Pythium
Pythium is a genus of aquatic or soil-dwelling fungi that can cause diseases in plants. It has 92 known species with a cosmopolitan distribution. Pythium infects plant parts above and below ground, causing diseases like damping off, soft rot, and root rot. It has branching filamentous hyphae and reproduces asexually through zoospores, conidia, and aplanospores or sexually through oogonia and antheridia. Infection leads to pale, shriveled seedlings and brown lesions on roots. Control methods include soil treatments, adequate spacing, and lowering humidity to prevent excessive moisture that allows Pythium growth.
Mucor
Mucor is a genus of fungi that commonly occurs in soil and organic substrates. It has a coenocytic mycelium composed of branching, multinucleate hyphae that spread through the substrate to absorb water and nutrients. Mucor reproduces both asexually and sexually. Asexually, it produces sporangiospores inside sporangia at the ends of erect sporangiophores. It can also reproduce through oidia and chlamydospores under different environmental conditions. Fertilization results in a sporophyte embedded in the gametophyte that produces spores through meiosis, completing the alternation of generations between haploid gametophyte and diploid sporophyte generations.

Nostoc is a genus of cyanobacteria that is commonly found in alkaline soils, moist rocks, water ponds, streams, and lakes. The body, or thallus, of Nostoc consists of many filaments made up of rounded cells arranged in a chain. The filaments are embedded in a jelly-like mass and covered by a gelatinous sheath. Cells contain a centroplasm and chromoplasm but not a true nucleus. Nostoc reproduces asexually through fragmentation of filaments, formation of hormogonia, or production of thick-walled resting cells called akinetes. It can fix atmospheric nitrogen and plays an important ecological role through photosynthesis.
