Paint
• Can be either waterbourne or solventbourne
• Interior or exterior
• Used on plaster, timber or metal surfaces
• Various coating systems such as primer, undercoat, top coat,
emulsion and masonry
• Various finishes such as matt, mid sheen, silk, eggshell, satin and
gloss

Paint components
• Water-based contains thinner/binder/pigment
• Solvent-based contains thinner/binder/pigment/dryer

Varnishes
• Can be water-based or solvent-based
• Interior or exterior
• Used on new or old wood
• A transparent finish that comes in matt, satin or gloss finish
• Provides a tough water and heat-resistant coating when dried

Components of varnish
Varnish has three components (like paint):
• Drying oil
• Resin
• Thinner

Wood stains

• Normally needs to be

Sealers and preparatory coatings
• Used as a preparation coating on interior and exterior surfaces
• Seals surfaces prior to decorating
• Offers longer lasting protection and finish
• Types:
– Knotting solution
– Stablilising solution
– Mist coats
– Water sealers

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
• What are volatile organic compounds?
• New regulations were introduced in 2010
• A labelling system is used with five bands. For example:
– Minimal VOC content – 0-0.29% acrylic primer
– High VOC content – 25-50% wood primer or oil-based
gloss
