This document discusses time scheduling and network analysis techniques used in civil engineering projects. It introduces critical path method (CPM) and program evaluation and review technique (PERT) for scheduling project activities and calculating completion times. CPM uses deterministic time estimates for each activity, while PERT allows for probabilistic activity times. The document outlines the key steps for constructing a network diagram, including representing activities as arrows and events as nodes. It also discusses rules for drawing network diagrams and different types of charts used in scheduling like Gantt, bar and milestone charts.

It is now-a-days very important for the people to send or receive articles like imported furniture, electronic items, gifts, business goods and the like. People depend vastly on different transport systems which mostly use the manual way of receiving and delivering the articles. There is no way to track the articles till they are received and there is no way to let the customer know what happened in transit, once he booked some articles. In such a situation, we need a system which completely computerizes the cargo activities including time to time tracking of the articles sent. This need is fulfilled by Courier Management System software which is online software for the cargo management people that enables them to receive the goods from a source and send them to a required destination and track their status from time to time.

3. INTRODUCTION
What is Scheduling?
Scheduling is the laying out of the actual activities of the project in time
order in which they are to be performed and calculating the manpower
and material requirements needed at each stage of production, along with
the expected completion time of each of the activity.
It is intended to match the resources of equipment, materials and labour
with project work tasks over time.
A-O-A System (Activity on arrow system)-
• An activity is graphically represented by an arrow.
• The tail end and head end of arrow represent start and finish of an
activity respectively.
4. PROJECT MANAGEMENT
• Project management is evolved to coordinate and control all project
activities in an efficient and cost effective manner.
• The salient features of a project are:
• A project has identifiable beginning and end points.
• Each project can be broken down into a number of identifiable activities
which will consume time and other resources during their completion.
• A project is scheduled to be completed by a target date.
• A project is usually large and complex and has many interrelated
activities.
5. SIX MAIN FUNCTION OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT-
• Planning
• Organizing
• Staffing
• Directing
• Coordinating
• Controlling
6. NETWORK CONSTRUCTION
• A network is the graphical representation of the project activities arranged
in a logical sequence and depicting all the interrelationships among them.
A network consists of activities and events.
• ACTIVITY-
• An activity is a physically identifiable part of a project, which consumes
both time and resources. Activity is represented by an arrow in a network
diagram. The head of an arrow represents the start of activity and the tail
of arrow represents its end.
• DUMMY ACTIVITY-
• An activity, which is used to maintain the pre-defined precedence
relationship only during the construction of the project network, is called
a dummy activity. Dummy activity is represented by a dotted arrow and
does not consume any time and resource.
7. EVENT-
An event represents the accomplishment of some task. In a network
diagram, beginning and ending of an activity are represented as events. Each
event is represented as a node in a network diagram. An event does not
consume any time or resource. Each network diagram starts with an initial
event and ends at a terminal event.
8. FULKERSON’S RULE-
• Each node is represented by a circle and numbered by using
the Fulkerson's Rule.
Following steps are involved in the numbering of the nodes:
• The initial event, which has all outgoing arrows and no incoming arrow, is
numbered as 1.
• Delete all the arrows coming out from the node just numbered (i.e. 1).
This step will create some more nodes (at least one) into initial events.
Number these events in ascending order (i.e. 2, 3 etc.).
• Continue the process until the final or terminal node which has all arrows
coming in, with no arrow going out, is numbered.
9. RULES OF DRAWING NETWORK
DIAGRAMS-
• Rule 1: Each activity is represented by one and only one arrow in the
network.
• Rule 2: No two activities can be identified by the same end events.
• Rule 3: Precedence relationships among all activities must always be
maintained.
• Rule 4: Dummy activities can be used to maintain precedence
relationships only when actually required. Their use should be
minimized in the network diagram.
• Rule 5: Looping among the activities must be avoided.
10.
11. NETWORK TECHNIQUES
• There are two popular tools used for analysis of Network Diagram
• CPM (Critical Path Method)
• PERT (Program Evaluation & Review Technique)
CRITICAL PATH ANALYSIS-
• It was developed in 1956 / 1957 by Remington Rand and Du-pont to
help schedule maintenance projects in chemical plants and construction
projects.
• Critical Path Method is a systematic scientific method based on principle
of time estimates to perform a detailed analysis of Network in an
application of Project Management.
12. • The CPM (critical path method) system of networking is used, when the
activity time estimates are deterministic in nature. For each activity, a single
value of time, required for its execution, is estimated. Time estimates can
easily be converted into cost data in this technique. CPM is an activity
oriented technique.
PERT( PROGRAM EVALUATION & REVIEW TECHNIQUE)-
• A pert chart is a tool used to schedule, organise, and coordinate tasks within a
project.
• It was Developed by U.S navy in 1950s to manage the polaris submarine
missile program.
13.
14. ACTIVITYTIMES-
(i) Earliest start time
(ii) Earliest finish time
EFT = EST + Activity time
(iii) Latest finish time
LFT = TL of head event
(iv) Latest start time
LST = LFT – Activity time
16. CPM SYSTEM –AOA
AOA (Activity on arrow system)-
• The tail end and head end of arrow represent start and finish of an activity
respectively.
• Tail event signifies commencement status of the activity.
• Head Event signifies completion status of the activity
• Arrow signifies deployment of finite resources over a finite period of time.

17. CONCLUSION
As a result, the continued development of easy to use computer
programs and improved methods of presenting schedules have
overcome the practical problems associated with formal scheduling
mechanisms. But problems with the use of scheduling techniques will
continue until managers understand their proper use and limitations.
