2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
Unit 8 - Information and Communication Technology (Paper I).pdfThiyagu K
This slides describes the basic concepts of ICT, basics of Email, Emerging Technology and Digital Initiatives in Education. This presentations aligns with the UGC Paper I syllabus.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
2. I interviewed 10 people that were both in and
close to our target audience bracket to get two
alternative opinions. The interviews were
roughly 10 minutes each and consisted of 5
questions in which I could establish their
thoughts on different aspects in the film review.
These are just 4 of the transcripts from the
interviews, however the full results will exist on
“Results From Film Review Interviews.”

Name: Clare Ingleson
Age: 37
Profession: Teacher
Interviewer: Good afternoon Mrs Ingleson, thank you for agreeing to take part in this short interview. I will simply be asking
you questions based on the short film review you have in front of you. Please take your time and answer by your own
opinion.
Mrs Ingleson: I understand, shall we begin?
Interviewer: Of course. Can I ask you what your initial thoughts were when you saw the film review?
Mrs Ingleson: Well, I enjoy reading magazines as a pass time and often see reviews of new films or TV shows so I am familiar
with their layout. I think it looks very professional and looks to have had a lot of time spent on it.
Interviewer: And when you did initially see the material, what did you think were the strongest features?
Mrs Ingleson: One of the first things I looked at was the title, but then I was intrigued by the images as they were quite large
and sharp in colour.
Interviewer: Leading on to the next question, what is your opinion of the chosen images? Their location, size and contents?
Mrs Ingleson: Like I said, they're very striking which to some would be a bad thing but to me they made me very interested
as to where these points came in the film and what they meant.
Interviewer: And as for the text, would you say there is too much, too little or somewhere In between?
Mrs Ingleson: No , I would honestly say there is a perfect amount. I tend to skim read a lot as I am constantly reading as part
of my job , therefore I think the amount is perfect. Also the pull quote is a great way to summarise the critical opinion.
Interviewer: My final question for you today Mrs Ingleson is are there any aspects you would improve on this review?
Mrs Ingleson: I’m not an expert on media design but I think the only improvement would be t make the main image bigger,
only slightly. I think in all reviews I have read there has been an image dominating most of the page. That would be my only
critisim.
Interviewer: Thank you for your time today Mrs Ingleson.
Interview concluded.

Name : Heather Fisher
Age: 13
Profession: School pupil
Interviewer: Good afternoon Aliyah , thank you for taking part in our interviews based on our film
review. Please answer the following based on your own opinions.
Heather: I will, thank you.
Interviewer: What were your initial thoughts when you saw this film review?
Heather : I don’t read a lot, I like looking at videos on YouTube from new bloggers so I cant really
remember the last time I read a film review. I like the layout and I like that there isn’t a lot of text.
Interviwer: What did you think were the strongest features of the review?
Heather : I really like the images, I think they show the different parts of the film and they make me
want to see how they link in with the plot.
Interviewer: What else do you like about the images would you say?
Heather: Their size I think makes them so eye catching. Also the colours blend in with the rest of the
page.
Interviewer: Do you think there is too much or too little text?
Heather: I would say it’s the right amount because the rest of the page is quite visual, and because
there isn’t a lot of text it makes it better.
Interviewer: Are there any aspects of the review you would change Heather?
Heather: I think it’s been made really well with nice colours in the text and title.
Interviewer: Thank you for your time Heather.
Interview concluded.

Name: Lucy Clarke
Age:18
Profession: Student of Media
Interviewer: Hi Lucy, thank you for agreeing to be interviewed for our research.
Lucy: Sure, any thing I can help with.
Interviewer: When you first saw the film review what were your initial opinions?
Lucy: If I’m honest I thought it had been taken out of a magazine and you were deconstructing it. I think
the composition is perfect for a film review.
Interviewer: What were the strongest features when you first looked over the review?
Lucy: Like any review, the images were the first thing I noticed. But then I was drawn to the star ratings
and what the legitimate critics has said about the film.
Interviewer: In reference to the images, what do you think is good and could be improved about them?
Lucy: I honestly think they are a perfect size. They add a real look of a review and immediately make
the reader want to know where the images have come from in the film.
Interviewer: And aside from the images, what would you say the text brings to the review?
Lucy: Well obliviously the text here unlike a poster is the most important part. I like how there are the
colours of the title included throughout. Also I think the amount is perfect for skim readers and indepth
analysers.
Interviewer: And finally are there aspects you would change?
Lucy: I would probably make the title the slightest bit bigger just so it really stands out, that’s my only
criticism.
Interviewer : Thank you very much for your time Lucy.
Interview concluded .

Name: Nathan Robinson
Age :18
Profession: Student of Biomedical scienes
Interviewer: Good afternoon Nathan, thank you for agreeing to take part in these interviews.
Nathan: Thank you, I never get out of the science department so this should be interesting for me.
Interviewer: Well when you initially saw the review, what were your thoughts.
Nathan: I can’t say I'm a big reader so visual pages with a small amount of text are ideal for me.
Interviewer: And what would you say were the strongest features of the film review?
Nathan: I really like the design of the title, I think film titles are becoming more and more simplistic and
are starting to look boring. This one is dynamic and has colour .
Interviewer : Would you say the images are a good feature?
Nathan: Like I said previously, I’m not a big reader and I study visually so for me having the large images
is ideal as I can get a lot of information from them without having to read the article.
Interviewer: What is your opinion on the amount of text on the review?
Nathan: The amount of texting overwhelming and it doesn’t take up the entire page which is a bonus. I
would definitely read it.
Interviewer: And finally, are there any aspects you would change on the review?
Nathan: No I think it is well written and well constructed.
Interviewer: Thank you for your time Nathan.
