The document describes a proposed target detection and classification system using seismic and PIR sensors. The system uses PIR sensors to detect moving objects and seismic sensors to classify the targets as human, animal, or vehicle. A PIC16F877A microcontroller monitors and controls the sensors. It sends status messages about detected targets to a monitoring section via GSM. The proposed system aims to improve efficiency over existing UGS systems which have high false alarm rates and power consumption issues.

1. TARGET DETECTION AND CLASSIFICATION USING
SEISMIC AND PIR SENSORS
Abstract:
Unattended ground sensors (UGS) are widely used in industrial monitoring and military
operations. Such UGS systems are usually lightweight devices that automatically monitor the
local activities in-situ, and transfer target detection and classification reports to the processing
center at a higher level of hierarchy. Commercially available UGS systems make use of multiple
sensing modalities (e.g., acoustic, seismic, passive infrared, magnetic, electrostatic, and video). It
is necessary that the monitoring system at borders must prove to be more efficient. Here in this
paper a system based on Seismic sensor and PIR sensor is designed to find the target which is
moving on the ground.
Existing system:
In the existing system the Unattended Ground Sensors are used in target detection. The
efficiency of the existing system is limited by false alarm rates. Also power consumption
becomes a consideration in the existing system.
Proposed system:
In the proposed system PIR and seismic sensors are used in target detection. The PIR
Sensor is used to track down whether the moving object is living body or machine. If it is living
body, the seismic sensor is used to track down whether it is human being or animal based on the
absorbed signals. If it is vehicle, then seismic sensor is used to classify the type of vehicle
moving on the ground. All these process are monitored and controlled using PIC16F877A
microcontroller. The status is sent through GSM as a message to the Monitoring Section.
