2. PORTRAYAL OF IMAGE
COSTUME AND MAKE UP
Alike this shot, we have a shot showing
Ellie in bed being visited by her carer. The
character on the left, played by Barbara
Hershey is shown to be ill by her
positioning, make up and props.
She is lying in a bed being supported at
her head similar to how patients are in
hospitals. This would suggest the severity
of her condition and how she is close to
her death.
Also, the breathing tubes would indicate
how she Is having difficulty breathing and
therefore would also suggest her
deteriorating health.
The make up artist has purposefully used a
lighter shade on her face to give the
connotation of illness. The colourlessness
of her lips would also make her look to be
lacking in health.
For our scene with the carer visiting Ellie,
we should use similar mis en scene
features.
3. PORTRAYING FAMILY
RELATIONS
This is one of the final shots of the
characters in this scene.
We are shown the ill woman’s carer
looking over to her and smiling
because she knows this is what she
wanted to do before she died.
It is clear within this shot the care this
woman has over the dying character
and would foreshadow the sorrow that
will come after her death.
Within our prom scene, we will have a
similar shot of Ellie’s dad looking in
on the artificial prom he made and
seeing his daughters elated
expression that she could be not only
be with Sam, but have her very own
prom night.
4. SYMBOLISM OF
DEATH
This is one of the final shots within the
death scene.
The setting of the sun gives the denotation
of the end of a day, however if we look into
it’s intended connotation we can see that it
represents the end of a life- signifying the
death of the female character.
Furthermore, the crashing of the waves
would indicate a peaceful death and that
there was no pain involved as the slow
movement of the waves would signify a
peaceful departure.
Although we will not be portraying the
death of Ellie, it is important we signify just
how severe her illness is. To do this we
should use a similar signifying shot that
will tell the audience Ellie is now in her final
moments.
