2. PLOT OF THE SCENE
An individual victim, lost. Schindler´s soul is touched by the child, he feels her pain, cries for
her. The plight of the one little girl in red touches him in a way the shear numbers make
unreal, it is easy to get lost in numbers. He transforms the faceless mass around him into one
real palpable human being. This one child is a symbol of all the 6.000.000 victims, exposed to
ruthless slaughter. Each was an individual, who had dreams, who had a life, who had a family
. It was at that moment that Oscar Schindler vowed that he would do everything within his
power to destroy the Nazi Regime. While the girl is strolling unscathed while murder and
brutality happen all around her, we see other stories forming or ending, but even in a
telephoto view the viewer cannot take his eyes off the little red-tinted girl. She is the purity,
the innocence, walking unnoticed through the Nazis, and witnessing their every crime. But
the Nazis don't worry - at the end there will be no witnesses We do not know what has
happened to her until much later. The Nazis are ordered to dig up all the Jewish corpses they
have buried to incinerate the evidence of the slaughter of the Cracow ghetto. As the
decomposing corpses are trundled in wagons to the fires Oscar Schindler catch a glimpse of a
red-tinted rag of a corpse. The use of colour to follow the little girl in her red coat has by now
achieved the stature of legendary. However, most people do not know that this image is
based upon a true story, told at the trial of Adolf Eichmann, one of the most feared and hated
Nazi leaders of World War II, responsible for the deaths of millions of Jews.

3. EXTREME LONG/ POINT
OF VIEW SHOT
In this shot , the director uses a long shot to look over a street being
ambushed by S.S officers. In the midst of all the chaos a small girl walks
down the street towards the camera. She is noticeable by her coloured
jacket which is against the black and white imagery. The directors used
this shot purposefully to show how little power the little girl has in the
situation she is in , which keeps the audience intrigued to see if she will
survive the short yet long journey down the street because of how
quickly and carelessly the officers are taking lives all around her.
Furthermore, Speilburg purposefully uses a small section of the shot to
focus the audience’s eyes on the small girls journey through the shot. The
left hand side is blocked by a building and a group of trees block the right
hand side , limiting our focus to the street where most of the action
takes place – this is meant to be a p.o.v shot to show the overlooking
character's (Liam Neeson) viewpoint. The street is constructed in a way
that directs our eyes to the small girl. Things like the puddle and the
action itself because her proximity to the action keeps the audience
nervous for her.

4. MEDIUM SHOT
This scene shows the little girl walking amongst a group of captured Jewish
people. This is signified by their Star of David badges on their jackets.
The fact that the adults bodies from shoulder upwards are out of shot would
give the connotation that they have no uniqueness or no identity in the society
they live in.

5. HIGH ANGLE/POINT
OF VIEW SHOT
So the audience are able to locate the little girl within the shot the director
purposefully has the girl walk in the opposite direction to the long line of Jewish
captives.
Also the German officer throwing out belongings from the apartment , leads the
audiences view to where the girl emerges and makes her way through the shot.
Furthermore, the use of a high angle would demonstrate the girls lack of power in
the situation she walks through and because the officer is higher in the shot this
would show how he carries more power than the girl.

6. SECOND HIGH ANGLE/POINT OF
VIEW SHOT
This is another high angle shot and it again
follows the young girls journey through the
scene.
The space in between the trees shows several
Jewish people being lined up to be executed by
the Nazi’s.
As the shot is fired it shows the drop of the
men and the walking on of the young girl as
though to signify the end of their lives and her
survival.
Again Spielberg decided to use the trees to
restrict our view point , to also focus on
another story within the scene. The audience
witness this execution to reveal more
information about the events of the holocaust
all the while keeping the audience intrigued to
see the little girls fate.

7. THIRD HIGH ANGLE
SHOT
This shot shows a number of captives being forced into a military truck.
The camera is positioned at a higher angle to be a point of view shot so.
The girl in the red coat is again moving in a different direction to the other
people and her coloured clothing makes her stand out more.
