RefWorks is a citation management tool that allows users to organize references into categories, create bibliographies, and insert references directly into Word documents. It can be accessed through the library website. References are added to RefWorks and then inserted into a Word document using the Write-N-Cite plugin, which syncs the document with the user's RefWorks libraries. RefWorks automatically updates the bibliography when new references are added to the text. The tool supports changing referencing styles and has additional features like editing references.

Why use RefWorks?
As we have seen RefWorks can help us
collect our references. It will also:
•Allow us to organise our references into
categories.
•Create a bibliography.
•Insert references directly into a word
document.

RefWorks is accessible via
the Library website.
When you open it, it looks
like this.
Note the ability to create
folders, allowing you to
store your references in
categories or themes.

We can add references
into a Word document.
On campus Word has an
extra tab, it will either be
called ProQuest or
RefWorks.
Select this and then click Log-in.
We need to sync our document with our RefWorks
libraries.

In RefWorks select Tools and
Write-N-Cite.
Copy and paste the log-in
code into the log-in box in
Word.
If you use Word at home you may not see the RefWorks
tab. However, you can install it from the Tools > Write-N-
Cite page. There are downloads available to enable you to
use this function on your own computer.

We can see now that we are logged in, Word and
RefWorks are now connected.
The options buttons are now activated and we can start
to add references to our work.

Place the cursor in the text where you want the
reference to appear.
Select Insert Citation > Insert New.
A new box appears
showing you the folders you
have created in RefWorks.
Select the appropriate
reference and click OK.

Notice that our reference has now been
added into the text.
We can also add a reference list at the
end of our work.

Place your cursor at the
end of your work.
Then select Bibliography
Options and Insert
Bibliography
Any subsequent
references you add to the
text will automatically be
added to the reference list.

There are many more features
available including editing
individual references to add a
page number for example.
And, at the click of a button we
can change the referencing
style. (Use the Style button)
