her two hour stay in a hotel room to assess her mental standing. These spaces are not only
observed by their inhabitants, but also by those close to them. Clarissa s room is observed by her old
friend Louis and the reader is given much of Richard s room descriptions through the assessment of
Clarissa. These observations by others help the reader gain a sense of not only how the certain
character considers their own self, but also how they are perceived by others. Each individual life
intersects with another character, which link together characters that seemingly would otherwise not
be connected. These observations regarding each room come to not only embody the mental state of
each character, but also represent a form of imprisonment for each.
Richard is depicted through his apartment room as sullen and wasting away from his disease and
depression. Special emphasis is given in particular to the decrepit, ostentatiously broken and worthless
chair (59). The chair comes to symbolize

Currently, there are two major of database management systems which are used to deal with data, the
first one called Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) which is the traditional relational
databases, it deals with structured data and have been popular since decades from 1970, while the
second one called Not only Structure Query Language databases (NoSQL), they have been dealing
with semi structured and unstructured data; the NoSQL term was introduced for the first time in 1998
by Carlo Strozzi and Eric Evans reintroduced the term NoSQL in early 2009, and now the NoSQL
types are gaining their popularity with the development of the internet and the social media. NoSQL

Symbolism In Fahrenheit 451 Analysis
Andrei Tarkovsky said, A literary work can only be received through symbols, through concepts for
that is what words are . In Fahrenheit 451 s society, the reading of books is illegal and punishable by
death. The protagonist Guy Montag stands against the burning of the books and attempts to be happy
with his life, even though he is a fireman. Ray Bradbury, uses many literary devices in his story, but
the most important device is symbolism. In Fahrenheit 451, a handful of symbols advance the plot by
giving the novel a deeper meaning that what appears on the surface. Each symbol included in the
Fahrenheit 451 is a piece of Guy Montag s life that is helping his journey. In part one of Fahrenheit
451, the first symbol to appear is the hand. When Bradbury mentions Montag s hands, he is
foreshadowing that the hand will become an important metaphor throughout the book His hands had
been infected, and soon it would be his arms. He could feel the poison working up his wrists and into
his elbows and his shoulders, and then the jump over from shoulder blade to shoulder blade like a
spark leaping a gap (Bradbury 38). The spark of doing what is right is moving from Montag s hands to
his entire body. He states that his hands were ravenous and were hungering for books. Montag does
not know why he is stealing the books, but his hand is moving without any thought. Before he begins
to question society, Montag s hands are the force that carries him through his workday. They pump the
kerosene and light the torch while Montag holds a unmoving smile on his face. When he steals the
books, he says that his hands are acting upon themselves with curiosity. His hand represents that
Montag is thirsting for a knowledge that only books can provide. Montag, unlike Mildred, is not
satisfied with the knowledge that is given from the televisions and society. Montag s hands symbolize
his consciousness to do what is right and the force that is pushing him to search for knowledge. For
the firemen in Fahrenheit 451, the idea of spreading a fire that consumes knowledge and culture is a
great feeling. It was a pleasure to burn. It was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things
blackened and changed. With the brass novel in his

There Will Come Soft Rain Analysis
Technology is a useful servant, but a dangerous master, a quote said by Christian Lous Lange. I find it
astounding how attached we are to our technological devices.Technology has attached itself to us and
infiltrated our lives. Moreover, we walk around as if technology is cane for us to lean on. If we aren t
careful, we could become too dependent on that cane to the point where it becomes a wheelchair.
Also, in The Veldt, by Ray Bradbury, the children in the story become so dependent on technology to
do everything for them, that they can t even perform basic everyday tasks without the help of
technology. I don t want to believe that this is where society is heading, spiraling downhill into a

Consequently, we are willingly falling into a trap set for us by technology. It is time for us to decide
whether or not we are going to start fighting back or not. Do we want to just become submissive to
technology and let it eat us whole? The differences between the two texts, by Ray Bradbury, The Veldt
and There Will Come Soft Rain are evident, but the similarities are striking. In the first place,
technology is taking over and controlling our lives and one reason why it is, is because we depend on
technology to perform simple tasks for us. In both The Veldt and There Will Come Soft Rains, the
humans of those stories have a deep emotional connection to technology that they wouldn t know
what to do if it was taken away from them. You ve let this room and this house replace you and your

2.3 Social/Culture Factor
When it comes to the Social factors, population, income distribution, social mobility, lifestyle, attitude
towards work and leisure, and education level are detailed elements of Social factors. For Cochlear,
attitude towards healthcare among the society is the main influencing factor. In developing countries
like India and South East Asia, the average healthcare awareness is low. To prove this, we only need to
quote words from Chundu, Manchaiah, Stephens and Kumar (2013), it appears that parentally
reported outcomes could be related to many factors including the hearing healthcare system with the
costs involved for the implanted individuals and their families . As a countermeasure, according to the
Economic Times (2010), Cochlear Limited will spend up to 15 million in India, to increase awareness.
Additionally, the Social factors are often described as culture difference. Cochlear used localization of
the communication strategy to deal with culture difference: In Europe, it cooperated with Loud Group
and designed a comprehensive program of Public Relationship, which included traditional media,
broadcast, activity, and on line DeafBlog. While in Cuba, it linked itself with Cuban Revolution s

Summary Of Accuracy In Island Of The Blue Dolphinss
Accuracy in Island of the Blue Dolphins Accuracy varies depending on the purpose by which an
author writes a story. Some authors may choose to base their story purely on facts, some may stick to
being entirely fictional, and the rest pick and choose facts and fiction. Island of the Blue Dolphins
entails the journey of a young native girl, Karana, who becomes stranded on her home island until her
eventual rescue. This story in particular is based on that of a Nicoleno woman, the Lone Woman.
However, facts were left out regarding what happened in real life. In Island of the Blue Dolphins, the
author, O Dell, inaccurately depicts the Lone Woman s situational, historical, and archaeological
relevance. O Dell undermines the Lone Woman s relevance in terms of the situations Karana, the main
character, faces throughout Island of the Blue Dolphins. Karana watches her father die , which is an
aspect O Dell created to develop his story and is not historically evident. O Dell s personal views of
what a mother should be affected the accuracy of his story because he felt that a mother should not
forget her child . This explains why his book shows how Karana returned to the island for her brother
instead of being like the Lone Woman who returned for her child. O Dell even makes up the concept
of public and secret names , which furthers his inaccuracy because this shows that he added the names
as an element to build on the symbolism. Even more so, Captain Baranov s offer of trade goods

The Roles Prospect Park Plays for Brooklyn
Prospect Park is a 585 acre park located In Brooklyn, a borough in New York City. This borough in
particular was in great need for an open space for activities and relaxation, which is exactly what this
park provided. Parks are a very important piece of land to a town because it gives people the
opportunity to improve their physical health and parks also help strengthen communities because it
gives people more opportunities to interact with one another. Public parks are especially very
important to have in a big city like New York City because a park gives people a chance to get out of
the hustle and bustle, and relax and unwind. The two creators of Prospect Park named Frederick Law
Olmstead and Calvert Bowyer Vaux also designed and created a park in Manhattan called Central
Park. Central park is eight hundred forty acres of city owned land and is a piece of land that was much
needed in 1857 when it was officially opened. Vaux and Olmstead became two well known architects
by building Central Park that soon became a big success, but didn t equally benefit both the rich and
the poor. Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmstead worked in a partnership to build Prospect Park.
Vaux and Olmstead had similar goals for Prospect Park as they did for Central Park, but they agreed
that their goals were better accomplished with Prospect Park because they were able to fix any
mistakes they had made in the creation of Central Park. The two of them were able to introduce a

Sexual Inequality, Disease And Despotism
Despite some of the truths in this quote like the idea that agriculture may have led to sexual inequality,
disease and despotism , agriculture revolution still had an immensely positive impact. Following the
creation of agriculture came a sedentary life style, and these two concepts led to the significant
increase in human population, as it was a more stable approach to living. It is only human nature to
want more, want to succeed, and want to better them selves and maintain dominance. If the adoption
of agriculture had not occurred, another concept with as many negatives would have been adopted in

Such a demand called for enhancement in technology and tools. Tools were not a new concept during
the creation of agriculture, yet, with the agrarian age and those to follow came the advancement of
tools. Tools transitioned from the first stone hand axe4 to unique tools specifically for agriculture,
such as the plow, and other tools that had been used since the earliest of times were upgraded. Food
storage and systems food processing became a necessity to these agricultural based societies.
Agriculture changed and bettered previously used tools in a way that wouldn t have been possible
without the agrarian world. Following these creations came the irrigation system. Some societies faced
the challenge of flooding spoiling crops. The use of these large and complex irrigation systems gave
them control of the water that raises their crops. Though an irrigation system wouldn t have been a
necessity in a world without agriculture, this system inspired and birthed new inventions that have
aided different aspects of life that humanity could not go with out. Alongside these advancements
came the advancements regarding architecture. As agriculture played the greatest role in sedentary
civilizations, it is also the motive behind the growing interests and improvements in architecture.
Through out the Indus Valley during the third millennium B.C.E. vast ground plans and impressive

Enlightenment Era Research Paper
The Enlightenment is marked as a period in time that challenged people to think for themselves. While
it did not mean removing a belief in God from a person s life, it usually meant refraining from reliance
on God and instead relying on oneself. Prior to the Enlightenment, there stood few influential people
in America who branched away from the Puritan lifestyle; however, that quickly changed as changed
during the Enlightenment period. J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas
Jefferson, and Thomas Paine were important figures in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries who
exhibited an enlightened way of thinking, which helped to inspire the thoughts of future generations.

In his writings, he eloquently shared the enlightened idea of individual thought and liberty. Jefferson
wrote of the self evident truths ...that all men are created equal and have inalienable rights inclusive of
life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; ... (663). The concept of life, liberty, and the pursuit of
happiness endorsed the idea that when a person is able to determine their own pursuits through their
individual ability, they are able to discover their individual liberties. In addition, the Enlightenment s
ideology coursed through Thomas Jefferson s vision of a government formed by deriving their just
powers from the consent of the governed (663). Jefferson and his peers believed in the liberal political
thought that the people formed the government, which was answerable to those they represented.
Jefferson eschewed the idea of absolute authority and tyrannical rule as he wrote, that whenever any
form of government becomes destructive...it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it. (663). He
relayed the enlightened intellectual s belief that it is the duty of the people to dispose of despotic
regimes (663). Of Particular interest is the idea that Thomas Jefferson and many American colonists
ascribed heartily enough to the progressive ideas of individualism and freedom that they were willing
to go against their governing

Essay On Genetic Change
( removed HTML ) How is the Field of Human Genetics Changing? ( removed HTML )
Compared to just fifteen years ago the applications and horizons of genetic science have expanded
enormously, far beyond simply describing how DNA contributes to the formation of life here on earth.
The most important practical advances have built on the completion of the Human Genome Project in
2003, started in 1990. At the associated research cost of over $3 billion US dollars (c.$2.7 billion
actual), a combined research initiative succeeded in fully sequencing the genomic makeup of one
human.
The prototype for human gene sequencing via chemical analysis that this process gave to science has
been refined over the last decade. Continuous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The complete implications and structure of our individual, unique genetic codes are still not fully
understood. However, genetic sequencing and research in the biological sciences have opened up the
potential to diagnose and treat genetic illnesses and key health vulnerabilities through sequencing
analysis at all stages of life. Doctors are better placed to identify the root genetic causes of disorders
and illnesses, as advances in associating certain bits of genetic code to certain outcomes have
expanded the number of known genetic links to maladies from 60 in 1990 to over 5000 (as of 2013).
Future analysis of so called junk DNA with no obvious associations to gene expression will form a
large part of raising that number even further.
Individual genomic analysis allows for better targeted medication and the identification of tumor
causing DNA code. Pre natal genetic screening for genetic disorders and disabilities in a fetus can also
be performed via blood testing, reducing the need for other, invasive forms of medical testing. The
newly developed gene editing tool, CRISPR, also offers the possibility of eliminating or changing
defective genomic sections easily. While designer babies may still be science fiction, these recent
advances in genetic technology have taken us much closer to the possibility and ethical implications of
creating bespoke human beings.
From this, it seems that genetic

Out of the different preferences, I found myself associated with characteristics of both the Sensing

validates that. T (Thinking) According to the Typology Test (1998 2015) I have a moderate preference
for Thinking over Feeling by 47%. The Four Preferences describes individuals with this preference as
people that make decision based on logic and reason (Personality Page, 1998 2014). This assessment
is valid in comparison with my personality. I often think about logic and reasoning. I could recall
instances in the past where I have been frustrated for someone s lack of reasoning through situations. I
find this reasoning to be similar to the Hesed concept of Liberty University s Covenant Model for
Organizational Behavior. This concept is described as doing things that you want to do instead of what
you are forced to do (Fischer, n.d.). To me it is a logical concept that proves the advantages of the

Analysis Of The God Of Small Things
Perceiving through the gender and sexually lens in the novel The God of Small Things, it have
illustrated the severity of gender oppression and discrimination through examination of the marital and
intergender relations like patriarchy, gender roles and love. Specifically in the novel, Ammu,
Mammachi and Baby Kochamma are all female characters and that they have experienced horrible
discriminations and oppressions due to their gender, religion and statuses which have torn them
between traditional norms and modern attitudes. Sadly speaking, their private love relationships are
actually socially and politically regulated to emphases of caste and religion. Reversing the natural
uncontrollability of who to love, in what way and to what extent, results in equally unnatural
insurrections and obstructions of love relationship. The love laws are basically to put or set boundaries
between the upper caste and lower caste which they are not allow to have any sexual relationship
besides working as intensive labor. Women who are married are expected to be a good house wives
and to serve their husband. This novel have demonstrated gender oppression, sexism and
discrimination against women. When the female characters attempt to challenge or disobey the
customs, laws, values of social and cultural boundaries, they commit moral transgressions which
ultimately lead them toward their death and ruination. Therefore, majority women doesn t have an
option but to accept or adapt to the

Comparing Women In Athens And Sparta
Women in Athens and Sparta were treated completely different. Women in Sparta were viewed more
equally, while the women in Athens were treated like slaves. Women in a Greek city/state known as
Athens, were not educated, and were treated the same if not worse than slaves (Athenian, 2005). In
Athens, Women lived in a society completely dominated by men (O Pry, 2012). This all ended when
the women of Sparta (a Greek city/state) were seen overcoming these issues. The life of a woman in
Athens was completely different than a Spartan. Women were treated differently, in Sparta they could
manage the land, have their own public opinion, and were treated equal as men, while women in

Spartan women definitely over ruled the other Greek city/states. Both Athenian and Spartan women
still had no political rights, but they could give their own political opinions to men (O Pry,2012). The
women in Athens couldn t leave their homes, therefore they couldn t talk to men. In Sparta the women
ran all estates and had all rights to go out in public (Fleck, 2007). In Athens, Greece No women,
foreigners, or slaves were considered citizens (O Pry, 2012). This changed in Sparta when the women
came out ruling their city/state. Spartans educated them much in the same way as the boys attending
school (O Pry, 2012). While in Athens, had little to no education. In Athens no women had a choice of
who they married. This was all decided by the father. The women in Athens did have the right to
divorce, but had to get permission from her husband first, and had the chance of losing custody of her
children. In Sparta women had the right to marry and divorce as needed. If a woman s husband was at
war to long they had the right to remarry (Athenian, 2005). This was something researchers have
never seen before causing them to become very confused on this situation. Even though Sparta came
out looking strong they had their downfalls. When the population of children started to go down,
because the expenses were going up, the helots came in to attack (Like they did every year). The
helots defeated them due to the military downsize. This caused Spartans to believe women were the
cause, Spartans lost all the land they conquered in Messenia, and were now just like all the regular
Greek city/states. Change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end (Robin
Sharma). In the end it probably turned out not to be a bad idea

In 1989 Pete Rose, one of baseball s greatest, lost all the respect he had gain in his successful career.
That year, the league had brought to there attention that Pete Rose was a chronic gambler. Eventually
Pete Rose ended up being banned from baseball. Now he wants a chance for a spot in the Hall of
Fame, a place for baseball s greatest. The question of whether or not Pete Rose should be accepted
into the Hall of Fame has been a source of great controversy in the baseball community. The author,

commissioner of baseball will not even listen to Rose s case. Facts like these make the reader side
with Rose before even hearing each side s case. Leland appeals to the reader s emotions in this case
because most people feel that even the lowest of people deserve a second chance, a chance for Rose to
reform his lifestyles. Leland quotes Rose saying, Even Charles Manson gets a hearing every two years
. Leland agrees that Rose deserves a chance.
Leland argues that Rose is banned because he may have bet on baseball. Here he makes the reader feel
as if the case against Rose is not credible. Leland examines the case against Rose and finds that it is
flawed, and severely imbalanced. It did not present any exculpatory evidence . He also points out, to
take away from the credibility of the charges, that the Washington D.C. bar dismissed the case after
seeing the report against Rose. This information makes the reader think that someone is out to get

Independent of the genome screens, evidence suggests that the region on chromosome 15q11 13
contains a gene or genes relevant to Autism. (Dr. David Pauls 2003). Basically, there are suggestions
that the chromosome 15q11 13 is somehow mutated, deleted, or duplicated, causing this disorder to
transpire. In addition to genetics, environmental factors can influence Autism; though they are not
greatly supported ideas, they can t be entirely ruled out. In the UK there have been reports of the
measles vaccine having a part in causing this disorder. (Dr. David Pauls 2003). Newer studies have
even shown that prenatal care before a woman even conceives reduces the risk extensively. Woman
who did not take a daily multivitamin in the three months before conception and during the first month
of pregnancy were almost twice as likely to give birth to a child with ASD as a woman who had taken
a daily multivitamin. (The Harvard Mental Health Letter 2011). Multivitamins contain a lot of helpful
vitamins to maintain a healthy pregnancy, but researchers suggest that the folic acid is the most
significant influence that reduces the risk of a child born with ASD. (The Harvard Mental Health

America s National Pastime Of Baseball Essay ssociation was born Introduction Since its grand entry in the 19th century, baseball has evolved to be one of the most popular sport nationally and to be known as America s national pastime. This multibillion dollar industry attracts millions of fans worldwide throughout different regions. The origin of baseball is believed to have evolved from a ball and bat game called Seker Hemant played by ancient Egyptians dating as far back as 2,500 BCE. Fast forwarding time, modern day baseball began with the formation of the Cincinnati Red Socks in 1869 following with the establishment of the National League in 1876 and later the American Association in 1901. (Auerbach, 2016) It wasn t until 1903 the Major League Baseball (MLB) was born. Baseball was seen as a recreational activity that differentiated between cities due to different versions and rules of the game, baseball did not strike its popularity until the Civil war, documentation shows high interest in this particular sport during this time period. The Major League today consists of 30 teams that represent cities throughout the United States and Canada. In the early years of the MLB was most known for its baseball wars, legal disputes, bidding of players, threats between leagues and broken contracts. • 3. The Process Of Decision Making The process of decision making can be easily understood as selecting one course of action over other courses actions available. There are also steps that are involved in making decisions. These steps include: (1) pinpointing the problem; (2) identifying the cause; (3) setting objectives; (4) formulating alternative courses of action; (5) evaluating alternatives against organizational objectives; (6) choosing the best course of action; and (7) implementing and evaluating the decision (Holzer and Schwester 2011). Now while these mentioned steps of making decisions seem extensive they are generally how decisions are made. Also in decision making there are numerous amounts of models that emerge and try to explain how all decisions in administrations are made. With decision making comes actors who implement and enforce the results of these decisions. With regards to the topic intended for this essay, the actor is the American administration and their implementation of policies regarding the recent outbreak of Ebola and how these administrators are enforcing policies with respect to the public. This paper specifically will revolve around Graham Allison s three decision making models in his book Essence of Decision Making: Explaining Cuban Missile Crisis and the way his models analyze the decision making process. Allison s three different models will give us different lenses to look at and analyze how the American administration is handling the Ebola situation here in the United ... The main element I focused on while reading is his style of writing. The application of a very intense tone is nicely play out through the story and even within the first sentence, his chose of word already uses the setting to foreshadow the problematic future. In most of the cases, whenever we think about snow, it will be more about its momentary beauty of falling pure white than its consequence of melting into dirty water. However, after more reading, I actually realize how this intention also creates more anxieties. The entire story runs on a fast pace structure and the lack of quotation marks sharpens the ... • 5. The Implications Of Genetically Modified Foods Our technological powers increase, but the side effects and potential hazards also escalate. Alvin Toffler. In the 1980s, a new science field was developed called Genetic Modification (GM) or Genetic Engineering for uncountable purposes. One of the applications was to create food crops that are altered in a way to be beneficial to the producer or the consumer. Genetically modified foods could be defined as foods derived from organisms which their genetic material has been altered in a way that does not naturally occur, through the insertion of a gene form a different organism. Genetic modification techniques permits the introduction of new traits and provides better control over the desired traits than the previously used methods like selective breeding. The first commercial sale product of GM food was in 1994, while the biggest marks for GM crops are soybeans, maize and oilseed rape. Nowadays, the determined value of the foods managed in the United States which holds at least one genetically modified ingredient is 70%. The release of genetically modified foods in markets has triggered a debate around the world, where proponents believe that it holds many promising benefits, while opponents are worried about its negative impacts on the environment and the health of human beings. One of the main arguments made by the supporters is the prominent advantages in the crops of genetically modified food. Crops are modified to increase the level of protection against plant ... Infrastructure concerns are a major domestic and government services are in some locations are non existent. Strengthening its local economy has been key and is an area of East Timorese success. East Timor boasted a GDP growth rate of 11.7% in 2014 when at independence the nation experienced little economic activity. In 2000, the government took in a revenue of 1.6 million total, mostly as duties on goods purchased by UN officials in East Timor. To reach this point, East Timorese officials have capitalized on oil reserves worth roughly $40 billion just off its coast. Prime Minister Gusmao made oil production a critical component of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For decades all of the high skill positions were restricted to the Indonesian occupying body of East Timor, adding a barrier to anyone in East Timor hoping to advance. Combined with the purge in response to East Timor s independence referendum, outside aid has been essential to guiding its development. Political leadership in East Timor however has been an obstacle in the process of achieving actual sustainable growth. Many leaders date to the period of Indonesian occupation and their leadership styles reflect this. One example is the leadership style of its former Prime Minister Gusmao. Gusmao was chiefly accused of leading neo patrimonially as a product of the resistance era mentality. Part of these accusations come from his tendency to award contracts and consistently make purchasing decisions without consulting the actual members of his cabinet. When advisors were consulted, they were frequently other members of resistance groups dating back to Indonesian occupation. East Timor s own laws are written to prevent such events, but the mentality of guerilla leadership has lead to the idea officials can act unilaterally without a dialogue. Gusmao was replaced in 2015, but this makes up the majority of the young nation s lifespan. Gusmao continues to hold office as the minister of Finance, and several other major government positions are occupied by other resistance leaders. • 7. Effects Of Alcohol On Social Behavior The presence of alcoholic beverages seems ubiquitous today, and it has been that way for thousands of years. Nowadays, it can be found at sporting events, social gatherings, with meals, and in many other environments. Alcohol is a psychoactive drug (it alters mood and potentially consciousness) and is specifically classified as a depressant. Depressant drugs slow down the nervous system and physiological functioning while promoting a relaxing, drowsy feeling. In the case of alcohol, these aforementioned effects typically arise when heavy doses of the drug are consumed. In low to moderate doses, however, the opposite happens. The alcohol has a mood elevating effect, along with many other physical and social symptoms that are associated with it. This essay will discuss some of the effects that alcohol has on social behavior. First, the mechanism of action alcohol has on the brain will be explained, followed by paragraphs that discuss how moderate amounts of alcohol influence social behavior, sexual behavior, and driving ability. The fundamental basis for how alcohol effects the body starts at the neuronal level. A neuron is another name for nerve cell. The human brain contains trillions of these nerve cells, which transmit information to and from each other, and subsequently to the rest of the body. Neurons have dendrites, which contain receptors that receive chemical messages from other nerve cells. These receptors are influenced by chemicals called neurotransmitters, which ... The Illness was also known as the Black Death . Most of the European people believed the plague was the beginning of the end of the world. They were scarcely equipped and unready for what was to be entailed. It was by far one of the worst epidemics yet to be seen in those times. The Great Plague of Europe made its way all throughout the continent and its population. The plague started on the western side of Europe; off the coast of Italy. It arrived by sea between the fall of 1347 and through early spring 1348. Italy was affected so hard that only one out of seven victims would recover in those parts. The ... Conditions of the fourteenth century were also a contributing factor. Famine had been an arising issue due to the number of overpopulation. Because of this, their immune systems began to weaken. Europeans were susceptible to disease because many people lived in crowded surroundings in an era when personal hygiene was not considered important (Dowling). The cities were unsanitary and littered with germs, making it easier to sustain such diseases. Unhealthy habits were conducted and medical advances had not yet been made. Doctors themselves had not known what to advise. No prescriptions had worked. There was no cure to what was happening. Most were not even aware of what was impending upon them. Anything that could would be tried, in hopes of living. People were becoming desperate. The great plague came in three different forms. The types of illness differed in symptoms, spread and sufferings. The bubonic plague was the diseases most common form. It was named this due to swelling called buboes of the victim s lymph nodes. These tumors could range in size from that of an egg to that of an apple (The Black Death). The longest expectancy with this form of illness didn t often exceed one week. • 10. A Room of One s Own Perception In his novel The Hours, author Michael Cunningham describes his characters in a very unique way. Cunningham portrays his characters through the descriptions of rooms in which each person spends most of their day. The rooms become a window to each character s personality and personal situation. Through reflection of her own room, Clarissa Vaughn comes to realize that she is completely unhappy with the way her life has turned out. Similarly, Cunningham uses Laura Brown s time in her kitchen and her two hour stay in a hotel room to assess her mental standing. These spaces are not only observed by their inhabitants, but also by those close to them. Clarissa s room is observed by her old friend Louis and the reader is given much of Richard s room descriptions through the assessment of Clarissa. These observations by others help the reader gain a sense of not only how the certain character considers their own self, but also how they are perceived by others. Each individual life intersects with another character, which link together characters that seemingly would otherwise not be connected. These observations regarding each room come to not only embody the mental state of each character, but also represent a form of imprisonment for each. Richard is depicted through his apartment room as sullen and wasting away from his disease and depression. Special emphasis is given in particular to the decrepit, ostentatiously broken and worthless chair (59). The chair comes to symbolize ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Symbolism In Fahrenheit 451 Analysis Andrei Tarkovsky said, A literary work can only be received through symbols, through concepts for that is what words are . In Fahrenheit 451 s society, the reading of books is illegal and punishable by death. The protagonist Guy Montag stands against the burning of the books and attempts to be happy with his life, even though he is a fireman. Ray Bradbury, uses many literary devices in his story, but the most important device is symbolism. In Fahrenheit 451, a handful of symbols advance the plot by giving the novel a deeper meaning that what appears on the surface. Each symbol included in the Fahrenheit 451 is a piece of Guy Montag s life that is helping his journey. In part one of Fahrenheit 451, the first symbol to appear is the hand. When Bradbury mentions Montag s hands, he is foreshadowing that the hand will become an important metaphor throughout the book His hands had been infected, and soon it would be his arms. He could feel the poison working up his wrists and into his elbows and his shoulders, and then the jump over from shoulder blade to shoulder blade like a spark leaping a gap (Bradbury 38). The spark of doing what is right is moving from Montag s hands to his entire body. He states that his hands were ravenous and were hungering for books. Montag does not know why he is stealing the books, but his hand is moving without any thought. Before he begins to question society, Montag s hands are the force that carries him through his workday. They pump the kerosene and light the torch while Montag holds a unmoving smile on his face. When he steals the books, he says that his hands are acting upon themselves with curiosity. His hand represents that Montag is thirsting for a knowledge that only books can provide. Montag, unlike Mildred, is not satisfied with the knowledge that is given from the televisions and society. Montag s hands symbolize his consciousness to do what is right and the force that is pushing him to search for knowledge. For the firemen in Fahrenheit 451, the idea of spreading a fire that consumes knowledge and culture is a great feeling. It was a pleasure to burn. It was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed. With the brass novel in his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I find it astounding how attached we are to our technological devices.Technology has attached itself to us and infiltrated our lives. Moreover, we walk around as if technology is cane for us to lean on. If we aren t careful, we could become too dependent on that cane to the point where it becomes a wheelchair. Also, in The Veldt, by Ray Bradbury, the children in the story become so dependent on technology to do everything for them, that they can t even perform basic everyday tasks without the help of technology. In the first place, technology is taking over and controlling our lives and one reason why it is, is because we depend on technology to perform simple tasks for us. • 19. Summary Of Accuracy In Island Of The Blue Dolphinss Accuracy in Island of the Blue Dolphins Accuracy varies depending on the purpose by which an author writes a story. Some authors may choose to base their story purely on facts, some may stick to being entirely fictional, and the rest pick and choose facts and fiction. Island of the Blue Dolphins entails the journey of a young native girl, Karana, who becomes stranded on her home island until her eventual rescue. This story in particular is based on that of a Nicoleno woman, the Lone Woman. However, facts were left out regarding what happened in real life. In Island of the Blue Dolphins, the author, O Dell, inaccurately depicts the Lone Woman s situational, historical, and archaeological relevance. O Dell undermines the Lone Woman s relevance in terms of the situations Karana, the main character, faces throughout Island of the Blue Dolphins. Karana watches her father die , which is an aspect O Dell created to develop his story and is not historically evident. O Dell s personal views of what a mother should be affected the accuracy of his story because he felt that a mother should not forget her child . This explains why his book shows how Karana returned to the island for her brother instead of being like the Lone Woman who returned for her child. O Dell even makes up the concept of public and secret names , which furthers his inaccuracy because this shows that he added the names as an element to build on the symbolism. The complete implications and structure of our individual, unique genetic codes are still not fully understood. However, genetic sequencing and research in the biological sciences have opened up the potential to diagnose and treat genetic illnesses and key health vulnerabilities through sequencing analysis at all stages of life. Doctors are better placed to identify the root genetic causes of disorders and illnesses, as advances in associating certain bits of genetic code to certain outcomes have expanded the number of known genetic links to maladies from 60 in 1990 to over 5000 (as of 2013). Future analysis of so called junk DNA with no obvious associations to gene expression will form a large part of raising that number even further. Individual genomic analysis allows for better targeted medication and the identification of tumor causing DNA code. Pre natal genetic screening for genetic disorders and disabilities in a fetus can also be performed via blood testing, reducing the need for other, invasive forms of medical testing. The newly developed gene editing tool, CRISPR, also offers the possibility of eliminating or changing defective genomic sections easily.
