Plant tissue culture involves growing plant cells, tissues or organs in an artificial nutrient medium under sterile conditions. It requires sterilized explants, culture medium containing appropriate nutrients, growth regulators and gelling agents. The basic steps are sterilization of explants, inoculation and culturing under appropriate light and temperature. Subculturing is done to produce more plantlets. Differentiation and organogenesis produces shoots, roots or callus based on growth regulator levels. Hardening acclimatizes tissue culture raised plantlets to field conditions. Benefits include mass propagation of plants, improving traits and producing disease free plants.
