- #2 Hi, I’m Darlesa Cahoon and I work along with Jamie for the Port of Seattle at SeaTac Airport. I guess I should tell you a little bit about my background and how I got here. It’s an interesting story of intrigue and scandal … no, not really, but it may be an interesting tale about how you never know what experiences might lead to exciting new things in life. When Jamie asked me to present at this forum I thought gee, what can I offer? I’m not an exceptionally good speaker, I get pretty nervous and I’m certainly not the brainiest philosopher you’ve ever heard okay, hey I admit it. But I realized that what I do have to offer you is an abundance of enthusiasm and passion about what I do (any one who works with me will agree I’m sure – as they roll their eyes at me) and … the other thing I can offer is that I can show you some neat stuff to make your training lives easier. So, oh yes back to my tale of intrigue … I actually grew up taking way too many music lessons entered college on a vocal performance scholarship. I did tons of great musical theatre roles and performances which of course eventually led me to an exciting career in life and disability insurance sales and marketing. After 12 years in insurance I was fortunate enough to have had the insurance department eliminated and I was forced to try something different … food marketing which opened my eyes to the fact that that I found insurance less than riveting … several twists and turns and two children later and I now find myself Producing Video, narration, choosing and editing music, designing graphics and directing movies all attributing to producing training programs that are pleasing and motivating . So …. This morning should flow as follows … Overview of how new technology has changed our options for training delivery and then I am so excited to have 3 experts in their field who can share a little about a training technology they use well and show you examples of what they do, next I’d like to share with you a variety of tools from free cool little widgets you can find on the internet and use to more expensive and complicated learning tools you may or may not be interested in using in your own training program. Then we’ll wrap up with hopefully lots and lots of questions and answers and I intend to not only show you a few things you’ve never seen before but expect to learn some cool new ideas from you. - #4 We are fortunate at SeaTac to have 6 smart & talented individuals each with a different area of expertise who make up our airport Training Dept. I am so lucky to be able to do work that I love and feel passionate about and that is finding and using technology when we need it to make training delivery easier, more efficient and cost effective and I’d like to hope, a little bit more fun too. What is really great about getting together like this with other airport trainers is that no matter which airport you train in we have so much in common. We all have FAA, TSA & FEMA compliance training to accomplish, correct? We all deal on some level with customer service and hr topics too. We all have 24 hr 365 day operations so we have the complexity of getting to all these people to train them, plus we have a wide variety of types of workers to train from bus drivers to airfield managers and many tradesmen who don’t have a desk and may not have computers. We accept that a ruling could be made which could change any or all of our training tomorrow and compliance is not optional so we accept the need at times to get a lot of training content out to a lot of people sometimes very quickly. What else do we have in common? What have I missed? But there are certainly many factors that make us different too right? The size of our airport, the area of the country we are in, how much management support we have for training which leads to how much money you can spend and employees you have dedicated to developing and delivering training, politics of your organization, history of your organization. What else? So the cool thing is that as a collective we have found so many solutions to similar problems and every time we are able to share our training solutions, even if our airports are completely different, we have managed to help each other take a fresh second look at the way we are training currently and think of things in a new way. Training Technology has changed dramatically in the past 10 years hasn’t it? Doesn’t it seem like you see some new high tech “solution” about every week? Does it seem impossible to keep up with the latest, the newest training delivery technology? Well it is – it’s impossible. It’s funny when I started preparing for this portion of the program. We set the agenda a while ago and I’m the training systems specialist at Seatac I agreed to talk about training tech, but when I went back to see what we had named this section I started in to Jamie’s office to tell her Oh my gosh, we have to change the name of that talk it’s really wrong. I don’t want to show them what’s new in today’s training technology – I want to show them what is not so new, I want to show people what works, I want to talk about what other people are really using, not the newest, coolest thing that is going to suck away their time and resources, that might be too difficult for learners to adopt and possibly not amount to getting any more training out to any more people in a more efficient way. If there is one thing that is sure it’s that there will always be new technology AND that not everyone adapts to it easily. Here’s a short clip only 2 minutes, some of you may have seen it before, it’s from a Norwegian television show which I think illustrates this fact very well.
