Urea treatment is a technique for improving the nutritional quality of low-quality roughages like crop residues by applying urea. Urea degrades through microorganisms into ammonia, which binds to the roughage increasing its nitrogen content and digestibility. The recommended treatment applies 5% urea by weight of the roughage along with 0.3-1 L of water per kg of roughage. The roughage and urea solution are mixed and packed airtight in a pit for 2-4 weeks to allow the chemical process to occur before being fed to livestock.
