Finish coat
• The finish coat is a fine layer of plaster that is
applied to a surface to provide a flat smooth
surface in readiness for decoration.
• Finish plasters do not have the aggregates added
that backing plasters have.
• The finish coat is the final coat applied.
• Its purpose is to provide a clean, smooth surface.

• Finish plasters are usually made from gypsum rock.
• They are classed as ‘type b’ retarded hemihydrate
plasters.

Tools and equipment
In order to be able to obtain the best result for this coat, it is
essential that the plasterer has the correct tools:
• finishing trowel
• hawk/hand board
• gauging trowel
• bucket towel
• water brush
• spot board and stand
• mixer
• buckets
• twitcher/angle trowel.

Tools and equipment
• It is extremely important that all tools and equipment
used in skimming are clean
• Any little bit of contamination to equipment or tools
can have an effect on the application or finished job
